Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

    My fellow United fans

Now that the Cesc deal is basically dead are there any mids who are/could be available that you think would actually be an improvement on those we already have? Truthfully I'm struggling to come up with any and buying for the sake of it seems a wee bit pointless.

I was talking to some of my united supporting mates about this, and the fact that many of the biggest players available in this window have already gone, or are staying put.

United's midfield would be improved by Thiago, Fabregas or Strootman, but they're all unavailable now, so what are we left with?

Fellaini still available if Moyes is willing to spend £24m on him
Cabaye, if he is good enough
Luis Gustavo would be a good signing, but considering you want a player to play alongside Carrick, i'm not sure he'd be ideal, as he is more of an out-and-out DM

Gundogan would be a great signing, but he's probably not available.

I'd say Wanyama would've been good, but then there must be a reason why no top half prem sides wanted to pay £12m for him.

I guess without signings you're relying on Cleverley and Nick Powell, and are they good enough to win the title again, considering investment from Chelsea and City?
One thing to consider is that last summer a lot of United fans were clamouring for Tiote to be signed. Judging by how awful he's been for the past year, you really judged a bullet there, just trust in whoever the manager brings in.

If Bayern would allow Kroos to leave he would be good.

Cabaye is an interesting one. is he good enough, he looks like he might be, but you never really know until that player actually makes the step up

Yeah, Kroos would be a great signing, but there is close to zero chance of him leaving Bayern.

Apparently Gustavo is the only midfielder that Pep is willing to let go, he even wants to keep Shaqiri, who is clearly last in the pecking order for places. Thiago, Gotze, Kroos, Muller, Ribery, Robben fitting into 3 spots it seems.

I rate Cabaye, but again, not sure if he's good enough for United, though he is probably better than Cleverley now, would he stunt Cleverley's growth and first team opportunities if he came in?

It's the point i was making the other night, and i chose my words carefully...SAF has been a great manager in every respect..no doubt about that...but he has left the United team looking a bit thin if Rooney goes,If anything happens to RVP then they look quite ordinairy by the standards of the top clubs...maybe even poor...(the measure for United being the Bayerns and the Barca's of the footballing world)...For whatever reason..either intentional or far more likely unintentionally SAF had put too many eggs in one basket with RVP and he's ended up somewhat on a pedestal...Very unlike SAF to allow that to happen and it needs putting right ....

I think we should accept that between the demise of the attraction of English football and SAF leaving, United cannot attract top names for the time being.
Win the league this year and it could be a different story.

Think a midfield signing will come from within England.

There's a lot of talk about Spaniards being rested in the DGW, but am I not right in thinking Serbia, Belgium, Brazil all have friendlies that week too? This considered, looking at the strength in the Spanish midfield isn't it conceivable that Mata will get less then minutes (for Spain) than say...Ivanovic?

    Any ideas?

Also, given that Man City are bound to hit the ground running I've glanced at Navas and Silva. are they in the same boat?

    ----------------------------

On an entirely separate note someone asked me, as a villa fan, who I think will start.

Well aside from Lowton and Vlaar I think Luna might have a shout, and at 4.5 might be worth a punt. I know he's young but I gather he likes to go forward and Lambert has shown he's got an eye for young talent.

Westwood is a sharp kid, but people might baulk at the 5.5 price tag. Still, he might pop up with an assist, or a set piece. Tonev looks much better value at 5, and I think long term might be seen as goin up top with two strikers in a 4-3-3. Granted Villa might not be so attacking minded those first few games (or will they?), but just a heads up he might be earmarked as an attacker.

Finally in Attack. Benteke as we all know is class, and the villa defence say that in training he is unplayable (but then, maybe THEY would). Weimann looks reasonable at 6m and had a good season last year, might be a surprise package. Don't rule out Gabby, but at 6m Weimann looks better value and I think Lambert likes him, so perhaps more likely to start.

    Szczesney / Boruc
    Nastasic / Collins / Baines / Turner / Shaw
    Snodgrass / Walcott / Nolan / Mirallas / Thomas
Anelka / RVP / Lakaku (originally had Sturrage)

1m spare incase I do Lakaku --> Sturrage

Slightly worried about no Liverpool coverage and only 1 dgw player. However I think there is a chance teh likes of Walcott Nolan and Mirallas might score more points in one game than what some dgw players might score.

Ok just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons... would you still have Bale if he ended up at United?

I can't see any reason why not, aside from the fact that he may be more of an assist guy then goal scorer with RVP cashing in on his talented passing game?

Assuming you're picking up 3 Chelsea players for the double gameweek:

Which three and how best to divvy them up? And why?

    1. Luiz, Hazard, Lukaku

This is the standard trio that people are picking up. Luiz is very likely to start both and has attacking and bonus point potential. the two games are HUL and AVL which are really defensive friendly imo. Picking up a premium Chelsea defender is highly recommended, and for safety, Luiz is as good a pick as it gets.

I'm not even going to get into Hazard. If you don't have him going into the season, you'll be laughed out of town here and with good reason. Will almost certainly start both, looks prime captaincy candidate already.

Lukaku is a risk though imo. Looking at how this Chelsea team is shaping up, I see Mourinho starting him against Hull *cue big bandwagon and some initial price rises. But he'll be back on the bench for the second game to play second fiddle to Ba or Torres. 8.0 for one great fixture is a trade off most are willing to take with the promise of extra game time in the second. No real downside here.

Another advantage of this lineup is the even spread. You're not locked up in one particular position. So you can gradually phase them out up to GW 3.

    2. Luiz, Cole/Terry, Hazard

This is actually what I've currently got. I feel more confident in Chelsea's defense than in their offense to begin the season. An additional premium defender would help lock in some solid points to begin the season.

Looking at what's on offer here, Terry, Ivanovic and Cole are all options. I like Cole best for security of starts, but Terry I feel is really ramping up his pre-season and with more confirmation from Jose, will be the one to pick up. Ivanovic is a concern because of Serbia's friendly but will most likely start. There is a possibility though his RB spot will be given to Azpi in the second game of the GW.

Exploring downgradeability, having two premium Chelsea defenders is actually pretty flexible. The team you'll want to be getting players in from will be City in the weeks following with their games against car and HUL. Owning say Cole will allow an easy switch to Nastasic if he starts (and this gives you a week to see who City start in defense!) You can afford any of them if not, maybe Zabaleta or Clichy or even Kompany.

    3. Hazard, Oscar/Lampard/Schurrle, Lukaku

High-risk high-reward. I see some people doing this and actually feel it's not the best idea. Yes, it's a dream double gameweek, and yes, it's prime for big returns, but there's just too much at stake and you've also got to take into account opportunity cost (i.e. what you're not getting in those forward slots) not to mention the uncertainty in the Chelsea lineup. I'd argue there are a lot of teams with good fixtures to start the year, filling up your front 8 with three Chelsea will leave you short a player from City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Last thing about this build, who will be the player you want as your second mid? Schurrle is a punt, but we all know he can play, and with the likely absence of Mata GW 1, I'd tip him to be the wide starter with Chelsea lining up 4-5-1. So to cap off, a prediction of Chelsea's lineup for GW1 and GW2. If you guys could contribute opinions on this/correct me if you think I have it wrong, please go ahead, but this is what I've currently gleaned from pre-season, posts by other members and my own knowledge:

    GW 1: 4-5-1
    Cech
    Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole
    Ramires, Lampard
    Hazard, Oscar, Schurrle
    Lukaku

    GW 2:
    Cech
    Ivanovic/Azpilicueta, Luiz, Terry, Cole
    Ramires, Essien
    Hazard, Oscar, Mata
    Torres/Ba

I'd agree with your analysis there mate. My only thinking is perhaps Lukaku will play the first 60 mins of both games of he puts a top performance in against Hull. Still rich for rewards with those minutes and it'd be ideal for most of us.
Personally though ill be doubling up on Chelsea defence and Hazard, downgrading for a hit gw2 on defenders (probably) which frees up cash, 3 million, to upgrade Aguero to RVP come gw4. Need that path to RVP I believe and don't want without against Palace

A bit depends on how De Bruyne recovers from his injury, if he's fit for the start of the season it could shake things up.

      Front 6:

      GW1:
      Ramires, Lampard
      Hazard, Oscar/KDB, Schurrle
      Lukaku

      GW2:
      Ramires, Van Ginkel/Essien
      Hazard, Oscar/Schurrle/KDB, Mata
      Torres/Ba/Lukaku

So really I have no idea, but I expect Hazard to start both 😛

        Yep that looks about right.

I don't think KDB is quite ready yet though especially coming back from injury. I'd be very surprised if he starts, but if fit, a likely playing sub.

KDB did look very good in that friendly the other day, before he went off injured, but then, its only pre-season.

He is probably nailed to the bench I guess, Oscar probably ahead of him in the pecking order. Not sure who is ahead out of Schurrle and Oscar though, but Hazard and Mata are clearly the first choice options

I'd say it depends on what sort of play they want/

Schurrle is direct and fast. Oscar is more of the silky playmaker. Against weak opposition, the former might well be the better pick..

If your going for 4 then Cech is a good choice as you don't need to sub him out in GW3 just use your reserve keeper. Helps spread the transfers and save hits.

Do you think Lukaku will start in both DGW games? Loving the Holy Trinity midfield, but would worry for the strikers if the usual suspects start firing in the goals early

For people who import the FPL data into Excel, is there a quick way of solving the 'duplicates' issue automatically?

E.g.: Two Jones defenders - ManU and West Brom.

I can create a formula to indicate if they are duplicates, but short of manually changing the raw input extracted, not sure how else I can fix this. Any thoughts?

You do realise you've pretty much said 'ignoring four of my players, is the team ok?' ?

If there is going to be a rotation on the frontline, Negredo is probably the best of the bunch. Aguero doesn't seem as nailed on as we thought, judging by Pellegrini's comments.

Navas - doesn't score goals. And for that reason, I'd look at Silva.

Nasty is probably worth the punt, though I'm leaning towards Mertesacker.

The rest looks good. Though I'd consider the Wanyama thing - think he'll play deep for Saints. Koren?

I just wanted Navas to be different if I'm honest.

City's start is making me want to get one of there defenders in, plus they had one of the best defences in the league last season.

With the new bonus point system I thought that he would be a decent buy but Koren is most likely to get more goals+assists so I'll have to take a look at him I guess

well, I suppose I'm in a better position than most to comment on this as i watch United every week.

Kagawa had a few problems last season, he didn't have much of a pre-season, and got injured just when he was looking like getting some form. He has great touch, balance and movement, and is actually quick, though he did look as though he could get bullied at times. The other thing of note is that we didn't use him in his best position for most of the season. Kagawa is a number 10, he plays behind the striker, he was initially bought to play behind Rooney, but then RvP came in and Kagawa got shifted. He played 2 games in that role, Norwich at home (3 goals, 1 assist), and West Ham away (2 assists and he was probably the best player).

If used regularly in his best position Kagawa will be a star

As a Southampton fan, I feel the need to clarify the full back situation, considering the love they seem to be attracting. They are good value, of that there is no doubt. With a strengthened backline and one of the best mid-table pivots in the league in Wanyama and Schneiderlin (our strongest area of the team, IMHO), CS occurrences should be improved.

However, there are a few things to note:

Callum Chambers, 18 year old right back, has been promoted to the first team squad as promoting English talent is a big part of the Cortese philosophy. While I wouldn't expect him to challenge Clyne regularly, perhaps he will be given opportunities against weaker teams or come on as substitute. (This promotion of English talent is also what makes J-Rod so attractive for many).

Shaw - some have been saying he is a risky pick because of his age and the presence of Danny Fox in the squad.
I can't agree. Fox persistently embarrassed himself with rudimentary defensive errors and got himself sent off vs WBA towards the end of the season and I think that was probably the final straw. His concentration was lacking all season which was very disappointing as a Saints fan, considering part of his attraction had been previous Prem experience. IMHO, he will only play when Shaw is injured and I think he'll be a reluctant deputy at that.

They both like to get forward and perhaps Clyne has the edge here. His delivery, thus far, seems more consistent, though Shaw did get a goal in pre-season.

Anyway, hope that helps/makes things even more confusing.

Boruc is first choice and Davis, I would expect, would be his replacement. Boruc definitely benefitted from a run in the side and improved as time went on. He's definitely won the fans around.

Gaston - it's difficult to say. He's not great at playing the full 90 minutes. In fact, it's unusual for him to last more than the hour. Fitness and concentration seem to be issues but the latter could be an age factor.

I sensed a great deal of frustration with him from both management and fans and, at some points, even when 'fit', Steven Davis was preferred in that CAM position. BUT he is immensely talented and if anyone is going to do amazing things in our team, it is him. He's a punt but he could, considering relatively low value, turn out to be a great one. I would expect him to be given another chance in that CAM position when the season starts.

If I can help any more, do say!

What you said on Boruc is a mirror to DDG at United. Many people were skeptical at first and the early errors and weak command of his area allowed many to think he was no good, then he got dropped. That run of games towards the end of his debut season helped, but when he came back into the side after the Reading debacle he never looked back. The Bernebeau was the turning point for him in the eyes of those who doubted him

Yeah it is definitely a DDG kind of situation, though obviously, he's carrying rather a lot more weight/command than DDG. He does have a tendency to flap a bit at times but I think he's a decent keeper for where we hope to be.

Well exactly. As long as the sideways move doesn't bother you, that's a very plausible switch. 🙂

Some suggested that Lallana was vulnerable if we signed new attacking players - I'm not so sure, considering he's received a great deal of encouragement from the management and was captain last season.

      Cheers for the thoughts.

Couple of questions; with you signing Wanyama, where do you see Jack Cork fitting in? He seemed to much improve your side last season when he returned from injury, any chance of him filling in at RB like he did a few times last season? Worried about Clyne's prospects.

Secondly, do you think Gaston Ramirez will be a more consistent starter this season? Or is Lallana a better option from your midfield?

I think you're right. That's another threat to Clyne - Cork looked good at RB. I see, considering the money we spent, Cork being sacrificed for Wanyama. So I think Cork will likely be on the bench. Not impressed mind, I think he's great.

Ramirez is the gamble, Lallana is more nailed on, imho. I think Ramirez has the potential to do great things but also could spend a lot of time on the bench. And, as I said in a previous post, he struggles to complete 90 minutes which is a concern. I think Lallana will improve immensely this season, providing he can stay injury-free. I'd go with Lallana if it was my FF team but I think they both have their merits. Ramirez probably has more points in him if he sorts himself out.

Yeah I was impressed with Cork, can't see him getting no starts, probs end up rotating them.

Cheers for the detailed veiw, much appreciated.

Sounds like Shaw over Clyne then?

I'd go with Shaw - as I say, Fox is an accident waiting to happen.

Really not keen on foster anyway, dont trust WBA defence regardless of home or away

        Il go mannone for now

        I'd say it's currently 80%/20% mannone/westwood as to who's first choice.

Foster & Boruc rotate Home & away for the first 10 games of the season.
      Stick with them.

Yeah I think (hope) so. Lukaku's our only in form striker so I see no reason why he wouldn't pick him.
