The Community Round Up

There was panic among the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as pre-season bandwagons de-railed and the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price changes became even more difficult to predict. We look back on the reaction to these events, along with some of the week’s top contributions, including some further number-crunching from our community contributors. Elsewhere, we catch up on the latest custom statistics tables created by our members and the runners and riders in the various community tournaments.

The Community Articles

With two weeks’ worth of statistics at their disposal, our community writers felt confident enough to wave goodbye to some early-season punts and follow some new leads.

Stoke City’s mercurial forward Bojan Krkic started the season surrounded by plenty of hype following an impressive pre-season, earning him a handsome ownership level. Sadly, he’s struggled to come to terms with expectations and has failed to make an impression for Mark Hughes’ men, disappointing an army of Fantasy managers. Aussie Pundit was amongst them, leading him to create this article offering an in-depth analysis of the Spaniard and the Fantasy conundrum he’s posed.

The Puntmaster was on hand to offer an immediate solution to Bojan issue – he urged us to take a closer look at West Ham’s Mauro Zarate as a tailor-made replacement as part of three punts going into Gameweek 3 – the latest instalment of his excellent regular article.

Elsewhere, Arvination was another to highlight the talents of Zarate, although the focus of his his round-up of the weekend’s best punts was most definitely Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

As ever, our number-crunching experts have been busily generating new theories with the data at their disposal. Red Lightning has been looking in detail at the measurement of points per 90 minutes, while Rab Mac brought us news of a team and player spreadsheet he’s developed to help Fantasy managers get to grips with the latest statistics.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

There was widespread panic amongst Fantasy managers this week with the realisation that the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seemed to have tweaked the values that govern the player price changes – leading to some expected results. With less information available and seemingly fewer price falls taking place, Dr Funk wondered whether casual managers will benefit at the expense of veteran managers who have based their strategies on monitoring movement in the market.

That unwelcome development has compounded an uncertain opening to the campaign, with a wide array of options and no cast-iron captaincy contender on offer. AA7’s Hot Topic captured the issue perfectly, as he underlined the bewildering amount choice available, particularly in the key attacking roles.

With panic setting in, it’s far too easy to make rash decisions and, with that in mind, Harrysponge invited the community to look back at the best and worst 11th-hour alterations from the opening weekend of the season.

Talking of rash decisions, last week we witnessed Berbinho’s Forehead and Rayne Wooney’s foolhardy and unpleasant pair of pledges should Liverpool complete the signing of a certain Mario Balotelli. This week it was John Barnes’ turn to make a promise he’d regret: he was so keen to see Stevan Jovetic score a brace last week that he swore to captain the Manchester City striker every week for the rest of the season if he could achieve that feat. The Montenegrin duly delivered against Liverpool, leaving John Barnes banking on a few more braces as the season progresses.

There’s nothing like a trip down memory lane to calm the nerves and anxiety and, fortunately, Leicester’s unlikely signing of Esteban Cambiasso offered us the opportunity for nostalgia as we looked back on other legends who have arrived in the Premier League in their twilight years.

There was further serenity among UFPL managers who are busily completing their Transfer Window selection. A timely contribution from Goonerbyron provided an invaluable list of the teams playing on Matchdays 2 and 3 for those still tinkering those long-term plans.

The Members Tables

Over in the members area, Jesus Navas My Lord has been taking an in-depth look at the underlying stats of attacking full-backs, a group that is thought to be favoured by a change in the Fantasy Premier League bonus calculations this summer. His Bertrand v Clyne table focuses on final third touches among this group, while he has also cast his gaze on the attacking threat of Chelsea’s defenders.

Arvin-ation has been another prolific table builder this week, looking at a comparison between Dzeko and Jovetic, Bojan Krkic replacements and Gameweek 2’s most attacking players in defence and higher up the pitch.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how these work.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic‘s”Last Man Standing” competition, Chrissy Waddle’s 85 was the top score in Gameweek 2, where 102 teams were eliminated, leaving 1502 to progress.

”The Dead Team Challenge”, in which managers selected a team and captaincy in Gameweek 1 that has to remain in place until the end of the season, saw Medo_Je climb to the top of the leaderboard after Gameweek 2’s matches. He scored 142 points in the first two Gameweeks of the competition that has been organised by Zep.

Elsewhere, Kalmoffit won the Gameweek 2 “Scout Picks Challenge”, the competition organised by @ofcprodigy that is loosely based on our Scout Picks. Overall in the competition Lionel’s Messy Boxers and IniestaFiesta are joint top.

In AZ’s “Early Bird FFS Cup” the group leaders ahead of Gameweek 3 were Doosra, Pundit of Punts, Baines on Toast, AZ, Acquafresca, Costa – The Chosen One, cmonster and NTFM.

With the international break, our search for a Gameweek 4 community champion will start on Monday 8 September. Watch out for a hot topic that day when we will be asking for nominations and votes for those wishing to follow Tom Fenley, HVT and Innsie as your champion.

Not much i'd change, maybe Jovetic to a striker of your choice, Hutton to Moore purely based on future fixtures, similar with Marney to Albrighton

This will sound stupid but can someone please explain the WC to me? Can you make unlimited trades through the international break? or is it just the one 'confirm team'?

I lost a game in my mini league which was a bit bs, so im angry with my team.

    Take a look: http://imgur.com/QPCq8cb (I captained Jovetic...)

Unlimited transfers the entire international break. Good time to wildcard.

This. Best time to play price rises - although it's difficult to guess them these days. Plus could use it to replace injured players on int duty. But I won't use it since my team doesn't need major rehaul.

And when you say good for price rises, do you mean for example: make up to 25 trades over the two weeks, then on the last day pick the team you would actually like?

          1. Galfadez
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 9 months ago

Yep that's it. Although this year it's not a big a weapon because price rises aren't happening as much. It's almost about being able to avoid drops and get players back cheaper (Rooney for me)

  4. Miracallas
    • 12 Years
    9 years, 9 months ago

How much is a wildcard worth?

It depends how you use it. It might be to sort out an injury/suspension problem. If that's the case, there are few things that a -12 can't fix, maybe a -16 at most.

Another time would be around a DGW. Last year, it worked out that (without hits), you could have 6 players in GWxx if you had 11 players in the following DGW. So that's 5 players difference. Assuming they average 5ppg (quite generous), that's 25pts

I'm going to use mine now, to save a 12pt hit, and to build some team value. I'll get 0.7m extra (0.5 in TV and 0.2 ITB).

That might not sound like much because the players values are changing more slowly this year. But, if that's the case, then it doesn't matter, because the players will cost less when you buy them, so you will actually need less money. It will only the relative value of the team that matters

    That might not sound

good post...but you can get away with a low TV

last year I started badly and then got an annoyingly long run of defensive injuries...the result of this was that my TV was low at Christmas and I just couldn't afford Aguero when "everybody" seemed to be getting him

      so what to do?

after much agonising I got Jay Rodriguez instead of Aguero which gave me £6.0m to spend elsewhere...so I often had an extra Chelsea or Arsenal defender for example as well as cash left over elsewhere

the results of this were inconclusive because Aguero got injured (thankfully)...lots of people got Adebayor at the time...and Rodriguez wasn't brilliant but he wasn't too bad compared to the more expensive strikers I could have had

I didn't have a stellar season but I did OK

Silver Linings Playbook is pretty good recent one. 50/50 was pretty solid. If you want something a little bit less mainstream you could check out Lars and the Real Girl. I'm sure that you've probably seen Searching for Eric...if not, watch that immediately. Generally anything by Wes Anderson (Rushmore, etc.). A Serious Man by the Coen Brothers is solid as well.

            That's at least a start...

            Submarine
            The Double
Wes Anderson films are also really good imo.

Thinking if I should do the same, rectify my error of selling Costa. Too short term minded I was.

People here thinking Costa could rise? Rooney value should still hold I think with those fixtures, but players are struggling in adapting to a new system and with new faces too.

A Costa rise is imminent. A Rooney fall seems a little bit further off, but still on the horizon and the swing of prices is what is driving to a degree the exodus from Rooney to Costa as a straight swap (despite Rooney's fixtures...which is what I am worried about).

        Begovic;
        Terry, Jones, Wisdom;
        Hazard, Ramsey, Mata, Sigurdsson;
        Rooney, Agüero, Naismith.

        Hamer; Albrighton, Ferdinand, Hutton.

        1FT; £0.4m.

Lack of Sterling/Diego Costa sticks out like a sore thumb and really knocked my rank, Mata to Sterling looks like the obvious move but I feel like I need to get in Diego Costa too, but I'm unwilling to remove either Rooney or Agüero for a hit.

Why would I want to lose Agüero and get Henderson?

If you don't want to lose Rooney and Aguero then you have got to lose Naismith for Costa which is a 5.2m upgrade.

Can't really see where you can generate that much cash without taking multiple hits.. Ride it out without Costa I think.

Seems like the best thing to do but Rooney to Diego Costa is ever so tempting I doubt I'll be able to control myself, even for a hit 😆

Agüero probably better for returns thou uncertain over minutes.

Although Rooney get the minutes and does nothing.

You need to lose one of those boys really because of the structure of your team. And if its this week it'll be a hit.

You're mental to sell Mata. It's all over this site like a bad rach. Same as getting in Jovetic this week.

FFS is brilliant in some respects, but when it comes to jerky- jerkiness , I'd prefer to be a casual tbh.

Mata will score points in the next 2 games, im pretty sure about that

Have you been watching Man U play? Mata has been average (I held him for first 3 weeks) in a team that looks disjointed and lacking confidence in each other. I am sure there are 10 better prospects for 8.9 and below at this stage of the season.

Ah yes, it was cramp. He looked very poor none the less and Di María's arrival won't help matters IMO, plus Sterling was great today and was unlucky to come away with just 6 points, with Liverpool's fixtures he can only get better.

It's certainly a good w/c squad but you must have either Fab or Hazard in there.

there's numerous changes I would do on your current team, Kolarov, Debuchy Ade, Tadic out. Costa Fab/Haz and more budget defs. (Taylor PVA Coloc) in.

It really depends if you want a quick fix or slow and gradual. It's up to you in the end.

It seems odd that United are preparing to send Welbeck and Hernandez out on loan, especially with rumours of RVP needing knee surgury.

Could United be paving the way for a new striker? It looks like they are.

But if we sign a new CB he can play as a RB. Young isn't the best I agree, but that still leaves 4 other options not to mention youngsters in case of injuries.

Yeah, I think LVG would have preferred such rumours to surface after the transfer window though, but yeah the international break is another reason.

The metro and a few other dodgy papers are telling the story too. As I said, its just rumours.

i dont think so.. think welbeck will stay.. and with hernandez leaving young james wilson will see some action..

if however welbeck does leave and these rumours of rvp needing surgery are true then we would have to bring in another forward

It would make sense for LVG to keep the RVP rumours quiet till after the transfer window. That way United won't be exploited as easily.

Zaha performed very well under Neil Warnock in the Championship. I am looking at him or JWP to replace Mata

JWP but I would wait until after the transfer window closes to see if soton find a replacement

Does Punchy at 5.9 or Larsson at 5.6 fit your budget?

Who's the best 5.0 attacking fullback?

                      A. Janmaat
                      B. Pieters
                      C. Rose
                      D. Monreal

Yes, C and D are rotation worries, but still. Clyne is now 5.1 and is obviously the best option.

Bertrand can be a good shout, the stats actually suggest that he should outscore Clyne.
That is from a guy who just bought Bertrand to see Clyne rack up an assist point.

                      A. Which player that should be transferred out for Diego Costa? Aguero or Rooney?
                      B. Is it essential to have Alexis Sanchez? If yes, which player that should be sacrificed? Fabregas or Ramsey?

So gents. I screwed up major this week and did Costa + Austin (Both of whom scored) ➡ Adebayor + Jovetic

Obviously I need to get Costa back. The only ways are:

                      (A) Rooney ➡ Costa (FREE)

                      (B) Jovetic, Mata, Jones ➡ Costa, Sterling, Moore (-8)

                      Help 🙁
