Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Sigurdsson at the Double

Gylfi Sigurdsson bags a brace as Iceland see off Holland. Graziano Pelle nets on his debut for Italy. Edin Dzeko is in the goals for Bosnia. Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany recover from injury to start for Belgium but Nacer Chadli misses out with a hip problem.

SIGURDSSON’S ICELAND GOAL SPREE CONTINUES

Gylfi Sigurdsson added to his strike against Latvia on Friday by bagging a brace for Iceland in their shock 2-0 win over Holland in last night’s Euro qualifier. The Swansea midfielder opened the scoring with a spot-kick before adding the second just before half-time with a precise volley.

The Scout Says: With six goals and six assists in his last twelve appearances for club and country, it’s fair to say that Sigurdsson is looking as desirable now as he has done all season. The only qualm thus far has been his goal threat in a Swansea shirt, and his 45% ownership will now be hoping that the 6.8-priced midfielder can finally transfer his scoring form to the league – it’s still just one strike for the campaign for the Icelander, and that was back in Gameweek 1, with team-mates Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer both overshadowing him in that regard with two and three goals respectively.

PELLE AMONGST THE GOALS FOR ITALY

Graziano Pelle grabbed a debut goal for Italy in their 1-0 European Championship Qualifier victory over Malta last night.

The Scout Says: Whilst Gameweek 7 served up a rare blank for Pelle, last night’s strike could help re-ignite the form that saw him return points in each of the previous four Gameweeks. Withdrawn on 74 minutes after his side went down to 10 men, Pelle should be brimming with confidence when the Saints face Sunderland on Saturday afternoon. Following the Black Cats clash, Ronald Koeman’s men have four more enticing fixtures to look forward to (STK, hul, LEI, avl), and Pelle, at 7.9, is likely to continue to make a mockery of his mid-price valuation.

MIXED NEWS FOR CITY

Man City’s Edin Dzeko netted for Bosnia and Herzegovina last night as their Euro Qualifier with Belgium ended level pegging at 1-1. Vincent Kompany lined up against his team-mate for the Belgians after recovering from the knock sustained in his previous international outing, though Manuel Pellegrini now has worries over the services of fellow centre-back, Eliaquim Mangala, as the defender is a doubt for France’s next qualifier against Armenia this evening with a thigh problem.

The Scout Says: He may have only scored in just one of his last seven league appearances, but Dzeko still seems likely to start against Spurs this weekend, despite the fact that Stefan Jovetic is available after recovering from injury to feature as a sub for Montenegro. Another blank, however, and the Bosnian will begin to test the patience of both his manager and his 10% ownership, with Jovetic waiting in the wings to earn a recall to the starting XI. Meanwhile, at the back for City, Mangala’s injury concerns could allow Martin Demichelis a route back into Pellegrini’s back four alongside Kompany – with decent fixtures ahead for the Citizens (TOT whm, MUN, qpr, SWA), the Argentine could be set to profit if he can re-earn his spot.

HAZARD BACK FOR BELGIUM

Having missed out on his side’s drubbing of Andorra last week with a knock, Eden Hazard returned to Belgium’s starting line-up last night and played the full 90 minutes in the draw with Bosnia.

The Scout Says: Hazard’s run-out last night should ease worries ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday. Doubts over his fitness have kept investment relatively low up until now, with only 17,000 managers having brought him in so far this week despite his goal in Gameweek 7, but that number could be set to increase now his injury fears have subsided. Nonetheless, with an ownership at 13%, he continues to look a truly explosive differential option as Chelsea face up to three leaky defences in their next three fixtures (cry, mun, QPR).

Chadli Misses Out with Hip Problem

The Tottenham midfielder played no part in Belgium’s match last night after picking up a hip problem during the warm-up.

The Scout Says: With four goals and an assist in the first seven Gameweeks, Chadli has been a man transformed this season under Mauricio Pochettino. Sitting just four points off the top of the FPL midfield standing, he’s owned by a mere 11% of Fantasy managers, with over 57,000 drafting him in over the international break. Given that he’s set to travel to City this weekend, non-owners will be prepared to monitor the situation for now but with Newcastle, Villa, Stoke and Hull in the following four, he has the fixtures to challenge Sigurdsson at the summit. Should he miss out, Christian Eriksen has now served up two sets of double figures in the last four and has dropped to 7.8 – with a 7% ownership, he’s another player who could be set to prosper.

AMAT CLOSING IN ON RETURN

Swansea centre-back Jordi Amat is confident that he will recover from the knee injury he sustained against Chelsea midway through September in time for his side’s clash with Everton in Gameweek 10:

“I’m getting better every day and I’m feeling good. I was glad we had the international break because it means I’ve had more time to recover. I’m working hard each day with the staff here and hopefully I’ll be ready to play in around two weeks. I’m hoping to train during the week of the Leicester game with the aim of being in contention the following week.”

The Scout Says: Having started Swansea’s first four fixtures of the season and picked up consecutive clean sheets against Burnley and West Brom, Amat was looking great value for his 4.5 price tag before he succumbed to injury. His spell on the sidelines has given summer signing Federico Fernandez a route into Garry Monk’s first XI, and the two now look set to compete for a starting role alongside Ashley Williams in the heart of defence for the remainder of the season. Fantasy managers will certainly be backing Amat to win the contest, with the Spaniard coming in at 0.6 cheaper than Fernandez, though he may have his work cut out in reclaiming his starting role upon his return from injury – the Everton clash in Gameweek 10 is followed by the arrival of Arsenal at the Liberty before a trip to Man City in Gameweek 12.

WALCOTT RETURNS TO FULL TRAINING

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is back in full training as he reaches the final stages of recovery from the knee injury suffered back in January.

The Scout Says: With the Gunners’ injury list beginning to mount, Walcott’s long-awaited return will come as a great relief for Arsene Wenger. Fantasy managers should, however, be cautious about immediately racing for the England man’s services – after missing just seven league matches with injury early on in the 2013/14 campaign, Wenger then utilised him as a substitute on four successive occasions upon his return, playing a total of just 60 minutes across those fixtures. If that record is anything to go by, it may still be a while before we see the 9.0-priced Walcott in the Gunners’ starting XI this season, though it’s worth noting that Walcott still managed to pick up a pair of assists during that period, in spite of his limited pitch time.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

We have a Scout Pick community champion.

He may have been unlucky in Dr Who and the Genesis of the Daleks but in fantasy football votes he is a worthy winner. His poetic take on his picks has earned him victory and he will now represent the community in Gameweek 8's Scout Picks.

Davros – if you can email me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with your final picks plus 200 word explanation (happy to take bullet points if stretched for time) by 5pm Thursday that’d be great.

Feel free to email me before if you have any questions.

Cheers and good luck, but not too much obviously. 😉

Can we make it a prerequisite that this representative of our boardways has at least finished once inside the top 10k?

I just hate finishing second. Thank you kindly.

That's the plan, but you are free to vote based on any criteria you want. Its up to you how you vote. Ideally voting based on a team means you are voting for someone who you believe has the team selection ability to beat the scouts.

Ah shucks. Thanks Jonty, and for everyone who voted.

Whenever I think of this 'champion' concept, I can't help but think of GOT. The problem being that too often the Community Champion has ended up more like Oberyn than The Mountain. Hopefully that will change this week.

The selected team will, as promised, be a differential team with ownership less than 10%. I see the aim of the community team not only to compete against the scouts but also to guide punters in selecting their transfers, and having differentials allows you to put forward a more varied set of picks than you'd otherwise see.

As Jafalad and others have pointed out, I do not have as strong a pedigree as some on the forum. However, I don't think this is necessarily a guarantee of success on any one given week - many of the skills you need to finish in the top 10k at the end of the season aren't needed here after all such as planning transfers, looking at the long game, managing budgets etc.

What I do have is belief in the wisdom of the crowd, and I want to make the team representative of the community selection as a whole as much as possible. So, I have allowed some changes to my original team by developing an algorithm combined with some judgment calls to take into account votes for all the other teams posted - this means that everybody who voted has had an impact on the final team selection (and can therefore share in the accompanying glory/ blame).

Barring new injuries, team news etc, the resulting Community Pick team currently looks like:
      Adrian
      Azpi Bellerin Tomkins
      Tadic Mane Milner Oscar
      Cisse Falcao Sturridge

Jonty, I'll email you final team and reasoning closer to the deadline.

        Are you serious?
You're narrowing your selection field down so that you can't pick any players who are consistently performing well because they will have ownership of higher than 10%?
Your team is useless and you'll get crushed by picks like Costa, Welbeck, Pele, Baines, ADM, Sigg, Bertrand etc.
The whole concept of having random people pick teams to go against the scout picks just goes to show what poor choices most people make.

        1. Davros
          • 14 Years

          I'm deadly serious.
That was the policy platform I took to the election. That principle was what was voted for by the majority, and so if I changed away from that now I'd be at risk of being turfed out of office.

Honestly, the stick I'm getting for this is unreal bordering on personal. It is still a game isn't it?

Who's to say that this team won't finish higher than the players you mentioned. I actually think it's a pretty good team. Suggest you put a team forward next week if you disagree with the community vote.

There is absolutely nothing personal in my opinion of your team, or my opinion of people who actually voted for it. I'm just expressing my opinion that it's useless.
I read so much rubbish on here about picking low owned ' differential' players because having a team full of players like Costa and Siggy won't get you to the top and now you're picking a whole team of little owned players. They have less than 10% owners for a reason. You may get lucky with one or two but overall they will not do well. A team full of on form, high scoring players will crush the likes of Milner, Bellerin, Tomkins and Falcao.

I've never heard so much rubbish. This is a classic availability bias- just because you don't have them in your team you don't realise how good they are.
For instance, over the last 3 weeks:
Falcao has outscored all the strikers you mentioned
Tomkins has outscored all the defenders you mentioned
              Milner has outscored Sig.

The only player you mention that has outscored any player you dismissed (aside from belle run who hasn't played yet) out of hand is ADM. It's a concern, but the reason I have Falcao in for cover.

We clearly view this game differently...
Tomkins has conceded in every game except home to QPR and has scored 1 point in 4 out of 6 games.
Falcao has scored one goal for Man U so far and not played more than 72 minutes in a game.
Milner is not nailed on and his stats don't show him to be particularly productive.
You mention 'cover' in your response - another ridiculous concept, if ADM is better than get him in instead and play 352, he's cheaper so you can afford it.

I actually think that some of those Differentials this week are going to be popular in the Scout Picks. Certainly I'm looking at Tomkins, Tadic, Mane, Milner and Cisse. Going Falcao over ADM looks a risk now but, as Granville and I have just discussed in the ScoutCast...it might look the way to go after Monday night's game.

Thanks mark- hope you haven't just cursed these players though! 🙂
My feeling on ADM is that he has been luckier than most, whereas Falcoa has been unluckier than most. Hence the difference in ownership. Not everyone will agree with this, but whilst he's a fantastic player (and in my team) some of his points have had a degree of luck. Personally I'm working on strategy to get him into my team.
I am having some last minute nerves on Sturridge fitness now- concerned that he might be eased back from what I'm hearing, so considering a last minute shuffle around.

    New post, repost 😉

    What to do?

    DDG/Gilks
    Cahill/Duff/Chester/Clyne/Dummet
    ADM/Sterling/Siggy/Downing/Marney
    Pelle/Costa/Aguero

Save FT and do Chester + DDG -> Baines + Guzan next week? I could also do it for a hit this week
My concern is that I wouldn't be able to upgrade Downing in the near future.

    Thanks.

I thought you couldn't use the original one after the Jan one? I think you have to use it between now and Jan?

You can use it whenever you want. If you use one in Jan it will just use your Jan WC.

Yes, being a gardener by trade we have a few old wives sayings. The one this year was oak before ash we are in for a splash and low and behold we had a really nice dry late summer. Also now noticing the amount of berries on the trees I would say we are in for a hard winter at some-point. So keeping the wild-card powder dry!!!

Am I ok to save transfer this week?

    Bego ( Gilks)

    Naylor Clyne Duff (Caulker) (Wisdom)

    ADM Fab Sterling Siggy (Marney)

Defence is ordinary should i do Caulker to anyone this week or hold and swap for chambers next week?

    Everyone rushing to get Baines…

Is it really worth ditching Sterling (massive goal threat) or Fabregas (will get most assists this season) to get a defender who in all likelihood will get very few clean sheets? If it ain't broken, don't fix it

    1. Gunner HitIT

Absoultely spot on, would have fab and sterling both in anytime than having A defender who may just win 2 out of 10 times

haha u can wait and see then. risk and reward..its how this game goes right? take the risk u may be rewarded

if u fail u can always get back fab/sterling again..just a little team value lost which could potentially be recovered with the rising price of ur midfield replacement and baines.

Not worth it. If people have Ivan, they should swap him for Baines.

    7. Nolberto Solano
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 7 months ago

I say yes it is worth it.

Baines has the 7th highest amount of points for a defender even though he has only one clean sheet to his name and a penalty miss as well.

With a good run of fixtures coming up for Everton, you will see more and more clean sheets picked up adding to his already impressive goal, 3 assists and 6 bonus points which will all improve also with the better run of fixtures.

I'm getting Baines in but I don't have to sacrifice Sterling or Fab. Plus I have Ivan, Costa and Agüero. You just have to spend the money where it matters.

It's not a immediate transfer but does it sound like a good move?

    Two new community articles published.

Forget points, there are far more important victories to win in Fantasy Football - says Eunuch Jelly.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/10/13/winning-the-real-fantasy-football/

Plus - just how does Aguero measure up against fantasy stalwart Rooney. Not too well, says MOTR.

nice to see my gut sentiments about Rooney as an FPL prospect vs Aguero be 'proven' with numbers.

Just based on minutes Aguero has produced an average of 7.4 PP90 during his time in the PL, versus Rooney's 6.4. If he should, against all odds and conventional wisdom, avoid too many injuries, that might just make him a worthwhile investment still.

A great option.. 6 home games in the next 9(qpr the 10th game) and he has penos. the worry is that ideye will come in and force Berahino out on the wing. still worth a punt though. it's between him and sakho for me

If you are going to double up anywhere surley Chelsea is the way to go. I think by seasons end they will have the most clean sheets which means doubling up is a good option. Baines is a good option but not many clean sheets and not worth a -4 over Azpi

"Eliaquim Mangala, as the defender is a doubt for France’s next qualifier against Armenia this evening with a thigh problem."

It is not a qualifier it is a friendly, as France is hosting the comp, he should be rested anyway so doubt we have further news till Mancinis press conference.
