The Community Round Up

Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Meanwhile, to take part in discussion on another team-based competition, the FFS UEFA group’s Hockey World Cup, please visit their dedicated competition article here.

    Current midfield...

    Ramsey, Mata, Fabregas, Siggy.

    Would you sell Mata?

    If so, for who?

    Thanks

He is on a goalscoring run currently and is flying under the radar. Only if he didn't have doubts over his role in team with Falcao coming in, he is a real bargain.

Did you watch the match? Mata was excellent, and utd played much better before his substitution. RVP looked very poor, he will be the one that makes way for Falcao. Looking at your team i would say either save transfer or look at changing a defender

The Ramsey/Welbeck is the only issue I have. But Im more referring to myself.

            Maybe ADM->Ramsey in week 8?

              Mmm possibly.

For some reason I'm going off Pelle, and Welbeck looks good, so that's what's currently leaning me towards ADM over Ramsey. Don't want to double up on ARS with their next few fixtures.

                I was suggesting no arsenal.

Pelle over Welbeck and ADm over Ramsey. When Walcott is back/Ars fixt pick up then ADM->walcott or ramsey

              I dunno.

              I want to dump Rio/Wisdom/Terry/Marney/Dzeko/Krul/Haz

              Reason being:

              Rio/Wisdom - really shit defence
Terry - Chel not keeping CS/won't this week neither
              Dzeko-up vs Chel/limited gametime
              Haz-Cesc doing ths business

I know they are all valid points but it's very valuable holding on to a WC unless it's desperately needed. Think I might hold out on mine a little longer.

I'm on 57 points this week with Chester to come, it's not all bad!!

wanted to ask an arsenal fan about this. while ramsey has been getting the points he has been pretty average when i've watched him. so many mistakes and a lot of pot shots when he can just pass the ball etc .. him in the hole leads to ozil wasted on the wing too

it's actually a 4-1-4-1. arteta shielding with ramsey and jack as box to box mids

ozil out wide makes me cringe everytime. he plays that position for germany but its a waste of his talent.

rambo has been pretty poor tbf, despite grabbing the fantasy points. jack has been miles better than him all season.

I know it's a bit too early but this is my team for next week -

    Krul
    Chester, Coloccini, PVA
    Hazard, Lamela, Ramsey, Sterling, Siggy
    Costa, Rooney

    Subs: Hamer, Naismith, Naylor, Moore

Got 2 FTs and £2.0m ITB

Not sure what to do with those FTs. Feels like all the players I would want to get in have worse fixtures than those I would get rid of.

Hazard has some great stats and I still have faith in him to convert those stats into points

    Krul (Foster)

    Clyne - Caulker - Terry - (Naylor - Wisdom)

    Ramsey - Hazard - Chadli - (Siggy) - Henderson

    Naismith - Rooney - Costa

    1FT, 2.6 ITB.

Do I transfer Haz -> Fab this week, and just follow my plan on getting Kun after a few weeks, or do I go total WC on my teams ass?

    All opinions appreciated.

Almost 1.5m in FPL but just outside top 100 in UFPL thanks largely to Di Maria(c) and slowly climbing. Wonderful format. Any other UFPL players in today? How you doing and have you managed to stick with it and hit the varioua deadlines?

Had a shocking start in UFPL, but have a mammoth 111 so far this week moving from 7.4k to 2k. Only Robertson tonight though.

    C. Keep Hazard and save FT

    GW6: Hazard/Sanchez & Bony/Ade -> Fabs & Costa (4 points)

    Ok, so.

    A) 343 with Sterling, Lamela, Siggy and fabregas with JWP on bench and Rooney, costa, welbeck

    or

    B) 352/343 with Sterling, Lamela, Ramsey,, Fabregas, Rooney, welbeck. Rotating siggy and naismith.

Hey folks... Got 2FT's but don't know what to do. Albrighton & Dummett seem to be my only concern at the moment.

    Krul (Elliot)
Clyne / Hutton / PvA (Wisdom / Dummett)
Cesc / Ramsey / Sig / Sterling (Albrighton)
    Aguero / Costa / Rooney

    Bank = 0.1

    A) Dummett > Duff (play him over PvA)
    B) Albrighton > Boyd
    C) A&B

I'm still furious I captained Balotelli ... hasn't looked good, new team, still not on the score-sheet playing a defence that has been pretty solid ... can't blame anyone but myself.

Damn stupid Head vs Heart ... I'll never learn!

I guess that's why the winner each year is likely an accountant who never watches a game of football and just crunches the numbers and laws of probability.

It's THE most frustrating aspect of the game when you pick the wrong captain ... even moreso when someone you own and know is reliable scores a hat-trick! To think i went to bed Sunday night confident Balotelli would at least score a goal and get an assist and some BAPs.

        He's my new nemesis!

Thinking of wc, any thought yay or nay?
    Krul Foster
    Yoshida Terry Bartley Davies Caulker
    Hazard Eriksen Sterling Ramsey Siggy
    Jovetic Costa Naismith

Need to get rid of Terry, Yoshida, Harazrd and jovetic especially.
Could also take. minus 8? Any thoughts?

      I would pull the WC

      Yoshida > Clyne
      Terry > Moreno / Lovren
      Bartley > Taylor
      Caulker > Duff
      Eriksen > Boyd / ADM
      Hazard > Fabregas
      Jovetic > Aguero / Adebayor / Rooney
      Naismith > Welbeck / Pelle

      If you want a template!!

Seems like there are a multitude of great premium midfield options at the moment...
    Hazard
    Fabregas
    Sterling
    Di Maria
    Mata
    Ramsey
    Sanchez

May even be worth shipping Siggy and restructuring to get 4 of these in? Or is this FFS taboo?

Can't see why not. Great fixtures and has always been an FPL stud. Like Ramsey last season, why ditch unless he actually does stop scoring?

Bony and Gomis haven't played together, and most likely won't. Plus Rooney, Aguero, Costa look just as good as those midfielders and Sigurdsson looks better than Welbeck/Pelle IMO.
