Scout Scribbles – Forster Set for Lengthy Lay-Off

Southampton are left devastated by news that Fraser Forster could be sidelined for a year. Danny Rose calls off from international duties due to hip and hamstring injuries, whilst Raheem Sterling plans an early exit from the England camp before the Three Lions face Italy in Turin. Elsewhere, Martin Skrtel is handed a three-match suspension for his late challenge on David de Gea and Robin van Perise eyes up a return to action in time for the Manchester derby.

Forster faces year out

Fraser Forster has been ruled out of action for between nine and 12 months after scans on his knee revealed serious damage to his left patellar tendon. The Southampton goalkeeper took an awkward fall during the Burnley encounter on Saturday and was stretchered off. Speaking on the devastating news, Saints executive director of football, Les Reed, insisted that Forster would receive the best medical support possible as they try to prepare him for a return next season:

“Fraser is an outstanding goalkeeper and has been a huge part of our success this season. While this is a challenging situation, we look forward to him returning to action as soon as he is fully fit. I am sure he will go on to make a significant number of appearances for Southampton and for England, and will get the best support available to help him recover to do so.”

The Scout Says: Forster’s gloomy prognosis has dealt a hammer blow to Southampton’s hopes of securing a Champions League berth. With Graziano Pelle struggling for form of late (one goal in 14) and the Saints’ midfielders only delivering sporadic attacking returns, the Hampshire club have been far from prolific, tallying the fewest goals (42) of any side currently in the top seven. Instead, their success this term has hinged on the league’s most resilient defence, having been breached on only 21 occasions – four fewer than the much-vaunted Chelsea rearguard. With Forster sidelined and Artur Boruc unable to be recalled from his loan stint at Bournemouth, 38-year-old Kelvin Davis is set to deputise for the former Celtic stopper and offer us a route into a defence that’s already racked up 14 clean sheets this season  more than any other side. Priced at a mere 4.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Davis is set to face five of the bottom eight (eve, HUL, sun, lei, AVL) and a trip to Stoke in the next seven Gameweeks.

Rose withdraws from England squad

Danny Rose sustained “hip and hamstring injuries” while training with the England squad and has pulled out ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on Friday. A statement on the FA website regarding the matter read as follows:

“Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose has withdrawn from the England camp through injury. The left-back will play no further part in preparation for the forthcoming fixtures against Lithuania and Italy and has returned to his club.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Tottenham have accrued just six clean sheets and only four teams have conceded more goals (45) than Mauricio Pochettino’s side this term, it might be surprising to some that Rose (5.0) boasts an 8.8% ownership. A portion of that can be attributed to managers who snapped up the left-back for Spurs’ double Gameweek, yet Rose’s solid attacking returns (two goals and five assists in 22 starts) have rendered him an outside bet regardless. A timeline hasn’t been given on a potential return for Rose, but his absence for a Gameweek 31 tie at Burnley would afford Ben Davies (4.4) a first start in three fixtures. Despite the Lilywhites’ lack of a shut-out in their previous seven league encounters, their upcoming trio of matches (bur, AVL, new) offers hope to current investors in Spurs’ rearguard, given that the Clarets (26 goals) and Villa (19) are two of the three lowest scoring teams in the league this season.

Skrtel slapped with three-match ban

Martin Skrtel will sit out Liverpool’s next three matches after being found guilty by the FA of stamping on Manchester United stopper David De Gea in the dying embers of the Anfield clash.

The Scout Says: Skrtel’s moment of perceived ill-discipline rules him out of two league ties  away to Arsenal and at home to Newcastle  in addition to the Reds’ FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers. The Slovakian centre-back became the second Liverpool player to be charged with violent conduct last Gameweek, after Steven Gerrard saw red within 38 seconds of entering the fray for a stamp on Ander Herrera. In Skrtel’s absence, Dejan Lovren is the most likely candidate to be tasked with slotting into Brendan Rodgers’ three centre-back formation, yet the Croatian defender is struggling with an abdominal wall complaint and remains a doubt for Liverpool’s next fixture at Arsenal. Failing that, Kolo Toure could be set to earn his seventh start of the campaign. In two of the three matches that Skrtel’s missed this season, the Reds have fallen to a home defeat against Aston Villa and been held to a 2-2 home draw by bottom-placed Leicester City. Their trip to the Emirates to face an Arsenal side that’s recorded eight consecutive home league victories will be a stern test for a backline that’s registered seven clean sheets in 10 when unencumbered by injury and suspension.

Sterling to cut short England stay

Raheem Sterling will return from international duty with England earlier than expected to receive treatment for a minor toe injury. The Jamaica-born winger will feature in the Three Lions’ Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania before sitting out the friendly against Italy next Tuesday:

The Scout Says: In light of Liverpool’s spate of injuries (Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet) and suspensions (Steven Gerrard, Martin Skrtel) in the aftermath of last weekend, Brendan Rodgers is loath to risk Sterling aggravating a slight knock in a largely meaningless friendly against Italy in Turin. The Reds’ head coach will doubtless be recollecting last September when Sturridge sustained the first of several injuries that kept him sidelined for nearly five months. With the England striker and Lallana both doubts for their Gameweek 31 visit to the Emirates, Sterling will be hoping to be moved back into a central position after failing to earn points in each of his last three league appearances, which coincided with a shift to the right wing-back berth as a result of Jordan Ibe’s injury.

Van Persie targets derby return

Robin van Persie is hoping to be fit for the Manchester derby on 12 April (Gameweek 32). The Red Devils striker is said to be stepping up his fitness regime during the international break in a bid to be in contention for the City clash.

The Scout Says: Van Persie has been sidelined for over a month by virtue of ankle ligament damage that he sustained during United’s trip to Swansea in Gameweek 26. The Old Trafford outfit have chalked up victories in all four of the matches that the Dutchman has missed, scoring eight goals and conceding only one in the process, with Wayne Rooney stepping up to spearhead the attack in Van Persie’s absence and netting three goals in four outings. In light of Rooney’s gradual return to prominence in his favoured role and the fact that Louis van Gaal’s outfit have turned a corner in recent weeks – recording commanding wins over top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool – it remains to be seen whether Van Persie will be immediately installed to the starting line-up. As we saw last weekend against Liverpool, Van Gaal resisted the temptation to hand Angel Di Maria a recall after a one-match suspension and kept faith in the line-up that swept aside Spurs in the previous Gameweek, which suggests that his compatriot Van Persie may face a tough task to justify his first-team inclusion once fully-fit.

I think there's a dearth of realistic, world class strikers at the moment. Lewandowski, Cavani, Ibra, Benzema, Suarez, Aguero - none of them will go to Utd (maybe Cavani).

I'd be looking at someone like Lucas Ocampos, Dybala or Kevin Volland. The reason? Well, I've never seen them play, but they were all fantastic for me on FM. I can only presume this was Wenger's criteria when signing Yaya Sanogo.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Its international break so a good time to reflect on the bonus point system in FPL.

This year is probably the first I can remember where there have been hardly any criticism of the BPS in FPL. The key changes this year were an improvement in bonus for wingers and full backs and a reduction in the sorts of allocation where multiple players secured bonus.

Has FPL finally got it right regarding the bonus system?

How have you taken advantage of it this year? Has it altered your picks?

What, if any, improvements would you like to see to the BPS next year.

Myhill's performance would have got him a bonus point in the Liverpool game.

This would support my suggestion that I've put forward many times before for some sort of banding for the bonus. E.g. anyone scoring more than 20 BPS gets 1 bonus, more than 30 gets 2 and more than 40 gets 3.

Crap games where noone performs see hardly any bonus, good games with many good performances would have several players well rewarded.

This would just lead to people jamming their teams with players from the top teams with no consideration for the bottom teams, as they are more likely to be involved in high-scoring games. Nice theory but don't think that would work in practice.

Hadn't really noticed but now you mention it you're right, there has been a lower amount of posts regarding criticism of the bonus points.

It does look as though they've done some good with with spreading out defensive BPs. Players like Azpilcueta, Bertrand, Clyne able to compete with their CB counterparts.

Ever since they ditched the press reporter system I think it's been better and they seem to have improved in the last couple of years.

I don't really look into it in great detail like some so it would be interesting to hear how things could be improved even further.

I think for a system it is good. People will always complain about well in this game x scored 2 goals and only got 2 bonus vs this person who got 3 etc.

But remember, no system is perfect, a good system is one with a low amount of anomalies.

definitely it has altered picks. many go hazard instead of costa despite costa scoring more goals.

since its a fair playing ground i do not see much need to improve. if full backs get more BPS than b4 then we should get them. people should just change their strategies accordingly to take advantage of the system instead of complaining.

its ok imo. u dont need high value teams to and get all the star players..u just have to be constantly aware of the game and pick the performing budget players.

having a fast price rises system promote unnecessary kneejerk imo..though some price changes have been pretty weird this season. overall i like how people all have reasonable team value but not insane and just buy the star team

i guess for the developer, their objective of the game is not merely to promote the star players i guess..if not who will bother to know who are the current starters of leicester city? its also more fun to see the likes of schlupp scoring a goal to overtake your opponent

id still like to see 3 points given to that games man of the match, none of this 3 2 1 bonus, nothing to do with passes, dribbles etc just watch a game and wait for who they decide who man of the match was, (whether we agree or not is another thing of course) for example i remember when Liverpool beat Newcastle 5-1 and Sky named Shay Given man of the match... and i agreed because it could quite easily of been double figures

would make the game more challenging, yes its fun when your captain gets a goal then he is more or less guarenteed bonus but id enjoy the game more not knowing if my captain got bonus for scoring

That's what the system was a few years ago (still 3,2,1 Dusty Bin but allocated by a human being watching the matches).

I quite liked it that way, despite the fact bonus was most often awarded to the player(s) with the most eye-catching hair or who were called Barry Ferguson.

The system is a huge improvement, but they forgot the keepers.

No keeper has more than 7 bonus points. That makes little sense when keepers like De Gea (2 bonus points) and Lloris (6 bonus points) almost singlehandedly have carried their teams for parts of the season.

      1. Piggs Boson

You could argue that keepers already get bonus pts through saves. They are, in general, the best value players in the game thanks to save points.

Save points are there to compete with assists and goals. (In a pretty poor manner, as keepers only get "paid" for every three.)

Bonus points should be up for grabs for the three best player on the pitch, not like it is now where one position has almost no chance of getting a bonus.

The highest scoring keeper have 119 points (De Gea) and comes in at 20th for total score overall. (Beaten by five defenders, nine midfielders and five forwards.) To me that is really strange, when on another forum I frequent the discussion flares high if he's been the best player in the league this season or not, but in fpl there's nineteen players better than him.

If that were to happen then they would have to increase the prices of keepers. They are already terrific value (Pts per £). I'm not sure I want more expensive keepers, I want to invest in goals and assists, that's where the fun lies.

In a way they wouldn't have to change the pricing - you're obliged to play one goalkeeper, no more no less. It's not like if they cocked up the value of the defenders somehow and suddenly 5-3-2 was the only reasonable formation if you wanted to succeed. I get your point though.

Personally I find it just as fun to get defensive points, as they are generally awarded for a whole match well done, not just a single moment of magic (or a deflected shot off the arse..).

I'd be happy for a more differentiated pricing of keepers (and defenders). Now you have to be bonkers to invest more than 5.0 in your keeper, as they all get more or less the same amount of points. The gap between De Gea and the 16th best keeper is just 20 points. There's almost no point putting any effort into your keepers; just pick a cheap one that's playing and forget about it.

That's why I'd like keepers to get a bigger share of the bonus points. Alternatively they could get a boost for CS (for instance 6 points), as untill the next Chilavert comes along they have no source of offensive points (with added bonus points) that the outfield players can get.

I still maintain that GKs should get more points for CSs. The fact that cheaper keepers are as good as, or better than, the expensive ones due to save points is stupid. Yet they keep pricing the GKs from the 'lesser' sides far cheaper than the ones from the top clubs. They should get 5 or 6 points for a CS, otherwise the expensive GKs will simply never justify their price.

Interesting one. I agree with all of this in principle - There's normally a relatively small gap at the end of each season (points-wise) for the top GKs vs the also-rans - so to increase the CS points for keepers would help here. However, the save points should (in theory) be the GKs 'bonus' over the other defenders in achieving the CS - as he's earned them with saves. For the keeper who does nothing because his defenders have kept the opposition at bay so well, should he deserve extra points than the defenders do for the CS? I'd say not.

Perhaps not, but the fact that one slip up from the GK ruins the CS while mistakes by one of the defenders are more readily rectified. One defender could have an absolute stinker and still get a CS, perhaps unwarranted. But it's more the fact that save points don't nearly cover the attacking potential of the defenders.

I find the system much more balanced than previous years (especially the man in the stand and Assou-Ekkotto's hair getting him bonuses) and overall I quite like it so far.

It doesnt really affect my choices like in the old days, which in itself means that the system is largely inert - ie there aren't bonus whores that are otherwise not scoring points, the players getting the bonus are largely deserving of it.

But then of course in some ways that makes it mostly a pointless exercise, as those are the players scoring points anyway and would still be the players to have even if we had no bonus system at all.

The only improvement I would like to see (other than the removal of it or a return to the man in the stands perhaps) would be something to increase the likelihood of largely marginalised players (such as goalkeepers and DMs) getting more. For example, the top players in each position have returned 22-34 bonus points. Except the goalies, there the top scorer has just 7. I think this needs addressing.

I think what Id really like to see is a system where you get points for what players do directly - ie you get the points that would be awarded for an action like a recovery, assists, goal, save etc etc.

So rather than overlaying another points system on top of that (thus removing you a further step from the true nature of the game) I would prefer it if we scored whatever the score was for the sum of a players actions during the game. This would of course require a change/tweak to system used, but I think it would be good personally. (but I bet im in a minority)

I don't think they've got it spot on at all. I think the difference is it's easier to work out so people are selecting players who tend to benefit from it. The lack of bonus, ever, for keepers or defensive midfielders is a huge oversight. For Phil Jones to have more bonus points that David De Gea for example, is a scandal.

Goalkeepers seem to be the only players who struggle for BAPs, DDG for example has only got BAPs in one game (2 points V Spurs) all season. Maybe GKs should be seperate, give 3,2,1 points to best 3 goalies over the GW?

It'd be fun if there was a way to devide a greater range of bonus points. I often think handing out 6 points between three players in a single match is harsh, and some matches I think nobody deserves any points.

It would be good if there was a way you could get 5 or 6 players on bonus points, and getting points of 5 or 6 as well, so that defensive midfielders who we all recognise as some of the best players in the league would get noticed.

Still think BAPS should only be decided on the basis of actions that aren't already rewarded in FPL. So discounting goals, assists, saves altogether. That way they're actually bonus, not just repeated rewards. Like the baseline Baps articles/posts that circulated not so long ago.

      More bonus for:
      # For Last Man Tackle, the player shall get additional 2 BPS
      # For Clearance of The Line, the player shall get additional 2 BPS
      # For Hitting the Woodwork, the player shall get 2 BPS
      # For GK, after get 6 saves, for each one save shall get 2 BPS
      # For GK, for each superb save (must be a goal chance), GK shall get additional 2 BPS

Why should a player be rewarded for hitting the woodwork? Okay, he managed to scare the keeper and even kept the ball in, but at the end of the day, the Keeper didn't make the save and he didn't score the goal. So it is a Shot that was not on target really.

I don't know about BPs because this is my first FPL season and I have nothing to compare it to. However, having seen quite a few live games this season I can say that the players with BPs were often not the outstanding players on the pitch to the naked eye.

Azpilicueta is an example. He often scored BPs in the first half of the season and has 11 in total. Mostly he defended competently and pressed extremely well. He made relatively little attacking contribution. In many of the games where Azpi was awarded BPs, Matic stood out more and was more obviously central to Chelsea's performance. But Matic has 3 BPs all season and 2 were in a game where he scored and got an assist. So something is not quite right.

If anything I'd like to see BPs reduced in influence. Often a striker can gain BPs by scoring 1 goal; a goal plus an assist almost assures BPs, often 2 or 3 of them. Plus there are games where maybe 6 players deserve BPs and others where none do. Maybe awarding only 3 BPs per game instead of 6 would help.

What I'd like to see happen is for the basic scoring to be changed. 5 points for a GK clean sheet. Create a new category of "defensive midfielder" and give them 2 points for a clean sheet whilst removing clean sheet points from the "attacking midfielder" category. Something like that.

At the moment, players like Matic, Schneiderlin, Carrick, N'zonzi and Noble are relatively unrewarded by FPL for their importance to their teams.

Well I like it. Obviously, no system is perfect, but statistically, this seems to be working quite well.

Also, people discussing about Foster's saves, well, he did make 13. But he also conceded 3. So that's like 4.33 saves per goal conceded in that game, which is not a very impressive stat (only in statistical terms). The performance was amazing, but then again, he did concede 3 goals.

      Less complaints that's for certain.

The key has been the transparency of the system: people can see how the points have been earned rather than that highly subjective "man in the stand" system FPL used a few years ago (no, Dusty, don't even go there).

As others have mentioned, the DMs and most noticeably, gks, seem to be less favoured. Perhaps FPL might consider restoring some balance here as there is no difference between an important save and a goal being scored.

They both help win a match.

    Forster and Southampton defensive solidity....

How much has Forster influenced Southamptons clean sheet capabilities this season? Have their defence and defensive midfielders been the reason for the CS's or has Forster been a big influence?

Will Davis be able to maintain their defensive form? They certainly have the fixtures to do so...

I had tripled up with Forster, Clyne, Toby, and now need to decide whether to switch to Myhill or Davis....

DO we keep the faith or hedge our bets?....

Davis is not near the level of Forster who himself is only pretty solid. I don't think Foster has been the key influence behind the cleanies so if you thought the triple up was worth it before it's still probably worth it now.

Yes, I've got Ramsey in place for Sanchez as I'm happy to bench him and he's a good gwk 37 diff. Cazorla went a while ago and I'll probably ditch Koscielny for Ivanovic this week or next.

I'm ok with having one for the blank on the bench, as from gwk 35 we'll be looking to stock up on Arsenal and possibly Liverpool too.

Stewart Downing - is he worth it?

    Pros:
    + Goals / assists this season: 5 / 8 ---> Goals&Assists if you remove matches against the top seven: 5 / 7.
+ West Ham's remaining games this season = City + Seven teams beneath 10th place on the table.

    Cons:
    - West Ham have "nothing" to play for.
    - They play against teams that do have something to play for.

What are peoples thoughts on this?
Can he be the man going in for Sanchez, given this data and his price?

Maybe someone can fill us up with some useful stats regarding Downing as well?
Have he improved lately; touches in the box, shots, etc?

I like these questions. A player who has gone completely off the radar. There is a reason why, obviously, that people stay away. However, he would be a good differential. The only question is; can west ham score a lot, are they bored of playing poorly for the last few months and start playing well?

  26. Good options for next season?

Obviously there is a lot of variables to some - managers/players moving in and out and of course the all important price but who do you think could be a great option for next season - they dont have to be Suarez like i'm talking about players that could see themselves under priced next season by FPL - maybe though a poor or injury ravaged campaign this time around. Here's a few of mine i think are worth keeping an eye on:

    Def:

    Luke Shaw
    John Stones
    Winston Reid

    Mid:

    Mark Noble
    Siem de Jong
    Juan Mata
    Jordan Henderson
    Phillipe Coutinho
    Robert Snodgrass
    Juan Cuadrado
    Aaron Ramsey
    Theo Walcott

    Fwd:

    Papiss Cisse
    Jay Rodriguez
    Emanuel Adebayor (if he moves)
    Bojan

I think identifying bad options will be equally important. Especially popular bad options.

Kane, for example, will be popular next season despite a price tag of £10m at a guess. He will be a bad option at that price. He has been very lucky to score as heavily as he has this season - a combination of a "purple patch" where everything drops for him (including a goal for a defelected shot that was going wide in his last game) and the fact that he is the new kid on the block.

Next season I expect that teams will catch up with him, the furore will die down and he will revert to more normal levels of performance for a 22yo striker in his 2nd senior season. He's a good young player but he won't be worth £10m.

Southampton defenders will also be over-valued, especially if they reach Europa League as seems very likely. An Arsenal-Liverpool FA Cup Final would guarantee Europa League qualification for 7th place in the PL. WBA defenders will probably still be under-valued because their performance over the whole 2014-15 season won't look so special. WBA defenders could easily be next season's Clyne and Bertrand.

A lot of this comes down to how teams are valued. Liverpool players were generally over-valued this season based on last season's 2nd place. Everton similar. Southampton players were under-valued. West Ham similar. Toure was over-valued on the basis of a stellar season that was unlikley to be repeated. RVP similar on the basis of past glories.

I can't wait till Kane proves doubters like you wrong! 🙂

As for being 'lucky' you make your own 'luck'

Do you even know what the word 'purple patch' means? 17 goals in 15 games is NOT that!

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

          It is exactly that.

          I'm not a doubter, I think he should be England's 1st choice No. 9.

But at the moment he is out-performing Shearer at his best, everything is going for him and he won't keep that up. I'm just being realistic.

            • 13 Years

why won't he keep it up? just because you say so? you say everything is going for him, that's because he is making everything 'go for him' through his own hard work.

the fact that you are implying that this is just a hot streak is delusional as i have already proven above

Sturridge would disappoint even at £9m. He's overrated, flashy, nowhere near as good without Suarez to hide behind and very injury prone - one of those players who doesn't like playing with even the slightest knock.

        1. Patch
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

Yes, injury is a concern with him, but if he can stay fit he will score goals. I hold out hope. I remember van Persie used to be incredibly injury prone and then managed to put in two epic seasons when he got into his late 20s.

Aguero has, of the three, the trickier final 2 Gameweeks (swa, SOU) - so probably him.

Wouldn't need to worry about getting him back so the value thing goes out of the window, could beef up a MID or DEF with the funds difference too, which is likely needed for an Arsenal mid in GW37.

      1. Misery Loves Kompany
        • 9 Years

The exception would be if City are somehow miraculously still in the title race by then - in which case they'll be throwing the kitchen sink at it and Aguero will be nailed on - he is undroppable in that scenario IMO.

Not sure it's a given. If Arsenal have secured a Top 4 spot and are in the Cup Final then they'll likely use the squad for the DGW - Giroud being one of many prime candidates who'll get, at best, one full game and one cameo.

        This^^^

Also I don't rate United away as a great fixture in that DGW - with the added risk of rotation, I think I'd find it hard to look past Harry Kane at home to Hull in the same GW.

Depends who has anything to play for - would imagine JM would want to keep Drogba and/or Remy sweet with some gametime if the league has been sewn up already, and would be a nexcuse to send Costa on an early holiday with his dodgy hammy

That's not a nice thing to call Christina, however accurate it may be.

He's been called a lot worse (probably also accurate).

    Panti (Forster)
Ivan | Clyne | Rose (Dawson | McShane)
Haz | Silva | Sterling | Eriksen (Boyd)
    Aguero | Kane | Austin

    2 FTs

does this plan sound resonable for the next 3 GWs?

    GW31: Rose ➡ Naughton
    GW32: Forster, Sterling/Eriksen, Austin ➡ K.Davis, Mane/Downing, D.Costa (-4)
    GW33: save FT
