Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Gerrard out of England Squad

Steven Gerrard and Kyle Walker pull out of the England side to face Chile, while Daniel Sturridge misses training with a foot problem. Michu is hoping to recover quickly from his knee and ankle problems, Luis Suarez’ Uruguay are on the verge of qualifying for next year’s World Cup, while Daniel Agger and Cesar Azpilicueta discuss their recent returns to first-team duty for Liverpool and Chelsea respectively:

Gerrard and Walker Withdraw from Chile Showdown

The Liverpool captain and Tottenham right-back were amongst the latest names to call off from tomorrow evening’s friendly against Chile. Daniel Sturridge also sat out yesterday’s training session due to a foot knock and will be monitored ahead the Wembley showdown.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind that neither Gerrard or Walker have been ruled out of Tuesday’s game with Germany, it seems more than likely that their omission from tomorrow’s is merely precautionary; indeed, Gerrard’s problem is reported to be the hip complaint Brendan Rodgers spoke of recently. After a slow start to the season, Gerrard has picked up in performance, with attacking returns in five of the last six now – averaging seven points per game over that period. Sturridge, on the other hand, has now drawn back-to-back blanks and with Fantasy managers scrambling to bring Luis Suarez on board, has been sold by over 77,000 already this week. Walker has City, United and Liverpool in the next five and has already been shipped out by almost 7,000 Fantasy managers – he’s failed to pick up any attacking returns in the first 11 Gameweeks and received bonus in just two of the seven occasions his side have registered a clean sheet.

Michu Steps Up Injury Recovery

Reports in the local press suggest Michu is hoping for an early return from the knee and ankle problems that kept him out of last week’s draw with Stoke. The Swansea midfielder has been training on an anti-gravity treadmill in an attempt to keep up his fitness ahead of the upcoming trip to Fulham.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind Michael Laudrup admitted Michu had been playing through the pain barrier prior to being sidelined, it seems unlikely he’ll be keen to rush him back unless he is 100%. With no goals or assists in his last five league outings, the knocks and niggles and packed fixture schedule clearly took their toll on the Spaniard, who has scored just twice this season in the top-flight. Prior to last week’s home game with the Potters, Swansea had scored in just one of the previous four matches but with Wilfried Bony bagging a brace in the 3-3 draw, Laudrup certainly doesn’t need to rush back the former Rayo Vallecano player just yet. Down to 8.7 in FPL Michu has an 8% ownership now and could be a decent differential if he can rediscover the form and fitness of the season gone by.

Suarez On Verge of World Cup Qualification

The Liverpool forward played 81 minutes of Uruguay’s 5-0 first-leg World Cup play-off win in Jordan yesterday afternoon. Given his recent form, Suarez surprisingly play no part in any of the goals before he was replaced by Diego Forlan with nine minutes left on the clock. After the game, the Uruguay coach discussed his plans for the return leg:

“This result will put us in a good position for the second leg. We will play with the same formation to honour the Uruguayan fans who will fill the stadium next Wednesday, as I heard that 60,000 tickets were sold.”

The Scout Says: The quotes are somewhat open to interpretation but it may well be that Suarez is handed another start in next Wednesday’s return leg in Uruguay. With his country virtually assured of their place in next year’s finals after yesterday’s result, there was hope Suarez would be rested for a match that kicks off at 11pm – he’s then set for a long-haul flight back home prior to Goodison’s lunchtime derby the following Saturday. His Fantasy owners will be hoping his game time is minimal next week, though there appears little doubt that, barring any injury, Brendan Rodgers will start him at Goodison regardless.

Agger Determined Nail Regular Role Again

The Dane has discussed his keenness to continue in the Liverpool XI after being handed his first start since Gameweek 5 in the 4-0 win over Fulham last weekend:

“It is difficult to describe but I want to play all the time, every single game. When you are not playing that is difficult but, while that is sad, I just try to work even harder every single day in training, not complaining just doing everything a bit extra. I am more than capable of being in the team – I feel I belong there – but it is the manager’s decision and sometimes that is difficult to change in training. You need to grab the chance when it is there – that is what football is all about. I’m not the type of player who needs an explanation, I just carry on with my thing and try to do everything to get back into the team. It’s been a bit longer than I hoped for but when you get the chance you need to do everything to keep your place.”

The Scout Says: Agger’s return coincided with Liverpool’s first clean sheet since Gameweek 3 and highlighted how crucial his contribution at the back is for the Merseysiders. Brendan Rodgers’ team have conceded just one goal in the five games the Dane has started, compared to nine in the six matches without him. With Martin Skrtel also impressing at the heart of the defence, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho may find it difficult to oust the pair if Rodgers continues with a back-four again – big-money buy Sakho’s presence at the back has failed to impress, with the Reds conceding in all seven games he has started.

Azpilicueta Hopeful of Regular Role on the Left

The Spaniard is optimistic he can keep ahead of Ashley Cole in the left-back pecking order after being preferred to the England star in the last couple of games in all competitions:

“Every time I have more minutes in this position I feel better. Provided I can play and be useful to the team, I am delighted. If necessary, I will play on the left for the whole season. When I was at Marseille, I played left-back several times. The job is basically the same. You are using your other foot obviously, but it is something I am working on in training and that is helping me to get better.”

The Scout Says: Cole was dropped to the bench after an ineffectual display in the Gameweek 10 defeat at Newcastle, with Jose Mourinho singling out his poor performance. Previously regarded as an “untouchable”, the former Arsenal man clearly has a job on his hands to regain his role – Mourinho has admitted Cole is ultimately his preferred first-choice but has admitted that until his form improves, Azpilicueta is there on merit. Essentially, it leaves just John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic as the only nailed-on options in Chelsea’s back-four now, with Gary Cahill and David Luiz left to battle it out for the role alongside Terry at the heart of defence.

Whittaker Frustrated by Lack of Game Time

The Norwich defender has voiced his concerns to the Scottish press after dropping down the pecking order under Chris Hughton in recent matches.

“I found myself out of the team after one poor result we had and when you’re not playing week in, week out you struggle for match fitness. That’s why it’s frustrating because I don’t feel I’ve done anything too wrong to not be playing. I feel I should be playing. It would be easier to take if I felt I was playing badly. Every player knows when they’ve been poor or done well. When you’re playing poorly you put yourself up for being dropped, but I felt I was doing alright and scored a couple of goals. You rely on people dropping form or injuries, but your opportunity will come and that’s what I’m waiting on at the minute.”

The Scout Says: An injury to Seb Bassong proved crucial to Whittaker’s chances at the start of the season. With the Cameroon international injured and Russell Martin shifting to the centre to cover, Whittaker started the first four Gameweeks for the Canaries and quickly earned himself a bandwagon after racking up a goal, assist and clean sheet in the opening three fixtures. The recent 7-0 defeat by City has seen Bassong drop out of the XI, with Hughton opting for Ryan Bennett at centre-half instead – if the Norwich boss decides to shake things up again, though, he could move Martin back to the middle and allow Whittaker another stint on the right. Hughton’s side face just two of the current top eight in the next nine Gameweeks – a run that takes them into the New Year – suggesting their players could be worth considering; Turner, at 4.4, and 4.2 priced Martin Olsson (with starts in each of the last six) look the most secure of the cut-price options at the back.

My transfer plan for GW 14 relies on the following -

      Morrison only rising 0.1
      Hazard rising 0.1
      Remy Rising 0.3

This is going to be tight. Essentially what I need is a Morrison no show in GW12 and for Remy to rattle in a few.

    Christmas Shopping

Just take a look at the December schedule.

Gameweek 13 starts Sat Nov 30
Gameweek 14 starts Tues Dec 4
Gameweek 15 starts Sat Dec 7
Gameweek 16 starts Sat Dec 14
Gameweek 17 starts Sat Dec 21
Gameweek 18 starts Thurs Dec 26
Gameweek 19 starts Sat Dec 28
Gameweek 20 starts Wed Jan 1
    Break until January 11.

Hectic isn’t it? First thing that springs to mind is that this is a guilt edged opportunity for the FFS community to rise up the rankings triumphant, while the casual hordes plummet.

So let’s start coming up with some key strategies and players over that period so we can teach those Yaya Toure-owning-part timers what real fantasy football management is about.

As you can see that’s eight fixtures in a month. Rotation will surely come into play. Who will be rotated? Who is rotation proof? Is it better to go for the main players in weaker team such as Benteke, Suarez or Remy rather than rotatable players in strong squads like Aguero?

    What about fixtures?

In terms of clean sheet potential their looks to be a lot of value in the ranks of Villa, Norwich, Everton and Newcastle.

That places Vlaar, Jagielka firmly on the radar.

Chelsea until Gameweek 17 at least look great as well.

    Step forward Mr Terry.

In terms of attack potential Villa and Norwich again come out well. West Bromwich Albion also have strong attacking fixtures over that period.

One or two of Benteke, Snodgrass and Sessegnon could be key during this period.

And of course there’s Man Utd, who from Gameweek 15-19 have one of the sweetest runs of fixtures imaginable. Is Christmas the time to treat ourselves to RVP? Or will we make do with his pound shop version, Wayne Rooney?

Squad wise they are in comparison to Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea who all basically have great strength in depth.

Suarez and Sturridge are undroppable due to their lack of strength. Can the same be said of Aguero. Negredo, Rooney, RVP, Torres or Eto.

I'd say Aguero/Rooney/RVP are very undropable, (when fully fit in RVP's case). With such an open league, a strong xmas period could be very important. Resting key players could spell embarrassment. In terms of Torres/Eto'o, neither have been regulars at any point.

Its not usually a northern thing. Its a bad stadium or bad concourse issue usually. EG the police and council around Arsenal are very prickly about health and safety.

I remember one year when Man City's home match was practically the only one on (Tevez (c) for me that week 😎 )

Given the fixtures for Liverpool and Villa I think I'll have a strikeforce of Suarez, Sturridge, Benteke all being well. Very little chance of rotation and high goal involvement in teams likely to rack up some goals.

Not touching the Manchester rotation mob with a bargepole.

I've got almost no idea to what extent RVP/Rooney will be rested/rotated and the fixtures are patchy - lets face it, if they get rested it will be for the easy games where we'd like to captain them! I don't like that worry.

I've been a whittingham owner for ages and while rotation is not a threat...he can't get above 2pts....I'd prefer the explosive riskier picks over him.

I actually don't think its that hectic. Most of December looks reasonably easy up until the christmas/New year period. I don't think there is a need to panic as most the rotation will occur mainly on December 28, just one game week.

RVP will be very tempting for those fixtures but don't forget that Moyes seems to have no qualms about resting him, as he showed early on in the season. Also if Suarez and Aguero keep up their form, how would you fit him in? The rest of your team would have to be dirt cheap if you want to keep the other big guns up top.

Nice thinkin, Jonty. Shouldnt the Christmas period signal the Aguero--->Benteke squad in the Roo-Suarez-Aguero frontlines? I'm thinking about it in order to bring in Baines since his fixtures from GW16 onward look rather tasty.

I'm looking at Remy or Benteke at the moment for Sturridge to slot in alongside Aguero and Suarez... Villa and Benteke's attacking form worries me though. Remy looks good for the next few.

I'd considered Rooney - Aguero and Suarez but I prefer having that extra 3m or so to invest in defence and midfield.

This is the hardest part - finding a balance between getting players in the team that are non European game players, yet still quality and providing some assurance of points. It is hard to take all of your big boys out - but might be more value in looking for those lightly raced injury returnees like Walcott, Silva, Coutinho etc.

To be honest this is a problem throughout the season - just magnified more at this time. I've had plenty of Liverpool and Everton in my side since post DGW and can't see that changing. With Southampton/West Brom and now Newcastle also offering some decent options all over the pitch I think I'll only be hanging on to the real game changers like Ozil till Jan...

As much as rotations comes in, I tend to concur with Ryan that it won't be too bad and mostly on Dec 28 or 26 should the team have the easier fixture that day.

The other way of looking at this section of the season is that it's the time to start taking some short term decisions since we have to wildcard in Jan.

So there comes a point in Dec when we can start to disassemble our squads for short term gain with a date in mind that we repair it using the wildcard.

ok, so just before GM6 started, after my brother had made no transfers and his team was heading for the graveyard with all the other dead teams, i kindly offered to manage his team.

I used the WC the night before GW6 started, the team was ranked 1.3million and had a total value of 98.9mil. Leading into GW6 my regular team was sitting on a respectable 300k rank and had 102.2mil TV.

Fast forward to GW12, after some terrible moves (getting Silva in for Michu to avoid price drops a couple of days before he got injured) my regular team has embarrassingly joined the millionaires club and my brothers team which i took over, is slowly climbing the ranks and is at 700k.

This makes no sense though as i spend all my FPL time on my regular team, tinkering and making decisions based on stats etc. I literally spend 10 minutes a week on my brothers team (usually a saturday morning) to make a transfer or 2, confirm my lineup and choose my captain for the weekend.

I have learnt a many lessons from this. lets just hope i don't forget what they are

    Lukaku's decline: the Pienaar-Baines Hypothesis.

My continuing struggles to understand Lukaku's sudden decline have led me to a hypothesis: it's Pienaar's fault.

Without Pienaar on the pitch, Lukaku scored 4 goals in 231 minutes
With Pienaar on the pitch, Lukaku scored 1 goal in 277 minutes

The problem isn't Pienaar himself, it's what he does to Baines. As noted by Jack(off)attack yesterday, with Pienaar on the pitch, Baines feels comfortable coming forward knowing he's got cover and he puts in such a lot more crosses. But Lukaku doesn't like those crosses, he prefers play to come through the middle of the park so that he can use his pace and power to beat defenders.

This is a hypothesis. To be honest, I don't know whether it stands up to any scrutiny. I don't think there's any doubt that Baines does his thing much more often with Pienaar on the pitch. But is it true that Lukaku doesn't prosper from Baines' style of creativity?

Gotta say Granville pointed it out re Baines and Pienaar I just went and looked at the stats to prove the point.

Nice post though, hopefully it is Pienaar's fault as I've sold Lukaku 😀

Well, it could be key to understanding what's going on at Everton. I'm agonising over whether to drop Lukaku for a hit. I'd be happy to ditch him for a punt on Bony if I were confident that his slump will continue.

But I'm conscious that I made a lot of mistakes last season by dropping players after a little slump (e.g. Demba Ba, Michu) and they went on to tear it up.

i was puting it down to osman. with barkley in team defences had another direct threat and had to adjust to suit, but with osman in he slows the play down and doesnt run directly at the defence, making it easier for them to double team lukaku

Ah I see. Definitely true that Lukaku scored more with Barkley on the pitch. It could be that.

Very hard to tell whether Martinez will continue to leave Barkley out though. The Everton forums are full of fans screaming for Barkley to be returned to the starting lineup, but since when did managers listen to fans?

          "only" three reliable captains 🙂

There are rarely more than three reliable captains. Last season we had RVP, Bale and Suarez (for the short periods when he wasn't suspended). Season before was mostly just RVP.

Is 2 Newcastle too much (already have Remy & thinking of getting Cabaye as well)

        For a -4 hit
        Siggy out, Cabaye/R. Morrison in
        Dawson out, Evra in

        Mignolet
        Baines, Terry, Evra (Clyne, Burner)
Ozil, Ramsey, Lallana, Cabaye/R. Morrison (Barkley)
        Remy (c), Suarez, Aguero

Cabaye (Nor - h) has a better fixture than Morrison (Che - h). People have mentioned Newcastle's inconsistency but Newcastle are on fire atm. My plan was to bring in Cabaye for gw12 & R. Morrison for gw13 (ful - h) for Barkley.

Opinions please - Cabaye or R. Morrison for gw12?

        Boruc McGregor

        G Johnson Coleman Shaw Ward

        Oscar Almafitano Ozil Ramsey Barkley

        ---------Rooney Suarez Aguero--------

        0FT. Keep?

Would prefer Jazunaj and Ravel over Barks and Almafitano but probably not work point hits.

I did a little analysis on Lukaku vs Rooney vs Remy.

I considered these factors in the analysis:
        a) Player's goal-threat form on the last 4 & 6 gameweek,
        b) Team's attacking form
        c) Team's home / away attacking performance.
        d) Opponent's defensive form
        e) Opponent's home/away defensive performance

        Conclusion were

        1) Rooney is the most on form player in the last 4 GWs, dominating in terms of goals (joint with Remy), attempts, etc. And he has a bonus from his assist potential

        2) Remy is the most on form player in the last 6 GWs dominating all attacking statistics. This is understandable as Newcastle's last 4 fixture were shitty - but despite that Remy still keep up with Rooney.

        3) Lukaku is off form, in the last 4. Last 6 is better but it's like ages ago since his 0 attempts on goal in 2 the last two games

        4) MU is scoring freely - 8 in the last 4 followed by Newcastle 6 in the last 4 (keep in mind of their fixture).

        5) MU has no problem playing away from home averaging 2 goals per game on the road - surprisingly higher than both Newcastle and Everton goal scoring rate at home (1.4 and 1.2 pg respectively).

        6) Cardiff is a surprise package home to MU. We might thought that they are tight at home but that might not be the case. They concede a lot of shots and chances - actually worse even compared to West Brom and Stoke. Rooney with his finishing touch might find it fruitful against Cardiff.

        7) Tottenham is simply tight at the home. It's gonna be a tough fixture for Rooney.

        8) Norwich, no doubt, is the worst defensive team at the moment. Conceding the most goals, shots, etc in the last 4. 12 goal conceded in the last 4 - is double than any other opponent side in this context. And their away form is even worse.

        9) West Brom and Stoke. defensively, is very similar. Very little to separate those two. Conceding above 1.5 goals / game in the last 4 as well as both having worse away record than their home, both fixtures are good for Remy and Lukaku respectively.

        10) Liverpool is doing okay defensively, conceding just above 1 goal per game. But keep in mind that only recently both Agger and Skrtel are back, and they are back to 4 at the back which might tighten things a bit

So yeah, even after all this it's still very hard for me to decide which one I'm gonna go.
Currently I have Lukaku but I don't like his and Everton's form.
I would go to Rooney for sure if it wasn't for Tottenham away after Cardiff.
Remy is a nice 2 week punt but he's very inconsistent.

        Geez..
