Scout Scribbles – Silva Boost for City

David Silva returns from injury to notch in City’s superb comeback win over Bayern Munich. Phil Jones fires United to victory at home to Shakhtar Donetsk. Liverpool’s midfield worries grow ahead of the weekend trip to White Hart Lane, where Jan Vertonghen may be sidelined for the next month, while David Luiz and Oscar return from injury as Jose Mourinho looks to make changes against Steaua Bucharest this evening:

Silva Back as City Shock Bayern

The Spaniard returned from a calf injury to spark a stunning fightback away to the Champions League holders last night. Manuel Pellegrini was without the suspended Yaya Toure and also chose to leave Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany on the bench and rest Samir Nasri altogether but his side were still able to recover from going 2-0 down within 12 minutes. Silva was fielded in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation and made way after 73 minutes of a successful comeback to instantly catch the eye of onlooking Fantasy managers. He wasn’t the only attacking midfielder to prosper, though; James Milner produced a goal and two assists, whilst Jesus Navas earned himself an assist. Stand-in skipper Aleksandar Kolarov was also amongst the scorers – the left-back benefitted from the absence of Aguero and Toure to fired home from the spot.

The Scout Says: Silva’s return to action arrives just ahead of a schedule which hands City three home games and a trip to Fulham in the next four Gameweeks. The visit of Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime may just deter some from jumping on the bandwagon early, though – while City have hammered the likes of United and Spurs amongst others at the Etihad, the Gunners have the best away record in the league so far. Nonetheless, if Silva is deemed fit enough to face the European champions, it’s difficult to see him not starting against the league leaders, given that a win would reduce the gap between the two clubs to just three points. For those Steven Gerrard owners looking for a way out, Silva looks an ideal differential replacement (3% ownership), though, having broken down with injury twice already this term, his acquisition doesn’t come without some risk attached. After the game, his manager conceded Silva “could not play more than 70 minutes” – an indication that, while he may get a weekend start, Pellegrini may not give him the entire match just yet.

Jones The Goal Hero for United

David Moyes’ side recovered from back-to-back home defeats in the league to squeeze past their Ukrainian visitors last night. The United boss started with Wayne Rooney as the lone forward, utilising Shinji Kagawa in “the hole” before the arrival of Robin van Persie just after the hour mark saw the home side move to a two-man frontline, with Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj out wide. Neither of the two forwards were able to find the net, though, with Phil Jones – utilised in midfield alongside Tom Cleverley once again – firing the only goal of the game.

The Scout Says: Having used van Persie somewhat cautiously last night, Moyes is clearly still concerned over the Dutchman’s ongoing groin problem and, as the festive program picks up, Rooney’s consistency of game time remains the safest best for those eying up United’s attack. Last night’s result continued a run of poor attacking displays in front of their own supporters – Moyes’ side have now failed to score more than a single goal in nine of 13 matches in all competitions at Old Trafford under the new manager. Given their lack of cutting edge at home, three road trips in the next four (avl, WHM, hul, nor) are likely to suit the champions, though Moyes has concerns at the back ahead of those matches, with Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra all missing out last night. Jonny Evans’ start looks a little more secure if the former two remain sidelined, though, with a single clean sheet in 11 Gameweeks, it’s fair to say Moyes’ side have hardly impressed at the back, either.

Midfield Worries for the Reds

Reports indicate that Steven Gerrard is set to be sidelined for six weeks with the hamstring injury that forced him off against West Ham at the weekend. Brendan Rodgers is believed to have further concerns after Jordan Henderson picked up an ankle problem against the Hammers – the midfielder has been wearing a protective boot since the incident, according to the local press, but the Reds are optimistic he will be available for the trip to Tottenham.

The Scout Says: The injuries could hardly have come at a worse time for the Merseysiders. Liverpool also have trips to City and Chelsea in the next four Gameweeks in their toughest away streak of the season – Gerrard and Henderson are the only two outfield players to have been named in the starting XI for all 15 of their side’s fixtures and are clearly vital to Rodgers’ plans. With a goal or assist in nine of the last 10, Gerrard’s expected absence is a huge blow for his manager but, from a Fantasy perspective, it may well bolster Luis Suarez’ chances of spot-kicks, though Daniel Agger offers an alternative. Rodgers rolled out a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and may continue with the same formation, partnering Joe Allen with Lucas in the double-pivot. If Henderson fails to recover in time, Iago Aspas or Victor Moses could come in out of the cold on the Reds’ right, lining up with Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho behind Suarez.

Mourinho Looking to Make Changes for Visit of Steaua

The Blues boss was handed a boost ahead of this evening’s visit of Steaua after David Luiz and Oscar were passed fit following recent injuries. The Brazilian duo have returned to full training and could well be handed starting roles along with Ashley Cole as Mourinho looks to freshen up his first-team as he attempts to clinch the three points which would see his side finish as group winners:

“I’m not going to play the same team as I did in the last match. I’m going to give a little rest to a couple of players, or three players. We have an important match on Saturday and we play a quarter-final next Tuesday. I don’t want to call it rotation because normally when you say rotate it comes with an idea that the team is weak but that’s not the case.”

The Scout Says: Cole’s return at left-back may well be temporary, with Cesar Azpilicueta favoured for the role by Mourinho over the last few matches. Luiz’ comeback may bring Gary Cahill’s run of starts under threat, though – the former Bolton man has has been named alongside John Terry in each of the last five but, given Chelsea’s lack of resilience, may well be sacrificed as his manager looks to freshen up his options. Oscar has dropped down to 8.8 after missing the last two Gameweeks, sold on by over 200,000 Fantasy managers, but now looks poised to cement his role in the XI ahead of run of three home games in four, starting with the visit of Palace this weekend. Mourinho’s decision to alternate a number his players will bode well for Eden Hazard’s owners – the Belgian could well be afforded the night off as his manager targets a return to winning ways after Saturday’s surprise loss away to Stoke.

Vertonghen Worry for Villas-Boas

Reports in the local press have suggested the Belgian may be sidelined until after the New Year with the ankle injury sustained at the end of the recent win at Fulham. Vertonghen is potentially looking at a four-week absence, though Spurs could finally be set to welcome back Danny Rose to the fold for this week’s Europa League match against Anzhi.

The Scout Says: Such a timescale on the sidelines would see the Belgian miss the next five Gameweeks, as the fixtures come thick and fast over the festive period. Ironically, Rose’s return would have finally allowed Vertonghen the chance to return to centre-half, having filled in at left-back for a number of weeks – certainly, Villas-Boas has a umber of options in the middle of his back-four and even fielded the versatile Etienne Capoue alongside Michael Dawson in the 2-1 win at Sunderland last time out. However Capoue, like Rose, is classified as a midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League  with a run of three home fixtures (WBA, STO, CPL) in four from Gameweek 18 onwards, the potential for clean sheets looks heightened, but with so much uncertainty in the middle, Kyle Walker looks the safest route if Vertonghen is indeed ruled out.

    The new holy midfield trinity?

With Walcott already registering two assists since his comeback, Silva getting on the score sheet last night and Hazard in explosive form are we seeing the emergence of a new holy trinity midfield template for the festive period and into 2014?

Can certainly see lots of January wildcards filled with those three in midfield.

Wenger is quite good at easing players back from injury...can see him being a regular starter in a week or two.

Replacing who? I can't see many being particularly nailed on with so many options behind Giroud.

          Flamini Ramsey
          Walcott Ozil Cazorla
          maybe?

Leaving the likes of Arteta, Wilshere, and when fit Ox / Podolski on the bench.

To be fair, Walcott has given them something completely different in the few minutes he's had - promising that he would give Wenger a different dimension.

        Not all of those.

Can see lots of teams having Theo, Haz, Silva and two of Suarez/Aguero and Rooney though - with Lukaku/Remy as the third striker.

All of those is doable for those with good team value - 108 + but the defence and other id spots would be awful.

I would love to think so. Folks like me, languishing in the gutter of the overall ranks, need new big hitters to break the template and give us a chance of gaining ground.

Silva - Yes (as long as he stays fit)
      Walcott - I don't yet know

Not while forwards are firing like they are. Those guys are doing alright but are nothing compared to the form of Suarez, Aguero, Rooney, and Lukaku at the moment. While the big budget forwards are firing to such an extent only very high value, very poor defence teams will have three premium midfielders.

If Wally nails down a spot in the first team, he will be a permanent fixture in my team alongside on of Hazard or Silva. I think Hazard (who I plan to bring in this week).

Making room for all three would probably mean downgrading Suarez or Aguero and I don't see that happening any time soon! That, or major surgery on my defence, which I'm quite happy with right now

I just looked and I'm pretty sure you'd do well to have more than one defender above the 4-4.5m bracket with those three in the midfield along with Aguero, Suarez and Lukaku.

I guess downgrading Lukaku to a cheap forward could also work, but let's face it, who is going to do that?

Yeah exactly what I would be doing to get in the 3.

I don't have Suarez (got rid of him on my wildcard for Giroud who had Palace and Stoke I think) as could also mean getting Terry instead of 4.5'er.

          Disaster.

I would have a team of

Vorm, Marshall (Vorm needs to go)
          Mert, Vlaar, Burner, Chester, Ward
          Walcott, Hazard, Silva, Mirallas, Morrison

I don't think we are seeing a holy trinity midfield just yet, but a template of 2 big hitters, a mid price and 2 cheap players has formed, and will probably continue if we want 3 strong players up top. That is without scrimping too much on the defence.

Ramsey is essential and Ozil, Yaya and Hazard have also proved their worth, but it is stretching the budget too far to include all four of these as well as three elite forwards.

We therefore have to consider slightly cheaper alternatives or players who might or might not prove equally successful later in the season, such as Walcott and Silva, as well as a number of decent budget options.

But there is no Holy Midfield Trinity this season, nor is there likely to be unless the choices are reduced by injuries. And they are a long way short of being compared to the original FPL Midfield Trinity of Lampard, Gerrard and Ronaldo.

Not sure I get you. This is a table of players who have had 5 or fewer shots on goal but scored 2 or more goals (in the last 4 weeks). It should be full of flash-in-the-pan players who got a bit lucky and in all likelihood won't get more.

Half those players aren't FPL options for me. Some players just need confidence & can continue their streak.

The thing with 4 and 10 (I hope you see it the way I do or this will be awkward) is that their key passes are probably top 2 in the league over the last 6-8 weeks. It does say a lot though, once Walcott/Silva are back and starting consistently I won't have or probably even want any of those players on that table.

        That's true.

Key passes don't have anything to do with this table (it's goals and shots only) but they do affect our perception of them as good options. Set those guys aside and the list looks a bit less perplexing.

Many managers prefer 3 prime + 2 chipies in mid regardless of stats and this can affect prices for mid-priced options, Paulinho has cost me 0.3m in TV already 🙁

If I do Chico to Distin (doubling with Coleman) I need to use my second FT as I am 0.1 short.

    Mignolet

    Distin Coleman Terry

    Hazard Ramsey Whittingham Ravel

    Rooney Suarez Aguero

    Lewis Shaw Sess Mert

    Any thoughts?

    A) Mignolet - Marshall (preparing for Lewis - Speroni)
    B) Sess - Fer
    C) Other

Doesn't look like major work for me.

Obviously ditch Chambers for a Palace or Cardiff defender (unless you have funds) and then you're set. I don't like Lampard but I understand why people have him and he has good fixtures now if he plays.

if i dont be in top 50k untill january WC i'll try something crazy and different

will be looking for team with good defesive fixures and then tripple up at their defence

aslo i would add there another team with great defesive fixures

    anyone has done this before?

so my startegy will be for example :

    EVE

    EVE , EVE , TOT , TOT ,+ 2 cheap 4.0M

-3 big hitting strikers (hoping for wally, silva and Haz) + Ravel and cheap

    -Aguero,Suarez and mid priced striker

    i will be playing 4-3-3

putting all eggs in one basket , but that's the plan if i dont manage to sneak in top 50k

i am gambler and this would be either brillinat or compleate dissaster

    **Long Post Alert**

This week is a proper head scratcher to pick the right captain!
Thought I put down my 2 cents on it. Along with rating out of 10

    Lukaku: (7.5/10)
+ Arguable has the best fixture this week on paper
    + Everton in fine form
    - Fulham under new manager. Could be hard to break down
    - Unlike Rooney,Suarez,Hazard & Aguero, can't create a chance on his own.
    - No set pieces

    Suarez:(7/10)
    + Fixture proof
+ In the form of his life
+ Could be on pens as well as hogging most direct FK
    - No Gerrard & Sturridge. Will have to do it all on his own
    - Spurs have picked their game up recently.

    Rooney(8.5/10)
+ He's been in fine form
+ On most Set Pieces. On pens if RVP doesn't start
+ Villa have been in a slump of their own
    - United have struggled recently

    Aguero(8/10)
+ Very consistent goal scorer. At the heart of everything City do.
+ City beasting it at the Etihad
    + Penalties in his locker
    - Facing a team who are unbeaten away from home since March
    - Arsenal have a good defensive record.

    Hazard()
    + Good fixture this week
+ Fair share of set pieces. On Pens if Lamps not on the pitch.
+ Known to be a flat track bully
    - Very unpredictable. Hot & Cold in equal measure
    - Palace under Pulis have been very resolute
    - Chelsea misfiring.

Hope this helps in making a decision!

I'm expecting United to bounce back.
With RVP inching towards full fitness, I think he could be in the points this week.
Add to that Vlaar could possibly miss out, which weakens Villa further imo.

      Lukaku could be on penalties.

Is Suarez fixture proof? In the sense that he can do well against any team sure but has he got 2+ goals against any top teams?

This season he's played 2 top teams, kept out vs Arsenal and a FK vs Everton that came from Pienaar being a little girl, although it was a great FK.

Chelsea misfiring - 14 goals in last 5, how exactly is that misfiring?

Villa in slump - Before last game, they were unbeaten in 5. How exactly is that slump?

Nastasic (5.2) and Chiriches (5.1) will be very tempting when they get back. Chiriches was great when he finally got his shot and Dawson's form over the last 6 weeks surely hasn't gone unnoticed.

Both still flagged and hopefully get cheaper by the time they're back. At ~5m you can stomach the odd rotation, especially when you have Wardinho and Chester as your sensational backup. 😉

Chiriches? We don't know. I read a Romanian report that seemed to suggest GW18 but Google Translate was very iffy. Hopefully we'll get some info from AVB tomorrow.

Not sure about Nasty - City aren't very good defensively.

I got Chiriches for his goal - Yay! - but now he's injured - boo! - but also, crucially, so is Vertonghen so even when Chiriches is fit, he's not a great pick until Vert is also back.

But I do think, when everyone is fit, Walker - Vert - Chiriches - Rose is the first choice for AVB and will make a sensational defence.

As do I, started 4 in a row once he got his chance and then injured and next game they conceded 6 😆

Disagree on Nastasic/City personally (obviously given I posted the original comment) when they don't have to play Lescott/Garcia instead of Kompany/Nastasic they are still a solid side IMO.

    Roo,Aguero,Suarez

0.8 in the bank, 1FT for this week.

Keeping in mind the festive period right until the Jan WC, plz suggest what changes i could make to my team to improve the team.
IMO.. GK,DEF,MID all need rectification, but IDK what to start with. So confused, that im deciding to shelve the FT till next week.

Hmmm, remember that thing last season about Liverpool not having won against a team in the top 10.

Only won once this season against a team in the current top 10 (Man Utd 🙁 )

As the only person in world left without Suarez (who stupidly sold him in wildcard GW8) maybe there is hope over these next 4.
