Community

The Community Round Up

This week has seen the re-emergence of rotating defender strategies, a concept long thought lost, as premium defenders dominated the scoring in the first few weeks of the season.  The community has also been taking a look at potential improvements to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and its bonus points system, as well as airing their ongoing frustrations surrounding those pesky Yaya Toure- and Aaron Ramsey-owning casuals. We catch up with the week’s discussions, along with the very latest in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Among our most popular posts this week was Maxi’s soapbox-style discussion about team value and his criticism of those placing too much emphasis on how much their Fantasy squad is worth. He ponders whether money made on a player that is a season keeper really matters.

The structure and rules of the FPL game also came under discussion this week, courtesy of Evs. Among ideas to improve the game was Stinkfly’s suggestion that managers be restricted to just two players per team. Also, Gimli Son Of Gloin wants keepers to be given more points for a clean sheet, while Ryan called for defensive midfielders to get rewarded for their hard work protecting the backline.

Granville was also on hand to say his piece, aiming his ire specifically the Bonus Points System (BPS). He was concerned that a whopping seven players gained bonus points during Crystal Palace’s largely drab 1-0 victory over West Ham. Could the BPS be improved? Champ certainly thinks so, with his call to “bring back the man in the stands”.

With premium midfielders starting to pick up points, those who sing at the church of cheap defensive rotation were in good voice this week. Innsie’s post looking at the best options was particularly good, particularly for those already with a Crystal Palace defender. Bankst was another looking at rotation options, this time focusing on goalkeepers. A blend of Cardiff stopper David Marshall and Palace’s Julián Speroni was picked out as particularly enticing.

Talking of keepers, Evs was one of many in the unenviable predicament of having both his stoppers, Southampton’s Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis, injured going into Gameweek 14. During his discussion about what his fellow sufferers plan to do he talked up (and ended up drafting in) Manchester City’s goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, while Hamerstergod was eyeing up Cardiff’s Marshall.

Boruc’s injury will have come as a blow to many a “casual manager” – those who put their trust in the bandwagons and adopt a fire-and-forget policy. On that front, HVT had a go at creating the the definitive ‘casual’ team. True to form this season, it turns out that he created a pretty impressive lineup.

And finally, ahead of Gameweek 14, Konig Luther provided this interesting post about how many points are needed to reach key ranking achievements. Giggs Boson was among those pleased to discover he was just a whisker away from the top 10,000 at the time.

Community Leagues & Cups

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing League has lost another 62 managers across Gameweeks 13 and 14, leaving 488 to continue on.

Evs, Bootsy, Athletico Timbo, Crouch Potato, Chazza and Koneheads currently lead In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues.  Meanwhile, his cup competition has reached the quarter finals stage with La Roja among the community names still involved.

In Fifa Las Vegas’s ‘Championship style’ competitionSomebody’s Gonna Get Lit Up and Champ are currently embroiled in the final, which is taking place over Gameweek 15.

A reminder that the FFS Paddy Power Cup Third Round was played out over this weekned’s matches – we’ll bring you a full run-down of the results and the draw for the next round on Tuesday.

Don't know why I did Boruc > Szczesny 🙁 Should of got Krul instead... Oh well!

    GW16
    Szczesny
    Chester - Coleman - Terry
    Barkley - Hazard - Ramsey - Ravel
    Aguero - Rooney (c) - Suarez

KD (inj) - Luna (inj) - Clyne (inj) - Cabaye (sus)

    Worth taking a hit anywhere?

Hey mate! Just thought I should of got Krul instead and with the extra cash upgraded KD > Speroni to have 2 playing keepers. Looking at ditching Terry in a few weeks as well, most likely to Koscielny.

The price rise strikes again! 😉

Yeah I see why you would do that now but be consoled in the fact that he will get more CS than Krul.

Damn my premature transfers! Lol. Just looked at my team now, next week I might do Clyne & Luna > Debuchy & Ward for a hit if there are no major issues to address.

Depends on what you bought him for. We can't answer without that information. You get half the price rise since you bought him, but it rounds down, not up. So if you bought him at 8.7, you're safe when he drops to 9.1; but if you bought him at 8.6, your selling price will drop to 8.8

Jagielka might be the BAP king but if I'm paying 5.5+ for an Everton defender I don't want to watch the game counting his BPS total.

    Boring.

    Coleman's the man.

Cash in on Mert anyway....Had it not been for that shirt pull and the accompanying assist and 3 baps (Kos was on for the three baps prior to that) there's nothing to pick beteen the Arsenal CB's....He won't have his shirt pulled every week.

Someone (Keith perhaps, apologies) posted a smart take on it last week - Jags has only had BAPS from games where Everton have scored 1 goal or fewer but the upcoming fixtures don't look like having a lot of narrow wins in them.

The chances of lukaku waking up injured is very low as he got no midweek games.. so think of it this way.. if one of your first team players gets injured and you need to replace him would you mind doing giroud to lukaku for a hit. I honestly dont think you would as it saves you alot of cash and lukaku has the potential to go crazy this week(and the next 6).. so do it. if all goes well you'll have no other injuries and a lot of cash to spend in Jan

To repeat Keith's analysis - Jags is only worth it for Bonus Points which he only gets when Everton score 1 goal or fewer. Upcoming fixtures look full of goals so I don't think he'll be getting many BAPs.

Therefore, Coleman for attacking potential or Distin for value.

@Roscola/Whoever else was asking.. Found it.. Written before the Arsenal game so ignore that result 😉

Just did an analysis on Baps for Jagielka and Distin and Everton in general
    1. Everton Drew a game 0 - 0
    Happened 4 times ...
Jags 10 bonus points and 37 bps
Distin 3 bonus points but 34 bps.. missed more baps by a nose hair

    2. Everton won a game 1-0
    Happened 2 times...
Jagielka 5 bonus points and 20 bps
Distin 2 bonus points and 16 bps

For every other possible result Both Jagielka and Distin did NOT get any bonus points with the bonus going the attackers or the opposition depending on the result(Jags got 2 bonus for an assist but both have a similar negligible goal threat overall). Playing the odds... Everton are playing
FUL swa SUN SOT stk NOR
Can see them winning those by more than 1 goal(so no baps for either), while the likelihood of a 0-0 happening is one of the lowest odds while betting(yup i gamble).

Considerin the difference in price is 0.7 at the moment and nearly a million by the time we want them for next GW i'd say Distin is the better option easily BEARING in mind the price difference. Even if it is a 0-0/1-0 Distin is always just one tackle/interception away from stealing baps from Jagielka.

Choose to ignore/use this information as you see fit. Cheers.. Coleman is an altogether different beast considerin attackin returns

Top top stuff. I think Coleman still has enough attacking potential to outdo both, but I think the 'BAP' magnet tag is being disproved a bit with a lot of players. CBs only attract BP in 0-0s, so since there were a lot of 0-0s in the first few rounds of fixtures it looked like CBs would give the best value. Not saying that's not true, but we probably all overestimed the effect.

I'm expecting clean sheets in the process, Nd possibly some 1-0 results. Whilst Everton have the potential to score more, I just have a weird feeling that Delofeou (or however you spell it) will start more, and personally I think he is quite selfish, which may mean less chances created. Just a thought thou, Everton have been an unpredictable beast so far.

great stats, weird conclusion though. so it's been tight between them on bps and distin could "steal" some baps if gets additional tackles/interception but jagielka bosses the bonus on the basis of 15 GWs. why would this change? it's not random. distin will be close but not there also in the future imo. atm jagielka has 18 bonus to distins 6, and only 15 GWs in. it's 30 points over season if it continues and definitely worth 0.7. attacking stats might be the same i dont have them. but jagielka has scored 2 goals last 2 seasons, 5 goals in last 3. whereas distin hasnt scored a goal in two years and 2 goals over the last 3. my conclusion is get jagielka, easily.

    how did everyones gameweek go?

57 here with Vorm, Chester and Brady to play. So probably end up with 63.

my team at the moment is

    Vorm (Boruc)

    GJ / Terry / Clyne / Gabbidon / Chester

    Brady / Gerrard / Ramsey / Morrison / Sess

    Rooney / Aguero / Suarez

    I have 2FT £1.2m ITB

I am considering GJ > Distin or Boruc > Howard and Gerrard > Mirallas... I can afford Hazard but the way Chelsea are playing I don't feel comfortable paying 9.8 for him. I'll just wait for Oscar to return.

    anything else anyone would do?

I am not getting lukaku, sticking with the big 3 as Rooney is now my main differential

Who is most essential out of Lukaku, Hazard and Rooney?

I would say Rooney as he provides an armband option when Suarez/Aguero have tough match-ups.. and he also has some peachy away fixtures coming up. United have been performing better away from OT..

Rooney seems to be the best differential, but there's plenty of attacking options.
My money would be on Hazard
