World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Spain

The final team in our analysis of Group B is the defending champions, Spain. Vicente del Bosque’s men get their campaign underway with a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final against Holland on Friday June 13 at 8pm, before squaring up to Mexico five days later at 8pm and then facing the rank outsiders, Australia, on Monday June 23 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Spanish topped a five-team group including France, Finland, Georgia and Belarus after winning six and drawing two of their eight fixtures. Defensively-sound, they registered five clean sheets and conceded just three goals, though they were relatively unimpressive at the other end of the pitch – scoring just 14 times, they netted more than twice on just one occasion, with a 4-0 win over Belarus.

Most Starts Sergio Ramos (8), Xavi, Sergio Busquets (7), Andres Iniesta, Pedro, Alvaro Arbeloa (6), Iker Casillas, Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas (5)

Most Goals Pedro (4), Alvaro Negredo (3), Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba (2)

Most Assists Cesc Fabregas (3), David Silva, Pedro (2)

The Key Targets

Recent friendly matches suggest Del Bosque’s side are struggling to rediscover their rhythm ahead of next month’s tournament. A narrow 2-1 win over Equatorial Guinea was followed by defeat to South Africa before the Spaniards edged past Italy 1-0 in Diego Costa’s first appearance up front. Last year’s 3-0 Confederations Cup Final defeat at the hands of Brazil perhaps hinted that some of Del Bosque’s ageing squad could struggle in the conditions but the manager is likely to stay true to his tried and trusted regulars.

At the back, Spain don’t have their problems to seek. Iker Casillas played just two league games for Real Madrid all season and has had to rely on cup competitions for minutes – he is available for 6.2 inFantasyiTeam. Alvaro Arbeloa is now retired, with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta likely to take over the right-back berth, whilst Barcelona pair Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba (both priced at 6.4 in FantasyiTeam) have been blighted by injury and made just 26 and 14 starts in La Liga last season respectively. Azpilicueta should benefit from a lower price across the Fantasy games and is available for 5.9 inFantasyiTeam, though Alba, along with Sergio Ramos, netted twice during the qualifiers and carries a real threat down the left. Ramos arrives in fine form, having scored six times for Real Madrid this season, and costs 6.3 of your FantasyiTeam budget.

In the centre, Sergio Busquets offers little in the way of going forward and his appeal is limited to those games which reward defensive contributions. Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Alonso will surely continue as mainstays in Del Bosque’s XI; the former two are similarly-priced in FantasyiTeam at 7.4 and 7.6 respectively, with the Real Madrid man setting you back 6.0. Up top, Diego Costa – providing he can fully recover from a hamstring complaint – is the in-form forward at Spain’s disposal, having notched 27 times in La Liga for Atletico Madrid; his recent form is reflected in his price, though, with Costa setting you back 9.9 in FantasyiTeam.

The Long Shots

Top scorer in qualification with four goals and a pair of assists, Pedro started all but one of the last seven group games. The Barcelona star notched 15 times in the recent league campaign and could remain under the radar as many opt for Costa instead – certainly, he’s kinder on the budget at 8.7 in FantasyiTeam.

Both Cesc Fabregas and David Silva (7.2 and 7.5 in FantasyiTeam) started five of the qualifiers and produced three and two assists respectively. Neither are nailed-on in the first XI, though there’s every chance the former could operate as a “false nine” if Costa’s injury problems re-surface – the City man looks more of a punt but could still prove a canny acquisition off the bench if Del Bosque’s team are struggling to break down opponents.

For those Utd fans looking for a heads up on lvg thinking and the kind of players he likes in each position have a look at the link below. For me it looks good for Carrick and mata/kagawa and not so good for Rooney (for no 10 he likes an attack minded midfielder rather than a forward)

RVP is his captain for the national team, after taking it from Sneijder. The whole reasoning for that was his captain always plays. The captaincy decision for United will be important.

Why wouldn't you punt a tenner on England at 100/1? Sure, they are unlikely to win it but the odds no way reflect their realistic chances. A young team with none of the usual hype and pressure could easily surprise a few people. Unfortunately I already have an account otherwise I'd be in 😉

Wouldn't be my strongest no 😳 but if you are basing your chances on "any given day England can beat anyone in the competition" the same goes for Ireland but Irish people are not gullible enough to think that when we qualify for a tourney that we can win it.

If England get to the semi's it will be an unbelieveable result and don't think I'm saying this because I want England to fail as I will be supporting them as the team of players I know best.

      Spent force!?

They might not be quite as favoured as in recent international tournaments but they still have the best squad of players in the tournament (along with some superstars not even in the 30).

Xavi and Xabi Alonso might be getting on a bit but they're still top quality and the rest of the side isn't that old. Similar squad to the Euros, with the addition of a quality striker in Costa.

In Fantasy terms, Alba and/or Ramos, whoever starts on the right and maybe Costa, with Iniesta a pick in the knockouts.

Spain aren't what they were but they are in no way a spent force. I'll be getting as many Spanish defenders as the rules allow. The quintuple Spanish defence plus captain worked a treat in the Euros.

Spain are in no way a spent force and i haven't seen any evidence that suggests they are? Fantasy wise however, i think their goals and assists are too spread out among their forwards and mids with no one particular player standing out as a valuable candidate. Even if they beat Australia 5-0 those goals are likely to come from different players.

Spanish defence is always worth investing in, even though they are pricey.

Not a spent force but certainly not in their prime anymore, just like Barcelona.

3-0 loss to Brazil (Confederations) and 1-0 loss to South Africa (friendly) with more or less full team has raised questions of their consistency I reckon.

Personally I think we'll see more or less a similar performance to the last WC from Spain. Grinding out 1-0 results against opponents of all qualities. Can't see them or a European team winning it myself in the South American climate. I think it'll be very intense for the likes of Germany and Spain, but Spain's quick style of play might give them an edge at stages.

Agree, 3/5/2 or 4/5/1 are usually the most popular formations at the start of a season/tournament. Then as your team value builds up, most end up playing 3/4/3.

Makes perfect sense. But I do remember a lot of our managers having a right result using their transfers to rotate Spanish and Italian defenders in the Euro's. So many viable tactics... but for me it's more fun to have more attacking players in each round, relying on clean sheets all the time is far too stressful.

Only a little... I've always stated that our game will not be to everyone's tastes, and if you really want to compete for the overall prizes you'll most likely need a spend roughly 3 quid. We just don't want to force our social and less hardcore users to spend money, hence the free to play option.

I understand the business model. What you want is for those who didn't consider spending money but are doing well, to then decide to spend money as they think they are in with a chance 😉

So then you have money from those who planned to pay and from a percentage of others who had no such plan.

Yes and no. As long as we have can make enough to keep the game running, we're more than happy.

We started out with an idea to build an app that we thought would be fun and a little different than the other Fantasy Football games on offer. Back in 2010 the app was free to play with no prizes. The season after we introduced small prizes and charged a one off payment to play the game. As the app has grown, prizes have got bigger, things like support, servers and staffing costs have increased, and additional transfers were introduce to compensate.

We don't know exactly what the future holds, but our main aim is to make the game appeal to as many people as possible and the ultimate aim is to make it a level playing field for everyone. And we're working hard to achieve both. Obviously, this doesn't mean anything for anyone interested in playing the World Cup version, so sorry for rabbiting on.

Yeah that put me off massively. Have to decide if I pay and play, or just pass.

Again, a very valid point. I've already touched on this in a post above. There are currently thousands of users that have played our game for more than 2 years and still haven't spent a penny. Giving people the option of playing the game for free just seems the right way to go about it, forcing out all our free to play players just doesn't sit right.

But for any very competitive Fantasy Football manager you're right, it's either pay to play or don't play at all.

Briefly read this macdonalds rules , leads me to a few of questions

So we are all going max defence , 5 at the back ?

Consisting of full backs ...or centre backs or full backs for recovered balls ?

And seen a couple of post saying ' if the rules stay the same ' . Is just wishful thinking because the rules look a bit silly or is there a chance they will actually change ?

...also 'unlimited ' transfers most windows' ...really ???

I'm not sure about that, 3 transfers per round means 14 players per round(if you transfer players out after they play) plus maybe an extra 2/3 for the DGW.

Means you can probably get about 45 games out of your side. I'm currently aiming to get about 41, but a majority of my transfers being spent on premium players like Messi, Ronaldo etc.

People should read the rules correctly for this fantasy I-team game. You can have 3 mexicans and 3 brazilians and use gameweek 1 and 2 transfers to get them out and youll still field 11 in gameweek 2. Not very clever but its possible. Theres a lot of strategy to this game a lnd swopping brazilian to rusdian players isnt the smartest moves with your gameweek 1 transfers for all of them. This game is all about strategy and using transfers to make your own double gameweeks with teams.

It can take a little time for anyone playing the the game for the first time to get their head round it all. If you are giving it a try, keep an eye on the in-app newsfeed. We'll be posting numerous game guides the week before kick off, the most important guide is the one that fully explains the transfer system. Once you do get your head around it, it's pretty cool if you like a lot of interaction.
