Scout Notes – Gameweek 37 – Sunday

Yaya Toure scores twice as City get the better of Swansea at the Liberty. Gylfi Sigurdsson and fit-again Bafetimbi Gomis are amongst the goals for the home side. Elsewhere, Arsenal take a step closer to securing third spot with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Toure double downs Swans

Having been recalled to the side in place of Fernando, Yaya Toure bagged a brace as Manchester City recorded a 4-2 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. Three goals in five starts have served to reaffirm Toure’s status as a Fantasy big-hitter, following a disappointing few months (one goal in eight starts) for the Ivorian midfielder. With a home tie against Southampton – who’ve carded four successive defeats on the road – next on the Sky Blues’ agenda, Toure (10.7) could well be an enticing differential for those managers searching for an edge on the final day. Elsewhere in the City camp, James Milner netted for the second match in succession, while Wilfried Bony came off the bench and cemented all three points with a goal in the 92nd minute against his former club.

Sergio Aguero delivered attacking returns for the sixth consecutive Gameweek, supplying the assist for Milner’s strike. The Argentine failed to grace the scoresheet for the first time in six starts – although City continued with a lone forward set-up, he chalked up just one shot inside the box.

David Siva notched two assists for the second match running, boosting his tally to one goal and five assists in three starts since being sold by over 230,000 FPL managers in Gameweek 34 due to Chelsea’s double. Only Jason Puncheon and Stewart Downing (both five) mustered more attempts at goal than the Spanish playmaker (four) over the weekend – although Silva attempted all of these from inside the box (a league high).

The main point of note from Manchester City’s perspective is their effervescent attack. Manuel Pellegrini’s men have notched 18 goals in their previous six outings, recording three clean sheets in the process. Aguero and Silva naturally look undroppable for the last weekend, while the likes of Milner – who ranks second among all midfielders this Gameweek in terms of penalty box touches (12) – is strengthening his case for inclusion.

Gomis and Sigurdsson in the points

After falling 2-0 down within 36 minutes, the Swans mounted a valiant comeback and pegged the scoreline back to 2-2, by way of goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis. The former is enjoying a strong finish to the season (two goals and one assist in four starts), while the latter picked up where he left off before succumbing to a hamstring injury in Gameweek 32, carding five goals in as many appearances. The 6.5-priced Gomis finally looks up to the job of filling the void left upon Bony’s decampment and will be one to watch across the Fantasy games next season.

Swansea’s strong showing against the 2013/14 Premier League champions was indicative of their recent form. Garry Monk’s charges chalked up three successive victories prior to Sunday, which included two wins on their travels (Newcastle United and Arsenal). The Welsh club’s Gameweek 38 opponents – Crystal Palace – are fresh off a 3-1 victory over Liverpool, yet the fact the Eagles lost their last three home ties will spur on Monk’s men. As such, the modestly priced Gomis and Sigurdsson could well attract some late investment as managers fine-tune their squads.

Herrera volley not enough for United

Ander Herrera netted his sixth goal of the season and third in seven starts as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 home draw by Arsenal. The hosts enjoyed the lead until the 82nd minute, before a deflected Theo Walcott cross wrong-footed stand-in shot-stopper Victor Valdes and pulled the visitors level.

Ashley Young tallied his third assist in two matches and fifth in the previous six. In Angel Di Maria’s absence, the former Aston Villa man has evolved into one of their chief creative sparks, delivering a strong return on his budget 5.0 price tag. The exploits of Young and Herrera this Gameweek highlighted how difficult it’s been to pinpoint the best option in the United midfield of late, with attacking returns distributed fairly evenly in the centre of the park.

David De Gea was forced off with an injury 17 minutes before the final whistle, rendering him a doubt for their trip to Hull. Considering that Valdes’ earned his first minutes in a United strip on Sunday, the ex-Barca keeper will naturally be rusty, providing a boost to the Tigers’ hopes of survival.

Gunners rescued by Blackett own goal

Although Arsenal will doubtless feel content at salvaging a point late on at Old Trafford, Fantasy managers who chased the Gunners double Gameweek were left exasperated by the poverty of returns at both ends of the pitch. The 230,000 managers who invested in the Gunners’ defensive starters over the last three weeks watched their clean sheet evaporate within the half hour, while Arsenal’s attack conspired to offer the least goal threat (five attempts) of any side this Gameweek.

Olivier Giroud extended his barren spell to five matches, having failed to force a meaningful save out of David Gea with his two strikes at goal. Meanwhile, the midfield starters managed just two shots on target between them.

Arsene Wenger named the same XI for the sixth game running, but that streak could be set to be terminated after he hinted that “Everyone will be tested this week” due to the club’s upcoming matches against Sunderland and West Brom.

With the Gunners still needing a win to clinch third spot, though, it remains to be seen whether Wenger will roll out many changes for the midweek clash with the Black Cats. If Arsenal get the better of Sunderland, though, their manager may well make alterations against the Baggies with one eye on the upcoming FA Cup final.

    Idea.

I know over the summer people stop coming here as often, at least until prices arrive so the scoutcast isn't done.

How about doing a few every now and then with tips for each of the different fantasy football games you cover?

For example you could have Luke on for the Sky game, letting us know how it might be different to FPL and what tips he has. I know there's articles but I like to hear/see discussion. Looking to play FPL, UFPL and Sky next year so would find it useful

(Sorry if this has been asked already, or already happens!)

There certainly could be scope for a pre season one after the FPL game has launched and we know the prices.

I think it would be helpful. GK rotations, decent cheap defence options.

I'd like it for other games too.

I know most is covered in articles as I say but I like watching discussion.

Fantasy Football Scout - daily hot topic

    Kane replacements

Surely even the most hard line of Kane fans must accept he has been a long overdue departure from our teams. Many already have. But there are still 47% of manager with the Spurs man in their side.

So with the final Gameweek 38 being something of a lottery in recent years regarding the highest scorers this looks a great time to finally ditch and take a punt.

Who do you think is the best Kane replacement is?

Here’s some likely lads in the sub 6.5m category

Vardy or Ulloa – at home to QPR. This looks like a good time to join the Leicester party

Ayoze/Cisse – Newcastle could be in need of a win. But even if they aren’t West Ham have been far from convincing in recent weeks.

Murray – On penalties. A final chance to shine at home against Swansea

Befetimbi Gomis – One of the few high points Swansea could take from their defeat against ManCity was the constant menace of their star striker. He is my pick of the bunch.

Diouf – The Stoke man looks nailed on to start. Hat off to Mark Hughes who has somehow convinced on form Stoke that they have something to play for. Can lackluster Liverpool keep Diouf at bay?

Cisse if Carver says he will start otherwise looking at Perez/Ulloa although I already own Vardy.

Fancy N'Doye and Ings too. Lots to choose from, will be hard to get the right one

Yeah Gomis would be my pick but no money itb.

I might even keep Kane and do Skrtel to Kolarov. Other option is 4 pointer, Ozil and Kane to Young and Gomis/Lukaku

I'm less keen on a 4pt in the final gameweek as it has to pay off there and then. Which means if a striker is involved you need them to score two goals to make it worthwhile.

Also this week its time to fiinally play my bench players that keep getting me points on the bench - yes Geoff Cameron I'm looking at you!

You know you're not going to win this year now, so time for the 16pt hit flair run to see what you can pull off!

What's the worst that can happen?

Not heard much about his injury recently but thought I read that playing with an injection isn't making it worse so no reason it can't happen again and rest over the summer.

Thought about this but I think most will/should hold. At least with Kane you will get 90 mins. Anyone holding Giroud, Sanchez etc should look at replacing them instead as they will almost certainly get limited or no minutes should 3rd be wrapped up. Taking hits on last day of season is stupid as you only have the one game for the risk to pay off.

For what its worth the two moves I have thought of are Giroud > Bentekke or Kane > Ulloa as you have mentioned above.

P.S I look forward to hearing Mark pee his pants talking about Mane tonight

Since it's such a lottery, I would say it's actually a bad week to make a switch. He's still had chances over his barren spell and, to extend the metaphor a bit more, he's buying plenty of tickets to the lottery! The others are definitely punts... that's for sure.

I want to punt on a striker but since I have 3 Arsenal mids and a bench which could be benched ( Baird and Bruce) in addition to the upcoming FA cup final, will shift out one of Rams or Caz for Young probably.

If I follow the mavericks above advice and take a hit then giroud and Kane out for Gomis and Lukaku is an option. Would need a goal fest from both though and Kane and Giroud to maintain their poor form.

I think he's switched that to last 10 matches to provide end of season form over the summer.

You need shots in the box sorted by last four matches or four gameweeks to get a better indication of his form for gwk 38.

I think we're being too harsh on kane. He's look threatening recently, more so than aguero did in his barren spell but most people stuck with aguero!

It's also worth noting that a lot of options seem to suffering for a form drop (vardy for example).
Maybe it's just this time of the season...

Kane is stinking up my team, but I want to get Hazard in for Coutinho and I'm not taking a hit to swap strikers for a one-week punt, so it's looking like he will stink up GW38 as well.

I am shifting graham for lukaku, and bringing in brady for either ramsey or cazorla to fund that move.

Fancy lukaku greediness and form. And a brady freekick to give hull survival hope.

I'm keeping Kane just because he's on penalties, but I do need a Defoe replacement.
Would like Costa but I can't afford him and he's no longer within distance of getting the golden boot even with a rout vs Sunderland. Will probably get Lukaku.

How to protect 15pts in my ML.Current squad:

    Ospina
    Skrtel Ivan Pva
    Coutinho Silva Hazard Sanchez
    Vardy Giroud Benteke

    Subs: Davis, Sterling, Dawson, Berty

2FT...0 ITB. Which transfer would you suggest?

    1) Giroud + Sterling > Aguero + King
    2) Sterling + Dawson > Mane + Schlupp

Tempting to choose option 1 since all my rivals got Kun. Help!

I knew tonight's game would be important for my team as I have 3 Chelsea (Terry, Hazard, Cesc) but I didn't realise quite how significant it could be in the OR.

1650 managers in the top 10k transferred Eden Hazard out this week and 2820 don't have him in their team (a few have him benched). That makes him something of a differential. And what are those managers going to do next week? Use a FT or take a hit to bring him back?

Fabregas is a big differential of course, 860 in the top 10k transferred him out and he is only in 590 teams. Managers without him will be less worried but there is no doubt that a good score from him would cause a big swing for those that have him. But will he play?

On average, top 10k managers only have 2 Chelsea players now. Those with 3 should gain ground tonight, but by how much? With 10 to play I kind of feel that I won't know how my GW is panning out until after the game.

Sure but that doesn't affect me as I have 6 DGW players.

I think the Arsenal-Sunderland game will be swings and roundabouts in the top 10k according to the specific Arsenal players that do or don't do well mainly. Everyone in the top 10k will have 3 Arsenal and most will have 1-2 Sunderland.

I concur. Don't understand why some people think of Hazard as a must for GW38.

The biggest haul that he had all season was 1+1 (twice), and on all the other weeks he didn't get more than 1 goal or assist. Sure he was reliable, but not explosive at all.

I don't know why I would suddenly be worried about not having him in a single particular match where he plays without any motivation against a very motivated side. A goal from him would certainly be bad news, but hardly the end of the world and anything more than a goal is very unlikely given his performance throughout the season.

          1. Eden is the top scoring player in the game and has scored 9+ points on 11 occasions this season.

          2. Chelsea have a lot to play for. They will be at home with a noisy crowd in high spirits prior to the PL Trophy presentation and all the shackles of needing points gone. For a lot of players (Eden included) it will be their first PL title. The mood will be very high. I wouldn't bet against a big scoreline.

Chance of both Hull and Newcastle winning? 10% maybe? Sunderland are probably already safe although that's not mathematically certain of course.

It's a realistic scenario, can definitely imagine it happening. After all, Hull and Newcastle are playing at home.
Don't know why Sunderland would hope that their rivals don't win rather than give 100% to get a point that they need.

I'm not saying they won't give 100% but human beings are affected by their semi-conscious whether you like it or not - that's one of the most important premises of sports psychology.

If Sunderland know "at the back of their minds" that they are probably safe it means they are not "on dangerous ground" (to quote Sun Tzu) in the same way that Hull are. Because Hull players and staff can have no ambivalence - fail to win and they are relegated.

One can only speculate how much effort Chelsea will put into that game. I can't think of many thrashings by early champions, just take a look at Bayern, year after year they become bizarre after they secure their title. And Chelsea didn't look like thrashing anyone for quite a while.

And my point is that even if Hazard gets his 12th 9+ haul this week, it doesn't mean that the player you sold him for won't get more. It's almost impossible to find a replacement that would match Hazard's point tally over a certain spell (therefore, he was a must have during the season), but he is not a must have in any particular gameweek because he is not explosive enough (especially in the one where his motivation is in question and the opponents will give their 100%).

Anyway, I'm absolutely chilled about not having him.

Good. My OP was only reflecting on the fact that he has become something of a differential. Whether he's a good or bad one remains to be seen. 😀

Well, your OP kind of implied that he is a differential this GW and everybody would be rushing to bring him back for the next one:
"And what are those managers going to do next week? Use a FT or take a hit to bring him back?"

                That's not the case 😉

And I just wanted to see if this is based purely on the speculation that Chelsea will want to thrash their opponents on the day of celebration or if there is something else behind that that I've missed.

Anything from Hazard or Ivanovic will go along way to off setting the ground I lost by not having Silva this gameweek.

Of course if neither play - which is highly unlikely given Mourinho's comments - then I instantly get 18 pts into my squad thanks to another week of a high scoring bench.

      Good piece.

I have Terry and Ivan and agonised before benching Schlupp (had PVA as well).

Is it not fairly certain that apart from those two, all the big hitters are getting a rest this week?

Not according to Jose's press conference last Friday.

One thing that people don't seem to appreciate is that when Jose says "will play" about youngsters it doesn't mean "will start".

Mourinho said he would play some youngsters in the "dead" CL group stage games after having qualified. He did, but off the bench - Solanke and Ake against Maribor and L-Cheek against Lisbon. No youngsters started.

I imagine Loftus-Cheek and Ake may start tonight, as an outside bet maybe Christensen too. The others (Izzy Brown, Solanke, probably Christensen) are more likely to come off the bench I think.

Hmmm, that is true, but would that have had more to do with momentum? Wanting to keep on winning at that time with all to play for?

I think that you are probably right but would not surprise me to see Hazard and Fab on the bench.

Next week will be a cracking game though, particularly if Sunderland have anything to play for...

Yes, fair point, momentum may have played a part. But Mourinho is a conservative manager and he tends to ease youth in gradually.

The 3 youth players who have already started games for Chelsea are L-Cheek, Christensen, Ake. Brown I don't think has ever even appeared as a sub and I can't see him starting until he has come off the bench a couple of times.

We'll see, only a few hours and we'll know. 🙂

In my experience chasing the top 10k the differentials really need to break at no more than 65-70%, so Hazard could appear to be more impactful on here than he might actually be within or without the top 10k. Fabregas tonight is the real star for you IMO.

How much do we think Arsenal really want 2nd place? If they win against Sunderland, 3rd place is guaranteed but do they try to clinch 2nd place and hope for a City slip? If Arsenal don't win, then of course they will play their strongest team in GW 38 as 3rd is not yet guaranteed.

He will regularly get tough draws with this rank (will drop significantly even more if he doesn't win RG). Plus clay season is over and even at his best, his record in grass and quick hard courts isn't that impressive. Certainly not enough to beat Federer or Djokovic. It will be a very tough season for him.

I can see Nishikori possibly winning a slam in the future but you have to take in account he's already 25 so he is already in his prime and arguably at his peak.
I see Raonic as being super consistent but I don't think he has a good enough return to win a major and the footwork.

It's him (for Ameobi and bench Kane), Gomis or Terry/Kolarov for me.

Can't see them scoring big and definitely avoiding Newcastle. Have a 15 point deficit to claw back

    Season over for me now.
Mane to Larsson instead of Haidara to PVA was probably a big mistake and definately didn't work.
Can't get a rank worth talking about and both my mini leagues sown up so what's the point?
What should I do to reignite the fire or just reload next season?

Saints bot exactly been prolific and had to use a free. Was worth a gamble. The big mistake was not getting PVA instead

Why did you have to use a free? I didn't

And the big mistake was clearly selling Mane

Didn't see the need to save. No one could have predicted 3 min hatty. I stand by that decision it was not doing PVA instead that was poor

Sorry mate but Mane > Larsson was an absolute shocker today or last week.

Didn't need to predict a 3 minute hat trick but easy enough to predict Mane would outscore Larsson, even with 2 games

Saints been very average villa needed the win. Easy in hindsight but Larsson 4pts for turning up made it worth it. Not gonna get swayed by hindsight

Fair enough. I was on Mane AGS so was confident enough in a goal. Obviously didn't foresee the craziness that followed!

Mane had to do something that game to beat Larsson just for tuning up. Course it was an ok move, as I said it was poor not doing PVA just so I could gamble on Ryan Taylor

Sky Game opened July 3rd last year. With the league starting a week sooner this time around it could be even sooner than that this time.

Only a month and half ish to wait then before tinkering non stop can commence!

I'm on holiday until mid July thank God! I can't believe my post got hot topic-ed earlier, it was only posting my gw1 team from this season.
