Sky Sports – Formation Analysis

In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game we unveil a new contributor to the Fantasy Football Scout team. Luke Williams, or “d1sable” as he is known to the community, joins the ranks to add his expertise to our coverage of this game, having established himself as “Hot Topic” specialist in recent weeks.

In Luke’s first article, he analyses the available options in formation for our Sky Sports starting XI. Ultimately our intention is to ascertain which tactical set-up is optimal for giving our teams the greatest chance of success, whilst also assessing the potential need for flexibility in our approach.

Firstly, let’s look at the five highest scoring outfield players per position last season. Our objective here is to gain an idea of the spread of points available from defence, midfield and attack – a vital aspect to consider when selecting formation.

Sky Sports Top Five Forwards 2012-13

NameTotal PointsPricePoints per £
Luis Suarez2559.626.56
Robin Van Persie2501025
Wayne Rooney1839.818.67
Christian Benteke1837.524.4
Dimitar Berbatov1827.524.26

As the tables highlight, the highest scoring defender (Leighton Baines, 154) scored just over 100 points less than the top midfielder (Santi Cazorla, 262) and attacker (Luis Suarez, 255). This won’t come as a shock to the experienced Fantasy manager: this tends to mirror most Fantasy games; it only serves to remind us where we should be spending the majority of our budget.

Another important point to note is that midfielders offered very similar returns to attackers but, for the majority of the time, at a reduced cost, as highlighted by their points per million. Obviously, costs have been adjusted for this season but with midfielders having a maximum value of 9.0 and attackers 10.0, your budget will be stretched that little bit further to acquire the services of the top attackers rather than the premium midfielders.

In terms of formations, Sky Sports offers you five different options: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2 & 4-5-1. We have chosen to dismiss 5-3-2 and 4-5-1 on the basis that they seem slightly counter-productive, five defenders will surely limit our Fantasy returns and a formation with a single forward seems far too negative in our quest for goals. With that in mind, let’s cast an eye over the pros and cons of the three more offensive tactical set-ups and assess the optimum time to put them to use.

4-4-2

Pros

  • Flexible: if this season’s Michu or Christian Benteke crop up you can adjust accordingly to 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 with a single transfer.
  • You should be clear to acquire an expensive front two due to the cheaper prices offered in defence and midfield.

Cons

  • Having four at the back could hinder your overall points potential due to the relatively low scores achieved by defenders in comparison to midfielders and attackers.

Best time to use
Due to its flexibility, the 4-4-2 is certainly useful as an initial formation for the more cautious Fantasy manager.

4-3-3

Pros

  • Having three strikers clearly offers the potential for more goals.
  • Arguably, this formation also provides more captain options as you are more likely to hand the armband to an attacker.

Cons

  • If you wish to move to 3-5-2 it will take you two transfers.
  • Again, having four defenders is a slight risk due to the rarity of clean sheets.
  • Attackers come with a higher price tag and it can take a large chunk of your budget, potentially having a big impact on your midfield and defence.

Best time to use
This formation is most useful for the run-in. Perhaps the most efficient tactic is acquiring a big hitter in defence to cover the business-like performances from the top teams and a value attacker that has come to light from one of the lesser sides fighting for survival: they should be highly motivated whilst offering guaranteed starts.

3-5-2

Pros

  • Five midfielders gives you a higher chance to receive the bonus points on offer for completed passes and tackles.
  • You can field seven attacking players, more than any other system in the Sky Sports game as 3-4-3 is unavailable.
  • A three man backline means fewer players can lose points for goals conceded.
  • Midfielders offer the best points per price value.

Cons

  • If you wish to keep your current attackers but want to add a third in-form frontman and shift to 4-3-3, you need to make two transfers, replacing a pair of midfielders with a defender and attacker.

Best time to use
Most of the season, if not all of it, It’s pretty hard to make a case for any formation over the formidable 3-5-2, which could well be the default set-up for many of our teams.

Data suggest that this set-up should carry the most potential to gain Fantasy points, although as mentioned above, there is a small case for a shift in formation towards the season run-in to a 4-3-3. Of course, each season is different from the last and it’s important to back the in-form players regardless of their position. With an added 10 transfers this season giving us 40 in total and with no monthly cap, we should perhaps find it easier to be flexible and adjust our formation accordingly.

Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’ve set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for those playing the Sky game – we’re looking to defend our crown, having finished as top-rated league in 2012/13. If you fancy the challenge, you can enter with the pin 8000112 and with Sky offering a cool £1,000 for the winner of our official “FFScout” league, there’s every incentive to get on board.

Good afternoon everyone, just wanted to say a quick thank you to the community for your extensive football knowledge / enjoyable bedtime reading!

It was my 2nd fantasy season last year and it went pretty well, won a bit of money in my mini league (had to make sure no one knew I was reading the forums regularly) and had a fair amount of luck to go with it! Just to say thanks, and good luck all for the coming season, it's gonna be a cracker!!

Bad when Silva is only £0.5m more.

Yaya will outscore Silva on occasion but I'd be surprised if Silva doesn't comfortably outscore him over the course of the season.

Sliva by a couple of country miles. Yaya is most likely to play as a double pivot. But I am still not convinced fully by Silva's fantasy value personally.

Hmmm, well with 3-5-2 I would pack the mid with premium players and have a cheaper front 3,
picking 2 out of likes of J Rod, Anelka, Dzeko, Lukaku.

If you're going the premium route, I'd go with the 3-5-2 then. Plenty of low price strikers to choose from. Maybe a mid priced striker such as lukaku with a bargain bucket striker like Anelka.

            Current 3-4-3

Hazard Silva Mirallas Kim Koren ( Rotating )

            RVP Lukaku Dzeko

            Or if I went 3-5-2

            Hazard Silva Mirallas Walcott Kagawa

            Anelka Lukaku Dzeko

Defence stays same and have 1m spare, but no RVP obviously.

Does high percentage ownership increase or decrease the likelihood of a price drop? I'm thinking of Davis, the 4m Sou keeper, owned by 16%. Is he more or less likely to go down than a GK owned by only 1%, like the aptly named Price.

I think this is wrong! The higher the ownership the lower the risk as price drops are done in % in ownership drops where as price rises are down to number or transfers in.

ie if Davis has 1,000,000 owners then you need 100,000 transfers out for him to drop 0.1m where as is Price has 10,000 owners then you only need 1,000 to transfer him out for the same 0.1m drop.

I think that this is a massive FPL misconception, one that I held myself until managers on here pointed me toward FISO's website. The higher the % ownership of a player the less likely that they are to gain or lose value and vice versa.

While I agree with you somewhat, you're discounting the fact that while it requires more transfers to drop, it is much easier for these transfers to occur as there are more owners. I think what you're saying is very applicable after the first 5-10 weeks, when many of the owners are no longer active, so effectively keep the prices of the highly owned player afloat.

      It decreases.
Decreases are based on the relative changes in the ownership, while increases are based on the absolute numbers of transfers.

however, it's also more likely that a player with high ownership will be transferred out in much higher proportions. people picking price know he's not going to play, davis has a lot of casuals who see he got points and is 4.0 and might expect him to start.

Yes, it depends on who the owners are and what they are expecting from a player.
The thing one would like to avoid is that when a player is expected to play by a large proportion of his owners and then when these expectations are not realised, they all start dropping him.
I guess it might the case for Davis and some other high ownership players like Baker. A lot of people are getting them because they are very popular thinking something like 'this high ownership must have a reason - the player should be a good pick!'

All players have the same 9% of current ownership for a drop, so no, ownership on its own is not going to make someone more likely to drop. The fact that he was the highest scoring 4.0 GK from last season means that casuals are getting him and expecting him to actually play, so when they realise he won't they'll sell him en masse.

Just get a random 4.0 GK who didn't score any points last season, probably someone red-flagged as they need more transfers to drop, not to mention no one who owns them is expecting them to play.

Very solid point. I don't have the stats for the biggest price falls from last season but it is a bit of an oxymoron as it comes down more to the player and the reason for the ownership than the stats alone and I guess it depends on your definition of risk to drop.

But away from the stat analysis I don't personally believe that any 4.0m that will play and therefore I can't see it making much difference to keepers this season as there will be no one to transfer too.

I think it should be a much bigger concern for those that own 4.0m defenders (ie Baker) as there will be some starting options to transfer to and it only needs to be a 0.1m drop for you to have an untransferable dead rubber on your bench.

But if you plan on playing your main keeper in all games there would be no reason for you to sell your 4m keeper at all, so the price drop is irrelevant

  20. Budget Midfield Options
    KJ-
    • 11 Years
    10 years, 9 months ago

I decided to take the time and write up the pros and cons of a few of the more popular (and a few of the unmentioned) budget midfielders at 5.0 and under. The majority of the time we all know that our budget mid won’t be playing, but the one time he has to go into our starting XI may be a significant point difference between someone who plays and someone who’s a bench warmer for their respective side.

Wanyama (SOU) 5.0 7.0% - Another popular pick, Wanyama is definitely a great signing for Southampton. The former Celtic midfielder registered 6 goals and 3 assists last year for the Scottish side. Couple that with his tackles and pass completion in linking up defense and attack, and the new bonus points system may finally turn a defensive midfielder relevant in a fantasy sense. He’s definitely not a bad punt, and looks to be someone who’ll be a rock for Southampton this season.

Sidwell (FUL) 5.0 1.4% - Although he did score in Fulham’s latest friendly, he normally doesn’t score many fantasy points throughout the season. As a bench warmer for your XI, Sidwell will more than likely play if you need a man to grab you some “appearance” points, but his potential is fairly low. Even with Kacaniklic (5.0 and 0.5% ownership) looking to miss the start of the season due to injury, Sidwell shouldn’t be in your plans. For your money, you’d get much more out of Kim.

Kim (CAR) 5.0 0.9% - One of the FFS favorites, Kim scored the lone goal in Cardiff’s victory of Chievo a week ago. With 3 goals and 2 assists in the last 4 games, Kim could be the new Michu. Less than 1% of managers have him in his side, and compared to all the other budget options, Kim seems to be the most exciting. Fellow Cardiff midfielders Whittingham (5.0 and 2.4% ownership) and Noone (5.0 and 0.2% ownership) have been on the score sheet, but you’ll be getting your best value for your money with Kim. If you have a midfielder from Cardiff on your side, if it’s not Kim, you’re wrong.

Redmond (NOR) 5.0 0.9% - Grabbing an assist so far in the preseason, Redmond seems to be legitimate competition for Snodgrass and Pilkington. With Pilkington struggling for fitness, Redmond may get handed the start against Everton for their home opener. That being said, he is still competing for a spot. With Hooper and van Wolfswinkel leading the line, Redmond may become valuable if he does cement that spot. However, spending 5 million on a player looking to break into the first team at the moment does not seem to make fantasy sense.

Tonev (AVL) 5.0 0.5% - By playing in the hole behind Benteke and Weimann could add to his assists. However, Tonev was out with a thigh strain for almost a month. He did feature for a half in Villa’s 2-0 win over Shamrock Rovers and does seem to be in Lambert’s plans, but there are also some rumblings of Helenius starting the season as supporting the attackers. At 5.5 and categorized as a striker, Helenius doesn’t seem to have much fantasy value. As for Tonev, with his lack of preseason and especially with Villa’s run of ars/che LIV and a blank GW3, there are better options for your midfield to start the season.

Marveaux (NEW) 5.0 0.4% The Journal is reporting that Marveaux will be undergoing surgery this next week on a groin injury that will most likely sideline him for the start of the season. Additionally, Tiote (4.5 and 2.6% ownership) is supposedly out injured as well. However, both featured in the draw with Rangers at the weekend, and I can’t find much about the possible injuries anywhere else. I would steer clear of Toon until their midfield gets settled, whether they are in fact injured or not.

Thomas (CRY) 4.5 2.0% - Coming in under the 5.0 mark, the new Palace midfielder looks to be in the running for a starting spot. Although he didn’t feature in the last friendly, he has definitely been shining when given minutes. At an absolute steal of a price, if he does manage to break into the team he should stay there. At the moment, it looks like it’s a toss-up.

Barkley (EVE) 4.5 0.9% - Maybe a long shot, but Martinez and Jagielka have been in high praise of the youngster. He was given minutes against Valencia in the US ICC competition and had some sparks. Every now and then you’ll see someone who drops Barkley in their RMT post. As a 4.5 filler, you’d do better with waiting until Hull’s Quinn is fit or Thomas breaks into the Palace first team.

Quinn (HUL) 4.5 0.3% - Confirmation that Quinn will miss the opener against Chelsea due to a hamstring injury. Although he will be out of action to start, the fact that he played 42 out of 46 games for Hull City means that he’ll slot right back in once he has recovered. Not a bad shout if you’re willing to wait on his recovery.

In conclusion, at 5.0 you really should be going for Kim. He may seem like a part of the FFS “template,” but he only has 0.9% ownership. Compared to the defensive_minded Wanyama with 7.0%, I’d take an attacking differential any day. At the 4.5 mark, if you’re really strapped for cash and need the extra .5, I believe it’s worth a shot putting Quinn in your team. Yes, he’s injured, but it’s not likely that he’ll be out much longer after GW1.

Can't argue with much of that, though at the start of the season I have a slight preference towards a 4.5m, simply due to budget constraints.

      Thomas is the popular one.

Another 5m option not mentioned much is Allen, if he nails down a spot for Liverpool he could be a budget consideration again. Last year, he had to do allot of defensive work due to problems in the squad and Lucas fitness.

He us so defensive minded that it has been around 6 years since he has found the net, and he rarely gets the final assist for the goal. He may be subject to an increased chance of bonus points, but whilst Liverpool play much better with him, his fantasy points will not be worth the punt.

Lovely run-down. I also think Campana at 5.0m for Palace could be a dark horse. He's supposed to have excelled for Spain's under 20s team and could carry an attacking threat. I'm likely starting with him and Quinn since CRY/HUL offers decent rotation.

Great post, Quinn seems like the obvious pick at 4.5m for me as surely everyone will have done their research enough to not been their bench in the very first GW and he should be fit and nailed on after.

I can definitely see Kim being the best route over all but then Cardiff have a really tough start to the season and so I can't see him being a huge bandwagon right from the get go like Michu was after his barnstorming start to last season but as the season progresses I think Cardiff will do well with Kim at the fore.

Yep. Even with a tough start, Cardiff are still hosting a City side with new management and an Everton side with new management.

City definitely have a tendency to concede at the start of the season, even more so now with Nastasic out.

No worries about goals against with a mid, but there's more than a chance Kim can grab a goal or an assist.

I think that the only one that you might have missed is Pennant at 4.5m, missed pre-season game time due to his past discretions but I can see him nailing a spot on one wing and providing good attacking potential.

I had considered putting Koren in there since he seems to pop up every now and then in RMT, but I couldn't really find much information on his preseason form.

Yes, he seems like a solid pick for Hull's midfield, but even with that I'd rather go with a) .5 less for Quinn or b) same price bracket for a prolific Kim.

Graham Dorrans WBA, at 5mil seems to be overlooked. (0.2% ownership)

Great pre-season thus far (banged in a few goals now) & seems to be fielded much further up the pitch.

Thoughts on him as a 5th midfielder?

      Fantastic post. Thanks!

At the moment, I'm thinking of going for Quinn but keeping an eye on Thomas.

If Kim really does prove to be 'in-the-hole' and in form, he's a 4th mid option for me!
