Scout Report – Ahmed Musa

Having already secured the services of Ron-Robert Zieler, Luis Hernandez, Raul Uche Rubio and Nampalys Mendy in this transfer window, Leicester City broke their club record transfer fee earlier this month to capture forward Ahmed Musa for a reported £16 million.

The 23-year-old joins the Foxes from Russian side CSKA Moscow, and has penned a four-year deal with the Premier League champions. Speaking to the club’s official website, Musa expressed his delight at securing a move to last season’s surprise package:

“I feel very happy joining Leicester City, for me it’s one of the best clubs and I feel very happy. I joined because it’s one of the best clubs in the Premier League and they are like a family. That’s why I joined Leicester City and I’m very excited. I look forward to seeing the fans in the new season and I will do my best to make them happy.”

The History

Born in Jos, Nigeria, Musa started out at GBS Football Academy, and spent loan spells at Nigerian sides JUTH FC and Kano Pillars between 2008 and 2010. During the second of those temporary stints, Musa scored 18 goals in 25 appearances, breaking a league record.

He moved to Dutch side VVV-Venlo is 2010, producing seven goals and nine assists in 27 matches during the 2010/11 campaign as Venlo avoided relegation from the Eredivisie via a play-off. The following season saw Musa bag three goals and as many assists in 14 league appearances before joining CSKA Moscow in January 2012.

Over the course of four-and-a-half years in Russia, Musa served up 42 goals and 23 assists over 125 league outings and won three league titles. He also gained valuable Champions League experience, playing 24 matches in total, scoring six goals and adding four assists.

The 23-year-old made his senior international debut against Madagascar in August 2010, before scoring his first goal in a friendly against Kenya in March 2011. He featured in both the 2013 African Cup of Nations and the 2013 Confederations Cup, while he notably scored twice in Nigeria’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2014 World Cup. Musa has netted 11 times in 58 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

With Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri having to juggle domestic matters with a Champions League campaign this season, the Italian clearly needed to add both quality and depth to his squad. Musa certainly helps tick both of those boxes, with the Nigerian capable of playing both out wide and up front.

Ranieri mainly favoured a 4-4-1-1 formations last term, so it could be the places of Marc Albrighton, on the left of midfield, and Shinji Okazaki, in the support striker role, that will be most at threat from the arrival of Musa. It’s worth remembering the heavy burden that was placed on both Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy last season, with the versatile Musa likely to allow Ranieri to ease the strain on his star duo, particularly towards the end of matches.

Musa’s main attribute is his searing pace, while he also has the ability to dribble past defenders and put dangerous crosses into the box. Like many young attackers, his delivery can be slightly inconsistent, but one strength of his game is an ability to hold onto the ball and retain possession for his side. Essentially, he looks an ideal fit for the Foxes, then, who are at their most dangerous when counter-attacking.

Delving into Musa’s underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 34.9 minutes, which was better than Mahrez (36.4), and also compared favourably to Jamie Vardy (28.6), who played as a central striker. Okazaki and Albrighton, meanwhile, only managed a goal attempt every 45.3 and 66.4 minutes respectively. In terms of key passes, Albrighton perhaps surprisingly led the way, registering a key pass every 44.7 minutes, compared to Mahrez (45), Vardy (65.4), Musa (67.2) and Okazaki (103.7).

Our opinion of Musa as a Fantasy prospect also depends on his classification in Fantasy games and likely position under Ranieri. Given that he started 16 league matches for CSKA as a central striker last term, there’s every chance he could be listed as a forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), which would limit his appeal if he claims the left wing berth from Albrighton, for example.

Ideally, he’d come in as a midfielder, then, with a price of around 7.5, thus offering what is likely to be a cheaper route into the Foxes’ attack if, as expected, Mahrez and Vardy are promoted to the premium price bracket as expected.

The Nigerian will need to acclimatise to life in England first, though, and may be eased into life in the top-flight off the bench. It won’t be easy to displace either Albrighton or Okazaki in Ranieri’s first-choice starting XI either, given the contributions the pair made last season.

Leicester’s opening fixtures are fairly favourable, with home matches against Swansea and Burnley and a trip to Hull on the opening day looking potentially profitable for Foxes attackers. The champions do also face Arsenal and Liverpool in the opening five Gameweeks, though, which may deter initial investment in a player just settling into his new surrounds.

Ultimately, whilst Musa’s arrival looks good news for the champions’ prospects, his acquisition certainly strengthens the notion that we may now see Ranieri revert to “Tinkerman” mode in order to cope with a busy schedule.

This is getting ridiculous now, I need at least a month to play around with my team enough to ensure I start badly enough to need a GW2 wildcard.

It's going to be so weird seeing leicester in the champs league this year... We also have friday night premier league matches, and all these new managers & mad signings for huge money... Roll on 13th aug!

P.s. I really hope FPL don't muck up the game by adding more gimmicks or dramatically changing the scoring or rules etc... If it ain't broke don't fix it!

This season could really turn out to be one of the best yet playing FPL. Three new managers making their teams even stronger - plenty of options.

Relies on people staying fit but with most looking towards Aguero and Ibrahimovic already that could leave plenty of big striker differentials - Kane, Sturridge, Costa, Batshuyai, (Arsenal striker).

After banging in 20+ goals in the last 2 seasons, imagine having Kane as your differential? Could be gold.

I owned Wilson from the start last season and because he didn't do well straight away he lost value. I still got his haul but then he got injured shortly after. IIt does make it tricky to take on a relatively untested forward with reasonable ownership as they are probably more likely to lose value than many.

Why does FPL have the half rule for the increase in the Price of a player? what do they seek to achieve by it? as long as the same rule applies to everyone, why not keep it as 0.1 increase in price = 0.1 increase in SV. It will result in another tactical approach to the game. thats all

Even if they changed it they would only increase the amount of transfers needed to get a price rise otherwise it would be very hard in some cases to get in a player you wanted if you didn't own them straight away

      1. The Fantastic Mr Fox
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

getting the player is still difficult since the Price increases proportionate to the Net Transfers In. But making a profit off owning a good player early is affected, since you get only half an increase in SV

Discourages "day trading". Which would be bad for the game, prices are unstable enough as it is.

          7 years, 9 months ago

No. I just mean that the pressure to buy ahead of a rise and sell ahead of a fall would increase. It's bad enough already. The game is supposed to be about selecting the best team, not playing price games (although managing TV is a component of game strategy).

Prices rises are there to deter everyone from jumping on the same bandwagon by making the player more expensive to buy. Only getting half the gained value when selling should deter everyone from jumping off as soon as the player has a bad game. I think it's designed to reduce volatility a bit and to reward those that were "in" early.

  11. FPL Dullard XI - Early Thoughts
    J0E

    • 14 Years
    7 years, 9 months ago

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Early Planning for a Dullard XI.

Ahead of the launch of FPL I thought I’d ask for some help for all us dullards out there to ensure we have the most boring, but effective team possible.

Obviously this is tricky without knowing prices so there’s no budget, but obviously we can assume that the likes of Aguero will be pricey and those from promoted teams will be among the more budget friendly picks.

Also feel free to let us dullards know the best strategy.

To get us started here’s a few names and tactics to consider.

3-4-3 has to be preferred. Tried, tested and safe - ideal for a dullard.

First name out of the hat – Yaya Toure. The king of dullards, who at least early in the season should get starts. Boring but annoyingly effective.

Elsewhere in midfield a player like Darren Fletcher looks ideal for the 4.5m slot. That’s hoping he is once again that price. A playing 4.5m midfielder strategy is the ultimate in dullardicity.

Another midfielder to consider is one from Liverpool. No, not those interesting ones that look flashy like Mane or Coutinho. Instead James Milner gets a place – those occasional assists and bonus points make him the stuff of legend down at Dullard City Central.

In attack it has to be Aguero and Ibrahamovic. Two reliable old stagers who a dullard can safely captain one of every week. This completely negates the need for interesting captain picks. Gray takes the third striker spot due to solid and boring Championship stats.

At the back a nice cheap goalie, who makes lots of saves. A top dullard will be keeping an eye on save points – which propels Burnley stopper Tom Heaton into my thinking.

Elsewhere in defence a top dullard will want consistency. Step forward Koscielny for those reliable clean sheets and occasional goals. West Ham and Southampton look great as a rotation pair. But even rotation is risky for a dullard – instead why not just hedge your dull bets and play both. Reid gets the nod over the far more exciting Cresswell for the Hammers, while Fonte’s BPS skills take precedence over the interesting forward runs and penalty possibility of Bertrand.

So here’s my Dullard XI so far, with one blank as I couldn’t think of another midfielder to rival those three for sheer dullness..

    Heaton
    Koscielny Reid Fonte
    YToure Milner Fletcher XXXX
    Aguero Ibrahamovic Gray

With that in mind who are your top dullard picks?

Hard to admit but Yaya seems to lose his 'dullard' label this couple of season when he become more of 'differential', moving towards to 'maverick' day by day.

Agreed....Toure is more than a bit maverick. Like I say below, midfield is a struggle for Dullards.

I'd say Sigurdsson and Alli fit the bill.

Yaya will never be a maverick. 🙂

He's perhaps there as a symbolic mascot of all the others can achieve in the pursuit of dullness. Perhaps Mark Noble could be an able Yaya deputy?

The midfield is tough for dullards. Far too many exciting options in there 😉

That forward line may just be the template from the off is the pricing allows for a decent enough midfield.

Surely a West Brom defender or keeper has to be in the dullard XI?

C.S. at home,BPS magnet, never gets rotated, occasional goals and assists he is as dull as you can get.

Who do you see as this coming season's biggest over/under achievers?

I think if Koeman can hang on to Lukaku and Stones then Everton could well surprise a few people. I think they have the personnel, they just need Koeman's organisational skills, especially in defence.

I'm sure everyone will be surprised if Leicester can replicate last season's heroics but the one team i think might struggle to meet their targets is Liverpool. (sorry Liverpool fans, only an opinion) I'm not a big fan of squad rotation and Klopp seems to take this practice to the extreme. I realise with fixture congestion there comes a time when you might need to rest a player but i believe Klopp over does it big style.

I believe a settled team is far better than a new line-up every game. Look at Leicester last season. Did they win the league because they rotated less than any other team in the premiership? I think it certainly helped their cause but with Champions League this coming season i feel this time Claudio may need to rotate more than he would like to.

Klopp only rotated because they were in 3 competitions - 2 of them into the final. 3 games a week - you have to rotate.

There wasn't much rotation at the back and in centre midfield either barring injuries. Bear in mind with regards to Sturridge he was coming back from injury so had to be taken care of. Injuries played a major role also.

To add to this, rotation is only really an issue when you are talking about several players being swapped out every single match, players will come in and teams will be changed not just to give individuals a rest but primarily because different opposition requires a different approach. Personnel will change because it needs to often.

Sorry but I can see Liverpool in the top4.
Last year was a specimen, having to deal with Brodgers team and with a match every 2 to 3 days.. Add up to that the number of injuries.
This year, with 1 game per week, I can see them performing great. Klopp is not targetting star players and I'm with him in that. Forstly because of the over-rating / over-pricing of players. And LFC is not an interesting destination for them, due to lack of CL. Klopp is addressing the problem areas perfectly.
Some might think LFC need to get strikers, but with Origi turning world-class, Sturridge back to fitness and Danny Ings raring to go, I think it should be enough, with Firmino filling the void when needed.
My opinion can seem biaised because I'm a LFC fan but for me personally, Liverpool and Chelsea have an advantage which must be exploited. The new managers will take time to get their teams ready.

That and the manager. I'd say Chelsea's backline is probably better than ours although De Gea > Courtois, plus Smalling had a great season last year.

It's very close - I'd almost put it at evens as it stands but I'll give it to Chelsea just because of Conte.

I'm assuming he'll bring another player or 2 in.

              Darmian - Smalling - Jones/Bailly - Shaw

              vs

              Ivanovic - Terry - Zouma - Azpilicueta

As Demi says below - perhaps having Bonucci, Chiellini and Barzagli helped - they're brilliant defenders.

Kante + Matic in front of the Chelsea defence is going to help a lot though - no idea how they'll actually end up lining up.

Do you rate Morgan? I was so pleased when he came last year but I don't know what happened with him, I thought he was perfect for LVG tactics but the boy seem to fall by the wayside.

          • 13 Years

Schneiderlin? He is good but I think he needs a more natural defensive midfielder sitting next to him (Wanyama) and 2 CB's behind him (Fonte, Lovren) who play the ball into feet - Smalling doesn't do that. If United did sign a player in the Kante mould and improved a CB, they would get more out of Schneiderlin.

LvG never trusted him. He seemed to have his favourites who could play badly and still start, whilst the likes of Schneiderlin and Herrera had one bad game and weren't seen again for ages.
But at home with Schneiderlin on the pitch United conceded 5 goals

I hope the former. But I agree with Demi he is a box to box player not a DLP in the way Van Gaal used him. But I don't think Herrera and Schneiderlin is a powerful enough midfield. Herrera could potentially be a #10 I guess

Are Kante and Matic going to play as a two though?

You need a conductor in the double pivot which to me would be Fabregas.

If Conte plays a very negative double pivot then the only other place for Fabregas to play would be no.10.

I think United will be tighter defensively fwiw.

Assuming Chelsea play 3-5-2 this year... Baba gonna be first choice LWB?

Azpi to RWB and the 3 CBs made up of a combination of Terry/Cahill/Zouma/Ivan/New signing.

Realistically Baba has to play doesn't he? Ivan doesn't have the legs to be a RWB and surely Willian won't be shoehorned into the RWB role, meaning Azpi has to shift to the right side and Baba has to play LWB?

I see most people are predicting United to do well this season. Anybody out there who think they will struggle for top 4?

Yes, Mourinho, Zlatan and Ibra are great additions but they still have the likes of Young, Valencia, Carrick, Fellaini, aging Rooney, Lingard etc.

Their first 11 is good enough but the back up players? Need to shift them all imo

Any news of a site update before the season starts, was a rumour of getting time stamps on the mobile version?

Goodbye Kante, hello Musa. We take a look at #LEI's versatile new midfielder

    He's a forward?

Pity, a mid classification might have been an option.

Yup - mostly a forward it seems. Although think he has played on the right/left wing / Hazard type role - but mostly as a forward

Who's going to be alongside Dann this year? Tomkins or Delaney?

Can't see Tomkins moving from West Ham bench to Palace bench.

      Smart money is on Tomkins.

Really? I would have said it was on Delaney

Yea Delaney pushing on a bit now and there's always a mistake in him, don't get me wrong I like Damiam but I don't think Tompkins has been brought in to be benched, possible there may be some rotation there too but that was certainly an area Palace needed to improve on.

Do we know whether Hazard will be back on pens after last year's fiasco? Think that's a significant part of his appeal

      I'd love to know this.

I'm really torn between him, Ozil and Mkhitaryan at the moment.

      You'll likely do better.
Avoid the run up here and that fashionable 3rd striker pick who does nothing and the new defender signing that ends of not starting.

Broad takes last 2 Pakistan wickets quickly. England need 283 to win. Game on.
