Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 30

Harry Kane’s armband battle with Sergio Aguero is becoming increasingly key to our Fantasy seasons. Bournemouth’s main men are already earmarked for 2016/17, whilst Everton’s progress to the FA Cup semi-finals looks set to play a significant part in our planning for the run-in.

The Player

A two-goal haul at Villa Park maintained Harry Kane’s recent momentum as Spurs keep the pressure on leaders Leicester.

After scoring only once in the first nine Gameweeks, there were fears that Kane was burnt out due to a summer playing for England’s Under 21s. With 18 strikes in the subsequent 21 league outings, Kane has emphatically answered the doubters and charged up the Fantasy rankings to spearhead Tottenham’s title tilt.

The recent return of Mousa Dembele seems to have helped smooth out a recent two-match barren spell. Tellingly, both Kane and Dele Alli failed to earn points in Gameweek 27-28 – which coincided with the Belgian’s enforced absence– but with Dembele back on board, normal service has resumed for the popular Fantasy pair. Kane has netted three of Spurs’ last four goals, whilst Alli has chipped in with a trio of assists.

Kane’s weekend double also came at a time when Sergio Aguero unexpectedly faltered away to Norwich. His recent levels of consistency suggest the Spurs man is now capable of rivalling the Argentine as an armband candidate in any given Gameweek and the captaincy competition between the pair is looking decisive to our run-ins.

Delving further into the data enhances Kane’s reputation as a Fantasy big-hitter. As a result of Aguero’s injuries, the duo have gone head-to-head in 22 Gameweeks so far this season – they have outscored each other on nine occasions and drawn the other four. In terms of both points per game (5.59 to 5.33 in Aguero’s favour) and percentage of Gameweeks with a goal or assist (46.6% to 45.4% to Kane) it’s clear that the Tottenham man is holding his own against a player many feel is peerless as a captaincy candidate.

Although Spurs have just eight matches remaining of the current campaign – thus reducing their appeal at a time where many sides are bracing themselves for one, two or even three double Gameweeks – Kane’s irresistible showings will have many thinking twice over parting company as he looks to continue his fine form and fire Tottenham to the title.

The Team

A 3-2 home win over Swansea took Bournemouth’s tally to ten points from the last four Gameweeks and all but clinched their top-flight survival.

The Cherries’ recent turnaround has been triggered by a change in formation thanks to the availability of Max Gradel and Josh King, with Eddie Howe’s decision to shift from 4-1-4-1 to a more attack-minded 4-4-1-1 proving pivotal.

Gradel’s return, in particular, seems to have offered last year’s Championship winners far better balance – they have now won four and drawn two of the seven matches that the Ivorian has started this term, including a victory over West Ham and draw against Leicester earlier in the season.

Whilst Gradel’s goal and assist against the Swans merely backed up his importance, there’s competition for Fantasy points within Howe’s flourishing midfield. King has notched in back-to-back matches thanks to his role in “the hole” and Matt Ritchie’s goal and five assists in the last seven suggests that the Scot has finally acclimatised to the top-flight.

With no double Gameweek on their agenda, though, and a dire run of matches that sees them face Spurs, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, West Brom and United in their final eight fixtures, investment in Bournemouth at this point may not be the wisest of decisions.

For next term, though, that midfield trio, along with the likes of Charlie Daniels and Benik Afobe, have already played their way onto our pre-season watchlists.

The Talking Point

Fantasy managers’ patience continues to be stretched to the limit as we eagerly await news of double Gameweeks. Despite the lack of fixture announcements, though, the weekend’s FA Cup results at least brought a little more clarity to the situation.

We now know, for example, that Watford’s Gameweek 35 clash against Norwich will need to be rescheduled as a result of the Hornets’ progress to the last four of the FA Cup.

Everton and Palace are also without a fixture in Gameweek 35 – the pair were due to go head-to-head that weekend but their respective progress to the semi-finals has also forced a postponement.

West Ham and United were already facing a blank that week, regardless of who progresses in their Upton Park replay – like Everton and Palace, they were due to square up that weekend, too.

Whilst Palace, West Ham, Watford and United are all set for two double Gameweeks apiece, then, Everton are bracing themselves for potentially three pairs of fixtures in a single Gameweek between now and the end of the season – a hectic scenario for Roberto Martinez’ men but one that could play a prominent part in Fantasy managers’ planning for the run-in.

Although the likes of Joel Robles, Ramiro Funes Mori, Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley and Aaron Lennon will jostle for our attentions as we look to fill our quota of Toffees, there’s no denying that the jewel in the Goodison crown is Romelu Lukaku.

Having netted in three of his last four league appearances, the Belgian’s weekend cup brace against Chelsea continued his fine form and served a reminder of his fixture-proof potential ahead of back-to-back clashes with Arsenal and United.

Lukaku is shaping up to be one of the chief protagonists for the remainder of campaign and with a single goal in six, Jamie Vardy is looking the most dispensable amongst our forward lines. Furthermore, with those extra fixtures strengthening his captaincy claim, the Belgian also offers us another armband contender to those willing to overlook Aguero and Kane, adding another variable to the twists and turns of this most unpredictable of seasons.

He's been relatively kind to us this season. I think it's to lure us into a false sense of security so he can spoil thousands of Triple Captain chips with a 3 point haul from a bonanza TGW.

he's probably one of the main reasons I've done well this season, getting on board early for his scoring streak GW 11 through 19 and looks like he's back to top form.... but still I think i'd be too scared to triple captain him!

What's the general consensus on goalkeepers over the last 9 weeks?

I'm lagging on DGW planning, and stuck with Butland and Hennessey. Stoke have been giving poor defensive returns lately. Anybody got any specific ideas on who they'll go with for the run-in?

Hard to say till fixtures get announced, but I'll probably be WCing for 33 and going with DDG and Mignolet.

        My reasoning:

Mignolet has STO in 33, a DGW in 34, and NEW in 35.
DDG would be benched in 33, has a DGW (CPL, AVL) in 35, and would be on my bench in 35 again.

Lovely plan but it's quite expensive, isn't it? At least 1m more than any of the current template pairings. Depends if you can put that extra dosh to better use.

It's a bit expensive, but as none of the really expensive players are doing much at the moment, I'm not sure that it matters so much. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Lingard outscored Sanchez and someone like Defoe or Martial outscored Kun in DGW 34.

As I'm not planning on targeting the big hitters especially, I think I can afford to pump a bit more cash into playing the fixtures and hopefully get more points that way.

If it works for you, go for it. When I have money to spend I'm always more likely to spend it on expensive forwards than I am keepers.

Every Hennessey fixture I see on their schedule looks like one CPL will concede in to be honest. Thinking of doing Butland -> Foster for NOR, sun over the next two then sort out both keepers with the WC

I have 2FT at the moment and nothing to spend them on, especially considering I'll be wildcarding in a few weeks anyway.

Considering maybe shifting Vardy but Palace are a bit crap and I don't see any standout replacements in the price bracket.

    Hi,

With a front 8 this week of Ali, mahrez, siggy, Sanchez, payet, Kane, aguero, vardy.
Would you say it's worth using AOA and going with just williams and Toby at the back?
Other defensive options are smith, bellerin and Sagna.
If I don't use AOA I'll most likely play Sagna and bench payet.
So worth using AOA or save for later in season? (all other chips & wc still intact if it matters).

    some wild card thoughts..

    1. Do u think now that arsenal only have the premier league to play for giroud + mertesacker (much cheaper at 5,2) will be nailed on? with those fixtures coming up it might be giroud time to perform

    2. Would u double up on arsenal defenders or midfielders? (that is if no giroud)

    3. city rotation on wildcard might hurt as if they progress tonight, as expected, and have a double week 34, and with little realistic chances for the premier league, pelle might rotate and concentrate on the champions league (next round 5-6 and12-13 april) This will see city play 8 fixtures in 25 days!

    4. ighalo ? 2 doubles to follow and vs norwich villa sunderland with the only drawback a possible rotation on the 2nd match of week 34 as the fa cup semis are the team's priority

i will appreciate some thoughts 🙂

      1. Giroud will probably start, but he is not nailed on if you ask me. Considering Sanchez is definitely starting and Giroud and Sanchez are kryptonite to each other I am tempted to say no. Also not a lot of BPS, and I'd rather have Lukaku. He also has 0 goals in 29 shots (lots of headed efforts though, which is more difficult).

Mertesacker will get you 6 points max so no.

      2. 2 defenders or 2 midfielders is too much. 1 midfielder + 1 defender is okay. I currently only have Ozil.

      3. Good point, I might have to ditch Silva.

      4. I would say no. Fa cup surely has priority since Watford are safe. Norwich and Sunderland have something to play for, but against Villa hell yeah.

Reckon I may have missed the boat already but is Willian > Siggy a no brainer for the next 2 GWKs?

    Butland
    Alderweireld Fuchs Williams
    Alli Mahrez Özil Willian
    Kun Kane(c) Vardy(vc)

    Subs: McCarthy Arnie Francis VVD
    2 FT / 3.0ITB

    Cheers

How nailed do we reckon Robles is now? Any Everton fans around here?

Got 2FT and nothing pressing this week, so considering Butland > Robles. Elliot covers the next two anyways with SUN and nor. But is a GK combo of Robles and Elliot too weak?

I don't think either is as good as Butland, so that's not a trade I'd want to be making

I definately agree, but Butland has an awful run from GW33 basically till the end of the season and Elliot covers none of those weeks. Robles/Elliot has a near perfect rotation, I'll get two GKs with DGWs for my BB and another two DGWs or a triple from Robles with Elliot covering GW35.

Worth mentioning I don't have my wildcard left, so this could be my only opportunity to get my keepers set for the season with blanks and DGWs in mind.

In fact he has two, which is what I'm looking for in a Butland replacement as he has none. But the thing is Robles has three extra games, so do I pick him or Gomes?

Looks great but the missus really wants a top beach.

As in a beach to lie on? Dalmatian coast is jaw dropping nut not a lot of sand.

As above, try western Crete or maybe Sardines.

Wow, looks absolutely banging. Yes, it needs to be a beach beach, so although the Dalmatian coast is looking like a top place, Crete is looking perfect.

For an experienced traveller like yourself it's interestingly remote too once you get out and about in a car. Lots of abandonment villages and "picturesque" locals. You also get roadside war museums, which are basically someone's barn stuffed full of WWII uniforms, tin hats, rifles, heavy machine guns, anti aircraft guns, light tanks etc that the elderly owner has collected from around the countryside over the years

in my humble opinion, you will find top beaches on the Island of Brac

Captain picks have been rubbish except Aguero's 5 goal haul versus Newcastle.

Gonna stick to captaining a player who plays against Villa each week.

    GW 31 - Siggy
    GW 32 - Costa
    GW 33 - Afobe
    GW 34 - Martial
    GW 35 - VVD
    GW 36 - Ighalo
    GW 37 - Winjanuyum
    GW 38 - Sanchez

I feel this will work better than aguero getting rested every other week for the champions league
