Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – England

This afternoon we continue our analysis of the upcoming Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine by turning our attentions to Group D. First up under the microscope, then, is England:

Roy Hodgson’s side kick off the group with, arguably, the toughest of their three fixtures, as they square up to France at 5pm on Monday June 11. Next up for England is a showdown with Sweden four days later at 7.45pm on Friday June 15 before they face tournament co-hosts Ukraine on Tuesday June 19, at 7.45pm.

With Fabio Capello walking away after the John Terry captaincy controversy, it’s fair to say England haven’t had the best of build-ups. In one way, this could work to their advantage, though, with no real hype or expectations of silverware heaped upon their shoulders. Nevertheless, they are still favoured to make the last eight, though France will be confident in their own abilities, having topped their qualifying group after just one loss in 10 games. Sweden, meanwhile, also progressed automatically courtesy of finishing as the best runner-up, with 24 points accrued over 10 matches, while Ukraine will be hoping home advantage can help them advance to the knock-out stages.

The Road to Qualification

Under Capello, England comfortably sailed through their qualifying group, leaving Montenegro six points behind in second place. Racking up a total of 17 goals, they scored twice or more in six of their eight matches, while at the back they conceded just five goals, chalking up a clean sheet on five of those occasions.

Most Appearances: Hart & Cole (8), Rooney & Young (7), Barry & Milner (6)

Top Goalscorers: Rooney, Young & Defoe (3), Lampard & A Johnson (2)

Top Assists: Rooney & Young (3)

The Likely Lads

With Wayne Rooney suspended for the first couple of games, Ashley Young looks set to continue the role as a second striker handed to him by Hodgson in the 1-0 friendly win over Norway. The United winger was joint-top for goals and assists with Rooney in qualifying and netted the winner against the Norwegians, with a coolly taken finish. Priced at 8.5 in the McDonald’s game, he’s cheaper only than Rooney for England but, with an out-of-position role likely for those couple of matches before a likely move to the flank in the third group match, he offers more potential than most amongst Hodgson’s attacking charges.

Faced with back-to-back duels against Karim Benzema, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andrei Shevchenko, John Terry is afforded the perfect opportunity to silence the critics and help steer his country through the group stages. Hodgson’s side is clearly a work in progress and, with the former West Brom boss set to favour a more pragmatic approach, much will depend on England’s ability to nullify their opponents’ danger. Priced at 6.5m, Terry arrives in strong goalscoring form, having netted six times for Chelsea in the previous domestic campaign and his resilience at the back should see him benefit from the recovered balls rule.

Steven Gerrard is likely to be one of the first names on Hodgson’s team sheet. Priced at 8.5, he has picked up 8.4% of owners so far and as the midfield withdrawals continue on an almost-daily basis, the new skipper’s influence will be more crucial than ever. Looking at Hodgson’s likely first-choice line-up, the Liverpool man seems the best bet to be handed set-pieces and, in the absence of Rooney, any possible spot-kicks which may come his nation’s way.

Cheeky Punt

Having been handed a late call-up by the new man in charge, Andy Carroll looks to have earned Hodgson’s faith after a strong end to the domestic campaign. Whether he can remain in the starting XI when Rooney’s ban ends prior to the final group game against Ukraine is another matter entirely but, after impressing and providing the assist for Young against the Norwegians, the 7.5 priced forward looks in the driving seat for a role up front for those first couple of games, at least.

For those Fantasy managers currently looking for a cheaper route than Terry into the England backline, Joe Hart seems the safest bet. The City stopper is nailed-on between the posts and, with a price of 6.0, will also benefit from the extra save points. There are, however, a couple of options aside from Hart but both look far from certain; Joleon Lescott is priced at 5.5 but it’s debatable as to whether he or Gary Cahill (6.0) will partner Terry in the heart of defence. With the Chelsea contingent rested against Norway, Lescott was named in the starting XI but with a friendly against Belgium still to come tomorrow, Hodgson’s thinking will hopefully be made a little clearer for Fantasy managers prior to the France game. Phil Jones is also priced at 5.5 and could well be part of the back-four if Glen Johnson fails to recover from a toe problem.

Definitely. I wanted him against France as well, but 8.5m is slightly too much against a strong French team.

I've currently got him GiggsB. I get the feeling he'll really prosper both without, and even with Roonster in the side, but I appreciate that against France it's a gamble. IT's pretty easy to argue against Eng in that first match, perhaps against the Swedes too.

So much for the New Manager premium eh? 🙂

He was pretty much nailed on for me, but today i took him out and it's really opened up doors in crucial areas of my team. I'm going to squeeze him in gw2 though.

    Right then,

Love these ever changing pre tournament/season moments. Perfect way to occupy my post degree weeks.

    Team as of 4pm reads.

    Szczesny / Lloris

    K.Pap / Jordi Alba / Selassie / A.Cole / Fabio Coentrao

    Cabaye / Ashley Young / S.Larsson / Juan Mata / Mclean

    Jelavic / Ronaldo / RVP.

    a) is it a bit top heavy
    b) Cabaye and Jordi Alba starting XI's?
    c) Who is gebre Selassie anyway

      a) Not too top heavy at all for me.
      b) Yes both starters.
      c) He's in your team...

I'd watch out for lack of starts for Mata and McClean and personally I'd stay away from Ronaldo for GW1 at least.

Also, McClean won't start for Ireland, it'll be Duff and McGeady on the wings.

Possibly out wide in a 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation but not in a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 I reckon. Basically I see him playing not far off the main striker.

Certainly seems pretty likely. That's what I expected a couple of weeks ago (with Barry instead of Jones) but slightly harder to be sure now given the injuries to Barry and Lampard. Depends how much faith Hodgson has in Jones as a midfielder I suppose.

I think that the orginal plan was that Gerrard would have been in the hole with young out left. With Lamps/Barry in the middle with parker. But with the injuries looks like Gerrard will now have to play a deeper role (I don't think he'll put Milner or Jones there against the French) and have Young in the hole a la v Norway - sadly this may means Downing may start.....oh dear!

          Downing 11/12 EPL stats: -

          0 Goals
          0 Assists

Although after 60mins I think he'll then draw on the OX to have a go!

Bit long, but these are the answers I got from PRO Euro 12 in response to asking about teams in the auction stage and then transfers after the auction:

"No, all teams need to be filled in order to complete the auction. As
prompted on the site, no teams can be added or removed after you start the
auction, so you need to have your manager line-up finalised before you start
the auctions. If you have started any before doing this, there may be a way
around it. If you make sure all the other teams in the league are full and
then let me know I can look into a way of trying to remove the blank ones.

There are two ways you can do transfers, it's up to you and your leagues to
decide how. You can either have a free-for-all and allow your managers to
make transfers as and when they like. Or you can set up Sealed Bid transfer
windows throughout the tournament. If you do this, you need to go to the
chairman's office and click that only the chairman can make changes. Then
you need to go to the Sealed Bids button and set up the opening round
deadline. My league will be running one after each round of group games, so
the first deadline will be on June 12th, then one on June 16th and one on
June 21st. It is up to you how you do them though."

It appears that Chairman only transfers and Sealed Bids might be the best way to go about things post auction.

yea, i think Albiol could sneak in for Arbeloa...might just depend on Spain opponent for each game. Arbeloa is more attacking, but Albiol gives them better defending.

Kuyt looks unlikely to start by all accounts, not sure if they're about at the moment but there's a couple of pretty knowledgeable Dutch posters who don't rate his chances.

Hello. Seems increasingly likely he'll start on the bench, but cannot say for certain. Wesley, Robben are arguably the most assured Dutch attacking picks, although not everyone would agree with that statement, but I have those two in my team.

      Good luck.

Just on doubts over RvP or Huntelaar, we know RObben will start, he has a very decent scoring/assist record and could even get some set plays possibly. He's my GW1 pick, then I'll reassess.

It's possible Eagle. It will depand on RvP/Huntelaar, plus I plan to go long SPA, ITA, FRA GW2 & 3, so money will be tight. BUt there's a very good chance Robben will remain.

      Hello EE,

Much better picks in the Netherlands team who are more assured of a starting place. If there is someone in Netherland I might want to hedge my bet on it would be Afellay....

But Sneijder, Robben, Huntelaar look the much safer picks.

If he starts he will take penalties, but he has competition for his slot. E Dutch manager does seem to like him though.

      The front 4 could be:

      RVP, Sneijder, Robben
      Huntelaar

      Kuyt, Sneijder, Robben
      RVP

Are people set on when they're going to wildcard? It's not worth leaving it for the Knockout stages imo so the only real options are for GW 2 or GW 3. I know that my squad will have a much different look to it, depending on which route i take... which is why i need to get this right. So a quick poll with a reason given:

When are you wildcarding and why?

For me, post GW1. Some of the big open questions (Klose/Gomez, Hunte/RvP) should be answered after GW1, plus there's weaker (on paper fixs for several of the bigger teams GW2 & 3 (SPA, ITA, FRA, ENG). THere's that argument about resting some players for GW3, but I believe most of the Grps will be close and don't see early qualifiers so teams will have to field most of their top players right through the Grp stages.

      That's my thoughts processes.

The main reason why some are wc'ing in gw3 is that they believe those who have already qualified will play vastly different teams for the last match day.

I am hoping that making sensible transfers and relying on the manager substitution (hint:strong bench) will get us through pretty easily.

Was thinking of WC'ing after GW2 but thinking that after GW1 may be better now.

Only thing I will say is that Germany and Netherlands play each other in GW2 so may need to swap some of their players out.

Spain, Italy, France and England should all be doubled up on after GW1.

For GW2 here. The fixtures take a turn for the bigger teams not in Group B (England,. France, Spain, Italy). I know people argue that there may be rotation in GW3, but, we will only know the line-ups in Group A where most of us are not concerned about rotation. To wildcard in GW3 you are assuming that player a is guaranteed to be rested and player b guaranteed to start, so it's just guesswork. You can wc a player in who doesn't play anyway. At least with a GW2 wc you are guaranteed at least 1 game from the player.

besides which every team is likely to have something to play for.

          For example

Let's assume France have qualified for the knockouts after GW2. They will play a team from Group C. Let's assume Spain will win Group C. Surely France will want to win their 3rd match to ensure they win the group and thus avoid a meeting with Spain in the knockouts (or put it off as long as possible) and will therefore play their strongest team to avoid losing and the England (or another from that group) may come along and take top spot, and force them into that 2nd spot.

You can win the group after two matches.

Also, haven't you seen the schedule? A game every 4 days, the coach WILL rest even if they've qualified. It's the same every major tournament. You'd think the same at the world cup, but no, that's not what happens...

      GW 3.

      Here are my reasons.

      1. There's a threat of rotation in the last game.
      2. Wildcarding in the group stage guarantees you one game where you can pick your ideal team for one week only. I would rather have that 'dream team' in GW 3 than in GW 1.
      3. The fixtures in the last game are considerably easier for the most part. None of the favorites to progress play each other.

I have more, but can't think of them right now.

I'd leave the Dutch defence alone mate, and I'm a Holland fan. Spend your £6 or £7m on Spanish, Italian or Russian defenders who should all get you much better returns.

Double up on their attackers as Holland will pretty much set out to outscore everyone they play.

Sorry, had to go out to pharmacy to pick up some prescriptions.

Personally I'd start Huntelaar as I think he plays better for the national side than RVP and the two of them work as well together as Gerrard and Lampard do for England.

However, I fear Van Marwyk will start RVP.

He's been mooted for transfer several times but he like it in Amsterdam and appreciates that the ArenA is where he's improving his game. BUt he'll be hot property if he has a particularly strong Euros. Otherwise, I would think Barc, MU, MC, Bayern-bound next summer.

A team of players who have been released by their clubs, i call them the rejects!

    Jaaskelainen
    Bosingwa, Gabbidon, Knight, Steinsson
    Tchoyi, Andrews, Diame
    Kalou, Drogba, Rodallega

Subs: Kuszczak, Nelson, Cuellar, Guthrie, Hargreaves A.Johnson, Saha

I recon we should finish min table and Owen Hargreaves has sent me a new video of him which proves he is fitter than even so he's made the team!

btw what does your twitter mean by "judging has started".

            Surely its just k(Rank)+j(Gink)=Score

            Where;

            k=coefficient of Rank
            Rank=Overall Rank score
            j=Coefficient of presence
Gink=Popularity score, on a scale of 1 to Gink

Jelavic and Sneijder. Everytime i picture Robben take a shot in head, the ball just keeps flying over the goal, over and over. I used to always think of him as having a stinging accurate shot. Jelavic is great value, Srna's price tag is too much to spend on a Croatian player imo, better to spend it on other areas.
