Moving Target

Moving Target – Christian Benteke

Following weeks of speculation, Liverpool finally announced the arrival of Christian Benteke in a £32 million deal. The Belgian became the Merseysiders’ seventh new signing in a summer of transition as Brendan Rodgers’ side looks to put last season’s disappointing sixth-place finish behind them.

Speaking to the club’s official website just minutes after putting pen to paper, the 24-year-old thanked the Reds’ upper management for sanctioning the move, before lauding the Merseysiders’ storied past:

“I’m very happy to be here and I would like to thank the owners, Ian [Ayre] and of course the manager for their massive effort to bring me here. It’s hard to show your emotion when you’ve just come from doing something [like this] but of course I am very happy. I know Liverpool is a big story. They’ve won [many] league titles and the Champions League five times and of course the UEFA Cup and a lot of trophies. I know it’s a big club. I think there are quality players, a lot of good players with big names of course. I’m happy to be part of this team and will [try] to help this team reach its goals.”

The History

Born in Zaire (DR Congo), Benteke’s family emigrated at an early age to Liege, Belgium. A two-year stint at the youth academy of Standard Liege was followed by a move to Genk in 2006. The striker earned his first start for the Belgian club during the 2007/08 league campaign and went on to notch two assists in seven appearances. After making just six starts (three goals and two assists) in the next full season, Benteke was shipped out to fellow Belgian Pro League outfit K.V.Kortrijk in the summer of 2009.

Benteke excelled in his new surrounds, tallying 15 goals and nine assists across 36 outings. Nonetheless, the robust striker spent the following campaign on loan again, teaming up with top-tier side KV Mechelen. Having bagged seven goals and one assist in 25 appearances, Benteke was finally afforded a run of starts for Genk in the 2011/12 season, notching 16 goals in 32 league outings. Alerted by his impressive strike rate, Aston Villa landed the Belgium international in August 2012.

Benteke’s debut season for the Villains served up 19 goals and four assists in 34 appearances, trumping Dwight Yorke’s record (18) for the most goals amassed in a Premier League season by a Villa player. The former Genk marksman was subsequently named as the runner-up to Gareth Bale for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Knee, groin and Achilles complaints limited Benteke to 24 starts in the 2013/14 season. A run of 11 blanks from Gameweek 5 marked a downturn of form that saw him chalk up a less eye-catching haul of ten goals and three assists across 26 appearances. This lack of rhythm carried over to the season just past, with Paul Lambert’s more pragmatic tactics seeing Benteke fail to score in 14 of his first 18 appearances. The appointment of Tim Sherwood in the Villa Park hot seat then triggered a dramatic upturn in fortunes, with Benteke recording 11 goals in as many starts to close out the campaign.

On the international stage, Benteke represented Belgium at every youth level from Under-17 to Under-21, scoring 24 times in 37 outings. He has subsequently found the net in seven of his 24 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

With Daniel Sturridge still recuperating from hip surgery undergone at the end of the previous campaign, Benteke looks set to leap ahead of Danny Ings, Divock Origi, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert to spearhead Liverpool’s attack in the campaign ahead. The Merseysiders’ pre-season encounters so far suggest that Brendan Rodgers will favour a 4-3-3 system next term, though the Reds boss has also briefly trialled a midfield diamond formation in the early stages of the summer.

Certainly, Rodgers will be looking to Benteke to improve a stuttering attack that ranked seventh for goals scored (52) in the previous campaign, tallying 48 fewer than during the 2013/14 season, when Luis Suarez and Sturridge tormented top-flight backlines.

Aside from the £32m outlay, the underlying stats also reinforce the notion that he’s the prime selection for Rodgers in Sturridge’s absence. Benteke’s shot conversion rate (16.3%) far surpassed any of Liverpool’s forwards last year, with fellow new boy Ings next in line with 11.3%. Given that he’d scored 18.3% and 14.9% in his first two years in the top flight, the big Belgian’s record suggests he should prove a reliable source of goals, providing he’s given the chances.

The main issue, though, is whether Benteke will fit Liverpool’s possession-based style of play. In his three years in the Premier League, his aerial ability was key to his success – in terms of successful headers, the big Belgian sat second amongst forwards in 2012/13 (with 269) and 2013/14 (with 220) before moving up to first in 2014/15, with 187. Given that Liverpool ranked second-lowest and lowest for crosses over the last two seasons, it’s fair to say he has some adapting to do, with the Reds unlikely to play to his perceived strengths. In saying that, it’s worth noting that only 13 of Benteke’s 42 Premier League goals have came from headers.

Yet to feature in pre-season, Benteke will need to step up his match sharpness with the new campaign just over two weeks away. Priced at 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Benteke will challenge the likes of Graziano Pelle (8.0) and Romelu Lukaku (8.0) for a position in our squads. All three suffered from prolonged barren spells last term, yet the former’s late spree gives us the greatest confidence heading into the new term. Certainly, with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho feeding him, he should be afforded plenty of chances and may also stake a claim for spot-kick duties, which would certainly have a knock-on effect on Jordan Henderson’s Fantasy potential, given the latter looked at the head of the penalty queue prior to Benteke’s arrival.

The fixtures are somewhat patchy for Liverpool over the first few Gameweeks. Although trips to Stoke, Arsenal and United are less than appealing, the Reds host Bournemouth, West Ham, Norwich and Villa in the first seven Gameweeks, with such a schedule offering Benteke the chance to make an immediate impact. Certainly, Sturridge’s return will need to be monitored, though if the new boy makes his mark early, Rodgers is likely to ease the injury-plagued former Chelsea man back into the fold.

"... Alexis comes back on August 3..." [Wenger]

This is big news, that's only 5 days before the season starts. He'll need some kind of pre-season. I think he may not start until the Liverpool game on the 24th. Should give Walcott 2 games at least.

Yes. But pre-season is usually 5-6 weeks. You'd imagine they'd give him at least 3. By coming back so late I imagine Sanchez already knows he'll miss the first couple of games.

Switch Ivan for Azpi, that way you save 1m, which will give you 1,5m in the bank, then maybe switch Mane for Wally, Caz or any Arsenal mid. If you need a Southampton mid, get Wanyama instead of Ritchie, now you have even more spare cash 🙂

I don't think there is a place that really stands out. Mane is a good option! You seem to be set on Ritchie, that is my biggest concern. Mostly because I haven't seen him play. You also have a non playing 4.0, but that probably is part of the plan. At least until a playing one arises. Why not targett if you fancy the saints but in def and offence? Afraid Betrand will return really soon?

Cheers for the reply! I do fancy Mane, haven't seen Ritchie but going purely on numbers and the fact I don't like any 6.5m mids

Wan't a saints defender for life so wont waste time with Targett

I thought about that too, but the 6.5 mids are crap or have hard fixtures. I decided to go without Haz and Costa and spread the money around. A bit of a risk, but I think I'll manage.

Good! I like Giroud, people just can't seem to squeeze him in. I posted a similar thing about Ritchie above, I don't really know him. He seems like a good 6.0, but there are also pretty decent 7.0 midfielders. If he performs it's great, but it seems like you could improve your team by balancing it out at little more.

The easiest way to change it up is switch Giroud out. But I like him. It would take some courage to take either Rooney or Costa out, but that cash could be used to upgrade part of your team you are unhappy about.

Yup thats wt...planning for Rooney/Costa + Giroud--->Aguero + Performing 6.5mn fwd when time comes...Ritchie is worth a gamble at start as he will at worst give assists cuz of corners and fks

And Giroud has very good record against WHm and cpl in recent history..I tend to quantify the mentality intangible when it comes to strikers...They always seem to have certain teams they love scoring against...def a pattern... will be great if someone can shed more light on it

You make valid points! I just think there are too many great midfield options, and 6.0 is quite a lot for a 5th mid so Ritchie loses out in my team. I will monitor him though.

Giroud indeed has a good record against West ham, and most non top 6 teams and seems to be getting better every year. I cannot prove what you suggest but do know that he performs wel against lesser opposition and scores a lot with his head. I hope he pulls one of his billiard shots of, gotta love those goals! He also has a great attitude, and mostly works his socks off. If I didn't already have three Arsenal players he would be in my team, but Theo seems too good to not give him a chance. If he fails miserably, so be it and I slowly transfer in Giroud.

Ritchie should be 4th Mid so you have heavy FWD at start...Also as and when the time comes you will want Haz and/or Silva...You may require funds from forwards for that as you should not spend more than 38million on midfield for season long stability....

Thanks a lot for your glowing support guys ... i think I am going to start with this team only for Giroud/Benteke thing to sort....also this team perfectly rotates between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 depending on BOU fixtures benching Ritchie for a home playing defender 🙂

One question though. If Ritchie takes all set pieces, from corners to free kicks, why not play him every week? You would expect Bourne to play on the counter and hurt opposing teams with set pieces and corners wouldn't you? I don't know if he plays centrally, but wouldn't that make him also a good option for away games?

But with Lei being the only anomaly i do not think promoted teams have performed well away atleast not at start...Can look into data of set piece goals conceded in last season by the 3 away teams its playing 1st 6 GWs and you get the desired answer...thanks for giving me this idea 🙂

    B)
    Schmeichel
    Mertesacker Cedric Azpi
    Hendo Chadli Mané Hazard
    Sakho Rooney Costa
    Hennessey Wanyama Baker Smith

As you can see the only changes are Hendo/Silva, Chadli/Ritchie and Sakho/Deeney.
I lean toward A, because My three choices have better opening fixtures, but I'd love to know what you all think.

I think both options are quite good. It's difficult to judge because I would make different choices when it comes to the key decisions. Your fixture argument is solid, as you have no decent 5th midfielder so must pick the strongest 11. That probably makes A a better option. However, do realise that downgrading Silva (Haz probably a no-go) can go a long way and a lot of your succes hinges on if Deeney can keep up with Sakho or your other players can compensatie for him. I doubt that, and rate Sakho highly, so would like to suggest a compomise in which you upgrade Deeney to Sakho and downgrade Silva to someone who of 8.5-9. No Yaya?

I mean no offence, but B looks more like a team you would select last year. Shelvey, Agbonlahor, Mirallas and Hooper don't deserve a place in your team I believe. I do like Ibe, hopefully he can keep it up. Would be a great 5th mid. Another 5.5 midfielder of quality is hard to find, and I get that your big guns make a 5.5 mid neccesary but Shelvey is not that midfielder. He also tends to get carded regularly, and is not afraid to go for a red one either. Why not Ki if you want to select a Swansea mid?

Redmond also an option for that price? Richie for 6.

Last thing: try to look for value. The most expensive players (Haz, Silva, Rooney) are obviously good picks, but you need some cheaper ones to balance it out.

These community articles could help you out, I am just trying to help!

Yeah, sure! I will take A as a starting point. You do still have money in the bank, so changes can be made quite easily.

I think a Chelsea double up is a bit too much, but if you trust them you could keep both Courtois and Azpi. You do know that lots of cheaper keepers do similar or better than keepers from top teams? Keep that in mind, and aim for 9.0 for both keepers. If you want to keep them both for 9,5, fine but something has gotta give so if you need .5 I would get it here.

Clyne, Cedric, Huth and Azpi are all good choices, you could even keep Baker because you don't have the money. Otherwise consider a NOR defender for 4.5 to rotate with Clyne for the tough away games, but I think your defence works well with 4 strong starting players. Most of the weeks you will play only three and and 6, 5,5, 5,0, 4,5 and 4.0 setup is quite flexible if you need to change something!

There are hardly any good players available at the 5.5-6.5 bracket, they will come up but are hard to predict. Players such as Cabaye have difficult fixtures, so you will need to go above or below that for now although Redmond could be an option. I would consider swapping Silva and possibly even Haz out because they are quite expensive and I think the're similar players available in the 8.0-9.0 bracket and the 2,5 from Haz go do a lot for your team but I understand if you don't want to transfer Haz out. Silva also 15% ownership, so can be left out easily.

Silva -> Cesc, Walcott, Yaya, Mata, Mane, Sterling,Depay (In that order more or less)
Shelvey -> Ritchie but I prefer Milner/ Hendo/ Chadli. If Ritchie, you can invest in your frontline to go with 1 premium and two midpriced forwards for 8-9.
Agbonlahor -> Deeney/Wilson or Sakho has already been mentioned and is a good transfer.

What are you going to do?

            Cheers lad! Much appreciated,

I have made some changes, so far i took your advise with using 9.0 for Keepers swapping Courtiois for Vorm and upgrading Hennessey to Schmeichel.

For the defence I'm happy with the spread so i left it as it is.

With my midfield I down graded Hazard to Fabregas, and upgraded Shelvey to Mane.

Finally with my forward's I upgraded Agbonlahor to Sahko. (Still not sure if i want Sahko, Berahino or Mitrovic.

This is my team as it stands:

            Goalkeeper: Schmeichel
            Defenders: Clyne, Azpilicueta, Cedric
            mids: Ozil, Silva, Mane, Fabregas
            forwards: Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

            Subs: Vorm, Huth, Ibe, Barker.

What are your thoughts on this team?

            1. Daaf
              • 8 Years
              8 years, 9 months ago

I actually quite like this team! I think your midfield is really strong, especially if Ibe can get some minutes and Mane is a premium pick in my opinion. I already talked about the defence, which is fine. I have Rooney and Sakho myself, and Benteke at 8.5 is a great option! Monitor Berahino and Mitrovic, because they could be good options for parts of the season.

I don't know if Leicster and Spurs rotate well, but I guess it will work most weeks.

Care to rate my team (as it is right now):

Panti - Hennesey (pretty much done)
Koscielny - Clyne - Jenkinson - Whittaker - Huth (also, I am happy to roll the dice without a chelsea defender)
Fabregas - Walcott - Ozil - Milner - Bolasie (haha, just a punt for week 1, I'd hate for Sakho to score against Arsenal so I want to bench him)
              Rooney - Lukaku - Sakho

.5 in the bank so Lukaku could change to Benteke if you'd prefer that.

Quite similar really, what do you think?

Cheers mate!, Yeah i also rate your team, very alike.

Defence & Midfield is looking sharp, bolasie could turn into a really good punt.

I'm not sure on lukaku, as they have a really tough start to the season besides the easy first game. The reason i went for Benteke is because i'm a liverpool supporter and would rather have him.

Also is Hennesey going to get much game time, because i'm thinking of down grading either Vorm or Schmeichel.

                1. Daaf

                  8 years, 9 months ago

Thanks! You're right about Lukaku I guess, it's a one week punt to hopefully negate the impact of Costa. I might as well switch to Pelle considering there is the Aguero thing I have to worry about first and my final game of the season punt on Lukaku failed predictably haha. And some SOU coverage seems nice.

I don't know if Hennesey is going to get much gametime to be honest, the overall consensus seems to be that that might be the case. There are no real alternatives at 4.0, so I figured I'd give him a chance. It would be a bonus if he played. I chose Panti because he is pretty good both home and away, and get lots of saves. A rotation can work, but I tend to pick the wrong option once in a while and end up with points on the bench. Adrian or Fabbi would be my second/third pick, unless of the 4.5 keepers such as Krul started performing really well. Vorm is an option, they surely will improve this year, but i'm gonna pass and will want to see it before I select him.
