Watchlist

The Watchlist – Papiss Cisse

He may be currently sitting as lowly as 25th in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rankings for forward but there’s reason to be optimistic for Newcastle’s Papiss Cissé. With former team mate and compatriot Demba Ba now nursing a broken nose and sweating over rotation issues under Rafa Benitez, Cissé is once again afforded the platform to shine as the pivot in the Magpies’ attack.

With just 66 points so far, there’s no doubt Cissé’s prospects during the first half of the season were severely hampered by Ba’s form. After an incredible first Premier League season in 2011/12, which started last January when he joined Newcastle from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, the potential for him to rack up a sizeable haul over the remaining 13 games is clear. Last term, he amassed an incredible 105 points over 1,829 minutes, netting 13 goals, two assists and 20 FPL bonus points. Spectacular goals, such as his second in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory away to Chelsea last season will live long in the memory.

So far this time round, Cissé has scored five times, assisted one and collected just four FPL bonus points. In addition he has yet to achieve a double digit haul, with the eight points away to Aston Villa in Gameweek 24 his biggest tally so far. With Newcastle splashing their cash across the English Channel to bring in a raft of new French recruits, however, we sense a resurgence for the north east side. Moussa Sissoko, the defensive midfielder turned marauding number 10, has already caught the eye with his brace at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 25. There are clearly goals in this traditionally attacking side and with Cissé nailed on as the central striker in light of Ba’s departure, he may well be set to plunder the points again.

The upcoming schedule plays a significant part in our refresh of the Watchlist rankings. Having notched back-to-back wins over Villa and Chelsea, Alan Pardew’s side are on the cusp of a superb run of games which hands them a superb chance to continue their climb up the table. After a tricky trip to Tottenham, the Magpies welcome Southampton, Stoke, Fulham and Sunderland to St James’ Park in the following eight and also travel to the likes of Swansea, Wigan and West Brom.

On the back of such a stellar debut season, Cissé’s price does count against him, though. Coming in at 8.8 in the FPL game (£9.3m in the Sky Sports game) he certainly offers less value compared to the 6.0 priced Sissoko (£6.3m in the Sky game) but Cissé’s pedigree could just give him the edge. In addition to his Newcastle goal tally of 18 he has scored 37 goals over his 65 appearances for SC Freiburg, 36 during a four-year spell at Metz and 11 goals in 22 appearances for Senegal. With three goals in his last seven, Cissé is starting to hint at a return to form and with Sissoko’s bandwagon keeping the attention away, the forward may well prove a canny differential acquisition with an ownership of just over 3%.

    Here's a thought.

I know rotation will no doubt mess it up, but if RvP/Roo + Aguero allows the following run of home game captaincy options from GWK 28.

NOR, WIG, RDG, NEW, The Derby at OT,WBA, AVL, WHU

    I'm in.

I don't think Home/Away matters as much for the heavy hitters. RVP's two biggest scores this year have come @ Southampton and @ Wigan. Rooney's was @ Reading. For what it's worth, Suarez's biggest day was @ Norwich and Aguero also tied his high score of 11 @ Norwich. Overall, you'd be playing the odds, because I'd assume most of these players score better on average at home, but my point some of the best weeks to captain the heavy hitters have been when they're away.

Maybe the weaker teams dig in more away from home. Home against the big teams the try and attack get caught on the counter, then must go forward and the slaughter is on.

I think Sturridge is Euro cup tied so he'll at least be rested and ready for the second DGW fixture.

I have Sturridge already, but i'll only get worried if we get told he is definitely not playing both games.

So thoughts now about how to use my 1FT for this week

    1) Walcott -> Gerrard
    2) Azpilicueta -> Johnson/Enrique
    3) Save for next week

I've got Suarez, Davies and Michu from the DGW mob so always running the risk of being left short for next week.

    What do people think?

I'm pretty sure you will want Theo back next week (AVL) so I wouldn't do that switch to Gerrard.

Azpi might be more worthwhile due to doubts on game time and allows you to cover the 'pool defence if they keep 2 shut outs?

    Current squad for this week
    Bego (Fed)
    Davies, Zaba, Distin (Demel, Nelsen)
    Michu, Walcott, Fellaini, Mata (Sterling)
    Lambert, Sturridge, RVP

    Got £2m and a 1 FT...do I do
A - Nelsen to Martin (NOR)
B - Sterling to Henderson (drop a mid)
C - Nelsen to Enrique (but then have to take a hit in GW27)

Isacki. I think you're forgetting a certain Mr Ben Arfa! He will play on one flank (should be back for southampton), and gouffran/jonas/marv on the other. Nice to finally have some competition for places! Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see sissokho and cabeye switch for some games, or within games.

Yep I couldn't forget barfa hanging over the squad like Damocles' sword, was talking about the spurs game though. So you reckon Marveaux's gametime is in question? That's what I thought. Was pretty iffy about putting him in my wc.

I thought that goufrann would just be squad cover, and jonas has been TERRIBLE, so i thought marv would have a good chance of keeping his place. But goufrann has been really good, and puts in a shift defensively, and Jonas was a bit better against chelsea, so i'm afraid I don't see more than a bit part role for marv.

Yep. Think Jonas is quite a limited player but does a job for the team, he's your Milner :lol

I thought Cabaye would go cam but so far am wrong. Perhaps he is best dictating play from deeper. Still should be advanced of Tiote, he's the attacking one of the pair

no need to sweat over who to captain from teh pool attacking players - stu, gerard and suarez will all have between 10-12 points this week so just flip a coin.

GJ's goal at the 93'rd minute of the 1-0 win V swansea however, will take his talli from 6 (following the 2-0 win over WBA - suarez and sturridge one goal each with gerard two assists) to 21.

I think NTI only gets reset in the case of red flags, but I might be wrong. Anyone know? Would be a shame if his price didn't rise after all those transfers in.

I think this post by Markestute deserves more discussion:

    "Repost: Anyone care to comment?

I think it is conceivable that ALL the following matches are moved:
    Arsenal v Everton
    Man City v Wigan
    Fulham v Chelsea
Man U v Everton or Reading v Villa)

Clearly this will cause us all problems.

Since GW29 midweek is a champions league night UEFA will NOT allow midweek games to be played. However, there are examples where league games have occured during champions league weeks such as last years merseyside derby. But this did cause some fuss and the threat of UEFA sanctions. I remember in Italy when an entire set of games had to be moved to midweek, they had to be played afternoon/tea time (do Italians have teatime?) to prevent them clashing with championsleague matches."

I was under the impression that teams not involved in the CL that week could just play their fixture midweek but it would appear not. A lot of us will be left very short. I thought i would only be missing Chelsea and Arsenal players.

Aye, i don't think it's worth planning for it to be honest. Is there really any point in losing players like RVP/Rooney, Aguero, Walcott, Mata for one week? Everyone will be in the same boat.

This. FTs are pretty rare to come by nowadays, gotta think long-term. On the other hand, if you don't have a strong bench you could be in VERY bad shape for GW29 so there is a lot to take into consideration. Hopefully we'll know more before GW27 deadline, I got 2FTs.

Comment System Update from the day so far:

Comment voting is now in and working - a simple +1/-1 system.

Votes successfully linking through to user reputation, so rep is gained for +1's and lost for -1s.

Votes are also linked to a rating for that comment and for that discussion (comment + replies).

The rating awarded to a comment on every vote is weighted by the reputation of the user casting the vote.

Everyone will start at a base level although those invited to beta test may start the live system with rep earned from the beta.

The trick is, exact reputations are hidden from all. You earn levels of reputation that will earn badges but we won't be showing specific rep scores. Low level users will just look anonymous, like newbies - we're keen to ensure that there's no visible "badge of honour" for earning a negative reputation.

That's a good one although doesn't eliminate the idea of trading rep between users.

One thing I found interesting is in a website. The idea is when you give a rep, it would 'cost' you a rep.

But if people after you give the same rep to that comment, the poster and you get some rep. More to the poster obviously. You would need 1-2 rep from other people to breakeven.

          Something like
+2 reps for the person given the rep,

We will have an activity stream which displays all the votes made by minute, hour, day, week etc. We will, on a daily basis check all votes made to see if any patterns emerge.

If we find users voting for specific users on a regular basis and it's suspicious we will simply blank their rep, thus killing any influence they have with their vote. Remember, the vote is useless if the users rep is low. They may carry on voting but they will have no effect on the rating that comment has. As they never see their rep, they won't realise that their actions are having no effect.

Thanks - I've thought a lot about the system - I'm unsure if it will work as designed but I'm hoping its a step in the right direction. Effectively, our most prominent community members, those contributing good stuff, should be able to effectively curate the comment threads - promoting good stuff, relegating bad stuff (to the point it is removed).

It means that, if you sort a thread by rating, you'll see the very best stuff at the top and can immediately start joining those discussions. In this view, all the comments earning negative ratings will either be removed by voting, or, at the very least relegated to the bottom of the thread.

Another popular method of sorting comments will hopefully be "Show Comments by those I follow". In this way, the thread is filtered to only show those comments in that thread that have contributions from your favourite community members.

Sounds like a great improvement on the current system, really looking forward to having it in place! Should at the very least mean more genuine discussion takes place.

              A good point made above:

"I don’t think reputation should necessarily be linked to volume of posts though. Some users are on here 24/7 and some of those make some great posts but equally good posts come from less frequent users."

Will the system compensate somehow? For example, someone like Portsmouth Bubblejet, whose posts are always insightful and informative, is on very rarely, but for me is one of the best posters. Is that where the "Show Comments by those I follow" comes into play, or will his reputation potentially still be good despite the volume of his posts?

Users don't earn reputation for the number of posts they make, just for +1 votes. If a user deserves a rep bump, we will issue one. The admin system enables me to edit reputation in real-time so I can bump a user up in seconds if we feel they deserve it. Of course, that works the other way.

I gave my simple idea I found above. You may look through it if you want.

But I've read the system you've written above. Sounds more detailed and sound.
I really like the idea. Low rep users having lower power in the voting and all, because there will obviously be ones who try to 'break the system' or just trolling.

Obviously rather intensive monitoring is needed.

As said, can't wait it to be implemented. 🙂

Yes, but if I want I can just zero a users rep and lock it. In this way, their vote will never have an impact and they have no way of building rep.

The monitoring on this system is very important. The admin system will update live and the dashboard shows all activity, including votes in real-time. We've also got some nice methods of monitoring user activity for users we need to "keep an eye on".

CM. What's your view on Newcastle's midfield on Barfa's return?

Safe to assume Cabaye and either one of Tiote or Anita will be the double pivot?
I'm not too sure on the remainder. Will they play with wingers with Barfa and Gouffran/Jonas outwide with Sissoko playing the no 10 as we see now?
Or will Barfa take over central attacking midfield position?

I might be wrong, but havent they played pretty much 4-2-3-1 with Gouffran and Gutierrez wide and Sissoko in the "hole"? Pretty safe to say HBA will return to the wide right as this is his best position, imo.

Yeah we have the same idea. If Barfa, Dave, and Tiote can find last season's form and Sissokho keep his current one. This midfield is the one to watch and it's not impossible for Newcastle to have a late season surge to the top 8 even.

        Will monitor Barfa and Sissokho.
