Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

    Afternoon all,

Firstly thanks to Absinthe who has integrated all his rotation findings into my season ticker. This has allowed me to create a score based on my season ticker calculations and present the below.

    Here is Absinthe previous post;

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/22/moving-target-danny-graham/?hc_page=18#hc_comment_5088133

There are three interactive tables; One for each of two-way rotations, three-way rotations and 2*Two-way rotations.

To use the interactive tables, search for the clubs initials in the finder which will list the available rotations for that club and tick the ones that interest you. Equally you could filter by the cost of the rotation if budget is an issue and then use the search feature to filter down to the rotation that is right for you.

For people who aren't aware of my season ticker, it calculates a clean sheet score for every fixture, for every club based off the two previous seasons, league statistics such clean sheets at home or number of times a club has failed to score away. It also takes into account goals scored, conceded and much more but I don't want to waffle on about it when there is a brilliant season ticker in the members area 🙂

The interactive tables themselves plot the total score for the rotation over the score/price of rotation. The higher and more right the rotation, the better it is. All rotations are for the first 19 gameweeks (up to GW19)

    Two-way rotations
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/SeasonTickerRotationFinderAnalysis/GW1-19Two-wayRotationFinderAnalysis?:embed=y&:display_count=no

    Three-way rotations
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/SeasonTickerRotationFinderAnalysis/GW1-19Three-wayRotationFinderAnalysis?:embed=y&:display_count=no

    2*Two-way rotations
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/SeasonTickerRotationFinderAnalysis/GW1-192Two-wayRotationFinderAnalysis?:embed=y&:display_count=no

    Conclusion;

EVE/NOR/WBA is the best three-way rotations up the Jan WC

NOR/STK is the best two-way rotation

    EVE/NOR/SUN/STK is the best 2* two-way rotation

Wack them into the season ticker you use to confirm 😉

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers 🙂

The problem is that WBA and STK players will set you back 5.0, which I think is too much to rotate that often.

        Good morning.

        1. I'm now using Tommy's ratings for ATT & DEF, which had more scope for maintenance and updating through the season than mine did.
        2. I found a bug in my code. But since we can't edit our original posts, it's pretty tough for that message to get out.

Awesome. Gonna look through them all in a bit. Just at first glance I don't seem to notice Southampton rated too high overall. Any reason for this? I thought they were liked in most rotations. But great tool. Gonna dive into it.

This is a statistical look at rotations and Southampton previously have been pretty terrible. There's no opinion in it at all.

If you like Southampton, simply search for them in the rotation you are requiring and go from there

I know what you mean Mark, that is simply because the tool is currently using values of 1.0 for each team's form. If you think SOT will be better this season then improve their form value on the sheet.

One of our next steps is to seperate form into ATT & DEF form, so we can say, for example, a team is better going forward but the same defensively.

Random musings on FPL defences this season, part 1.

    Arsenal

Last season- Conceded 37, 14 clean sheets(5 home, 9 away)

    First 6- Villa(H), Fulham(A), Spurs(H), Sunderland(A), Stoke(H), Swansea(A).

    Likely backline.

    Szczesny.
    Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs.

    Verdict-
An Arsenal defender from the off could be an option this season, with Villa and Stoke at home and some favourable away fixtures, which they tend to tighten up in, within the first 6. Mertesacker looks the most nailed on in the Arsenal backline and also offers attacking returns and bonus point potential with the revitalised system alongside clean sheets.
Szczesny(£5.5m) could also be an option alongside a £4.0m filler, however Mignolet looks more favourable. One to consider for after Xmas, if he keeps his place that is.
Koscielny(£5.5m) is a potential rotation risk if Wenger fancies giving Belgian Thomas Vermaelen a run out ahead of a Champions League tie.
Sagna(£5.5m) is the highest rotation risk, the Frenchman isn’t getting any younger, and with an increasing injury risk, Carl Jenkinson(£4.5m) is on hand to take his place in case of injury, potential bargain.
Gibbs(£5.5m) looks nailed on for the meantime while Monreal is sidelined with an injury.

    Villa

Last season- Conceded 69, 5 clean sheets(4 home, 1 away)

    First 6- [Arsenal(A), Chelsea(A)], Liverpool(H), BLANK, Newcastle(H), Norwich(A), Citeh(H).

    Likely backline.

    Guzan.
    Lowton, Vlaar, Okure, Luna.

    Verdict-
“I’d say the valuations are pretty fair – Lowton is at £5.0m as a result of higher potential attacking returns, particularly if Villa play with a narrower formation (Sylla or Helenius playing would result in this). I’d suggest Vlaar for (price) safety, Lowton for more chance of assists (although be wary of his 10 bookings, but as he came on strong positionally, this number will drop). All goals scored by these players were wondergoals, but given Villa’s tough fixtures I’d suggest Vlaar for now, Lowton for nicer games.”

    Via ( http://uefacouncil.wordpress.com/2013/07/19/first-article-on-aston-villa-last-season-formation-reviewfpl-etc/ )

    Cardiff

    Last season(Championship)- Conceded 42, 18 clean sheets(10 home, 8 away)

    Likely backline.

    Marshall.
    Connolly, Hudson, B.Turner, Taylor.

    First 6- West Ham(A), Citeh(H), Everton(H), Hull(A), Spurs(H), Fulham(A).

    Verdict-
FPL have been particularly harsh with pricing this season, with B.Turner the only £4.0m defender, with the rest coming in at £4.5m. The reasoning for this is not only due to the clean sheet stats last season, but also due to the backline’s goalscoring credentials. In the league last season Connolly picked up 5 and Hudson 4 from Peter Whittingham’s set-pieces.
However despite the stats the first 6 don’t particularly look good for Clean sheets, excluding maybe Hull away. Ben Turner at £4.0m is an excellent filler when trying to squeeze Van Persie, Bale and 3 x Chelsea into your side.

    Chelsea

Last season- Conceded 39, 16 clean sheets(8 home, 8 away)

    Likely backline.

    Cech.
    Azpilicueta/Ivanovic, Ivanovic/Terry, Luiz, Cole.

    First 6- [Hull(H), Villa(H)], Man United(A), BLANK, Everton(A), Fulham(H), Spurs(A).

    Verdict-
Given the double gameweek, and Mourinho’s clean sheet record at the Bridge, many a fantasy manager will be scrambling to invest in the Chelsea backline. However the main question is, who’s nailed on? Firstly, the versatile Serbian Ivanovic(£6.5m) may play both games, with Azpilicueta away in South America just a few days before their first GW1 game the Serb may be utilised at Right-back, and shifted to centre-back to the midweek game.
Another that springs to mind is Cole(£6.5m), a favourite of Jose’s, he looks nailed on to play both games, unless Mourinho utilises Cole’s compatriot, Bertrand.
The final supposedly nailed on option at the back is David Luiz(£6.5m), who can play both at the back and in the middle. Mourinho has spoken fondly of the Brazilian, which has lead to believe the attacking hairball is nailed on in Mourinho’s DGW plans.
If you don’t fancy risking any of the above maybe Cech, also £6.5m, alongside a filler will satisfy your needs, up until GW3, anyway.

    Palace.

Last season- Conceded 62, 11 clean sheets(6 home, 5 away)

    First 6- Spurs(H), Stoke(A), S’land(H), Man United(A), Swansea(H), So’ton(A).

    Likely backline

    Speroni.
    Ward, McCarthy, Delaney, Parr.

    Verdict-
Ian Holloway has never been one for having a tight defence, and it doesn’t look like that’s changed. The London outfit not only have a (fairly) tough start, but with Holloway’s “we’ll score one more than you” mentality I doubt Palace will be a fantasy asset at the back, unless any of the backline offer any attacking returns.

    Everton.

Last season- Conceded 40, 8 clean sheets(7 home, 4 away)

    First 6- Norwich(A), WBA(H), Cardiff(A), Chelsea(H), West Ham(A), Newcastle(H).

    Likely backline

    Howard.
Coleman, Jagielka, Distin and/or Alcaraz, Baines.

    Verdict-
The make or break for many in investing in Baines(£7.5m) or Coleman(£5.0m) is whether Everton line up in a 3-5-2 or a 4-2-3-1. Both Baines and Coleman are likely to offer greater attacking returns that most defenders if Martinez elects to play the duo as wing-backs, and Baines in particular with his set-piece duties.
Baines offers a good escape route for those investing in Chelsea coverage, providing you have £1.0m spare to get the Englishman in for a fairly favourable run of fixtures.
Another option in the Everton backline is Alcaraz, if he is nailed on in the 3-5-2, and Everton are solid at the back under Martinez, for many, it’s a wait and see.
Howard could be under threat from Robles this season and if he loses his place, Robles could be a bargain....

    Fulham.

Last season- Conceded 60, 8 clean sheets(4 home, 4 away)

    First 6- S’land(A), Arsenal(H), Newcastle(A), WBA(H), Chelsea(A), Cardiff(H).
    Likely backline.

    Stekelenburg.
    Reither, Hangeland, Amorebieta, Riise/Richardson.

    Verdict-
Fulham once again disappointed defensively last season, registering only 8 clean sheets, with only Reither(attacking returns) and Schwarzer(saves/pen saves) breaking the 100 point mark.
However with the arrival of Amorebieta(card magnet) and Boateng Jol’s side should be more solid defensively this season. However with a majority of the backline being £5.0m, i’d wait and see if any value emerges from Craven Cottage before investing this coming season, better options out there, to begin with anyway.

    Hull

    Last season(Championship)- 52 conceded, 16 clean sheets(10 home, 6 away).

    First 6- Chelsea(A), Norwich(H), Man City(A), Cardiff(H), Newcastle(A), West Ham(H).

    Likely backline

    McGregor
    Chester, Figueroa, Faye.

    Verdict-
Steve Bruce tends to steer a tight ship, this time he has taken a twist, deciding to switch from a traditional 4 at the back to 3. James Chester looks like a solid option at £4.0m, having been a regular in the side for the past two seasons, as does Faye, although he faces competition from McShane( 😆 ).
Hull have some favourable home fixtures to begin with, which may allow you to squeeze in all the big boys whilst also having decent options at the back. Hull also offer decent home/away rotation with Palace, making the duo a very cheap, viable rotation pair.

    Liverpool.

Last season- Conceded 43, 16 clean sheets(11 home, 5 away).

    First 6- Stoke(H), Villa(A), Man United(H), Swansea(A), So’ton(H), S’land(A)

    Likely backline

    Mignolet.
    G.Johnson, Toure, Agger, Jose Enrique.

Verdict- The Merseyside outfit were an excellent option at the back and fairly predictable with a majority of their clean sheets coming at home against the weaker Premier League side.
Mignolet at £5.5m looks like a favourite as a combo with a £4.0m filler for many a manager, willing to play the Belgian every game.
Kolo Toure at £5.0m is also a viable option if Liverpool don’t sign another centre-back during the summer, after coming in on a free from Man City.
Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson, both £6.0m offer attacking potential and are likely to score offensively early on, with Liverpool’s favoured start.
After the DGW, i’d suggest investing here if possible.

    Feel free to correct me....

You're saying Luis is nailed on but I'm not so sure.. doesn't seem to be a mourinho type player.

      Iva/Cahill/terry/Cole

Could be a likely lineup imo.

I would love some defensive Chelsea coverage but that situation scares me...

Azpil plays for Spain in Ecuador four days before Chelsea play Hull, but Ivan plays for Serbia in Colombia on the same day. Might that make Ivan a bit doubtful for the Hull match too, or are they the only two contenders for the RB position?

Why does everyone in FFS appear to be opting for Luiz, when Ivan and Cashley are both the same price and made similar total scores last season (a bigger score in Ivan's case)?
Is Luiz really that much better a prospect than Ivan and Cashley?

Too much ££ in the defence for me but i do like the front 3. No-one over 8.5. If they are firing then you can justify the money in the D.

    Migs/Daniels

    Collins/Olsson/Kompany (Parr, Burner)
    Bale/Hazard/Coutinho/Sissoko (Thomas)
    Giroud/Lukaku/Negrado

Pretty happy with this team like only one I'm not sure on is Thomas but I suppose if he's just bench fodder it doesn't really matter. Unless there's anyone better and more likely to start for 4.5?

I'm not sure with Zaha, if he will start. Lot of competition out wide with Nani, Young, Valencia and even Giggs.

I prefer Aguero to Negredo but out of them 2 options I would go the first chocie unless...

We learn Zaha is first choice winger in first few weeks.

I wouldn't say Parr is "nailed on" right now, he is only just back from a recent injury. He had quite a quiet time before the injury with Moxey being chosen instead.

If Parr comes back from his prolonged lay off and recaptures the form when he first joined (was our player of the season couple of seasons back) then 4.0 will be a bargain for him certainly.

This has probably been mentioned in the posts but purely as a Mourinho Chelsea strategy. The Spanish players who play in Ecuador on Wednesday 14th August - possibly Mata Luiz Azpilcueta and Torres he says return home on Saturday 17th morning and are therefore unlikely to play on Sunday 18th - the game is scheduled for 4pm. I suspect they may actually get on an earlier flight but leaving this aside for the moment isn't there a similar dilemma for Man City players who may play for Spain - eg Navas, Silva - though their game is Monday 19th so they have an extra day. I have a feeling the whole Mourinho opinion on this is just gamesmanship and that all the Spanish contingent have an excellent chance of starting the Hull game. What do you think?

Anyone else considering going for a heavy backline?

Vertonghen will seemly benefit hugely from the new PPS system, and Baines and Luiz could be played in midfield regularly and with the former's fair share of set pieces and spot kicks, he will definitely return plenty of points.

Plus the fact that these all play for top teams and will return plenty of clean sheets.

    I also like the look of 2 or 3 >5m mids 🙂

It's weird....the players who receive more bonus points for goals should be the ones who don't score often, such as DF and MF...because for a FW scoring a goal is something pretty common and they would receive too much BP if they would score goals every week.

I know it does. I mean it sounds counterintuitive, but if they didn't do it it would probably give defenders/mids too much advantage in the baps system. They do still get more actual points for scoring goals after all.

Not bad, you aware of Chelsea DGW though? I'd say 2 if not 3 Chelsea might be very useful.

Jags at 5.5, better getting Coleman at 5.0 (likely to be attacking wingback under Martinez) or as preseason develops look at Alcaraz who may start at just 4.5

Like Coutinho, people here will tell you hes overpriced but with their fixtures and his obvious ability I'd stick.

Paulinho not a very good pick, likely to be playing pretty deep and a lot better options at 7 or less, Ben Arfa, Nolan , Snodgrass etc

Like Sturridge although might not be fit for start of season, consider switch to Lukaku for more Chelsea

Cheers, checked snoddy's stats looks a better bet though paulinho bangs in 6 a season if he plays as the forward mid. Got one against Eng in May and in the confed cup! Agree with Lukaku for DGW1 if he starts! Watching Sturridge if he is fit i'll go with him and stick ivanovic in defence, don't want 3 che as don't want to use wc too early.
