The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Manchester City

We continue our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 campaign, with an assessment of Manchester City.

To kick off, we analyse the team statistics at the Etihad and compare them to the rest of Premier League, before casting an eye over their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects ahead of the new season.

Hopes were high for City’s title challenge after finishing 2014/15 in second spot on a run of six straight wins. It’s fair to say that Manuel Pellegrini’s final year at the helm proved bitterly disappointing, though, after his side just managed to pip rivals United to fourth spot on goal difference, some 16 points behind champions Leicester.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Interesting, I'd prefer it if he plays off Aguero but with Silva & KDB I can't see that happening.

Can't be any worse than Navas surely.

City fans think he'll play in a front 3 and could even play central if Aguero gets injured/rested

Apparently had a couple of decent seasons goals and assists

On the watch list for now

KdB... He could play deeper and be as effective

I think he was brought to challenge sterling, competition. Nolito will probs start the season but sterling will come in at some point I think. I think nolito will do well, tbh when U have kdb and Silva in ur team, U should do well

Haven't seen many people on here considering payet in their midfields this season.

Is it the premium price tag he's bound to have?

Is it just the fact he doesn't have a place in our teams with other premium mids we want such as KDB, Hazard, possibly mkhi, mane etc.

Or are people putting him in?

In order preference of midfielders for me it is:

      KDB
      Mkhi
      Hazard
      Payet
      Mahrez

Liverpool & Arsenal midfields/attacks way too congested for me.

Depends on the price for sure, but things that would put me off are:

      A) Rotation. With CL games this year perhaps Ranieri will revert back to the tinkerman?

      B) Don't see Leicester doing as well this season

      C) Teams may have figured out a better way to stop Vardy/Mahrez.

      D) It would be very impressive if either player performs as well this year.

        A) There will be some rotation for sure but I doubt key players will be rested
        B) Disagree. Mid table team imo.
        C) True.
        D) Agreed.

B - We actually agree here, i see them finishing about 10th.

They are still good options if priced right but i can see both being around the 9m mark.. I think i would prefer KDB/Haz/Mik/ for around the same price, plenty of strikers to chose from as well.

      Who's Adomah?!

It's not bad. I'm struggling to see where all your cash went! I have Ibra, Kun, Mkhit, Haz, Xhaka all in one team! Can't believe how easy it is to get the big guns in sky

Adomah is one of the attacking mids for middlesborough. And i would argue that Ibra is overpriced considering his inexperience in the premier league, aguero is obviously good but I went for rooney who is cheaper and won't be that much worse, Ozil for sure over mkhit, and silva over Hazard as like for like they usually get the same points, whilst xkhaka is unproven.

For example, you've doubled up on Chelsea defence here, could easily change courtouis to de gea if you wanted

Smalling is nailed, shaw will be (injuring permitting) and Bailly should be. In terms of RB, that's more contentious

    Stepped out for lunch.

In reply to Spineless Weasel (JK?), spent a good afternoon having a sift through the fixtures and saw gw7/8 as a change in fixture strength for quite a few teams + international break for prices + slight advantage over gw3/4 WC as more info about deadline day signings etc gathered.

I've found in previous seasons that planning for a longer stretch and just throwing the WC in when needed usually ends up with getting off to a poor start

    1. Pasqualinho
      • 14 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

For me, it depends on the rules. If we're forced to have a Jan WC then GW3/4 is OK - if it's an anytime H2 WC then there's an awful long time between (for example) GW3 and GW35.

Hm. Don't see that as an issue for me, I usually take a fair few hits and am happy to do so again. The main thing I use a wildcard for is to get a defence sorted. Rarely use transfers on the back 7 unless there's a key injury

KDB could be very good, as I think he's more likely to play in the front 3, because he's far too wasteful with the ball to play deeper.

I reckon he could play a Douglas Costa-eque role.

          1. Van Klinkert Delarosa
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 9 months ago

            Douglas Costa-eque?

That's 4 goals and 14 assists, minimum. *draft KDB*

          2. MrMaverick
            • 7 Years
            7 years, 9 months ago

No, KDB will do the Muller role, get in the box etc. Nolito will do the Douglas Costa role, hug the touchline etc. It was Henry in the box at Barca, Pedro hugging the touchline. Pep's 4-3-3 predictable

            1. Wilshere Knowledge
              • 10 Years
              7 years, 9 months ago

Muller is a second striker, and KDB plays nothing like him.

Nolito is a 10/winger like Hazard, so is unlikely to be playing purely wide.

And Pep is the least predictable manager in world football. Played a 3331 against BvB in the German Cup final!

          7 years, 9 months ago

Looking at the squad, I can't quite make out what formation Pep will go for, but at this stage I'd wager on a 433, and Yaya could play in any position in the midfield 3, but whether he is a regular depends on whether he has a change of attitude.

He's a simple man, all he need is a piece of cake.

If he keep his last season price and his position in the team, he could be a nice differential, like early on last season.

The short answer is fans are entitled little so and so's who think the players owe them something because they play for the club they support . They are also deluded and believe they would act in a different manner if they were in the same situation .

At the end of the day it's a job - money spins it.

But by moving to China he's essentially killed any ambition of playing competitively, winning important trophies or playing for his country. You won't see any top players at the peak of their careers moving there.

I see where you are coming from but if important trophies are considered to only exist in england, spain, germany etc. then how will football ever spread beyond Europe?

Like I said before, I have absolutely nothing against China spending money and developing their leagues. I think its brilliant. But "top players" that move there are essentially retiring.

They can win trophies in Asia can they not? LKeague winners? Asain equivolent of the CL?

In the short term no but maybe in the long term people will be influenced by the money and it looks like they dont mind spending it.

Look at Chelsea and Man CIty, investment has made players become attracted to these clubs.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Winning a trophy doesn't mean it's a well respected, important or a competitive trophy. You can move to Celtic and with the SPL every season if you fancy trophies.

Chelsea and Manchester City were good platforms for investment as they play in the BPL and have the potential to take part in important European competitions.

China is many, many decades away and they're absolutely doing the right thing. Paying too much, but still trying to develop. But players that move there right now have no interest in "exploring cultures". They want to make their retirement money.

I disagree, winning a trophy is winning a trophy. Regardless where you are you have to beat whos put in front of you. Who decides what trophy is better than others? The PL gets the most money so winning that trophy is the best? BS!

So let me get this straight Arnautovic, Shaqiri, Cabaye arent at their respective clubs for the money? All three could easily be playing CL football across europe.

Yes, they are a long long way from being a global player but im certainly not adverse to it. In fact, I would encourage it.

For example.. APG moved to Tigres from Ligue 1. In his first season he won the league (for the first time in his career), was top scorer and player of the season in the Mexican league, and made it in to the France squad for the Euros. Now many people might disregard the Mexican league but that is undoubtedly a good career move for Big Mac.

Some moves turn out to be good, for sure. APG didn't move there for money though.

fwiw I don't think he should have been near the french squad

They are, but they are also there because it's a team looking to progress in a very competitive league. The Premier League is easily most exciting league in the world at the moment.

Why do you think Pep, Jose, Klopp, Conte, etc etc etc are not moving to China? They could earn triple there. They want to test themselves.

The PL gets most money because their TV deals attract the most attention. So people are willing to pay big money to watch how competitive it is.

Would you pay £30 a month to watch the Chinese league?

            Martinez 29, Yilmaz 30, Lavazzi 30, Ramirez 29, Texeira 26.

These players are younger than those who came to the PL when it started to grow in the mid-90s

I think it's a wait and see. He's had the longest year of any Arsenal player, and he'll get very little pre-season.

It also depends on another striker. If we get a striker who can run in behind, Ozil will be a much better prospect.

            I don't think so.

Copa ended a few weeks ago, and Sanchez missed 3 months last season, so he should be fine.
Ramsey missed a couple months last season, but certainly he could be a little tired.
Xhaka was suspended for a lot of last season. 😆
Giroud was rotated all last season, early subs etc, Should be fine.

Then Kos and Cech should be fine with their positions, Monreal had the summer off, Bellerin didn't do too much, like Wilshere, Coq and Caz have had the summer off, on top of Wally, Ox, Iwobi.

We should be fine I reckon. Only concern would Ozil and Ramsey early on, imo.

If you go to Berlin, there's a place opposite the bus station which does the most amazing bratwursts.

I'd happily go back just to have some! With fries and curry sauce.

You will get a good Bratwurst anywhere in Germany at any roadside Imbiss. 🙂
