Scout Scribbles – Coloccini Doubt for Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini is an early concern for Newcastle with a muscle problem. Christian Benteke has returned to training but will be rested by Belgium, Andros Townsend is a slight doubt for England duties, Jozy Altidore is confident of ending his Sunderland goal drought and Anthony Pilkington withdraws from the Republic of Ireland squad:

Coloccini Worry for Magpies

Fabricio Coloccini has given Alan Pardew cause for concern ahead of Newcastle’s home game with Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime. The Magpies skipper has been forced out of Argentina’s match with Uruguay later tonight due to a muscle injury and faces a race against time to be passed fit for the weekend showdown.

The Scout Says: Given that his side are set to face the red-hot partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, Pardew will be desperate for his skipper to recover in time. The Newcastle boss has clearly been unimpressed by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and subbed off the Frenchman for Mike Williamson in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton – Steven Taylor is believed to be edging closer to a comeback though it remains uncertain whether he’ll make it in time, handing the Tyneside team a real headache and perhaps boosting the armband prospects of both Suarez and Sturridge, given that Newcastle shipped three against Hull in their last match at St James’ Park.

Benteke Rested Out by Belgium

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has confirmed he won’t involve Christian Benteke for tonight’s clash against Wales. With his country having qualified for next year’s World Cup in Brazil after beating Croatia last Friday, Wilmots has ruled out the Villa forward and is expected to continue with Romelu Lukaku up top again.

“He trained for the first time in three weeks with the group on Friday but I won’t risk him.”

The Scout Says: Certainly, Benteke’s prospects of a quick domestic comeback have been boosted by a return to training for the national team. While Paul Lambert has yet to comment or assess his star forward, there’s no doubt a fully-fit Benteke would be immediately reinstalled to the Villa XI – all the more so after the midlanders’ failure to find the net away to Hull last time around. Home games against Spurs and Everton are far from straightforward but given that he’s already scored against Arsenal and Chelsea this season, Benteke – now down to 8.8 in FPL – has shown he’s more than capable of breaching any backline.

Pilkington Concern for Canaries

The Norwich midfielder has withdrawn from Republic of Ireland’s match against Kazakhstan this evening. Pilkington, an unused sub in his nation’s defeat in Germany last Friday, has been allowed to return to Carrow Road for treatment on an unspecified injury.

The Scout Says: Chris Hughton will be sweating on Pilkington’s fitness after a couple of impressive displays. Handed his first start of the season against Stoke in Gameweek 6 due to a injury to Nathan Redmond, the left winger supplied the assist for Jonny Howson’s winner at the Britannia and kept his place in spite of Redmond’s return to fitness last time round. Pilkington’s consolation strike in the 3-1 home defeat by Chelsea was one of the only positives for Hughton’s side and with 15 FPL points over his last couple of appearances, he could be a real differential to consider providing he proves his fitness, with games against Cardiff, West Ham, Newcastle and Palace in the next six.

Vydra Boost for Baggies

The West Brom on-loan forward has insisted he is ready to make his mark after a hamstring injury curtailed his early-season game time. Vydra has managed just 30 minutes in the league over the opening seven Gameweeks but has revealed he is finally free of injury:

“Now I feel in perfect shape. The leg doesn’t hurt and I’m ready. I played 60 minutes for the reserve team against Reading and even scored. Then another 45 minutes for the first team versus a youth side from Derby County. Everything was fine. I have been in training with the first team for quite some while already and endure the full burden without any problems.”

The Scout Says: Unfortunately for the Czech international, the influx of new arrivals has led to a change in formation which is likely to limit his first-team options. The introduction of Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano has seen Steve Clarke switch to the 4-2-3-1 system of last season, with the former sitting in “the hole” behind a lone forward – with the likes of Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe and Shane Long all vying for the central berth, Vydra may have to rely on appearances off the bench unless Clarke decides to switch system. Given that the Baggies have taken seven points from nine since Sessegnon and Amalfitano arrived, any alterations seem highly unlikely right now.

Altidore Confident Despite Drought

Sunderland’s summer signing revealed he is still full of self-belief in spite of a frustrating start to his career on Wearside.

“Any player is a product of the environment. If we’re playing good attacking football, you’re always going to have opportunities to score goals. I don’t change my mentality or the way I play. I feel like I’m playing well at Sunderland. We just have some bad luck right now, but I feel like I’m playing well and doing things right….If we can just focus on building a good team and try to leave the rest of the stuff out, it will be good for us. Hopefully the new manager can help us do that.”

The Scout Says: Yet to score in six league appearances, Altidore’s only strike for the Black Cats has come courtesy of the Capital One Cup against MK Dons. The big forward returned to scoring form for the US national team against Jamaica at the weekend, however, and with Steven Fletcher still stuck in the treatment room with a dislocated shoulder, Altidore will be tasked with grabbing the goals under new boss Gus Poyet as Sunderland ready themselves for a schedule which hands them a home derby with Newcastle and a trip to Hull in the next three Gameweeks.

Townsend Worry for England

Roy Hodgson has revealed Andros Townsend requires a fitness check ahead of England’s game with Poland tonight after the wide man picked up a problem in last week’s win over Montenegro.

“Andros took a slight knock on Friday so we will have to monitor that but we are hopeful he will be okay for Tuesday.”

The Scout Says: In spite of his showing for England last Friday, Townsend has been far from impressive domestically. While Hodgson’s prognosis suggests the winger is likely to be available, his first-team place at the Lane is coming under increasing threat with Aaron Lennon pushing for a return to fitness and Erik Lamela also in contention after a spate of sub appearances. Granted, his confidence will be sky-high after his goal against Montenegro but with just a single assist to his name over six league starts for Tottenham, there’d be no real surprise if Townsend made way over the next few weeks as Villas-Boas looks to rectify a run which has harvested just six goals in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Currently got my armband on Michu (c) over Lukaku, Sturridge and Rooney. Is this wise? He's been the most well rested over the break and is playing Sunderland. Surely the best option?

I'm in the same boat with Lukaku/Suarez/Giroud/Michu/Ozil and even Terry to some extent all viable captain options this week.

Suarez is edging it though, just.

What are everyone's thoughts on doubling, or even tripling up on defences? There seem to be two lines of argument regarding this. Those for it say it one clean sheet results in points for five players in a team, unlike a goal which generally only benefits the scorer and the assiter. Whereas those against it say a single goal conceded reduces the points potential of five players, making it a risk alternative.

But with certain teams doing well defensively, can you make a case for the 'ultimate double triple'

For example, for the opening seven:

Boruc, Fonte, Lovren, Kyle Walker, Dawson and Vertonghen would have earned 27 clean sheets, two goals and 30 bonus points. Playing all five week in week out would have given you 183 points. (This is mental arithmetic on the fly so I may be off a by a point or two here!)

Thrown in this season's midfield performers such as Ramsey and Yaya Toure and three of the sub-premium 'form' forwards, and you're looking at a very high GW7 ranking, before you've even thought about captaincy choices.

If you think that your keeper will grab a CS then why not add more of the same defence?

Tosey was famous for it. I think 3x LIV defence was his thing last season. When it was good, it was great but when they shipped a late goal, it was killing (psychologically).

Well. I counted my points from defence so far, and had a result some 60 points less than that. Which suggests I should have done what you say.... except:

      1. all bar one GW I have played with only 3 defenders, meaning that in addition I have got points from combined 13 players these rounds that your system would not have got. Have they brought me that extra 60? With as little as 4,5/player/round they would.

      2. Well, I did foresee Southampton good defence and have been doubling them up since the beginning, but who foresaw Spurs solid defence? I mean, you can put it this way: you go here with a best case scenario, but one could have also predicted two of last seasons top defences, Arsenal and ManU being top this time too. So, going with Szcezscny, Sagna, Koscielny, Ferdinand, Rafael and Jones. You see what I mean? That is combined disaster, but would have looked pretty good before the season started. Slightly less bad you could go with West Ham and City. Wit hall rotation and injuries you could be screwed by now. I was with my West Ham defender.

      3. Finally, the thing is that you usually don't get the best points by playing whole season those players who end up with the most points. You do better by having a combination with which you can predictably have a strong first XI each round by switching according to fixtures.

      1. The point hits are negligible in the grand scheme of things anyway, 3 points makes it even better. I don't see the need for an extra 1.0, without RVP and the premium midfielders scoring heavily, and southampton providing cheap defensive cover, it's possible to get a very sound team even with 90 million I'd wager. 10 points is just too small an amount at this stage in the season.

I think such attempts at humour are in really bad taste and should be moderated. An animal falling to a horrific death is not funny, and the farmer should be prosecuted for allowing his animals to stray so close to such a hazard!

My god, is it still only Tuesday? 😥 Help me plan my GW9 transfer, it'll help us all pass the time.

    Vidic - Coleman - Walker - Collins - Chester

5.5m under the mattress and I want Terry (or maybe Louise if the whisky-supping devil on my shoulder gets his way).

    Who should leave?
    A) Collins :: fixes a dead player but restricts future midfield investment
    B) Vidic :: leaves my warchest intact but drops a good CB with good fixtures
    C) One of the others?

    Migs (Rudd)

Zaba - Kos - Clyne (Murner - Brayford)

Hazard - Michu - Eriksen - Barkley (Brady)

    Rooney - Giroud (c) - Sturridge

    0.6 in bank.

    Should I...

A: Murner > Chico/Davies (and play over Clyne)
    B: Zaba > Terry
    C: Haz > Oscar (sideways)

    Mignolet

    mata, hazard, lucas leiva, mirallas
    aguero, rvp

Captain the right midfielder/striker and you can get over 30pts from a single player.

Defenders can only dream of those heights. Hu ll get can't a Cs, Faye = 6pts. Chelsea get a CS, Terry = 6pts. Same wherever it comes from, max1. Can't get more than 1 Cs.

You can't rely on bps and goals for defenders. No explosion potential. None are a must.

😕 I understand what you're saying but you're phrasing it very oddly. By following what you're saying I should get Danny Graham and captain him - a goal is a goal, wherever it comes from.

The difference is how many they will get over a period of several weeks. Over 10 gameweeks, a Chelsea defender will get more clean sheets than a Hull defender. Many more.

Granted, but the upgrade cost for defenders is very low compared to up front. An extra 1.5 in defence can get you more points over a long period than spending 1.5 up front.

To be clear, I'm not absolutely convinced either way, just arguing the toss as it were. I think it was 3rdTurd who started advocating the approach of looking at money spent this way, which is why I give it credence.

Last season Utd scraped a 2-3 away win and an unconvincing 2-1 at OT. Southampton are a better team now so could win this week. Having said that I don't think they will.

Also i believe its has nothing to do with teams not being scared, it has alot to do with Utd not playing very well, many players are under performing and RVP has been unlucky not to score 4/5 more.

The win at Sunderland last time out will give them a lift and we will see a much better team at OT this week.

Teams will automatically become less scared of teams who are struggling of form.

Southampton are better defensively than WBA, but can't see United having any problems.

Too many good (c) options this week with Ozil,Giroud,Suarez and Michu as potential choices(I also have Rooney)
    This is really tough.

Giroud is probably the safest bet for one goal anyway.

most likely to go nuts for you :

      Suarez then Ozil.

Cos I think Michu is fixture proof .... as likely to score against chelsea as Crystal Palace.

But also as unlikely to score against both.

But main reason is Sunderland were almost good last time out and were at least trying so easy match .... I dont think so.

Will Michu score though ... I think so.

For me I think Sunderland might put up a show in Poyets first game and be hard to beat.

Safe option might be Ozil - you have to think he will get an assist at least.

It is a nice problem to have when you have a lot of potential (C)s

Lukaku only played 60-70 mins. if I remember correctly and will be the same with this one since they´re already qualified.

      Though one...

I don´t see Townsend having legs after 2 international games.

Moses is Moses, 2 or 3 points guaranteed not much more.

Nastasic isn´t an attacking defender and West Ham are in goal-scoring form...

      Townsend if needs be.

Pondering the merits of buying either Suarez or Sturridge if money was no option as a season keeper. What do you guys think?

Suarez, you know he has what it takes to be a consistent top scorer. Sturridge (although I've had him from GW1) is in brilliant form, but I just think you can be more confident in Suarez to pull in points and not get injured

I like your thinking Happy One. Sturridge's form has been fabulous so far but he's more injury prone than Suarez. I see Suarez as the spearhead of the attack flanked by Coutinho and Sturridge moving forward.

On the contrary I think Sturridge is much more suited to the lone forward role while Suarez endless running and better creativity means he is more likely to be moved around, also Rodgers knows Suarez will be going to RM sooner or later and needs to develop Sturridge into his main striker.

Suarez for sure! More consistent of the two and physically less injury prone... mentally, not so much.

I think Sturridge will have more points at the end of the season - Suarez will inevitably get sent off a few times for cannibalism, the resulting points drop and 6 games out will hurt him.
