The Community Round Up

It’s been several weeks since the Premier League ended and our community writers and posters are getting more than a little restless, as they anxiously await the launch of player prices and the 2015/16 season. To help scratch that Fantasy Football itch, our community articles have taken a look at the promoted teams’ chances of success and also put some popular Fantasy management assumptions to the test. Meanwhile, a platter of transfer talk, as well as rotation strategies, have been on offer in our hot topics to satisfy the community’s hunger as the long wait for the start of the new season continues.

The Community Articles

For Fantasy managers like Doolittle it has already been a long enough summer break from the game they love. With just weeks to go before the expected launch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and other games, Doolittle has shared his thoughts on how the community can cope with the Fantasy management summertime blues.

A good way some of the community have found to help the summer months pass quicker is to carry out some hard analysis of the previous season’s successes and failures. The Shoe Maker has been leading the hand wringing with a look back to see how three of his Fantasy management assumptions from last summer panned out.

Red Lightning, meanwhile, has been embroiled in statistics from the last few years to assess whether there are any lessons to be learned for Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich from the 15 other teams who have been promoted since 2010.

Another of our community writers to have been passing the summer months with some impressive research is Ruth NZ, whose summer-long team-by-team analysis series won the June community article of the month vote. These were community articles in their truest form, with Ruth NZ canvassing your views to help in his analysis.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

For some, the wait for the launch of FPL is getting particularly unbearable. Daniel has been leading the impatient charge and this week cast a look back on FPL’s launch dates from the last decade.

Transfer activity is at least satisfying some craving for Fantasy information while we await the new season. Beavis has been trying to make sense of the transfer talk whirling around Old Trafford so far and pondering whether world soccer heavyweights such as Sergio Ramos and Bastian Schweinsteiger swap La Liga and Bundesliga glory for the cut and thrust of the Premier League?

At least Fantasy managers have the fixtures and the ability to create rotation spreadsheets for comfort. In our discussion on rotation, Doolittle warned of the pitfalls of rotating attackers, while for Jaffalicious, keeper rotation is potentially full of hazards and missed points.

Pondering potential rule changes to FPL are helping to pass the time for many. Palace Ash launched this discussion based on some of his dream alterations, while Pasqualinho sparked a debate as to whether FPL should limit the number of free transfers.

Elsewhere, Y€$, is occupying his time by assessing the best formation to use next season. He favours a three-man defence, while RuthNZ joined the discussion to propose playing four at the back.

Another popular past time for the impatient Fantasy manager is mulling over the prospects of each team for the campaign ahead. Accounting for Chris’s look at under and over-achieving teams next season proved particularly controversial when the issue of Southampton’s forthcoming campaign cropped up.

Can West Ham be among next season’s over-achievers? Rukawa certainly thinks so, thanks to their busy summer in the transfer market already. Hammers fan Doosra was among those to join in his discussion on their chances.

For the last part of the previous season at least, Leicester were one of 2014/15’s over-achievers. The Foxes scramble to survival was not enough to ensure their manager Nigel Pearson remained in post, though, after he was surprisingly sacked in midweek. What does 2015/16 have in store for the midlands side? If their new recruits like Shinji Okazaki can replicate their form in other European leagues they may just survive another day. Here our resident Bundesliga expert Portsmouth Bubblejet was on hand to reveal more about the Japanese international, who has scored 37 goals since he first arrived in Germany in 2011.

The Members Tables

KyleShaughnessy has been taking an in-depth look at the second half of the season defensive statistics of Premier League sides in his latest table. Errors and goal attempts conceded are among the figures he focuses on.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Killian Long has won the FFScout league in the UEFA U21 Championships game and came 21st overall. Aguero was second, while Tobias took third place closely followed by Roscola in fourth.

Is it ok to use wet tissue to clean black shoes instead of polish? It won't damage the shoes will it? Reason being polish makes them too shiny and wet tissue is just enough. And I also can't be bothered to buy some polish. Thanks in advance

Sounds safe enough to me, especially if you have a dry tissue handy for immediate drying of parts you've just scrubbed with the wet tissue, though not even sure you'd need to do that. Just something I might do. And have an upvote.

Will be firing up the blog in a week or two, in the meantime here is a link to the structure article written before the start of last season. Allows for a strong starting squad

A picture is worth a thousand words , let others waffle about 442 etc. Just take a good look at the screenshot and appreciate just how much talent can be bought even with only 100m

The only problem with that structure imo is overkill in the 4m defender category. 3 starting players at that basement price are hard to come by and you could end up with transfers waiting to happen if they aren't first choice. Then its extremely difficult to shift them unless you have money in the bank.

Nice article. Not too complicated and exactly the strategy i follow every season. I can't get myself to shift to 3-5-2 because i am always more comfortable captaining the man furthest up the pitch. The upside might be lower but the consistency is more.

352 is ok but needs more money to work properly, a switch too it after xmas is quite possible, but try it with only 100k and it unlikely to work for long

Kane is an example of where last years managers could go wrong, he was a one off, but i bet it wont stop people thinking they can get away with a cheap strikeforce again

Yeah, from my experience a cheap strike force rarely works. They don't normally tend to have much consistency. The only way for it to work I think would be to rotate cheap strikers with transfers and have lots and lots of luck in picking the right ones. But even then you will be wasting transfers that could be used elsewhere.

Yes it isnt optimal because to rotate a striker, you need someone decent to rotate them with, which means spending more than the minimum amount on your bench

I have no clue on specific players yet, although Rooney looks tempting for sure. So many transfers etc to be made yet that i prefer to keep an open mind at this stage, but Rooney could tick most of the boxes, im bullish on utd

Be careful when you say that though. Its easy to get a closed mind because of pre-season. A careful balance of last season, pre-season, transfer rumours, new additions and players leaving all have to come into play to inform our judgements.

This is where the Friday GW could be beneficial. A gamble on a player like ADM can be a bit easier as if he doesn't make the gw1 team you can see the gw2 team pre deadline and if not in that too get shot. As opposed to each week thinking will he/won't he.

If I choose him (or mata) or Rooney that's what I'll be doing.

Thats in GW2 though unfortunately. We want to get it right in GW1. Major risks must be severely limited

I do agree and ADM is a gamble but with the GW2 deadline it would in theory only be a 1 week gamble and at the likely price point he should be easy to interchange.

Same applies to mata and Rooney positioning, IF they were in gw1 selections. I think it gives potential selectors an extra little comfort blanket. Also good fixtures.

I'd rather not have to correct a mistake so early. I like to try and save a transfer and be patient with my GW1 team. There is never such a thing as a free transfer and they should be used carefully. One thing I've learned is to avoid bringing in players that are a transfer waiting to happen.

I agree with all that. A transfer is valued at 4 points whether free or not. We are fortunate to be given a value for them for any calculations.

I would never bring someone in thinking I would remove them, it would only be the additional comfort that IF what I believed (the player was nailed) wasn't true, I could at least rectify.

The plan though, is always to save the first transfer for 2 in gw3.

So i am part of a cash league this season. The pot is divided into 3

    1) Prize for top 3 overall
    2) Prize for highest scorer each GW
    3) Prize for top 3 in the H2H league

Any changes in strategy i should make or anything to keep in mind?

          I meant like how much.

Well, basically what I was going to say is it depends on the amounts involved. Ie whether or not it's worth aiming for a high score prize every few weeks. As you could almost forfeit your OR rank by building a team to win the weekly prize every couple of weeks.

I'd also check the history of the players in your league to work out your chances of winning the league. If it is mainly 'casuals' you will have some leeway in which prizes to aim for and how.

Generally speaking you're probably best off simply going for OR and seeing if you can get ahead of others in the league. Then once you've got some space between you and the others you can turn your tactics to the weekly prizes.

I probably wouldn't even think about the head to head league. Just play your game and see what happens. Only worth thinking about in the last few games if you have fixtures against people who you are competing with for a prize.

Haven't put much thought into it.

Possibly Giroud depending on price. Non of the other big options are appealing at the moment. Until Kun is ready.

Only because of the lack of other options.

Costa, now has Falcao to mess things up.
                      Kun, Copa America
Rooney, who know where he'll play. Could be an option though.
                      Kane, probably very expensive.
Sturridge, injured. If he isn't he will be.
                      Lukaku, lol

Morning lads. Here's some piece of "news" to kick the day off:

Atletico Madrid are continuing with their two-year pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla. Diego Simeone sees the playmaker as a possible replacement for Arda Turan. - Daily Fail

Could be a great signing for Atletico that if they end up losing Arda and getting him. Though I doubt Arsene will be willing to sell.

No way he would sell his most inform improved player. I think all these rumour mills at present are reporters trying to validate their job by recycling the same old stuff again and again. Don't think anyone has a clue.

Hugely disagree on this. For me he's our most overrated player. Koscielny, Coquelin, Ramsey, Özil, Alexis, and Giroud all had better seasons. Will be relegated to the bench next season imo as Arsène wants to play Ramsey and Wilshere together like he did at the start of last season. Cazorla only came into the team because of injuries.

Koscielny or Monreal then. Doubts over Bellerin with Debuchy back and though he might not start at the beginning I can see Gabriel eventually taking Mertesacker's place in the team.

That would be an awful rule change.

      Would kill the transfer market.

If you're going to restrict FTs rather spawn one every 3 games, and allow then to indefinitely accrue, with an initial balance of 5, and remove the wildcards.

Sanchez, Ivan, Silva, Costa and Kane.

Sanchez - lots of other Arsenal options e.g. Walcott, Ozil.

Ivan - Terry, Azpi, Cahill depending on prices.

      Silva - just get Aguero

      Costa - just get Haz

Kane - one good season and will now be way over priced.

    4. Twisted Saltergater

      Player / Alternative
      Hazard / Fabregas
      Aguero /
      Sanchez / Ramsey or Walcott
      Ivanovic / Terry
      Silva /
      Costa /
      Kane / Benteke or Lukaku

Premium Strikers were shocking last year, so difficult to judge who will be essential this year. I don't see ready made alternatives to Aguero and Costa, unfortunately.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 14 Years

I'm hoping that the pricing will mean the alternative to Aguero is Costa, and vice-versa. Or severe constraints if you get both.

      • 10 Years

Haz has a reputation as being a slow starter - Would be interested to see stats on that.
Aguero may be a bit weary after the Copa, but I'll be betting he starts GW1 and won't be without him if he does.
Sanchez will more likely miss a GW, as he'll only get back from holiday a week before the opening day.
Ivan doesn't have magical powers in the opening weeks, despite what some seem to believe.
Silva likely to be expensive, though I'd like have him
Costa = Lack of bonus + yc magnet much of the season. Still interesting though.
Kane... how much will he cost based on last year? 10m? Can see him struggling a bit for value at that kind of price under weight of expectations, but hope I'm wrong.

Aguero's the only one I consider essential at this point - So ridiculously explosive. But pricing might change my mind.

Plus if theo gets fit, he'll easily match sanchez on value terms (theo probably be 9.0, sanchez probably 11.5/12.0)... And possibly even point for point

At the moment, I'm not interested in Sanchez(too expensive!)/Kane(I dont like him)/Ivan(too expensive!)

      All of them

Kane - Only done it in one season so far and will have a cloud of transfer rumours hanging over his head with a potential move to United mooted.

Sanchez - Plenty of alternative attacking options at Arsenal with points likely to be spread around

Ivanovic - We shouldn't attempt to predict attacking points for defenders despite Ivans heroics at the start of the last two seasons. Its not rational to assume he can do it every season.

Silva/Aguero - I wouldn't want more than one at the start of the season, realistically we can only afford 4 big hitters and do you really want 2/4 from just one team? I think we can afford to spread the risk

      Costa/Hazard - Ditto

How much investment are west brom defenders & gk's going to get this year? It's surely a golden rule of FPL to back tony pulis defences... I'm thinking of both gk's (assuming combined price of 9.5) and a defender, plus ivan... Leaving only 3x more defender slots to fill 🙂

Excellent game, Super Rugby at its best. The Highlanders were one of the worst teams for such a long time, to turn it around under Jamie Joseph (future All Blacks coach) and win it is simply brilliant for them.
