The Community Round Up

Squad balance and the influence of the Fantasy Premier Leagues’s new Bonus Points System on our formations were amongst the key discussions taking place on the boards this week. We also look at some of our posters’ worst ever Gameweeks and catch up with the latest from our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

The international break provides a useful time for Fantasy managers to take stock of their team. It’s a time to consider playing the market with a wildcard, saving transfers or waiting nervously for your players to return from their travels unscathed.

In our discussion on international break strategy, Newarse was among those looking to invest in Wayne Rooney ahead of Gameweek 4’s clash with Crystal Palace, while SAAB admitted he was “dying to” wildcard. Sadly Rooney’s head injury has since put paid to Newarse’s plans.

For those considering wildcarding over the break, though, Get In urges caution. Similarly, Triggerlips has also been looking at how much a wildcard is worth and wonders whether it could be best used later in the season when the double Gameweeks mount up.

Impressive Tackle’s post late last week on squad balance proved one of the most popular yet. He looks at the ideal spread of money across the team, which will come in handy for those currently on a wildcard.

Elsewhere, Southampton fan Bayern Badonde has been keeping a close eye on his team’s midfield in an attempt to help us better understand their mid-price options. With so many forward options on offer this will prove useful to those looking for an alternative to Rickie Lambert.

For many, especially those that captained Robin Van Persie or Edin Dzeko, Gameweek 3 was a horror show.  When we asked what has been your worst ever Gameweek, SW6 had last season’s Gameweek 2 tally of just 27 firmly etched in his memory. Similarly, Adam West will never forget selling Dimitar Berbatov just prior to the Bulgarian putting five goals past Blackburn for Man United.

Finally, the Bonus Point System continues to vex the community, especially the lack of points for assists. Blue Tiger was on hand to run the rule over the new system and show the dramatic changes it is making to our formations.

Community Leagues

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million+ Club league, open to those with an overall worse than two million in the first five gameweeks, Goyko Locos continues to lead the competitors epic race for a respectable rank. He is now 920,000th in the FPL game with no hits or wildcard. To join the other 18 teams in this league the code is 459213-545168.

Meanwhile, in Thomas and Peppie & Felix‘s Friends Life H2H Competition Thomass, Forca Inter and Daniel top each of their three groups.

Forca Inter is also one of the five league leaders in In Tommy We Trust‘s  competition. The other four are Smarty Pants, Tommy Tour, Mind Over Mata and Binji.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing competition saw 47 knocked out, with 934 left. The safety score was 34. In his Early Bird league 475 qualified and 256 were knocked out.

With a score of 207 Dr Ennet leads Fifa Las Vegas’s league, closely followed by Somebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up on 205 and Messimerized on 199.

In FFS UEFA’s leagues Shipsontrev was the top weekly scorer with 68 points. Lateriser12’s captaining of Olivier Giroud earned him this week’s Order of Extreme Valour award. Special mention goes to The Light Knight for his audacious decision to hand the armband to Hatem Ben Arfa. Tommy Tour is another doing well. He sits in first place in their La Liga on nine pts and is 529th in the world.

FFS Uefa have also announced details of their latest tournament, which is open to 737 community members and based around the FA Cup. More details can be found here and the registration form can be found here. Those already involved in the FFS UEFA leagues and those who applied unsuccessfully to be a part of that competition have all been given an automatic space so do not need to apply.

      2. Is a members only option although you can do it for a single gameweek only by clicking on the title of that gameweek. Or just use common sense to judge the ease of the fixtures 😉

I've decided, I've wild carded, therefore I am bringing in RVP. There is no better or easier time to do so. If it turns out he doesn't bring the rewards that could otherwise be reaped by a more balanced team, he can be easily downgraded and the wealth spread.

Thoughts on this WC team I'm tinkering with?

    Mignolet - 4.0

    Coleman - Vidic - Kos - Sakho - Chester

Walcott - Paulinho - Fellaini - Ben Arfa - Brady

    Sturridge - Giroud - Benteke

Too punty in midfield? I know I've spread the money quite evenly, perhaps too much so. But as I'm playing the WC early is it worth it to have flexible options to rotate in midfield and defence?

          erm... 😕

I'd want to have Neagle and/or take a bit of a risk on Martins if it were me (see my comment to Acqua above).

Rosales is a good option but most of his threat will come from set pieces. and EJ (who he's assisted by far the most over the past season or so) is gone as you know.

I don't know exactly how the scoring works with bonus and all those other things that give you points but captaining Gspurnign might be your best bet. hard to tell if Rosales will get any points. and he always seems to get subbed off early! (or not start)

Netherlands play on Friday the 6th and then on Tuesday the 9th. Then United are Home to Palace on the 14th before they host Leverkusen in the Champions League (I reckon Moyes will want to get off to a good start with 3pts) on the 17th before playing the Manchester Derby at the Ethiad on the 22. Don't you think Moyes can get the job done with his other strikers and keep RVP fresh for the CL match and the crucial Manchester Derby? if United were to lose the derby they'd be in BIG trouble (7pts from 5 games). and Moyes would be majorly in the hot seat if they were to lose the derby after a poor result in the CL midweek....

Moyes needs every point he can muster as the pressure is already growing...RVP will play for certain imo but the general point is a good one...SAF was a bit obsessed with maximising his goals last season, hence playing RVP for maximum minutes (just about)...We have no reason to believe Moyes will follow suit...He may well rest him for CL's games..We don't know do we ?..not for certain...

Mulling over a Soldado & Coutinho > RVP (C) & ??? move. Unfortunately ??? is currently max 4.9, which is like combing through bins for an old hamburger. It would make it so much easier if RVP fell. He's currently on +30% but has fallen 5.4% today. I can't imagine casuals continuing to sell enough to force him to -100% before next Friday night though. Surely they will see Van Persie (CRY) and take that as an omen...

But in that bin I have found: JWP, Stephen Ireland punt or Bannan who is less of a punt but lower ceiling.

Would be good if he did. I feel I can count on an RVP goal against Palace whereas Soldado going by the first three games is going to be frustratingly short of service. Not unless Lamela and Eriksen pull off an immediate magic trick, but I feel it'll take longer than that

Maybe it is too risky to sell soldado now, but it's also too risky to cap him.

Maybe Coutinho to Lamela or something, maybe. I just feel I can't not respond to Coutinho's desperation not to score me fantasy points at 9.0, and RVP looks like an absolute machine especially if Rooney ends up out. I'd feel very comfortable captaining him. Everything goes through him.

Walcott looks like a decent option, tempted by Benteke(C) myself.

The team will change, I just put it together quickly and didn't have much money for the defence after splashing out on the strikeforce.

Thanks for the point about Matic, I put him in simply as I saw him linked with a big money move in the transfer window and he's cheapish in the game.

Balo has 13 goals in 15 for Milan. Penalties, free kicks, main striker. The group isn't the easiest and there are arguably better picks for the spot but I don't take UCL seriously so Milan players are a must 😉

lol. His style of play is similar to Messi, it really is. Put him in your watchlist as I'm not sure he'll start all games or be used as secret weapon. JJ sometimes likes to innovate lineups in some matches.

Whacked this on an old topic, didn't i? 😎

Using the season ticker, it is likely that Arsenal and Liverpool players will benefit most from a favourable schedule.

With this in mind, does anyone think it is too cavalier to field 3 from each side over the next 6 game weeks? (of those 12 fixtures, the toughest match between them is Arsenal away at WBA).

By GW10 I may have manoeuvred one of the players out depending on from and I will put two FTs on standby so as not to capitulate when the sides face eachother.

    Here's the 6 i had in mind.
    Liverpool: Mignolet; Sakho; Sturridge.
    Arsenal: Walcott; Ozil; Giroud.

I would like an Arsenal defender because, unlike the media, i do think they have a good record defensively - but those attacking prospects are just too promising. Liverpool look solid and I really rate Sakho so they dominate my defensive thoughts.

I have ranked them in order of favourability and those two sides are top.

        Following them it goes;

        Hull
        Swansea
        Villa
        UTD
        Newcastle
        Fulham

Tottenham are a minefield and UTD's only real lure is RVP.

I'll have Benteke and Brady and one of Swansea's mids, likely Hernandez to go into GW4. By GW7 i'll be bringing another Swan in for the run of fixtures they have ahead.

Nani is my surprise pick for the season. I don't see how people don't see him as United's best winger. His inconsistencies have been partly a product of not getting a run of games, through injury and the like. If he does get a run in the team, he will be a must have at his price, and the price is low. A World Cup year should also keep his motivation high. I'm all on it. I think Moyes will get the bet out of him. Should break double digits in goals and assists for the season.

Baines to Zab, think he is better value than Merts.

Keep Silva and Coutinho for now.

Morrison and Kasami are next on the hit list (Barkley may be safe for another week or two).

If you don't have Brady then Morrison to Brady is a good move. If you have £6.1m left after that then I think Hernandez for Kasami is a good shout.

Wait a few more weeks and Johnny Evans will no doubt make his annual emergency injury replacement entry into Utd's central defence and you'll be able to pick him up for about £5.2m.

      Patience, my young Padwan.

    Should I go
Short Term: RVP & Quinn for GW4
    OR
Just go Long Term: Ozil & Benteke?

Any price rises screws me in the ass

I think I would go B. it's not that I don't think Rvp is a bad option I just think that 5 million you save on Sturridge benteke and Giroud makes the difference. Think they will be close to Rvp come the end of the season in goals.

          And injured too isn't he?

Agree, if its that bad then go without RVP and get a solid trio of Benteke, Studge and G-Ru. You can't go wrong with that lot.

It's all in the article 😉

but here's half of the timeline:

September 18: Team Allocation and First Round of Fixtures Announced
September 21: FFS UEFA FA Cup Begins

but obviously not everyone starts on the 21st as quite a few teams get added in at later stages

    Assume these two things:

    1. Oezil forgoes a transition period and begins clicking really well with his new team-mates.
    2. No further injuries to Arsenal's squad.

Then, given Arsenal's upcoming fixtures, would it be madness to triple up on them with Oezil, Giroud and Walcott?

It's worked in previous seasons with Man City in 2011-12 (Aguero, Silva, Dzeko/Yaya Toure/Tevez), and Chelsea in 2009-10 (Drogba, Lampard, Malouda/Anelka). Could this be another opportunity to ride the goalfest?

I think you need the umlaut over the 'O' to be Özil, or Oezil is fine too.

And yeah, tripling up on a 0-0 would suck, but I guess it's the risk you take.

yes. Willian will play on the wing imo and Eto'o up top. his only threat centrally is Mata who doesn't seem preferred. Oscar has started all 3 league games plus the Super Cup so far so i'll be keeping for the time being

The team I am tinkering about now is
        Mignolet 4.0
        Dawson, Turner, Collins, Koscielny, Chester
Brady, Puncheon, Lamela, Walcott, Ben Arfa
        Benteke, Giroud, RVP.

Decent or back to the drawing board?

I would do Puncheon to Ward Prowse (you will bench him or Brady every other week so not worth £5.4m in my opinion) and upgrade Dawson to Zabaletta if poss.

Can't stretch it that far, but I could get Vidic. But I don't rate Ward Prowse, think he is a ticking timebomb and Ramirez must regain his place soon.
