The Community Round Up

Last week’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game caused a wave of excitement as our community competed for low user IDs, discovered player prices and quickly set up their first draft teams. As you’d expect, we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of community articles and hot topics generated by the new game, while many FPL managers have also set up new leagues for the season ahead- read on to discover how to join up:

The Community Articles

With the paint barely dry on the first draft teams to emerge from the FPL launch, community writer Christina was already considering radical changes in his assessment of the best time to wildcard.

Getting the best of the new crop of players is key every year and The Puntmaster has been compiling another handy pre-season spreadsheet to assess the newcomers’ prospects. You can read his guide (which is updated as and when new players are signed) and grab the link to the spreadsheet here.

Amongst the most talked about new players is Southampton’s new winger and set-piece specialist Dusan Tadic, who joins on the back of 16 goals and 14 assists for FC Twente. Bowstring the Trout was on hand to run the rule over his prospects and assess how he will fit into the south coast side’s 2014/15 set-up.

Need to read up on Burnley’s prospects for the season ahead? Clarets fan Saint Steve-O offered this analysis of the Lancashire side’s squad, looking at Sean Dyche’s potential line up and tactics upon their return to the top-flight.

The release of the FPL game affords Fantasy managers a better idea of the budget options in defence, allowing us to assess the best cut-price partnerships for the season ahead. Lanley Staural’s rotation analysis warns against basing decisions mainly on home and away fixtures, though – his alternative view on rotation urges Fantasy mangers to look closely at the quality of the opposition rather than where the game is played.

Hottest Topics

When the FPL game began updating on Wednesday morning ahead of its mid-afternoon launch, our community members had some tough decisions on their hands.

Giggs Boson ignored a fire alarm at work, Epicfail put off the call of nature due to limited Wi-Fi access in his smallest room and Grim Reaper refused to answer the phone at work.

Another reason for logging into FPL swiftly after launch was to grab a low user ID. The Missing Link offered key tips on how to achieve this and, following the launch, it was clear many had listened- HeyDudes13 nabbed the impressively low ID of 12.

Rate My Teams for the FPL game have been posted thick and fast over the last few days and prompted some excellent discussions on formation and player selection. This includes Arsenal’s Number 19 Santi Cazorla’s look at the wealth of options in the Arsenal Midfield, as Fantasy managers weigh up the Gunners’ options in the centre of the park.

For Lionel’s Messi Boxers, Stoke midfield duo of Peter Odemwingie and Marko Arnautovic presents managers with another important choice to make when tapping into the Potters’ kind early fixtures.

Elsewhere, for those new to the site, Innsie’s guide on posting the perfect RMT and asking for help will be essential reading.

Among the key changes in 2014/15 in all Fantasy games is the wealth of credible new options in attack, with Chelsea and Arsenal among those to significantly strengthen in this area. Granville predicts that many FPL teams in particular will be flooded with new players.

As well as the launch of FPL, the Premier League also rolled out its Ultimate Fantasy Premier League game, which requires more hands on management during each Gameweek. Analysing the fixture list and assessing which players can be swapped in on Sundays and Mondays is crucial to success, according to Tommy Tour’s excellent guide to the UFPL Sunday and Monday clubs.

Our resident Sky Sports Fantasy game expert D1sable was also on hand to offer his pearls of wisdom on how to succeed.

Whichever Fantasy game you are playing, clean sheets, assists and goals remain key. In our discussion on which players and teams will gain the most points from these key attributes, Siva Mohan predicts Cesc Fabregas will be the top assister, while Captain Jack and Billy Gilmore were among those who see another prolific season for Daniel Sturridge. Chelsea was the popular choice in terms of most clean sheets, although The Missing Yobo believes Tottenham could be in the running for that accolade after new boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 shut-outs last time around.

Finally, MJ6987’s hot topic, which asked the community to vote on costly FPL picks against cheaper alternatives from the same teams was a popular shout. The Eden Hazard v Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez v Aaron Ramsey and Robin van Persie v Wayne Rooney debates were amongst the subjects up for discussion, with some intriguing results polled.

The Community Tournaments

Already a raft of community leagues have been created in the FPL game. Blue Lion has set up his “So You think You are Smarter Than a Casual” league (429-5287), while Messimerized has two leagues in FPL, his self-titled open to all league (26-630) and his Official Deadzone League (26-631), for those who visit Fantasy Football Scout overnight. Deadzoners are also invited to enter Innsie’s H2H Graveyard Shift league (10934-12169).

For those Fantasy managers that like to take a risk with their transfers Arvin-ation has set up a FFS Punters league (37064-16263).

The elite Fantasy managers who have notched up at least one Top 1000 rank finish can once again join PDM’s Top 1000 League ANY Season (16542-5955). The last five winners of this prestigious league are Pocky, Gareth Rees, Tom Pearson, Evs and Loz Sutty.

Meanwhile, RoysCallerAnne’s FFS Old Farts Club league (2475 1316) is once again open to those in the community who are 35 years old or over.

People are already declaring Sanchez as a captaincy option when he's never played a game in the EPL?

He's a talented player in a talented team, but I find this a bit hasty.

    Rejigged my team abit:

Would love some thoughts from you folks!

    Begovic - Myhill
    Luis - Vermaelen(MUN) - Davies - Wisdom - Mariappa
    Hazard - Arnie - Sanchez - Eriksen - Wanyama
    RvP - Dzeko - Jellie
    0 in the bank.

    My personal thoughts:

GK: Begovic or DDG? I'm assuming Vermaelen goes to MUN so I get a cheaper option in defense for MUN coverage.

DEF: Azpi is nailed on? Or should I be putting Luis in? Other than that, I'm basically going for the cheapest options available to get CHE - TOT - MUN coverage for the initial games.

MID: Sanchez or Ramsey? Tough to answer, don't have the answer. Hazard or Fabregas? That one is abit easier. Leaning on Hazard because on pens, plus more attacking and we aren't sure of Mou's plans for Fabregas. Is Arnie the right mid price mid? Or should I be going for De Jong?

FWD: RvP or Rooney? Tough one. Leaning to RvP because LVG seems to dislike Rooney. Dzeko should be nailed on now and is Jellie the best option at 6.0?

GK: If Verm goes to MUN then go for Begovic

DEF: Splash the extra .5 for Cahill, who's more nailed on than the two of those

MID: Pure instinct between Sanchez and Ramsey imo. Watch them over preseason. Also, Hazard. Arnie's got some easy fixtures early on but de Jong wouldn't be a bad pick if you have the extra .5

FWD: I like Jellie. Staying away from the RvP Rooney debate, though

Luis is arguably more 'nailed' than Cahill. They've just spent a fare wack on him and he's a natural left back. Their other is Bertrand. Cahill though likely to play, could drop out for Terry, Ivan or even Zouma at some point.

I like it overall - my main concern would be Remy's minutes. He was in my draft but they have such a wealth of attacking options he might not start v Southampton.

Shelvey's in my current draft but if they sign Sigurdsson he's a lot less attractive - wait and see on that.

Thanks for the feedback. No 4.5 midfielders worth having in my opinion, wouldn't touch Albrighton with a barge-pole. As for Wickham fair enough but who would be the best 7.0 or less striking option? Only thing I can think of is Arnie > Siggy then Wickham > Pelle but I'm really backing Arnie this campaign.

Where do you go from Wickham with 7 mil to spend on another forward? Not too many options that really standout there. And, Wickham ain't nuthin' to dismiss, exactly. 5 goals 2 assists in just 847 minutes. Pretty tidy returns there. If you really want to get rid of him for someone else, I'd maybe downgrade Cameron to a 4.0 defender if there is any decent option there (not so sure) and then you would have 7.5 to spend on a forward, which goes a lot further than 7.0.

Agree with this re: Wickham. He's young, English, and finished last season superbly. See no reason why he isn't nailed on despite some saying he isn't. Best of the 7m- pool.

Seems like a lot of the key decisions have already been crystallised:

Keeper. Do you go with Krul/Mannone or DDG/non-player which are the two most popular options. There are shouts for Begovic and for just a £4.5 and a non player (that seems a false economy to me when you can get an incredibly good rotation for £9m). I imagine if Mourinho makes his No 1 abundantly clear that will get a late bandwagon - if it's unclear by GW1 that's a complete no go.

Defence. Do you get Debuchy despite the tough fixtures. If you don't have DDG then you probably need to decide on a United defender but that's not the easiest call.
Pick your early-season rotation with fixtures being particularly friendly to Stoke and Southampton and there is a lot of confidence in Palace meaning people will go for Chambers/Cameron/Mariappa or play it safe for £0.5m with Clyne/Huth/Ward. Are great Hull fixtures worth it for when their form will collapse during Europa.
Decide which Chelsea defender you are getting which is a slightly tricky one as 5 into 4 doesn't go and then you're pretty much there.

    Midfield
Sanchez and Fabregas or Hazard and Ramsey. Obviously many variations but few will have none of these four in their team. Mata and Silva always popular - the former surely only because of fixtures. Then it's about clever selection of mid and lower prices options, and Eriksen sitting in between. Choosing between Stoke midfielders will be interesting for many and Sigurdsson is bound to get a bandwagon soon. Then it's a case of choosing your cheap ones either for threat like JWP or going less interesting but hoping you get a guaranteed 2 points off your bench when you need it.
Interesting how little interest there is in Toure, obviously huge price but if the guy bangs in a hat trick at St James' Park...

    Forward
Big - Medium - Small seems more popular than ever before on here. Too much up in the air here with transfers and Dzeko will be a huge talking point in pre-season. Rooney is so tempting then you think back to that high five and feel that RVP is going to be the mainstay at United.

What's interesting is the teams who are being almost completely ignored. West Ham has barely any interest, mainly due to pricing, few people are picking City players and there's a lot of uncertainty in lineups.

The hardest trick with FFS is to pick between the bandwagons you'd be an idiot to ignore, and those that are genuinely bonkers....

No definitely not - can see them both starting it's just every time my finger hovers over Rooney to free up that previous extra £££ I just feel as though he's going to end up in a withdrawn role or somehow shoe-horned into a position that LVG feels best accommodates RVP.

Yes I think that's largely due to some uncertainty as to who will start, Europa, some overpricing and a very poor early run of fixtures. Baines will become an option after a few GWs I'd have thought.

I've got some ideas on how to improve but want to see if others think here's my team
    Krul Manonne
    Cahill Vermaelen Davies (targett,wisdom)
    Sanchez Hazard Shelvey Tadic (marney)
    Rooeny Diego Costa Pelle

I'm going to be keeping tabs on Jovetic. Was never fully fit last season and could be extremely good value if he gets going.

    Currently looking at:

    Schmeichel/Krul
    Vermaelen(MUN)/Davies(TOT)/Flanagan/Coloccini/Bruce
    Barkley/Ozil/Hazard/Eriksen/Albrighton
    RVP/Costa/Jelavic

Think Jelavic will enjoy the delivery from Snodgrass, keeping tabs on the Siggy move which could free up some budget to boost my defence.

Everyone appears to be obsessed with Chelsea. Looking into the average player rating (according to whoscored.com) they have the hardest start to the season.

    http://www.whoscored.com/Articles/bruwym90ak2eto7pkz2wgq/Show/League-Focus-201415-Premier-League-Opening-Fixtures-Analysed

Nevertheless I have 6 million o spend on a defender (much to my dislike) so whilst Luis is a guaranteed starter, being the only natural LB, is Azpil's prem experience likely to oust Ivanovic?

They took an average. Still though, even by our season ticker Chelsea is in the bottom half. For such expensive assets, is it really worth it?

They didn't use the promoted teams though. And Chelsea are 8th highest in our ticker for the first 6 games.

Expensive Chelsea defenders will be worth it.

We're in for Alberto Moreno but their chairman seems difficult, by the looks of it we keep on faking walk outs and then returning back to the negotiating table, latest rumour suggests their chairman wants to hold onto the left back until they play their cup game in the second week of August.

I think we'll end up signing him but I'd much prefer someone like Ricardo Rodriguez.

      No. They'll line up:

      Moreno - Sakho - Lovren - Johnson

The biggest risk there is Johnson who will be on a free next summer and will only stay if he takes a pay cut on his 110k per week wages.

Skrtl could play in a back 3
