Scout Report – Christian Kabasele

Earlier this month Watford confirmed the signing of Belgian defender Christian Kabasele, who joins from Genk for a reported £5.8 million.

Arriving on a five-year deal, the centre-half was afforded an extended summer break due to Belgium’s involvement in Euro 2016 before making his debut as a second-half sub in the 3-1 friendly win over Union Berlin last Tuesday evening.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website earlier this week, the defender reckons his style of play should help him acclimatise to his new surrounds:

“I am expecting the rhythm and the level to be very high. It’s going to be difficult but I have to work hard for this. I have good speed and I’m strong in the challenge. Also with the head I scored some goals last year with Genk. I will also try to improve all my weak points to be a complete player and to help the team have a good season.”

The History

Born in Lubumbashi, Zaire, Kabasele began his career at Belgian second division side Eupen, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2008. The following season he was part of the side that won promotion to the Belgian Pro League – in his first spell at the club, he made nine appearances in all competitions.

During the 2010/11 campaign, Kabasele was sent out on loan to fellow Pro League side Mechelen, where he played four times, scoring one goal.

In August 2011, the Belgian defender joined Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad for an undisclosed fee. Although he was part of a side that won a league and cup double, registering three goals and an assist in 11 appearances, Kabasele returned to Eupen ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

Over the next two seasons, Kabasele would cement himself as a regular, playing 41 matches and scoring six goals, impressing enough to earn himself a move to Genk in the summer of 2014.

Kabasele’s career has continued in an upward trajectory over the past two years, with an impressive seven goals and one assist accrued over 81 appearances for Genk. Standing at six foot once inch tall, the Belgian looks to have strong athleticism, and also the physical attributes in which to make the step up to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has represented Belgium at every youth level from Under 18 upwards and notably scored five goals in 10 matches for the Under 19s. Kabasele has yet to make his senior debut, although he was a member of Marc Wilmots’ Euro 2016 squad.

The Prospects

The Watford defence was one of the most resilient budget rearguards around last term after keeping 11 clean sheets (eight at home) but, following the departure of Quique Sanchez Flores, the slate has very much been wiped clean.

Intriguingly, new boss Walter Mazzarri has started with a 3-5-2 formation in all three of the Hornets’ opening summer friendlies, though also utilised a four-man backline later in their first fixture.

Should, as expected, the Italian opt to play with three at the back, the likes of Jose Holebas, Allan Nyom and new boys Juan Camilo Zuniga and Brice Dja Djedjemay are likely to battle it out for the wing-back berths – all four are priced at 4.5 and look valid value options if they can nail down a regular role.

Frustratingly, Kabasele’s goal scoring record of 12 strikes over the last four seasons has earned him a price of 5.0 in FPL – that’s costlier than any Watford defender and on a par with Heurelho Gomes, who made more saves than any other goalkeeper last season, and also registered three penalty stops.

Granted, he is expected to command a regular role in the heart of defence as he battles it out with Craig Cathcart, Miguel Britos and Sebastian Prodl for a starting spot, though his price tag looks prohibitive – particularly if Mazzarri continues with a 3-5-2 and settles on his preferred wing-backs.

Certainly, Watford’s opening fixtures (sot, CHE, ARS, whm, MUN) will certainly also deter any initial investment in their main men, with points at either end of the pitch likely to be hard to come by in the early weeks of the season.

With some uncertainty over how Watford will line up at the back under Mazzari, FPL bosses will likely take a watching brief over the opening month of the Premier League season to evaluate the strongest route into the Hornets backline.

After that, though, a very favourable between Gameweeks 6 and 10 (bur, BOU, mid, swa, HUL) could well bring their cheap defenders onto our radars. Kabasele’s lofty valuation – relative to his backline team-mates – suggests he faces a real struggle to earn any investment unless he can make an immediate impact in and around the opposition box.

    Southampton 4⃣️-0⃣️ PEC Zwolle

    Notes
    - Redmond very impressive, playing on the wing, worked very hard and looks a good pick.
    - Austin and Rodriguez were average up front together with a few good chances created, and often switching flanks. Rodriguez as a 6.5 midfielder is one to keep in mind.
    - Van Dijk was stonewall and the backline looked unstoppable in every area.
    - The midfield three were very impressive and worked hard.
    - 2nd half was drab with the reserves on. Seemed like the aim was not to concede and had very few big chances or attacks.

⭐ players: van Dijk, Targett, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Redmond.

Southampton 1st half (4-4-2): Gazzaniga; Martina, Yoshida, van Dijk, Targett; Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Romeu Redmond; Rodriguez, Austin.

2’’ Clasie is on the end of a heavy challenge and earns a free just outside the box. Ward-Prowse takes it and forces a fine save from the Zwolle keeper who turns it away for a corner.
3’’ Targett takes the resulting corner and it meets the head of van Dijk who heads wide.
14’’ Austin calmly slots the ball home for the opener after a superb low through ball from Romeu down the middle finds the striker. ⚽
16’’ Another great chance as Redmond feeds the ball through to Rodriguez but the keeper is out quick to beat the striker to it.
18’’ Heavy challenge from Ward-Prowse and he is booked. ⚠️
21’’ Fantastic through ball from Rodriguez that puts Austin one on one with the keeper. The keeper challenges and looks to take Austin down without getting the ball, but the referee waves on and says no penalty.
29’’ Gazzaniga is forced to make his first save of the game. ♜
43’’ After defending a wave of pressure from Zwolle successfully, Southampton finally get a chance once more. Ward-Prowse’s corner meets Austin’s head but goes wide.
44’’ And like that Southampton score. Targett makes a run up the left wing and sends a ball into an off-the-ball Ward-Prowse. With a flick, Ward-Prowse sends it on to Austin who controls it with his chest before selflessly giving it to Redmond to finish off into the bottom left corner. ⚽
46’’ It’s Redmond again who makes a fantastic solo run after receiving the ball from Martina. In truth the finish isn’t anything spectacular and the keeper should do better, but nonetheless he doubles his tally for the game. ⚽

Southampton 2nd half (4-3-1-2): Gazzaniga; Valery, Jones, Stephens, Mcqueen; Hesketh, Reed, Hojbjerg; Olomola; Gallagher, Isgrove.

57’’ McQueen tries to sneak it into the near post with a cheeky shot but the keeper is aware and tips it out for a corner.
71’’ Hesketh subbed for Turnbull. ↩️
84’’ Gazzaniga is forced to make a great save after a terrible backpass from Stephens. ♜
88’’ Hojbjerg makes a super run past two players into the opposition’s box before being bundled over and barged in the back. Penalty! He takes it himself and slots it home. ⚽

    Match rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Defense a little weak, but the rest looks pretty good to me. Maybe bring Mahrez down to a 9M and Courtois down to a 5M and use the 1M to strengthen Def a little. Overall it looks like a good first draft though.

Bojan wasn't in the Stoke team for long spells last season. Massive doubt over whether he will start, and you can't have that given the Capoue selection. Someone else.

At 13m Aguero is far too expensive in my opinion.

Last season he accumulated 184 points.

Bellerin and Alderweireld at 6.5m each totaled 338 points between them. Thats an additional 154 points for your money!

I know where my first 13m is going to be spent!

First of all, I agree that Aguero is too expensive and I won't be picking him.

        BUT

        1) He missed quite a few minutes (from memory he played almost 1000 less than Kane and scored the identical (?) number of goals

        2) Younwont be captaining Bellerin of Alde

If you captained Aguero every game last season he
would have earned you 368 points.

If you captained Bellerin every game you would have got 346 points.

So for the extra 6.5m outlay you would have made an extra 22points.

            You are missing the point!

They didn't play an even number of games.

You will not captain Bellerin every week, or indeed any week, unless perhaps a double.

Great point and you can spend the 9 million on a striker that you were going to spend on the two 4.5 million defenders.

So now you get Bellerin, Alderweireld and lets say Lukaku, Giroud or someone of that ability.

You do lose the captain points of Kun tho.

Yeah, looks pretty good. I thought about Aguero and then using a 9M instead of Ibra like Batshuayi or Lukaku too to get 4 solid mids, but I just hate not knowing and have Ibra come out and get a hat trick his first game out since it is Bournemouth and he is likely out to prove a point.

I personally think he is cheap at 5.5
A lot of pace, can be deadly with crosses and cutting in.

the problem with Cedric is he wasn't nailed on last season and when you go cheap at the back you wanna make sure you have nailed players as you will be rotating them in and out a lot, if you have a player like Azpil or Toby you can pretty much play them every week.

Consider switching Miralles for Bojan, take the extra 0.5M and you have options to upgrade one of the Def from 5 to 5.5, which there are quite a few options at that point. Cedric is fine for now, but watch preseason, and maybe check out Moreno possibly. If he is nailed he is a good deal at 5M imo. My 2 cents...

If he plays 3 cb's I think it would still mean that Fab can venture forward.

I've got Mkh from one and Costa from the other.
A lot of unknowns with Zlatan and Rooney, I'de rather be late to the party then early I think

Yh that's probably the most secure choice. I just really want Hazard in, it's the lack of bonus and yc' that deter me from Costa, but at the same time he will score way more goals than Rooney.

                    He always starts well,
last season was an anomaly because of his weight, if he stays, he's a steal for 9.5

I keep thinking of Hazards 3 bonus per goal, a goal to Haz is what a cleanie to Williams is bonus wise. But then I'm lumbered with Rooney. So tough

Juve are the winners here. Selling a player they got for free, for £100m - then signing a world class striker.

Juve have done some very good business here and I am sorry Utd fans but it's a very bad piece of business from Utd.

Unless Pogba comes in and sets the PL on fire like Suarez did he will be slated (more so by the media).

He is an amazing player, but I wouldn't call him world class, and even with inflation 100m is lubricious for someone who is not world class.

I just can't get my head around it to be honest.

Or selling a world class 23yo with his best years ahead of him, and spending almost all of it on a world class 29(?)yo.

Hardly incredible stuff, they're also losing a world class player, or is he average now because it's Man Utd?

I don't think anyone is a winner, but if someone is it's Napoli. Agreed.

They'll probably spend a fraction of that fee on Corentin Tolisso and one or two others now.

What does his previous fee have to do with it... also in marketing terms he's worth millions in shirts, advertising, sponsors and fan generation never mind his exploits on the pitch... anyway it's not as if United are strapped for cash (I doubt they even have a budget) and the fee doesn't affect any of us so I really don't see your point?!

Highest ppg for any 4.5m mid in the game. I understand why you picked him.

I think Højbjerg or Capoue may give you more though. Capoue seems more attacking under the new manager, and we just saw what kind of runs Højbjerg can make...

Classified as a defender last year so PPG is misleading. Plus a waste of a Sunderland spot.

Maybe but 4-2-4 is misleading. It's about as accurate as it would be to say Italy played 3-3-4 in the Euros. It won't be 2 out-and-out strikers plus 2 out-and-out wingers with little or no defensive responsibility. And that's what people tend to think 4-2-4 would be.

Realistically it probably won't be far off the 4-2-3-1 Chelsea played last season but with a more attacking player in the #10 role. Rather than someone like Oscar who was basically playing like a CM but 10 yards further forward.
