The Community Round Up

The availability of Diego Costa, European exertions and the impressive Gameweek 8 points hauls of the likes of Dusan Tadic and Sergio Aguero were among the key topics under discussion this week. In this latest round-up we look back at all the best community chatter as well as look back at this week’s community articles, members tables and star turns in our various leagues and tournaments.

The Community Articles

Our community writers hopped over the English channel this week to investigate how European competition involvement influences Premier League sides. Kesh took a look at the lessons to be learned from Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Anderlecht, while Ludo published this excellent analysis of whether there really is such a thing as a Europa League hangover.

West Brom may not have European involvement but are still a side to interest our community scribes. Among The Puntmaster‘s trio of punts this week is Baggies defender Sebastien Pocognoli. Meanwhile, West Brom were among the hottest properties going into Gameweek 9 in both attack and defence, according to The Sarjeant’s latest form gauge.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Will he or won’t he? This is the key question being asked on Diego Costa’s chances of making this weekend’s clash with United. Chelsea boss Joe Mourinho has been known to favour more than just the occasional mind game and revealed earlier today that his star striker has “a very little chance” of making it. Given the uncertainty, some community managers, such as Chris_ White, have already transferred out the striker as we discovered in our discussion on the Costa dilemma.

Rickardinho has also been looking at Costa exit strategies and served up this excellent pros and cons post on ditching him and drafting in Sergio Aguero for a hit. Dusan Citizen was another to sing the praises of City’s Argentine this week. He wonders whether given his startling recent form he could even be granted the accolade of being this season’s version of Luis Suarez.

If Diego Costa fails to make this weekend’s game his price will surely plummet, although it may take quite a few more absences to qualify for Wakey’s Falling Stars team, made up of those whose price has fallen below their initial price tag. Wakey gave us an update on how his falling stars from Gameweek 8 performed and showed that there are plenty of bargans to pick up. His Gamweek XI achieved an impressive haul of 70 pts, 21 above the average with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Everton’s Phil Jagielka among his top performers.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic was another to enjoy a stellar Gameweek 8: he duly delivered on his promising underlying statistics with a 23-point haul. Such was his impact that Seb 10 asked whether Tadic now deserves “essential” status. Demi is not convinced and wants to see further evidence, while O’Shaughnessy believes he is the best mid-priced midfielder based on his data and last weekend’s tally.

Another player to flirt with that hallowed essential status is Everton’s Leighton Baines. He was also a principal guest the points party, notching an impressive haul of 15 in Gameweek 8. However, Costra Nosta warns against forgetting the attacking threat of his fellow Everton full back Seamus Coleman.

For those that had Aguero, Tadic and Baines in their team a bit points total was inevitable, prompting E6 Hammers to take a stroll down memory lane to look back on some similarly impressive high-scoring game weeks of yesteryear.

Saniul was the winner of this week’s search for a community Scout Pick champion and has a huge gap of more than 100 points to help the community make up over top placed Paul.

This week we also announced that the champion who manages the best Gameweek score (or best score from the first ten matches in a double Gameweek) will win a £100 Amazon voucher. While we’re at it, a reminder that, from Monday, our weekly search for a champion will be via a community article rather than a hot topic.

The Members Tables

Goalkeeper’s prowess was the subject of 46612’s table, which is filtered by “saves made”, while Doosra has been looking at fierce foragers, his term for forwards that hold onto the ball.

Meanwhile, Sleep Talk has been assessing goalscoring defenders over their last four matches, a table sorted by shots in the box.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Tinkerman is clinging on to the lead of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors league and now sits in 439th overall in FPL. Mark is closing in and is now just two points off the lead after his strong post-Wildcard Gameweek.

Rasping Drive was another to enjoy a bountiful weekend. He is in 32nd overall in FPL and sits proudly atop the Puffinboy Memorial Cup for veteran posters, the FFS Old Farts Club for our posters of advancing years as well as the FFS Dead Zone league.

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, ADAMS_6  hit the top score in Gameweek 8 with 127. There are now 1054 teams left after 63 were eliminated.

Elsewhere, ENR dropped by to deliver this update on all the latest ups and downs in the FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup themed tournament.

    Here's my team folks:

    Forster McCarthy
    Bertrand Wilson Duff Chambers NTaylor
    Siggy Sterling Fabs ADM Boyd
    Costa Aguero Welbeck

Have 2FT (0.4m ITB) but really stuck on where to spend the transfer.... Any thoughts?

Maybe NTaylor -> Kaboul, get Baines in somehow?

    Keeping Costa btw. Cheers.

Yeah I know it's boring but I'd save. You'll have lots of options next week, but you're gunna wanna play Ivan home vs QPR tbh. Maybe look at downgrading ADM/siggy next week to allow for Aguero, but who knows, there will be injuries and form changes so just play it by ear

Will be interesting to see how they lineup. I'm disappointed LVG is chopping and changing his formations a lot. I would have thought his 'philosophy' would be based on a particular formation.

RVP I assume is not 100% fit. Mata I still can't figure. He's got talent, why is he not busting his butt to show he can play in this system. His future may be riding on it.

                  RVP is done.

Mata is a midget with no stamina and no balls.

I did Terry > Baines for a hit last week, and he outscored him by 13.. He's also got a vastly superior fixture, and the attacking potential for a higher upside.

I don't think many defenders are worth a hit but players of the likes of Ivan/Baines are, and Cahill hasn't got the attacking threat to punish you for it.

    Morning all

I'm sure people are sick of hearing about C****a but I've just been looking at his stats in the members' area. Running him through the Comparison Tool for gameweeks 1-4 and 4-7 produces quite surprising results, both overall and per game average. I'm wondering what the reasons for that precipitous decline could be: the niggling hamstring, fatigue, opposition tactics and so on. It'll be interesting to see his form when he returns. I'm rather concerned that he might develope into a kind of VDV figure, someone who's brilliant when fit but who needs constant medical treatment and is liable to periodic rests.

Non owners shouldn't be too concerned. His numbers aren't amazing and he does have some hard games coming up. Although his ownership is still massive and that will make some people very nervous.

Lol. Non owners shouldn't be too concerned about the highest owned/captained player in the game who is the main striker in the best team in the league. Wow...

We have a non-Costa owner reassuring himself here. 😉

I'm a Costa owner 😉 just trying to be magnanimous. If the numbers are dropping thats one straw non owners can hand onto.

I think his numbers in the first few games were exceptionally high and the ones after more of the kind of numbers we can expect over the whole season. They're still fantastic though but that's not the point: I'm wondering if he will develope into the kind of player who needs a rest every few weeks, the type who frequently misses out through niggles and knocks like VDV used to or Sturridge does now. I know Costa is a supremely fit athlete and a bit of a hard case but he is 37 after all.

He'll continue to score goals but as we have seen, his overall play and hence numbers are nothing special. 9 goals and only 7bps (6 of which came when he scored a brace and a hatrick) says it all. I don't expect him to get many assists.

      I'm a Costa owner.

        All jokes aside.

At his current ratio he's looking at a lot of goals. And he's explosive enough to provide the kind of upside that makes him a good captaincy pick as well.

I do think with that creative midfield behind him the goals are going to flow when he's on the pitch and he will be involved.

Exactly. He's going to be on the end of so many chances with Oscar, Hazard, Fabregas et al feeding him. His stats will probably suggest he's under performing and I don't see him getting many assists but the big number with Costa is always going to be goals scored.

On a wildcard. I expect Costa to get limited mins this week but be fine for QPR.

Should I do Costa > Lukaku or Pelle and leave enough ITB to bring Costa right back on a FT next week?

I agree with this logic. Better to get the ideal team straight away and not plan a transfer.

A forward line of Costa, Aguero, Pelle looks optimum to me.

I don't necessarily want a 11m player getting a 30 minute run out when I can get a Lukaku v Burnley and a Costa v QPR for the price of 1 transfer.

You don't value transfers highly enough.

If you get an injury/suspension this week you'll have another concern and then it'll cost you -4 if you want to get him in.

I don't count what comes out of Mourinho's mouth as 'signs.' I'm in the everything he says is a mind game and what matters is what happens on the pitch. A 2 game layoff, followed by an individual practice looks like a recovering player, not a player who will get 90 minutes.

I guess I'd lean toward Lukaku as a one week punt. Pelle and Southampton are in fantastic form, but I think Burnley's an easier fixture than Stoke.

If I was in your position I'd be hugely tempted by a one-week punt on Bony. Leicester's defensive stats are the second worst in the league and the Swans do create chances.
