Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Janmaat Concern for Magpies

Daryl Janmaat withdraws from Holland duties due to a knee complaint. John Stones is ruled out of England’s qualifiers, whilst Wayne Rooney is a doubt. Gareth McAuley is available for Northern Ireland, whilst Switzerland are optimistic on Xherdan Shaqiri’s chances of recovering from a thigh problem.

Janmaat withdraws from Holland Duties

Daryl Janmaat has been ruled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their Euro qualifiers due to stiffness in his knee. Newcastle have since released a statement confirming they are optimistic that the right-back will be fit to face Norwich City at home next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In spite of the fact that Newcastle United have claimed just one clean sheet this term and shipped 10 goals in their previous quartet of match-ups, Janmaat remains on our radar because of his supreme underlying statistics. Only Aleksandar Kolarov (one every 62.1 minutes) boasts a better shot frequency than Janmaat (68.1 minutes) among those defenders who’ve made at least four appearances. Furthermore, the marauding Dutchman has amassed two more shots on target (six) than any defender. Considering that the Magpies now enjoy an excellent batch of fixtures through to Gameweek 15 (NOW, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry), Janmaat could serve as an excellent differential if passed fit for the Canaries clash.

Stones Ruled Out for Three Lions

John Stones – who’s carrying a minor knee injury – will play no part in England’s final pair of Euro 2016 qualifiers after being ruled out yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: With Seamus Coleman nearing a return and Leighton Baines closing in on a return, Everton’s defence is slowly getting back to full strength. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Stones recovers swiftly as the Toffees gear up for an exceptional run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 (SUN, whu, AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO). For now, Phil Jagielka (5.4) presents the safest route into their rearguard, while Tim Howard (5.1) – who’s ten points clear of any Everton defenders by virtue of eight save points and four bonus points – should pique the interest of anyone scouring the market for a shot-stopper. Ultimately, the fact that the Merseysiders conceded an average of one goal per match through the opening eight Gameweeks – despite facing off against six of last term’s top eight outfits – bodes well for their clean-sheet prospects over a kinder stretch.

Rooney Worry for Hodgson

Wayne Rooney, Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey all missed training for England yesterday, with the United skipper rated a doubt for Friday’s clash with Estonia after picking up a knock against Arsenal.

The Scout Says: With England already through to Euro 2016, it seems unlikely that Rooney will be risked for the Three Lions. The United skipper’s record-breaking displays on the international front have masked his domestic toils, which have seen him score just once in the league this term. The arrival of Anthony Martial has forced Rooney into a central support role at United, and although their fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 11, Martial and Juan Mata – who has scored or assisted in five of the last seven – look the likeliest routes into Louis van Gaal’s attack.

McAuley Fit for Northern Ireland

Gareth McAuley has been given the go-ahead to play for Northern Ireland during the international break – the defender has been passed fit after suffering a recurrence of a calf complaint against Crystal Palace last weekend. Meanwhile, Baggies team-mate Jonny Evans is still touch-and-go for his nation’s crunch tie against Greece on Thursday.

The Scout Says: Although West Brom’s flawless road record came to an end at the hands of the Eagles, the West Midlanders remain a fine source of mid-priced defensive assets in light of Tony Pulis’ resilient brand of football. Craig Dawson remains the prime pick among the back four owing to his security of starts and fitness, while Boaz Myhill ranks second in the keeper rankings for total score (41). Both will continue to be in high demand as they embark on a favourable trio of match-ups (SUN, nor, LEI). The trip to Carrow Road is arguably the sternest test on paper, yet investors in West Brom’s rearguard will be emboldened by the fact that only Southampton (21) have conceded fewer shots inside the box in away matches than the Baggies (22).

Swiss Optimistic on Shaqiri

Having sat out Stoke City’s 1-0 road win over Aston Villa due to a thigh strain, Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to be passed fit for Switzerland’s Euro qualifiers, according to head coach Vladimir Petkovic:

“I have no doubt about the condition of Shaqiri. He will play on Friday (against San Marino).”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.8 in the wake of a 0.2 depreciation, Shaqiri has failed to establish himself as contender in the mid-priced midfielder bracket. Turning out for a Stoke outfit that’s tallied just eight goals in as many matches, the former Bayern Munich recruit lays claim to a solitary assist across 407 minutes. Moreover, his underlying statistics don’t particularly portend imminent attacking returns, with just two shots on target and seven key passes arriving this campaign. Those managers yearning for Potters coverage ahead of a decent trio of encounters (swa, WAT, new) might consider the 6.0-priced Marko Arnautovic, who – apart from notching two goals and assists – places top among Stoke’s midfielders for attempts (11), shots on target (four) and key passes (nine).

Thing is Newcastle were awful last season as well. Yet Janmaat was one of the top scoring defenders at the and of the season. He will do well in these fixtures.

The dude would have been part of the optimal dead team last season that would have beat Si March to first overall. He'll get the ppg with the right fixtures.

The underlying stats have been right about all others so far, I don't see why he shouldn't at least be considered...but long may that continue.

Underlying stats work for attackers. He's a defender in a monumentally bad defence. CSs are the bread and butter you need from defenders.

Each to their own, the reason we all own Kolarov is not for his expert defending.

No, it's the fact that he's an exceptional attacking defender AND plays for a team with a solid defence (at least when Kompany plays instead of Otamendi)

Nobody would own Kolarov if City didn't keep CSs.

Janmaat reminds me of the Caulker wagon last season (I didn't avoid that one!)

                8 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, you've hit the nail on the head. If Kompany was ruled out for a month or two, would you get rid of Kolarov? Probably not due to the fact we think he could always grab an assist or a goal, it's the same for (optimistic) Janmaat owners, I can definitely see your point of view. We all strive for a bit of a differential and in my eyes, he's certainly one for the defence.

                1. Billy Gilmore

                  8 years, 7 months ago

Probably not, but that would probably be a lot to do with "big team bias" where because Man City are a title challenger they must be likely to keep CSs. I'd put their chances of CSs with or without Kompany far ahead of Newcastle's though.

I don't think Janmaat is "that" bad an option, just don't think he's worth it at that price given other options and Newcastle's form. Should their form improve then I'd definitely give him a look in.

Well after a bad start, like everyone else here mostly i ended up jumping to 1081 due to great captain choices last 4 GW's. Thats basically all.

I do hope i can end up in top 10k or so. Last season i started in gw10 and just played h2h for cash. So, my score and team was completely picked just for h2h. First full season and im doing really well.

Guess devoting a lot of time to thinking what to do and reading information here from people who know more than i do, surely helped a lot.

      Hope it stays this way

From GW11 there will be a significant upturn in easy fixtures for the big guns, Chelsea, Man U, Everton, Southampton could it be worthwhile getting two big strikers to accompany Aguero.

Martial Lukaku Pelle and even Costa could be in for a few big hauls.

Doing this would impact your midfield though, probably rotate Richie and Hoolahan or look at Wanyama as bench fodder with 4 big Mids.

I have Martial and Aguero but another would impact my midfield too much. Would like Lukaku but might go for Barkley instead, he looks lively this season

Would also like Pelle but might gamble on Mane as there aren't many cheap midfielders doing a job

In two minds as to holding onto Darmian the next couple of fixtures to then benefit from GW11 onwards. Have my eye on Coleman, so may shift Kolarov for him.

    Janmaat my differential.

My brother owned him last year for a good run of fixtures and he scored some decent points.

Hoping for the same over this kind run.

Expecting a goal rather than a CS from him

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Overlooked Gems

Lukaku has defied the fixtures, Spurs and Palace have turned around their form and made the likes of Dann, Dier, Eriksen and Lamela options.

What other hidden gems are there lurking around to give us the edge over our mini-league rivals?

Dier on 4YC? Or banned? No thanks.

Eriksen is an option but so many good midfielders I trust more.
      Never liked Lamela.
Lukaku is good and may make an appearance when his fixtures sweeten up. But he is a known troll. Performs vs the stronger teams and not the weaker.

Tadic is going under the radar a bit with Mane hogging the limelight, but I still think Mane is the better option. I don't think there's anyone I'm considering who isn't being mentioned on here; the key is more "which ones do I choose"? Because I have a midfield of Sanchez, Mane, KDB and Mahrez, it's difficult for me to get some players I would otherwise want (Walcott, Payet, Tadic). I think getting those calls right is what will give people the edge.

Mr. Ryan Bertrand... full backs are killing it with the bonus system... Leicester at home gives hope of attacking returns, same can be said about Liverpool away (tough game but Clyne and Moreno are just as attacking so there's hope of the full backs doing something) then BOU, sun, STO ... he'll do for me!

      Gomes
      Spurs Defenders
      Cabaye

      Barkley
      Lukaku
Wijnaldum (Goal & assist against Chelsea and City, good fixtures to come)

Gomes is an excellent shout. I brought him in GW3 on my wildcard - best decision I've made all season so far.

Season long VS Daily Fantasy Football.

I wondered what people thought of the following question:

"Who knows more about football, the winner of this seasons FPL, or a player who consistently makes ~30% ROI a gameday by playing daily fantasy football"?

Is there an average positive ROI that a daily fantasy manager can have that you think does not match the skill level of this years FPL winner?

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

+ive ROI on sites that take a cut is always a good start. There's so much more nuance to full season games with planning, team structure and risk management.

      1. GoldenDonkey
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

I would reason that "planning, team structure and risk management" are essential components of a winning daily fantasy manager too. I agree it is a different kind of planning, but are the skills required really that different?

          • 10 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

I get what you mean but often prize allocations dictate a strategy of going all in on one defence and picking out the one drubbing of the weekend. Planning is still there but team structure largely goes out of the window and risk management is reduced to "go all-in" because only the top 3 places in a league of 50-500 people are worth placing in.

          1. GoldenDonkey
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 7 months ago

Thanks for your thoughts Balders. A Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) manager who achieves an average of 30% would be a Cash Game player (Heads UP and 50/50s) and therefore would not looking to be playing a high variance strategy.

In regards to the bigger player events, I think a strategy of collecting a group of favourites is not a long term winning strategy, if you want to place in the big money. If you look at the previous MondoGoal £10k winners, most of them do not include a lot of heavy favourites.

Have these 2 transfers (-4) kinda lined up

Gomez or Richards > Arsenal Defender
    Ayew > Walcott

Am starting to wonder the Ayew > Walcott transfer is worth taking a hit for, or wtether I shoudl wait a week, sesp with Arsenal having CL shortly after the Watford game (= worries of a Theo cameo )

    Whaddya reckon?

You'll always worry about the team sheet with Walcott but he's explosive. Get bellerin for arsenal def.

You already own mane? If not maybe him over Walcott. Mind you when Walcott plays he's one of the best FPL points scorers in the game.

Unless your defence is in tatters I wouldn't do the Gomez one for a hit.

Ayew to Walcott can wait 1 more week - I feel Walcott will likely play 65/70 minutes against Watford, but still it's possible Ayew scores and Walcott doesn't

Here's my front 8 for this week:

Silva (BOU) - Manè (LEI) - Ayew (STK) - Mahrez (sou) - Payet (cry)

Aguero (BOU) - Vardy (sou) - Pellè (LEI)

Who do you think I should bench provided everyone is fit? I'm currently with Vardy benched as I reckon Mahrez will be back, on pens and set pieces and looking to prove a point.

Don't get Swans, if you're looking in the £5mil bracket then Toby A or Janmaat if you fancy a punty one. Definitely get Bertrand if you can afford him.

Palace defenders at £4.5m are a bargain too, Soaure

My current team sitting on 400k overall
    FT0 ITB 0.0 TV 101.2
    Myhill
    Sagna, Naughton, Alderweireld
    Hoolahan, Mahrez, Mata, Payet, Sanchez
    Aguero, Pelle

    De Gea, Deeney, Richards, Huth.

I have already used my WC and made 13 transfers this season, I have people above me in my mini-league on 6 transfers. I dont know where im going wrong? I have been slightly unlucky with injurys, example courtious (twice) and a few others. I managed to transfer aguero in for a hit this week which i didnt think was too bad. I cant keep making so many transfers or im gunna go nowhere but i cant seem to help myself lol. Opinions on team? I can see a few weak areas which im dying to change but being patient. cheers

De Gea + Myhill is not a good combo, I wouldn't be surprised if Myhill concedes to new manager Sunderland and De Gea does a million saves + gets MOTM against Everton. I'd be happy to play any of those in one week.

Sagna will rarely play now that Zab is back. Deeney isn't really a good option. Rest of the team looks fine.

13 transfers! Be patient, don't jump on last weeks performers on Monday morning and start planning 3-6 G/W's ahead (looking at the best fixtures/form players etc) and wait until later in the week before making the transfer is my advise.
Midfield and Forwards look sound to me.
Personally, I go for a cheap rotating pair of GK's, downgrade De Gea and bring in Vardy for Deeney for example?
With regards to your Defence, clean sheets are so hard to pick this season. TOT and WBA seem good places to start. When Kompany's fit, MCI might be a good source too although Sagna does face competition from Zab now..

Even after all that, your rank is 200k better than mine...

Cheers mate, i will take on-board your advise. Its hard too prioritize which transfers come first. Do i get de gea or myhill out first?
Deeney out first for a better option and start playing 3-4-3?
        Or work on my defense.

    Cook/Richards/Reid/Kolarov/Darmian
    Ayew/Payet/Mahrez/De Bruyne/Sánchez
    Vardy/Agüero/Ighalo

    1FT/1M ITB

Defence is a mess, So looking to bring in Coleman and Bertrand for Reid and Darmian to sort that out. Should i bring one in early or save my FT in case of injury or use the free transfer to downgrade Guzan to Hennessey freeing up 0.6 ?

    1. Arteta
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

Nice front 8 and as you said, defence is the weakest part of your team. I bought Bellerin so he's my suggestion for you. Bertrand could also be a great pick and I'll wait with Coleman for now. The most popular defenders at the moment are probably Dawson, Bellerin, Monreal, Toby, Dann and Souare. The option with Hennessey to get money is good idea, but my priority would be to sell Darmian.

FFS is so divided on Janmaat. I got him last week on a WC, could go either way really, very high variance. Annoyed by his -1 off the bench for Mahrez already though.

a bit hasty to judge them the worst team after just 8 games when they've had the most difficult fixtures to start.

But on Janmaat, he's a huge goal & assist threat for a defender. The lessening of their fixtures also helps
