Scout Picks Squad – Gameweek 21

We turn our attentions to next week’s Gameweek 21 matches now and give you an early heads-up on our Scout Picks thinking ahead of Tuesday evening’s deadline. This list of 22 players will also include some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the week unfolds.

For now, here’s the players currently on our radar…

Goalkeepers

Jack Butland (5.2) boasts 10 save and bonus points in as many starts, ensuring he’s the prime route into a Stoke City defence that’s carded eight clean sheets ahead of Norwich City’s visit. We’re also considering Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey (4.1), who is matched up against an Aston Villa attack that’s notched just three goals in five outings.

Defenders

With two clean sheets and a pair of assists in his last six, Toby Alderweireld (6.1) has amassed eight more points (95) than any defender this term, rendering him the premier source of Spurs defensive coverage as they prepare to host a Leicester City outfit that’s drawn three successive blanks and has doubts over Jamie Vardy’s fitness.

Ashley Williams (4.8) – who’s claimed maximum bonus points in all but one of the Swans’ five clean sheets this season – represents the best selection among a backline that silenced their opposition in three of the last four Gameweeks. Bolstering the Welshman’s Fantasy appeal, Swansea welcome a Sunderland side that’s tallied four goals in as many road ties.

Scott Dann (5.8) places joint-top among defenders for goals (three) and has been the shining light in a defence that recorded clean sheets in three of their previous five match-ups.

Branislav Ivanovic (6.5) has displayed renewed attacking verve since the appointment of Gus Hiddink, as evidenced by his first goal and assist of the campaign against Sunderland. Furthermore, Chelsea have impressed on the defensive front of late – registering back-to-back clean sheets – so are well-placed to stifle a West Brom team that mustered just three goals in their last four on the road.

With three assists to his name this term, Glen Johnson (5.3) offers the greatest capacity for attacking returns across the Potters’ rearguard. Elsewhere, Chris Smalling (6.8) remains the only secure route into United’s defence ahead of their road clash against Newcastle, who have failed to score since Gameweek 17.

West Ham United have proven a tough nut to crack since early December, chalking up four shut-outs in six outings. As such, Aaron Cresswell (5.5) piques our interest prior to a road encounter against Bournemouth, who have drawn blanks in their previous trio of fixtures. The former Ipswich Town full-back has accrued one goal and three assists and enjoys a share of the Hammers’ free-kicks.

Midfielders

Notwithstanding Yaya Toure’s recent flourish (three goals in four starts), Kevin De Bruyne (10.9) is our preferred City midfielder for the visit of Everton- the Belgian has served up 16 points in each of his last two home starts in the top-flight.

Marko Arnautovic (6.7) is in the midst of a purple patch (three goals in six) and will relish the prospect of facing a Norwich City defence that’s managed just three clean sheets all season.

Bagging two goals and an assist in four outings, Oscar (8.2) has emerged as a viable, mid-priced pick-up under the stewardship of Hiddink. Although Willian comes in cheaper than his Brazilian compatriot and is a skilled free-kick artist, Oscar arguably presents more of a threat from open play and also took Chelsea’s last spot-kick when Eden Hazard was on the pitch.

Riyad Mahrez (7.2) has posted three blanks on the trot but remains in our thoughts for Leicester’s trip to Tottenham, given he’s produced five sets of double-figures on his travels so far.

Mesut Ozil (10.0) has only failed to deliver Fantasy returns on two occasions across the last 14 Gameweeks, which bodes well for his attacking prospects at Anfield. Liverpool’s spate of defensive injuries will surely bolster his points potential.

Deli Alli (5.4) fell into the fifth-midfielder bracket earlier in the campaign but has since elevated his status with three goals and two assists in six starts. Aside from Harry Kane, the former MK Dons starlet is establishing himself as the choice route into a Lilywhites offense that’s tallied eight goals in four match-ups ahead of the visit of Leicester.

West Ham racked up five goals in their previous three fixtures and Michail Antonio (5.2) played a part (two goals and assists) in four of those, cementing his right-wing berth. The budget wide man – and the Irons’ offense as a whole – will doubtless profit from Dmitri Payet’s return to action, given that the Frenchman possess the second-best key-pass frequency (one every 23.4 minutes) of any midfielder this term.

Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson earns the nod for the visit of Sunderland. Having bagged the consolation at United last weekend, the Icelandic international will be looking to justify the underlying stats – he sits top amongst midfielders for shots on target (eight) over the last five Gameweeks.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (13.1) snapped his barren streak with an authoritative header against Watford, portending a return to form that has already prompted 37,000 Fantasy managers to snap up the explosive marksman for Man City’s home encounter against Everton. The fact that the Toffees conceded eight goals over the last four Gameweeks strengthens Aguero’s case for inclusion in our Scout Squad.

With three goals and one assist in his last two starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has thrust himself back into relevancy on the Fantasy scene. Fuelled by a renewed confidence and determination to impress the newly-installed boss, the irascible frontman could well punish a Baggies defence that notched a solitary clean sheet in their previous 10 outings.

Harry Kane (9.8) has grabbed braces in two of his past four home starts ahead of this weekend’s visit of Leicester. Everton’s trip to the Etihad promises to be a testing match-up, but Romelu Lukaku (9.3) is pitted against a Sky Blues rearguard that hasn’t secured a home clean sheet since Gameweek 4.

Watford’s top scorer Odion Ighalo (6.3) has netted in every fixture bar one since Gameweek 14 and travels to face a floundering Southampton outfit that’s mustered one win in eight match-ups.

On Standby

In addition to the standout players detailed above, there are a half-dozen recruits who are on the periphery of our thinking but could yet make the cut.

West Ham’s upturn in form brings Andy Carroll (6.4) and Dmitri Payet (7.7) into contention. The former has scored in consecutive starts and tallied three more shots on target (seven) than any forward during that time frame, while the latter averaged 6.2 points per appearance prior to picking up his ankle injury.

Yohan Cabaye (6.5) returns from suspension to face a Villains squad that’s registered just one clean sheet at home. Elsewhere in the capital, Willian (7.1) notched one goal and four assists in his previous four outings and charts top among Chelsea’s midfield contingent for shots on target (10).

A move up top for last week’s trip to United suggests Andre Ayew (11) may benefit from an advanced berth for Sunderland’s visit. Georginio Wijnaldum (6.9) is without a goal in five starts yet places top among midfielders for shots inside the box (nine) since Gameweek 17, with a move to a central support role strengthening the Dutchman’s appeal.

The Community Champion

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. Red Devil leads the way after beating the Picks by 25 points in Gameweek 17.

Gameweek 21’s Community Champion as selected by our lottery, is Lateriser12. He is currently ranked 77,547th and his highest finish in his seven years as a FPL manager was in 2012/13, where he ended the season 189th in the overall rankings.

In addition to a shot at the £100 Amazon prize, FantasyBet are offering a chance for further prizes to Community Champions that are eligible to play their games. More details can be found here.

Who are your Top 3 Managers in EPL so far? For me its

    1. Bilic
    2. Poch
    3. Wenger

All 3 have adapted to difficult situations, played away from their comfort zone and have really good results so far. All done with players they themselves brought into the team

Klopp seems the part but I think throwing him in at the moment would be a bit of an insult to the managers who are proving it by picking up more points than we'd expect them to. Liverpool are by no means over performing

I'd agree with that. Would probably single out Bilic. Think Pardew has done well with palace. Suffering with injuries atm but been on a great run since he took over. Obviously Ranieri is doing something right as well.

But surely if Klopp's was great at adapting he'd play to the strengths he currently has, long balls and crosses to bentekes head? Not pretty but sherlock showed it worked last season. Can play pretty football when you have the players capable?

Except Benteke is dreadful. 3 Liverpool strikers currently injured and still didn't get a start against Stoke Wednesday night. Liverpool are more fluid when they play the front 3 of Coutinho, Firmino and Lallana. See the City away game.

My only slight against Ranieri is that he hasn't shown that he can adapt when Mahrdy don't do well. He has 2 players who were already at the club, in the form of their lives, surely he should find a way to capitalise on that and solidify the rest. Kante has been good, but the defence.. meh

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

He has capitalised on that, they're Leicester and second in the league! Vardy was bang average last year and Ranieri has made him properly good. That's what management should be, not airlifting a shitload of expensive new talent.

I dunno what he told Vardy that made him unstoppable. If he really said something, credit for that. I always thought Leicester was an attacking team which got overwhelmed by their first season in top flight. In year 2, they have begun to express themselves. Personally i think they will falter and end up quite a few places below, in the table

            8 years, 5 months ago

Well I doubt he's been blanking him and ignoring his texts for 5 months 😉 FWIW I think Leicester will drop at least a couple of places, its almost inevitable, but they'll get a minimum of Europa league and that will be a huge success for a club like theirs.

Agree Pardew/Ranieri have done a good job but if you think about injuries think about westham. Undefeated in 7 with none of these guys, or for a few games

      Sakho
      Payet
      Moses
      Lanzini
      Carroll (missed a few games)
      Reid

Everyone says about Arsenal injuries. pool injuries, palace injuries etc yet west ham hardly seem mentioned. Then lets add Bilic has never managed in the PL before, compared to Ranieri for example. Currently we are 6th 1 point behind united.

Finally look at the games we won:

      vs Liverpool 3-0 & 2-0
      vs city 2-1
      vs Arsenal 2-0
      vs Chelsea 2-1
      vs Palace 3-1

exactly. This is why I rate Bilic the most. I initially thought WHU would be only attack, but the defensive turnaround when so many were injured, has been really impressive

When you follow the BBC Bilic/Westham is hardly ever mentioned, its nice to see some recognition for once. If we could have beaten villa/sunderland/norwich we would be top!!!

Same for me. That's what has been most impressive. He had nothing to work with at all going forward with all their injuries so he just locked it down at the back and waited for 1 or 2 to return. When he has his team back in a couple of weeks he'll be going at teams again.

A question regarding autosubs. If it's newbish please forgive me.

    GK
    Def1 Def2 Def3
    Mid1 Mid2 Mid3 Mid4
    For1 For2 For3

    GK2 Def4 Mid5 Def5

If Def1 and For1 do not play, how do the autosubs work? i.e. who goes out first. I can think of 2 scenarios:

    a) For1 ➡ Def4 which would mean Def1 ➡ Def5
    b) Def1 ➡ Def4: which would mean For1 ➡ Mid5

    1. Eden Hazardous
      • 9 Years

      B)

      Its actually For1 ➡ Def4 and Def1 ➡ mid5

It's always auto subbed in the order you specify unless that sub would lead to an illegal formation.

      So B here.

You must always play with a minimum of 3 defenders, if injuries/availability permit, so b) would happen first. That criterion having been satisfied, the auto subs then come in from the bench in order,

      so Mid5 before Def5

    Morning guys!

Last nights scoutcast has me thinking about that wildcard. Like I said on there though - would want to change the whole team and that could be super risky!

Lukaku potentially injured kind of helps though....

Haven't seen the Scoutcast but the worst thing to do with a WC in our pockets is to have a tinker and see what WC team we can come up with - it makes it so tempting to hit the button even when we have perfectly fine teams at the moment!

Yeah - I've not done that yet although I have come close.

Need to take some risks soon. Wondering if I hold off on Aguero and mix it up in midfield instead

Get Costa instead, he's being severely overlooked on here, mainly due to Aguero's goal. That's what I'm doing.

Costa is interesting because I can do it in 2 moves I think, rather than 3 for Aguero.

Means I have Clyne for another week but I don't need to play him...

Similar situation here, although I'm pretty set on going without Aguero for now so the fact I can get Costa with 1 less move is just a bonus.

Odion Ighalo wants to play for Manchester United but doesn’t think he’ll leave Watford in this transfer window.

The Hornets striker has attracted attention from Spanish clubs this season as he has spearheaded his team’s charge up the league, scoring 14 league goals.

"There has been speculation from Spain and Italy but I've played there and now want to play in England," Ighalo told The Sun.

“I don't think I will be moving but I'm not sure I'd say no if United called. They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV. They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream."

Bournemouth have made a loan bid for AC Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy, according to Sky Sports in Italy.

The Italian international has been on loan at Monaco this season but has failed to score.

Bournemouth are trying to negotiate a loan deal for the striker with a view to secure a permanent transfer in the summer for £10m, according to the Daily Mail.

Genoa, Bologna and Fiorentina are also chasing the 23-year-old.

Shaarawy was such a good player, what happened to him?

Nailed right now, but for how long? IMO he is a huge rotation risk beyond the next couple of gameweeks, especially once Hazard is back.

He's a nice punt for sure, but you need to be in a position to mitigate that risk. If you have several punts in midfield you could get caught short.

Very interesting, he's top for goal attempts so may indicate a change in his mindset recently. Still high for chances created, but he's perhaps attempting to get in behind and find the goal himself more than hold the ball up.

Quick question regarding double gameweeks - historically when have double gw'ers had their blank game? Is it before or after the double gw?

I'd ideally like to use my bench boost for 15 players on the double gw, but not sure if this is possible.

It has been both situations. Earlier as well as later. You'll just have to wait for more news I am afraid. Should not be long now. Just keep your ears peeled.

It can be both but in my experience blanks for bumper DGWs usually come before , for small ones , it is 50/50

Depends on the rest of your team and your rank/position in MLs.

However, looking at form and fitness, it could be a good move. Costa looks back to previous year's displays last 2 matches and if the midfield start serving up chances then he should be getting some goals regularly.

Glad I got Alli in as 5th mid a few weeks ago.. Even if I've missed his points it stops me worrying about things like a Lukaku injury as I'll just have him coming off the bench anyway.

Saw you and a couple of others discussing the ESPN game yesterday - do you know if there's a FFS league? If not, are you interested in getting one together for the start of the second half? I'm happy to set it up, but didn't want to do it without checking with one of you guys first. Seems a few here are playing it...

If you own Kane/Ali have a look at next weeks fixture ie Sunderland, they play 3 away in a tight space Doo, AOA could pay off there even more handsomely.

Want some advice, here is my team. Thinking of playing bench boost and transferring in Hennessey for Randolph.

    Butland Randolph

    Koscielny Sagna Zouma Francis Walker

    Ozil KDB Mahrez Alli Arnautovic

    Kane Lukaku Ighalo

Thoughts? would you do it? I am just worried about rotation since the next round of games is midweek after the FA cup fixtures

If not, then I have a real benching headache, currently thinking Mahrez. Who would you bench?

hold your bench boost for double game weeks.

Defenders are just too unpredictable in the FPL system. everyone plays 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.

I suggest next season FPL makes them more expensive, and give 1 point for 60 mins without conceding even if a goal is conceded subsequently.

Gets their ppg and price closer to attackers.

Your overall aim is good but not sure about your projected way of achieving it. Maybe split the halves with 2pts for each clean half, with a bonus point for a full match.

Is anyone considering Wijnaldum again? I know he's burnt a lot on here (including me) but he's been shifted into the 10 which he has admitted is his preferred position. Am considering as a Ramsey replacement.

I benched him for his 14 point haul vs Liverpool. I think he could come good, just need him to stay in the 10 and for Newcastle's fixtures to turn.

He came on for me that match because my 4th mid was injured! I love the guy and is a great little player. If only the other around him other than Sissoko could play a bit better, he would get so many more points.

Also, my spelling let me down there, I was writing that if other Newcastle players could play a bit better like (or even near to) the level that Sissoko and Wij play, then Wij would be even more awesome and get more points!
