2015/16 Fixture Analysis – A Guide to Rotation

With the Premier League fixture announcement signalling the start of the 2015/16 season, we’re stepping up our preparations ahead of the new campaign.

Fantasy managers have wasted little time in dissecting the schedule to draw up the most efficient rotation options for those teams that are likely to supply us with budget-friendly options.

While many members of the community are aware of such a concept – recent posts by Portsmouth Bubblejet and The Blue of Leicester go into detail – we begin our series of articles on fixture rotation with a look at the basics involved, by delving into last season’s data for examples.

THE CONCEPT

Fixture rotation only applies to squad-based Fantasy games and is utilised best with goalkeepers and defenders. At its most basic level, the principle is simply finding a pair of cut-price players whose home and away matches dovetail perfectly, allowing us to select the home option each time and benching the other player. Our rotation policies normally have us seeking out budget pairings – mainly because most will baulk at the idea of benching an asset in or above the mid-price value bracket.

Those playing starting XI-only games such as Sky Sports or The Sun won’t need to worry about such strategies, but for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers or players of the Ultimate FPL game, fixture rotation can be a significant part of our preparation and provide one of the keys to success. Shuffling resources at the back and selecting cut-price regulars with guaranteed pitch time allows us to free up funds for heavy investment at the sharp end of our squads.

Last season, West Ham provided a good example of the benefits of a rotation pairing, with seven of their nine clean sheets coming at Upton Park. The Hammers conceded just 18 goals in front of their own fans, the sixth best home defence last term behind Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Southampton. On the road, however, it was a completely different story, conceding 29 times, making the West Ham rearguard the joint-sixth worst backline on their travels, with even relegated Hull faring better, letting in only 27 goals.

On the other hand, the performances of Swansea and West Brom’s defences went against the trend. Seven of the Swans’ 13 clean sheets came on their travels, while eight of the Baggies’ 16 shut-outs arrived on the road, highlighting their fixture-proof appeal.

Those statistics are significant in that they reinforce some of the frustration involved in rigidly stick to home and away rotation. While we endeavour to find budget options with friendly home fixtures, it is worth remembering that some sides fare better defensively away from home, particularly those who like to get men behind the ball and counter-attack.

Nonetheless, given that all but three teams conceded more goals on the road than in front of their own fans in 2014/15 (West Brom, Palace and Sunderland were the outliers), it’s easy to see why backing the home defence is the default stance. Developing from that, to consider fixture difficulty, is the way to go in order to make your rotation pairings more robust.

Home and Away Rotation

The most obvious rotation pairings are created as a result of geographical proximity and the need to spread police resourcing. Arsenal/Tottenham, Man United/Man City, Aston Villa/West Brom and Newcastle/Sunderland are examples of neighbours who rotate perfectly home and away over any given season. The other pairings are sometimes less obvious. We’ve listed these and this season’s “couples”, in the table below:

Manchester CityManchester United
Manchester UnitedManchester City

These relationships can provide the foundation for any rotation strategy, although, as we’ve mentioned, it pays to look beyond the simple concept of home and away rotation and start considering fixture difficulty to see whether even stronger rotation pairings begin to present themselves.

Start With the Stoppers

Traditionally, the goalkeeping spots have been the obvious starting point for rotation. This is compounded by the fact that FPL managers tend to overlook the option of the expensive “one-stop shop” options in goal, seeking out mid-price and budget solutions that can perhaps work in tandem.

The FPL scoring system fuels this tactic. While clean sheets are the bread and butter of goalkeepers in most Fantasy games, the FPL’s decision to award an extra point for every three saves is crucial to our thinking when assessing our preferred stoppers. Sunderland’s Costel Pantilimon, for example, earned a total of 29 extra points from saves alone and delivered at least one save point in 18 of his 28 league appearances last season.

Assured pitch time is another factor that promotes the use of rotation options in goal: barring unfortunate injuries, there is every chance of forming a rotation pairing that can see us through a long period of the season.

Three of the four players to feature in every minute of the 2013/14 season were stoppers – Brad Guzan, Simon Mignolet and John Ruddy. While only one (Burnley’s Tom Heaton) of the five players to do the same last term was a keeper, though that was largely due to injuries to the likes of Fraser Forster, Ben Foster and Kasper Schmeichel. The chances of goalkeepers being rested and rotated is significantly reduced, while the chances of a keeper being subbed off due to a tactical adjustment are slim-to-none.

Immediately, FPL managers will be considering a budget rotation pairing that could exploit the Bournemouth/Watford home and away relationship listed in our table above. Both teams should offer up 4.5 first choice options and both will surely guarantee ample save point returns to compensate for the perceived lack of clean sheets.

Move up the brackets and there are other strong couples that stand out – Swansea and Leicester will offer up keepers for a combined price of around 10.0 that will rotate home and away, while the Aston Villa/West Brom, Southampton/Norwich and the old chestnut that is Sunderland/Newcastle will also present temptations: again, pairing from those teams are likely to come in around the 10.0 mark.

While we’ve talked up the strategy of rotating keepers, it’s worth noting that there is an alternative approach that has proved fruitful in recent seasons: the option of selecting a single team and backing both first choice and reserve stoppers.

Already there is much discussion on the solution presented by Tony Pulis’ West Brom, with the Ben Foster/Boaz Myhill option a clear stand out route. A recent community article by Kompany Man outlined the appeal of this particular strategy. Southampton’s roster and pricing, in the light of Frazer Forster’s long-term injury, will also be of interest in this respect.

THE CASE FOR THE DEFENCE

In any given season, there will always be cut-price defenders who perform way beyond their initial valuation. Swansea’s Neil Taylor started with a 4.5 price tag last season due to the fact Ben Davies had established himself as the Swans’ first-choice left-back during 2013/14. Davies’ subsequent move to Tottenham on July 23 last year – significantly after the launch of the FPL game – enabled Taylor to find a place in Garry Monk’s starting XI and become a strong Fantasy asset. The Welsh international served up three assists, 13 clean sheets and four bonus points in 34 appearances, collecting 109 points and finishing the season valued at 4.8 in FPL.

Leicester’s Wes Morgan was another to bely his 4.5 price tag, particularly during the second half of last season. The centre-half scored twice, provided two assists, registered 10 shut-outs and collected eight bonus points, accruing a total of 112 points. He ended the campaign ranked fifth among defenders for value, behind only John Terry, Joleon Lescott, Kieran Trippier and Phil Jagielka.

Before deciding on goalkeeper pairings, it is vital to also consider what’s on offer from their respective defences. While you may decide that budget and mid-price keepers is the way to go, there may be defensive options in those defences that have stronger appeal, offering a semblance of attacking threat for a similar price point.

For example, although Kasper Schmeichel will be sought after following Leicester’s incredible end to the campaign, new left wing-back Christian Fuchs looks one to monitor – the Austria captain scored eight goals and bagged 30 assists in 136 matches during his time with Schalke and could be handed a wing-back berth on the left of a 3-4-1-2 set-up.

In many ways, it’s best to settle on your defensive selections first: find those who can fit a rotation strategy who may also offer up the potential of attacking returns. At that point, revisit the goalkeeping spots and scan the coverage options that remain.

Two, Three and Four-Way Rotation

While our 15-man FPL squads comprise of five defenders, the vast majority of Fantasy managers favour a three-man backline. Some prefer to plan a little more elaborately – utilising a variety of approaches including two, three and even four-way rotation in accordance with each team’s schedule.

Initially, though, selecting the correct defensive options beyond a two-man rotation plan carries a degree of risk as Premier League squads settle down and first-choice XI remain in flux.

Planning in Gameweek one and implementing a strategy that’s designed to be in place beyond Christmas can prove a futile exercise. A two-way rotation with a pair of certain first choice starters may have some legs, as soon as you build in three or even four options into that rotation, you’re increasing the chance that this scheme will break down. Even without injuries and suspensions, new budget options may emerge that cause you to go back to the drawing board out of choice.

For example, the 4.5-priced Maya Yoshida started Southampton’s first three matches last season, but following the addition of Toby Alderweireld at the end of the transfer window, the Japanese international would feature in the first XI in just one of the Saints’ subsequent nine matches.

Whether it’s a change of manager, a late move in the transfer window, an unfortunate injury to a first-team rival or a shift in the pecking order, all our best-laid plans can be quickly undone – there are nearly always one or two budget defensive options that take us by surprise and emerge as favourites to disrupt our starting squads.

Initially, it’s often best to restrict rotation to pairs of players, lessening the chances that the tactic will breakdown. It’s worth considering planning for up to 12 Gameweeks, ensuring that you give yourself room for flexibility and perhaps planning for how your pairing can be broken up and improved after a given point.

ATTACKING ROTATION

Typically, midfield or forward rotation is far trickier to achieve and less fruitful when it comes to balancing the books. The player list rarely affords us the option of a genuine Fantasy midfield force under 5.0 in FPL – although last season did throw up some success stories in the budget price range, with Burnley’s George Boyd, valued at 4.5 initially, garnering 110 points, while the likes of Ki Sung-yeung, Jack Colback and Steven N’Zonzi, who all started out at 5.0, comfortably broke the 100-point barrier.

For those favouring a 3-5-2 over a 3-4-3 formation, alternating two midfielders and a cheap third striker – picking two of the trio from one week to the next – could be an option to explore. Predicting attacking returns can prove far more frustrating and makes the idea of benching these assets a riskier tactic, though.

During 2013/14, Cardiff’s Frazier Campbell was the only forward with a starting price of 5.5 or less to manage more than 100 points. Last season, however, four sub-6.0 strikers (Harry Kane, Saido Berahino, Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy) managed that feat, highlighting the lack of certainty that comes with benching a forward. Kane’s 18-point haul against Chelsea on New Year’s Day – his highest of the season – was a perfect example. Many owners were burned after opting to keep the Spurs strike on the bench due to the Blues’ perceived resilience.

When you consider that 14 sub-6.0 defenders produced 100+ points last season, there is less margin for error when relying on cheap attackers. At times, rotating a third striker with a fifth midfielder can be a thankless task but, even so, if you can get attacking rotation working for you, the funds liberated by two or three effective budget options can make the difference when it comes to heavy-hitter selections.

USING THE SEASON TICKER

As we’ve mentioned, to construct truly robust rotation pairings, we must strive to look beyond simple home and away rotation and delve into the midsts of fixture difficulty. Thankfully, we present you with a useful tool to aid the process.

Hot on the heels of the fixture announcement, our Season Ticker has been updated accordingly. The first six fixtures for all clubs are listed in the sidebar, though members can expand or restrict this by using the plus or minus buttons at the top right of the ticker. They can also view this in accordance with each team’s overall potential as well as by clean sheet and attacking prospects, sorting by difficulty as they go along.

Another of the useful features offered by the members version is the ability to drag and drop rows, moving teams up and down the ticker to help identify rotation pairings – already, there are some noticeable couples over the first few matches that appear to offer potential.

Taking a look at the schedules, Norwich’s first six home matches are pretty favourable, while Bournemouth only face one of last season’s top six in their first seven encounters at Goldsands Stadium. Sunderland, Aston Villa and Watford have three strong home matches in the first four fixtures in front of their own fans, making finding rotation partners for these sides a priority.

An Aston Villa and Watford partnership would result in nine eye-catching home fixtures in the first 11 (WBA, SOU, SUN, SWA, WBA, CPL, STK, SWA, WHU), while Norwich and Bournemouth give us seven home matches in the opening 10 Gameweeks (AVL, STK, LEI, BOU, SUN, WAT, WBA).

These are just a two brief examples – over the next few weeks we’re going to present our guides to some of the strongest rotation pairings on offer, discussing the potential assets available when considering the keeper slots, defensive set-up and options in attacking areas.

    Rotation Dos and Don'ts

What are your top tips for getting the most out of a rotation strategy? Has it worked for you in the past? Has it also failed and in turn cost you points through benching players with away or poor fixtures?

I never rotate attacking spots, two average attackers will have the capacity to blank for weeks on end, I'd always rather have one consistent option. You could also end up benching points constantly (like you with Puncheon).

It has been more reliable with defenders, but I'd only plan on doing it early in the season with low TV. It does have problems, as I found by having Caulker and Bruce last season - pinpointing a solid bargain defence is tricky. This season I'll try to avoid having more than one real bargain basement defender, and try to avoid unknown quantities.

If theres a good rotation then dont be scared on tripling. I also remember Tosey went with 3 Lpool 2 seasons back from Oct and got an unreal amount of points with the remaining 3 defenders rotating nicely into the space

I´m curious how his strategy correlates with not being able to utilize the attackers since you´d guess if defenders are keeping CS´s someone is scoring upfront, but on the other hand a guaranteed minimum of 17points(1 YC average) from 3 players must be a better ratio than owning, say, 2 defenders and and attacker who could often return 2 or 3 points only..

Rotating keepers are sometimes problematic as they could get a lot of save points against a tougher opponent (eg. Pantillimon).

Defenders in the £4-4.5m range are good to rotate as you're pretty much playing them for their cleansheet potential.

I'd never rotate an attacking player unless a 3-5-2 is viable.

Yeah. Too hard to predict week in week out.

Tried and failed so many times.

I do like to have a rotating defenders on the bench tho - so the cheapies are home/away if needed.

No more goalkeeper rotation for me.. One goalkeeper with decent fixtures and a 4.0 as backup and rely on save points and unexpected away clean sheets to make up the points.

With my albeit limited experience, mine would probably be:

Wary of rotating keepers due to the save points factor (plus I always seemed to pick wrongly from Pants/Heaton and Pants/Guzan last year).

Don't look too far ahead (unless rotating keepers I suppose). Prefer looking at 6-8 week blocks, rather than half a season. For example I have this between Bournmouth and West Ham penciled in for the first 8 gameweeks: AVL LEI BOR LEI NEW SUN NOR WAT.

This also helps avoid 'stk', 'sot' and 'cpy' (these are not good fixtures in a rotation), and getting too tied down to a long term strategy.

Home is better, ideally a H/A rotation.

I think my starting template in terms of rotation will be:

Two Rotating cheap Kepers (no more than 9.5 total)
Chelsea defender, Decent nailed defender, two 4.5 rotating defenders, one filthy 4m bench punt
Four good midfielders, one filthy 4.5 bench punt
Top striker, Moderate striker, cheap nailed striker with best fixtures

I always mess up offensive rotations, if I'm smart, this will be my first season without it.

Defensive rotations on the other hand, love it. A good set up always gives me a great output, even with the likes of Steven Caulker. Also, I love tinkering with the ticker trying to maxmise the amount of blue, wouldn't enjoy this game as much without it.

defensive rotations are great, Especially goalkeepers, as you have a 50/50 choice and most times it is clear cut.

Defenders fall into the middle ground, where you have a mix (last season Chelsea were a constant, whereas rotating Sunderland/Newcastle went well for me)

Attackers you just bench points, rather a strong front 7 and bench fodder then a strong front 6 and two inconsistent players (see Siggy)

Simply DON'T for me, at all. I have spent many an hour on rotation spreadsheets in previous seasons but last season I didn't bother and it made a huge difference to my season, finishing with my best rank ever by quite some way.

More money in your starting XI is the main thing I think, over 38 games it will make a difference having an extra 1m or so to spend. You don't have the bench headaches and you swap players out on form if they aren't making the grade.

In defence clean sheets are very unpredictable, if you think how hard it is to pick one defender who will go on a run of clean sheets then the chances of picking two good cheap defenders and getting their clean sheet points to dovetail exactly - its a pipe dream. Something like 40% of clean sheets come away from home so home/away rotations always look a lot better on paper than the actual reality.

Rotating attackers is worse still, I think having a permasub and a strong attacking 7 is easier to 'manage'. If they are players worth keeping based on form then you have to play them every week or its just a matter of time before you get a double digit haul staring at you from your bench. I'm guilty in the past of persisting with a cheap rotation pair because of fixtures and it just caused a lot of damage to my ranking.

    Morning everyone!

How's it going on this fine summer day? 🙂

Here are a few interesting attacking stats for 'heavy hitter' defenders last season:

    Ivanovic - 8 goals, 5 assists

    Terry - 8 goals, 2 assists

    Baines - 4 goals, 13 assists

    By comparison:

    Ramos - 8 goals, 1 assist

Ramos certainly has goal threat and I can see him being priced quite highly if the deal goes through, between £6-7m.

    What do you all think?

Okay, good point. Although I maintain that playing next to Marcelo would be a lot more difficult than playing next to Carvajal.

Sure, but the difference is massive: Varane 1 yellow card, 0.4 fouls/match; Ramos 12 yellow cards, 1.6 fouls/match. It's of course not only Ramos being a hot head, it's also Varane being a very assured and calm defender. Honestly, I knew he would not have too many fouls on his account, but was surprised when I checked these stats. Very impressive.

he'll probably come in at 6.5m, which is likely to be too much for me. 6m I'd snap him up for his goal threat. But chelsea will just keep more clean sheets, it's as simple as that.

      and terry rarely gets booked.

Why do we think it's a bad option to have South American players going into the new season?

Looking at past tournaments, they have played at the start of the season

If anything, they'd be more match fit and only need the pre-season fixtures to accustom to any tactical changes in team style?

Judging by the way Sanchez is playing for Chile, he's the first name on my team if still classed as a midfielder

1 goal 1 assist, which doen't look good but his performance has been impecable

I think there are far bigger issues regarding Sanchez's viability as an FPL option than the Copa America. When everyone was fit his scoring was absolutely appalling. And with potentially another midfielder and striker joining I can't see him being anywhere near as pivotal to their attack as he was during the middle of last season.

    Cresswell extends stay
    Football
    Posted at 10:32
West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell has signed a new five-year contract.

The left-back, who moved to Upton Park from Ipswich in 2014, was the Hammers' player of the year as they finished 12th in the Premier League last season.

The 25-year-old's new deal has the option for a further two-year extension when it expires in 2020.

"It's exciting times for me to pen a new deal at West Ham," he said. "Hopefully a few more faces will come in and we'll have a good year."

    Repost from yesterday.
There are some players who have been able to succeed at each level, even when coming from way down in the Doldrums. Ricky Lambert was a great example and Ritchie will be another.

-League 2 player of the season in 2012/13 season. 12 goals, 11 assists all comp. 45 apps
-League 1 player of the season in 2013/14 season. 9 goals 4 assists all comp. 31 apps
-In Championship team of the season 2014/15. 16 goals, 19 assists all comp. 47 apps.

I'm pretty darn sure he will continue his very consistent rise, and if Bournemouth do go down, he will be surely snapped up by a big club, he is now 25 and hitting prime.

Atsu was POTY at Vitesse in Eredivise at age 21 in his breakthrough season. He was then very impressive at the World Cup.

Last season Everton treated him lousily, while Martinez was implying he wasn't good enough he went to ACON and was voted Player of the Tournament.

When he gets regular starts (which he will at Bournemouth) he'll do really well.

I'm sure Martinez wasn't not playing him for any other reason than thinking he wasn't good enough. He never performed in the limited time he got on the pitch, and obviously didn't convince in training. Maybe he just can't perform at PL level?

Yes. Other than Martinez favouring his own players I can't explain that either. Maybe Martinez is an idiot.

ACON included players like Bony, Toure, Appiah, Ayew, Doumbia, Aurier and Bolasie. But Atsu was "Player of the Tournament". He then returned to his place on the Everton bench.

When he gets regular play you will see.

I'm new to this site. And by all your standards I'm not the best. I finished a measley 177,009 last season. I started off With Balotelli and Riviere up front. Please laugh now! Anyway, i started to think tactically and ended up with Kane and Austin up front and moved from the 1 million mark into the top 200,000. I've never really took FPL serious, but this season I want to. Hence when I've signed up here.
    Any tips?

My first tip would be to avoid Balotelli and Riviere from now on! 😉

I'm not sure there are any hard rules to abide by, but check out other peoples teams, read some articles and ask a few questions once prices are out, and people will no doubt be happy to help. 🙂

Nothing to be ashamed with that

This is my 4th year on FFS and I think I went with Balotelli near the start too 😡

Discussion on here usually forms a template team from time to time and it's worth looking at these players (especially if they're high ownership players)

The articles are worth reading and a lot of the comments posted (check for hot topics)

Other than that welcome and enjoy!

Yes, but still yet to go Southampton Arms. I finally have a Friday off so me lady has booked the day off and we'll spend it in Hampstead and Highgate. So I'll finally get to try one from there.
The Anglesea Arms is where I work, my local our rival, the similarly name Andover Arms. Check it out on TripAdvisor. Its gone an unbelievable rank.

You see other addicts online; some of them don’t even know they’re junkies yet. You weep for them. You are more realistic, you know that this is not normal behaviour. “It’s fine, it’s perfectly common to be asking a group of strangers whether I should transfer in Hector Bellerin at 3am”. Your heart bleeds; they can’t see the truth. You want them to get out now, to tell them there’s still a chance, but you know it’s too late. They have been bitten, and you are a Fantasy Football zombie watching them transform.

That will be Nick J before he knows it, he'll be up in the middle of the night doing comparisons of Roberto Firmino and Dimitri Payet's stats in foreign leagues, desperately trying to collate a table of evidence to show that imports can succeed over here.

This is our chance to help him before he's sucked in.

Has anyone ever tried to empirically test the points that'd have been won in a particular season through rotating say two 4.5-5.0 keepers vs. playing a single say 6.0 keeper every week & benching a 4.0 backup?.

      Have a look.
Payet can also be expected to take the majority of set-pieces and corners, given his proficiency from dead-ball situations – this should also be to Downing’s detriment, should he stay at Upton Park.

Because he started to gradually lose his starting spot to Gimenez already last season and would very likely be 3rd choice CB next season. He's overrated and also already 30-year-old, so it's not as if he had his career ahead of him.

My guess is July 13th for opening this year. This is the due date for our second baby and I'm envisioning some kind of ridiculous moment when I notice FPL has opened when I really shouldn't be looking.

Uefa has now officially modified FFP:

"The updated financial fair play (FFP) regulations will address situations where clubs have undergone a recent business restructuring or takeover and occasions where clubs wish to invest sustainably within the spirit and essence of FFP. Under these circumstances, club monitoring will increase and broaden in scope through the application of rigorous conditions.

The new amendments will take into account disadvantages faced by clubs due to sudden economic shocks or severe market structural deficiencies within its operating region. There is also a strengthening of the overdue payables criteria and new determination of related parties. All of these enhancements will further encourage responsible investors and stakeholders to continue to contribute to the strong and healthy growth of club football in Europe."

Don't yet know what this means _exactly_, but Platini says it's basically moving from a period of austerity to a period encouraging investing, so this should mean that City, PSG and the newly rich Milanese clubs should be able to compete with the old money.

'invest sustainably within the spirit and essence of FFP' - presumably this would be good news for clubs like Southampton who have invested £30-£40m in their training facilities? 😀

I've been saying it all the time: you have money and can spend it, now even more than before. But I'd suppose this opens more arguments from healthy long term plans and harsh financial conditions for heavy spending clubs like Inter, PSG and City.

E.g. PSG ("have undergone a recent business... takeover") can use the combination of, not only having invested in training facilities and youth academies, but also the heavy French taxation ("market structural deficiencies within its operating region") and their well sustainable future plans achievable by growth ("wish to invest sustainably") to form an argument for being allowed to spend over their income _now_ ("encourage responsible investors and stakeholders to continue to contribute to the... growth of club football").

I don't think it's necessarily good for them, however, they've got a very good youth academy and would do better by relying on it and spending less money on transfers. I may be biased, because as a moneyball man, I'm not a fan of the player policy of clubs like PSG and City anyway.

I think FFP just needs to be in place to stop clubs going bust. There's nothing worse than local businesses getting 5p in the £1 for what they are owed when clubs go into administration (this happened with my club Ipswich). If a club has a rich owner who is happy to invest their own money in the club then I don't see why this should be penalised.

Fully agree with this. They're really controlling the wrong thing. They should control clubs from getting indebted and so, but if somebody wants to pour money in football, the only problem I can see with it is money laundering, which should be an issue investigated by very different authorities.

A good Premiership striker, I'd say, is around Lukaku's level. Not an Aguero or Costa, but not a Yaya Sanogo. 10-12 is a good Premiership striker, a goal every other game would be very good.

He was for a while! It's obviously simplistic, you can't measure a striker just in goals, it's just a rough estimate.

Basically, I don't think Kane will score anywhere near as many as he did this season, and I don't think he has the game to compensate for that. I think people will get on his back at some point when they realise he's closer to Charlie Austin than Sergio Aguero.

                      Hope I'm wrong.

I think his displays towards the end of the season will be more his natural level. He'll likely hit another purple patch and score a couple or a hat trick for a few games, but I just don't believe he's THAT good.

As bad as Spurs are, their attack is still loudly better than Everton's was this season. He'll get much more and much better chances than Lukaku. If he's anywhere near as good striker, he should score rather 12-16 goals than 10-12 goals.

For anyone who hasn't got the book, this is probably the best Wikipedia page ever......

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Friday

    My favourite bit:

"Friday was marked during the game by Mark Lawrenson, who so frustrated the Cardiff forward with his close attention that Friday waited for Lawrenson to attempt a slide tackle and then kicked him in the face. After receiving a red card, Friday left the ground with the game still going on; according to legend, before leaving he broke into the Brighton dressing room and defecated in Lawrenson's kit bag"

I'm well aware that Giroud has his critics and I wholly understand why. But surely, if Arsenal do not bring in the top class striker they arguably need, which seems very possible, won't Giroud be a good pick again next season, with the creative forces behind him possibly even increasing?

Yes he will unless Walcott/Welbeck directly and regularly compete for the CF position with him - a scenario which I can't personally see happening (not regularly enough anyway).

I presume it depends on Giroud's form. I can only really see Wenger sticking with Walcott for any length of time if Giroud is really struggling, as he was at the end of the season.

This is a good point. A lot on hear tend to magically think Walcott will take over at CF but as you said, I think it was simply due to Giroud struggling.

Yes he could be an option but there is always the threat of rotation, I remember last season I started with Giroud and Sanogo started the first two games, and even though Giroud grabbed a goal in the second he came off with an ankle injury in the 90th minute...
