Moving Target

Moving Target – Jonjo Shelvey

Michael Laudrup’s summer spending spree continued to pick up pace earlier this week with the acquisition of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool for a fee around £5m. The 21-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the fifth player to be snapped up by the Swansea boss over the last few weeks, following the arrival of Jordi Amat, Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo, in addition to Jonathan de Guzman’s return on a further season-long loan deal:

Speaking to the Swans official website upon completion of the deal, Shelvey admitted the club’s style of play, allied with the opportunity of increased game time, were fundamental to his decision to move to the Welsh outfit:

“Leaving a club like Liverpool is a very hard decision to make, but coming to Swansea, who play similar football which Brendan (Rodgers) and managers before him installed here, is an attraction. Brendan said he wouldn’t let me go to a club that wasn’t right for me. He said Swansea are perfect for me with the way I play. Rather than sit on the bench every week at Liverpool, I need to come and play football and get myself to the status that I once had. Moving here will help me in terms of the way the manager wants to play. Obviously having worked under Brendan that will stand me in good stead.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal and West Ham youth academies, Shelvey was picked up by Charlton as a youngster back in 2007. Having scored 14 times in 23 appearances for the Under 18s in 2007/08, he was promoted to the senior side the following year and, after becoming the club’s youngest ever first-team player, went on to produce seven goals and five assists from 42 games in the Championship.

Signed by Liverpool in May 2010, Shelvey managed just a single assist from 15 appearances in his debut campaign on Merseyside. Farmed out to Championship side Blackpool the following year, the midfielder made an immediate impact, producing six goals and three assists in just 10 matches before he was recalled to Merseyside as a result of injuries to the likes of Lucas and Steven Gerrard. Back at Anfield, he again failed to produce the goods – notching just once in 13 matches over the remainder of the season.

In Brendan Rodgers’ first term in charge, Shelvey made nine starts and 10 appearances off the bench but was unable to make any real impression, mustering a single strike in the league last time round. Ironically, he was far more prolific in the Europa League for the Reds last season, notching four times in nine matches. On the international stage, Shelvey has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 10 times in 29 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side once, climbing off the bench to feature against San Marino in October last year.

The Prospects

In the main, Shelvey’s move to Swansea has been greeted with a large degree of scepticism, though reports indicate Michael Laudrup was keen to push the move through.

Although Shelvey is versatile enough to play in a deeper, central position in addition to the role in “the hole”, there’s no doubt he has real competition to nail down a regular spot under Laudrup. The likes of Leon Britton, Ki Sung-Yeung, de Guzman and Canas could vie for the “double pivot” positions in Laudrup’s preferred 4-2-3-1, while Pozuelo, de Guzman, Pablo Hernandez and Wayne Routledge all offer alternatives to Michu as the most advanced midfielder behind a lone forward.

There’s an argument that Shelvey’s more physical approach may help his game time if the Swans boss is looking for a little extra steel in front of the back-four, though from a Fantasy perspective, such a scenario hardly boosts his appeal. Further up the field, he’s only likely to get a chance if Michu is either rested or pushed into a forward role, though with the Welsh club linked with moves for Bafetimbi Gomis or Wilfried Bony, the Spaniard may see less time up front next time round.

With Laudrup keen to strengthen his squad as Swansea prepare for the defence of the Capital One Cup and Europa League duties, rest and rotation could well blight the vast majority of their squad. While Shelvey seems optimistic that the move will boost his minutes, it’s difficult to see how he will go about cementing a regular role. Although he’s likely to come in as a mid-price midfield option across the Fantasy games, then, (around 5.5 to 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated) it may take injuries and suspension to others to boost his prospects as a regular for the season ahead. With United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks, even Michu may struggle to persuade early investors to jump on board – Fantasy managers will likely start the season steering well clear of Shelvey, only reassessing the situation if Laudrup decides he deserves more than just bench-warming duties.

Swansea are too good a team for him. I'd probably take a punt if he was at a decent price at somewhere like Norwich.

Won't be doing anything amazing, but I can't see another relegation fight. The youngsters were really starting to gel near the end of last season. I'd say lower mid table. But let's see how good some of these new signings are.

We have a fairly settled team now, just need to get Benteke signed (although he would probably only stay another year). Lambert played a risky game last year but luckily for us it's paid off and we look in good shape. Vlaar's partner and our LB were our weak links defensively so we've sorted those two out as well. 6 new signings all with a full pre-season is great!

    Here is my Villa team:

Possible but i don't see Sagna and Mert being starters come the start of the season because of new signings. And i wouldn't want Arteta starting not because he's not good enough, but because Wilshere plays better as part of the pivot rather than attacking mid and Cazorla is wasted on the left as opposed to attacking mid. So for me, i'd have Podolski and Chamberlain vying for the left wing spot, Cazorla attacking mid, Wilshere in defensive mid, and get a replacement for Sagna and Mert (which is expected for those 2)

Arsenal's backline was one of the best in the league once Vermaelen was dropped. Mertesacker and Sagna will almost certainly start the opening day. Mertesacker possibly as captain.

I'm surprised that some people are this surprised by the idea of signing a replacement for Mertesacker, not only are the loud rumors about Wenger pushing for Williams from Swansea, a sign that Wenger is looking for a replacement (Koscielny was the undisputed star of Arsenal's defense last season and has committed for at least another season so it's not a replacement for him and you don't put this much effort in getting a sub), Mertesacker was definitely not a reason why their defense was good. He's extremely slow and has been shown up in many games like the away game vs tottenham, and his red card towards the end of the season was unnecessary to say the least.

              You know nothing jon snow

The best defender in the world would be shown up in that arsenal team as sometimes because of the way they play the defence gets exposed to counterattacks. This happens much more than at utd, Chelsea or city imo.

A Defender with 80+ caps for Germany who is still only 29 is a top class defender so you have no basis gor your argument.

Ironic that you say i have no basis for my argument.

Please look back at when he was actually a starter for Germany as a starter (even Emile Heskey was a starter for England once upon a time) and while you're at it, check out who the other center backs available for Germany were at the time. Also, during the time he was a starter, Germany played a semi-defensive style that depended on defending deep and then attacking using counters which allows such an immobile defender to not be as exposed as he his now.

Also, its absolutely irrelevant to bring up the fact that Arsenal's defense gets exposed because Koscielny has been brilliant last season, but i guess i can't be sure you'd agree with that considering the kind of defender you value.

So not only has he not been a starter for Germany for a while, which would indicate a possible dip in form that merits his exclusion from the line up and therefore vindicates me saying he was performing poorly last season, you can also see the first couple of games last season when Arsenal's defense was holding up well, that's when Wenger gave Steve Bould more freedom to implement his thoughts which resulted in a deeper line of defense, and therefore less goals conceded, but you can also see the impact that had on their attack. I don't consider a team that scores a lot but concedes a lot as well as a good attacking team and i don't consider a team that concedes little while scoring few goals as a good defensive team, and when Wenger changed the style back a little bit, they struggled in defense before doing well again mid to late season and thats when you can see Mert struggle like hell. So ya, Arsenal is going to continue playing that style, so he's going to continue to struggle.

Oh, and all the points i've made are absolutely irrelevant if you could go back and watch Arsenal's games when he was playing last season and see how he was performing. By the way, even you might not think so, i'm not saying he's a bad defender, he simply isn't a good fit at Arsenal, and just isn't world class like you're saying.

I'll give you a plus vote for justifying your argument but I just don't agree with it. Koscirlny was good as you say but without merts experience beside him he wouldn't be near as good. He never looked as assured with verm beside him.

I predicted mert to be arsenal main def last summer and was rediculed for it but I stand by it still. He is the glue that holds the whole thing together and a huge help when defending set pieces which had been an achilles heal of the gunners for years.

Well honestly i felt that even when Koscielny was playing with Verm last season, Koscielny still looked assured and rarely made mistakes so i'm not sure that's going to be an issue, and its less likely that it'll be an issue next season now that's he's grown even more.

I can understand if you want Mert to be a starter over Verm because Verm was doing really badly last season, but that's not a justification to disagree with my opinion, because i'm not saying that Verm should be the starter, i'm just saying that signing a CB could result in a much more solid Arsenal team. Also, if Fellaini is as close to joining Arsenal as the rumors suggest, they'd be getting that physical presence that can help in set pieces so the reliance on Mert's presence should be reduced.

He's already signed, and stated he wants to play in the hole. One option is to move Weimann out wide and take out Tonev.

Helenius will start for sure if Benteke leaves. For now I see Helenius being a backup for Benteke, though.

        Bacuna also a potential starter.

49% of goals were either assisted or scored by Benteke iirc so he's the safe option. Whoever's playing in the hole would be a good shout, but Agbonlahor and Weimann will both be down as forwards so don't see their appeal. Lowton ended the season well in terms of assists and general play so he's a good punt as we've attempted to solve our CB/LB problem from last season. If Sylla is in there in a 4-3-3 then Westwood's appeal increases.

But for now, Benteke and Lowton are my top picks.

I always saw him as a player Mancini picked while most wouldn't. Lescott was a regular in a title winning side. Nasty in a title losing side. I myself would go Lescott. More experience, better goal threat and based on past 2 seasons, Kompany plays much better alongside him than Nasty. New manager though, so avoid both early on.

Hold on. I'm not a City fan. Nor am I blaming Nasty.
I just think their defence was better before him.
They lost the title because they lost out on RVP to Utd.
And because Mancini messed about with a winning side.
Ane because Aguero, Silva, Toure, Hart and Kompany (the leaders of the winning side) all went downhill last year.

Not saying Nasty is rubbish, just prefer Lescott myself and suspect Pelegrini might go with experience at the back.

I'm tempted by city's fixtures but don't know about their new managers philosophy, I hear he's attack minded. Chelsea will be tight but they have a couple of tricky fixtures in the opening 6 GWs. Ars fixtures look good, but they are so hit and miss defensively.

People are far too hard on Shelvey. He's only 21 and really not that bad. That being said I won't be investing anytime soon. Got to give the lad credit for moving too. People are quick enough to critizise when someone opts to sit on a bench for a bigger club for bigger wages when they have the opportunity to move.

I also agree with the article - there's a lot of competition there. But he's only going to add to that. Some 21 year olds will thrive on that. I think it's something that he can overcome over the coure of the next couple of years. I'm not saying he will, just that he can. It's really down to him IMO.

Wasn't aimed at you in particular ILF and you might even be right. It's just I think at 21, with him having fairly limited opportunities at Liverpool I think it's too early to assume his natural level. He's not likely to ever set the world alight but plenty of players get by in the top flight without doing so.
He might have to step down in 2-3 years but personally, I'm glad he's been given this, possibly last, chance while he's still at an age where he can develop.

Man Utd are apparently after Astori, CB for Cagliari. Not sure if that means one of the current defenders could be on the move since they already seem well covered in that position. He's not good enough to be a 1st choice Utd CB.

Yes but Evans, Jones and Smalling should be adequate backup.

Would be a strange transfer unless one of Evans/Jones is being promoted to first choice and one of Rio/Vidic is on the way out but that wouldn't seem like a good decision to me.

      Realistic? Yes.
      Wise? No.

This game is largely about captain.
So you need one consistent player from Man United attack.
      That isn't Kagawa.
Not having RVP is too dangerous.
Best player in the best team and on pens and central striker.
Games top scorer past 2 seasons.
      Hardly ever blanks.
If you must have 1 player this season, make it RVP.
Bale may start season, then join Real August 31. Be cautious of that if picking between them.

Yes. But if you pick him at expense of RVP, then want RVP in, that would take 2 transfers at an early stage when chances are, you also are having to get others out/in as we find out managers sides and who is performing etc.
Get both if bale is wanted. Thats fine.
          But get rvp whatever.

Why does everyone feel that Bale will be priced @ 12M ? Wouldn't he be priced closer to Silva's price of 2012/2013?????....10.5? Does anyone recall how many points Silva scored in 2011/12 compared to Bale in 2012/13?

9.5m is the max for Silva I think.

Surely he drops. Navas in. Poor last season. New manager risk. I plan to avoid him this season. I am going for goal scorers over assisters in midfield.

I will be cautious initially due to Confed but I think he could be a consistent performer which aint bad for his price.

My temptation with him is he gets shifted into the hole with Navas and Nasri on the wings. If he's playing there and is cheapish then I think he becomes a very good option again.

Anyone else expecting a huge season from Hazard?
I think he will be in the hole this year.
His french league form showed he has high goal numbers in him and now he has had a season in prem, he could build on it this year like Suarez.
Jose tends to get the best out of certain players. The big headed ones. With Jose filling his head about being on a par with Ronaldo, I expect Eden to be firing goals in from all angles.

I am expecting a huge season. Can't see him being in the hole though. Think Oscar/Mata are ahead of him there, but there will certain matches, for tactical reasons, that he dos play there. He should still have a very strong season though, think Mourinho is the one to elevate his game, just like he did with Ronaldo. He gets the best out of players like you said. Penalties could be a big factor too as i don't see Lampard playing all that regularly.

Agree on Lampard still being rotated and Hazard on pens.
Actually think now Lamps has goal record, Eden will be first choice penalty taker too.
I dont know if Oscar has enough goals in him for the hole though. I could see him being deeper than that.
