Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Forwards

We roll out the penultimate article in our assessment of this year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening, After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders, Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders, Premium Midfielders and
Budget Forwards, we analyse the available options in the mid-price bracket up front.

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck carries a 7.5 price tag after scoring just four times in 25 appearances in his debut season at the Emirates. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott surely ahead of him in the pecking order for the lone striker role, in addition to fierce competition for the attacking midfield slots, the England international may not see enough playing time to be regarded as a genuine Fantasy prospect. Welbeck is also a slight doubt for the start of the new season with a knee injury that has taken longer to heal than expected.

Chelsea pair Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have both been priced at 7.5, though their pitch time is likely to be determined by Diego Costa’s ability to remain free from injury and suspension. Bearing in mind that Costa was restricted to just 24 starts last term, there’s certainly a chance that at least one of the pair will benefit at some point, though for now, neither looks worth gambling over, given how precious our three striker slots are. Remy could be worth considering if a mooted move to Palace or West Ham transpires, though.

Despite what was a pretty disappointing campaign last year, Romelu Lukaku appears to be one of the stronger options in the mid-price bracket. The Belgian international comes in at 8.0 this season and may benefit from only having the Premier League to focus on, having played a major role in Everton’s Europa League campaign last term. His goal conversion rate of 9.5% is a concern, however, while the Toffees tough opening schedule mean it’s only when the fixtures ease from Gameweek 11 that he may begin to feature on our radars. Nonetheless, Lukaku looks a secure option – he started 32 times last term, a tally bettered by only four other forwards, whilst he’s now scored at least ten times in all three of his seasons in the top-flight.

Over on the red half of Merseyside, summer signing Danny Ings and Mario Balotelli have been valued at 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. With Daniel Sturridge ruled out for the opening part of the season, it remains to be seen who Brendan Rodgers will opt for up front, though, after the Reds triggered Christian Benteke’s release clause at Villa. Owned by over 14% of FPL managers, Ings was fielded on the right of a front three in Liverpool’s previous friendly but with Rodgers full of options in the final third, he looks far from certain to lead the line in the season ahead. After a disappointing first year at Anfield, Balotelli looks set for the exit door if the Reds can find a buyer.

Another two forwards that could be set to leave the Premier League are Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko (7.5) and Stevan Jovetic (7.0). The Bosnian striker has been linked with a move to Roma, while former Fiorentina man Jovetic could also be set for a return to Serie A. Both look to be behind Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony in the pecking order, while latest addition Raheem Sterling can also play in various roles across the forward line. Even if Dzeko or Jovetic don’t depart this summer, it is very unlikely either will be viable Fantasy options in the forthcoming campaign.

In just 22 appearances last season, Papiss Cisse (6.5) managed to score 11 times and ended the campaign with a goal conversation rate of 24.4%, second only to Diego Costa’s 26.3%. New boss Steve McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby last year and has rolled out a 4-2-3-1 system in both matches in charges so far, suggesting a lone striker formation will be favoured. Bearing in mind that the Magpies have been heavily linked with moves for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Charlie Austin, there are still question marks over whether the injury-prone Cisse can remain at the top of the pecking order.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez are valued at 8.0 and 7.0 respectively this year and both could provide decent options over the course of the season. Despite a disappointing second half of the 2014/15 campaign, which saw him go on a 14-match scoreless run, Pelle started 37 times last term, more than any other forward, and his physical attributes as a target man should ensure he remains Ronald Koeman’s preferred choice as the lone striker. The more versatile Rodriguez still offers an option on the flanks and, after finally recovering from a year-long knee injury, will be hoping to rediscover the form that saw him net 15 times during 2013/14. Certainly, the Saints’ opening schedule, which pits them against just three of last term’s top three in the first 13 Gameweeks, could barely be kinder and both forwards are already off the mark – Rodriguez has notched twice, whilst Pelle netted in a friendly win over Groningen earlier today.

Coming in at 6.5, fellow Senegal international Mame Biram Diouf is the only Stoke forward in the mid-price category. After scoring 12 goals in the previous campaign, the former United man could be decent value if he can stave off the challenge of new signing Joselu for a starting berth as the lone striker in Mark Hughes’s 4-2-3-1. In terms of goal conversion, Diouf’s 21.4% was fourth among all forwards last year, though his versatility can go against him, with the Potters boss handing him a right flank berth on a number of occasions.

Following Wilfried Bony’s January move to City, it took Bafetimbi Gomis some time to find his best form at Swansea. The France international seemed to improve week-by-week throughout the second half of last season, though, and scored six of his seven goals in his final ten appearances. Now the clear first-choice at the Liberty, with summer signing Eder seemingly offering back-up, Gomis should thrive with the likes of Andre Ayew and Gylfi Sigurdsson providing support from midfield. Available at 7.0, the former Lyon forward – who notched against the likes of Arsenal and City last season – looks one of the more appealing and potentially most consistent options in the mid-price roster. He’s also off the mark this summer, finding the net in a 2-1 win over 1860 Munich earlier tonight.

Saido Berahino was one of last season’s success stories in the budget bracket. After scoring 14 goals, the England U21 has been handed a price hike this time around, though still sets us back a respectable 6.5. The Baggies didn’t create an awful lot of chances last season, ranking 19th out of all 20 Premier League sides for attempts on goal, with more of our Fantasy focus on their reliable defence under Tony Pulis. Nonetheless, a goal conversion rate of 16.3% illustrates how clinical the youngster is in front of goal, though, and after some difficult opening fixtures, spot-kick taker Berahino could provide a viable option as a third forward. The Baggies striker netted in his first appearance of the summer in a friendly win over Charleston Battery earlier this morning.

One of the other stand-out names in this price range is West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who comes in at 6.5. In an injury-hit campaign that restricted him to 23 appearances, Sakho still netted every 184.1 minutes – that’s sandwiched between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), for example. Providing he can steer clear of the treatment room, he should benefit from an attack-minded approach under Slaven Bilic and has four very favourable home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks. With Andy Carroll (6.5) now expected to be out until mid-October due to an ongoing knee injury, Sakho’s eye for goal could be key to ensuring Bilic’s tenure gets off to a profitable start.

Anyone considering Wilshere @6m? Or is 8.5m the minimum spend for attacking Arsenal cover?

    be as negative as possible:

    Pantilimon - Hennessey
    Azpilicueta - Williams - Huth - Francis - Martin
    Hazard - Ozil - Henderson - Ritchie - Fletcher
    Aguero - Rooney - Deeney

      Pantilimon - Sunderland are crap
      Hennessey - Doesn't even play
Azpilicueta - Luis could snatch game time
Huth - Old and Leicester can't defend for the first 6 months of the season
Francis - Bournemouth will be whipping boys
Martin - Norwich will be whipping boys
      Hazard - Slow starter
      Ozil - Doesn't score goals
Henderson - Poor away fixtures, may lose penalties
Ritchie - Unproven at PL level
      Fletcher - No attacking threat
Aguero - May miss season start, overpriced
Rooney - Looked sluggish against Club America. May get shifted back to midfield
Deeney - Unproven at PL level & tough fixtures

    DeGea (4.0)

I would usually agree and would spend that extra in the middle, but I am very happy with the midfield here. And in addition, part of the pan is the rotation between Wilson/Deeney until something else emerges.

Interesting. I'd rather plop a 4.5 keeper in there instead of DDG and pump Milner up to Mane. Also not sure about the merits of spending 5.5 on Deeney if he will be benched week in week out...maybe downgrade to someone cheaper and spend those funds elsewhere.

You could do DDG & 4.0 > Fabianski & Schmeichel for rotating keepers and then do Williams & 4.0 > Francis & Holebas for an extra rotating pair of defenders.

I like the idea of getting that rotation in there, but Williams is possibly one of my untouchables. He's a decent enough pick at 5.0m anyway, but with this season's changes to BPS he could clean up. He tops all kinds of tables for those stats.

Yeah. I'm having that debate with myself over Williams also. How about this? DDG > 5.0 (Panti?). Then you could do your 4.0 def > Morgan/Huth which rotates nicely with Williams.

Biggest concern I'd have if what if a mid priced forward catches fire. You'd need to change formations to get him in, unless you give up kun ... Which I wouldn't.

Think 3 forwards - a premium, a mid range, and a cheaper one is the way to go

Just my opinion ... Best of luck!

That is probably my chief concern.

343 has been my formation for the last few years, and worked well for me, but I feel this year is presenting an opportunity to gamble and win.

If a mid price forward exploded, I suppose it would be a case of Milner to 4.5 and Wilson/Deeney to that forward. If a premium forwards exploded it is the same but with Ozil/Depay/Walcott. It potentially commits me to transfers, but I think it is a lot less restrictive than people planning transfer such as Myhill/Hennessy out or Aguero in.

    First RMT of the season

    Cech, Hennessey
    Darmian, Cedric, PVA, Mings, Morgan
    Walcott, Fabregas, Depay, Mane, Henderson
    Rooney, Sakho, Wilson

    2.0 ITB

Wilson & Sakho have really good rotation up to GW9 so i'd be playing 3-5-2 every week.

Got the money to do Rooney & Darmian > Aguero & 5.0 def before GW4.

What good is an improved BPS for defenders/keepers with the new system when it's only contributing to a possible 1, 2 or 3 baps? Not knocking the system, just asking. Can we expect a big change in how baps are distributed from mainly attacking points to more balance for defenders/keepers?

    1. Seb Wassell
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

It won't change how bonus points are shared between attackers, midfielders and defenders (goal scorers win), but it will change how they are distributed between defenders (likely shift from FBs and ball-playing defenders to combative CBs).

      Hope that helps.

What has been your weirdest FPL captaincy? Last season alone I captained the likes of Balotelli and Jovetic, and I also captained Fonte in the week armband favourite Harry Kane scored a hat trick against Leicester. In hindsight they were stupid decisions. Has anyone else gone for armband differentials before and had it massively backfire? Is it best to always play safe with the captaincy?

I made a couple of "calculated" captaincy calls that weren't weird but were just punts that I thought would work out. Although, at the start of last season I captained Ramsey away to Leicester after he opened the season with two goals from two games. I did start the season as a casual though, so that would explain it...

    8. Reedy
      • 13 Years

I can be quite specific about this because I did a 'captaincy analysis' on my team at the end of the season.

GW5 I captained Naismith for 0pts. Cameo with a yellow card, I think.
      GW23 AJ got me 4pts.

But I had some successes too... GW7 eg; Siggy got me 20pts when Aguero would've got me 14.

Still, overall I'd have got about 30pts more over the season if I'd always captained a player from a top 6 side with an easy fixture. This season, I am a reformed dullard. 🙂

Going for a strange captaincy can be a huge differential. You win some, you lose some.

Albrighton, GW1 2010/11 - He was on fire in pre-season and was in my team as a 4.5 midfielder, I kept going on about him to one of my friends who said he was as stupid pick, so I captained him to prove a point. 2 assists at home to West Ham, bossed the game but the judges didn't give him any points. He still outscored most players that week. Drogba scored a hattrick but he wasn't massively owned. Still I remember my GW rank was 25k.

      Adam, November-time 2010/11 - own goal and 0 points total, I believe.

N'Doye, GW34 2014/15 - scored a brace in his first game of the DGW, blanked in the second, but still outscored Hazard by quite a bit. I captained him 2 weeks later and he blanked.

Lescott last season at home to Southampton. I didn't fancy any attacking players to do well, Southampton had gone off the boil and I had Lescott, McAuley and Dawson all in my team. I thought, why not quadruple up on the WBA defence. They kept a clean sheet.

Had a few captained Adam for Blackpool against Blackburn a few years ago simply because I had it on him by accident got rewarded with a goal and assist. Captained Cech I think against Man Utd when the title race was already over and the "kids" from both teams got a run out got a clean sheet and couple of save points if I remember correctly, Chelsea had kept around 6 clean sheets in a row or something like that think it was the 08/09 season. Also remember captaining Gallas for Spurs who kept a clean sheet and he grabbed the only goal of the game and duly collected the bonus points for a nice 20+ haul. These were before I had found this site and will never be repeated again.

Cap taking Andy Caroll (yes, I did own him) the week after that monster double where Yaya got a hat trick, as did Suarez. He played Sunderland on the Monday and got a goal and assist. Huge green arrow!

      Last Season 1 off captaincies.

      Henderson (1 times - 10 points - average 10 points)

      Downing (1 times - 22 points - average 22 points)

      Benteke (1 times - 46 points - average 46 points)

      Baines (1 times - 20 points - average 20 points)

      Benteke I only owned 1 game-week

Never owned Hazard, only had Kane 1 week and 1200 overall, rank no player is essential!

    Myhill Hennesey

    Mane Cesc Walcott Sterling Sanchez
    Rooney Benteke Sakho

0.5 ITB to do Ivan Roo -> 5m Kun

Foster injured, Hennessy looks like he might move to WBA, thus you have their keepers covered for 8.5. Until Foster comes back anyway.

WBA got decent fixture GW5 onwards. Out of all the 8.5m combo keeper I trust WBA the most.

Some of Myhill's biggest hauls was against the top 4 anyway last seasom

No Hazard Sanchez and Kun. Sacrifices had to be made this early season.

            Kun plan is in session.
If one of Sanchez or Hazard hits form, the plan is to downgrade Mane to Ritchie or Ki and upgrade Wally/Cesc.

If all three hits form early then its WC time 😉

Nice mid and attack but you know what I'm going to say

You're defence needs some improvement. People often under estimate the defence and end up with 3 or 4 players averaging 2 points every week.

Downgrading silva to sterling or mane for example would give you plenty of funds to do that. Also consider: Silva scored 190 points last year and he's priced at 10 m. Ivanovic scored 180 points and is priced at 7 m. Ivan is a bargain

      1. milanista10
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Well I do feel the defence needs some improvement but I can't see how it will be done. Silva scored 190 points in very much less minutes though mate, also provides a suitable captain choice (not sure you would want to captain Ivanovic no matter what game he has). Also, you need to keep in mind that a 5mil defender such as Williams or Lescott will score 120-130 points whereas a 5mil midfielder will unlikely to even reach 90 points throughout the season.

Important to consider that alot of Silva's points (i.e. most his goals) came playing as almost a false nine when they had no strikers. That is unlikely to happen again. In fact he may well not even be in the number 10 position, but out on the wing in a 442/4222.

fair enough. We have very similar teams.

Main differences is that i've got ivanovic, mane and kane rather than rooney, silva and a 5m defender. Having mane and kane has helped me bring in ivanovic and sakho rather than wilson/deeney.

I'm considering other mids rather than mane, possibly silva, but i'm gonna see how preseason goes

Sounds great and your team looks to be a good one. Personally, I'm not too keen on Mane but he could be gold if he keeps his scoring boots. Ivanovic was in my first draft so maybe I'll have to find a way to bring him back if I decide to go against the cheap defence strategy 😀

              Butland / Hennessey

              Ivanovic / Cedric / Francis / Huth / 4.0

              Hazard / Cazorla / Hederson / Mane / Wanyama

              Costa / kane / sakho

That's my team atm. Like i said mane is still a concern. I'm still looking at which arsenal mid is the best and if there's a way to fit in walcott.

ivanovic can be downgraded to 5m defender and upgrade costa to aguero if he becomes the essential player everyone makes him out to be but we'll see

Yes this teams looks good. I will most probably do Silva to Walcott (you can do Mane to Walcott I assume) if it was clear that he will be starting the first few games which could also give me extra cash for the defence or maybe even getting Aguero and Kane for Costa and Rooney with that saved 1mil.

                You prefer Hendo over Milner?

Plus i'd have kane over rooney for now

man utd team all over the place atm and Rooney has been poor. Kane on the other hand on form and the main man for spurs.

You've got a fantastic team, I'd say just shuffle around 2 or 3 of your players to find that balance in your defence too

Cheers mate. I was considering Kane as well, could be the easiest way to get the extra 1-1.5mil to improve the defence. Not sure what improvement to make however, maybe Cedric to Azpi or Kos?

Personally i'd upgrade williams. I'd keep cedric - Southampton as a team and defense wise are really good and their defenders will get 140/150 points if they play most games

Williams with the new BPS rules will be getting lots of them. Not sure if that would end up beating Southampton defenders higher CS potential though.

You could possibly look at other 5.0 defenders rather than williams. Alderweiereld or however you spell it could be a good shout. Van Aanholt is a good prospect if you're willing to take a punt

Alderweireld is an option, will want to see how Spurs will shape up first though. PVA is a decent prospect but I somehow think that it's better to just get a 4.5mil defender from Sunderland and use the 0.5mil elsewhere. Currently considering Darmian or more likely Koscielny if I managed to get 1mil from a downgrade elsewhere
