Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-up

David Moyes wins his first match in charge at Sunderland, Jordan Mutch continues Crystal Palace’ unbeaten summer run and Middlesbrough cruise to victory in the Spanish sun.

Here’s the latest from a low-key day of action…

Stade Nyonnais 0 Sunderland 2

Two penalties from Duncan Watmore handed David Moyes his first win as the new Sunderland manager blooded eight Academy players.

Watmore, priced at 5.0 and listed as a midfielder in the official Fantasy Premier League game, was used up front as Jermain Defoe missed the match with a niggle.

As highlighted in our Budget Midfielder article, Watmore could offer great value if he is deployed in advanced positions by Moyes, and he did his case for a forward berth no harm in Switzerland.

He earned the first penalty himself and slotted home the second just before half-time following a foul on George Honeyman.

Moyes recalled Billy Jones and Lee Cattermole after they recovered from minor knocks and fielded Jack Rodwell as a makeshift centre-half, but otherwise used his more senior players sparingly in the hot Alpine conditions.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Ledger, Rodwell (J Robson 46), T Robson (Borini 76), Cattermole (N’Zogbia 46), E Robson, Honeyman (Van Aaanholt 76), Gooch (Khazri 76), Watmore (Asoro 64), Greenwood (Lens 76).

Colchester United 0 Crystal Palace 1

Jordan Mutch’s sweet strike from a Jason Puncheon assist made it three straight pre-season wins for Palace.

Alan Pardew gave 20 players a run-out and, having trialled a 3-5-2 in the previous friendly, opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Connor Wickham as the lone striker supported by Andros Townsend, Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie, who managed just under 60 minutes in his first start of the summer.

Mutch and Hiram Boateng anchored the midfield and Pardew gave Alex McCarthy the full 90 minutes in goal.

Wilfried Zaha, James Tomkins, Bakary Sako and James McArthur all missed out, with Pardew confirming pre-match:

”They just have minor knocks that they’re not really ready for the game, so we’ll see how they are on Wednesday ahead of Wimbledon.”

Crystal Palace XI: McCarthy, Ward, Dann (Kelly 70), Delaney (Croll 70), Fryers (Binnom-Williams 78), Boateng (Jedinak 59), Mutch (Ladapo 85), Puncheon (Lee 59), Bolasie (Kaikai 59), Townsend (Berkeley-Agyepong 70), Wickham (Campbell 45).

Middlesbrough 2 Al-Ahli 0

Middlesbrough ended their time in southern Spain with a 2-0 win over Saudi champions Al-Ahli.

Second half goals from David Nugent and a fine individual strike from Julien de Sart sealed the victory for Aitor Karanka’s team.

Viktor Fischer provided the assist for Nugent’s goal, with Karanka again using the Danish international winger in the No10 position, although he later partnered Nugent in attack.

Eleven changes were made for the final 20 minutes, with Alvaro Negredo and Jordan Rhodes used up front, and Karanka also experimented by deploying left winger Adam Reach as a full-back as he seeks cover for first-choice left back George Friend.

The coach was happy enough with his side’s Spanish trip, saying:

“We have three weeks to fix one or two things. We still need players like Dani Ayala to recover – I don’t think Grant (Leadbitter) will be ready – but it’s good that we have three weeks to work at home.”

Centre-half Ayala, who has not featured in pre-season due to an ankle injury, is still ‘a week to 10 days’ away from selection, Karanka added.

Middlesbrough XI: Konstantopoulos (Mejias 70), Nsue (Barragan 70), Baptiste (Morris 70), Jackson (Gibson 70), Reach (Friend 70), Forshaw (Clayton 70), De Sart (de Roon 70), Stuani (Ramirez 70), Fischer (Negredo 70), De Pena (Adomah 70), Nugent (Rhodes 70).

So I'm going for an early wildcard before Gameweek 4 during the international break so here's my team set up for the first 3 -

    Hart-4.0
    Shaw-Friend-Souare-Evans-4.0
    KDB-Mahrez-Mkhi-Ayew-Capoue
    Aguero-Long-Negredo

I usually find myself as a very conservative FPL player who almost NEVER needs his wildcard (I didnt use one of my two last season) so I'm trying to get ahead in the first 3 weeks and once the season kicks in properly, we have more info on line ups, bandwagons start to appear and Payet, Ozil etc. are back, I'll just watch my Value soar.

Remember, RMT only for the first 3 weeks!! Thanks in advance

Negredo is a rotation risk with Rhodes.

Long will probably play all 3, but may get the odd early sub due to Europa qualifying.

      Like the midfield.

      Souare potentially not nailed.

I'd downgrade Hart to Valdes, KDB to 7.5 (City have CL qualifying in gw2 and 3), and upgrade a striker to 9.0 and maybe a defender too

Thinking the same this year, price rises are crazy gw4
      Hart> foster
      Evans> VVD/ baines
      0.5 short for azpi(first choice)
I've got same team apart from above changes and kdb+negredo > Willian+ lukaku(+azpi)

Guys I'm really stuck between taking
    Keane or mee
    And
    Ayala or friend.
Keane has 5 goals in 55 appearances and Ayala has 6 in 4t appearances! They seem like great picks. But mee and friend seem more nailed?
The extra .5 savings don't bother me, I'm looking for the 2 with the most attacking potential....?

Ayala and Keane are just as nailed as Friend and Mee. It's just whether you think they're worth the extra cash or not.

I'm not sure about mee and friend's attacking potential, ie assists and frequency of crosses into the box. I could be swayed to mee in order to save .5, after all he has scored in preseason. But Ayala's goals to games record is like a central midfielders!

I'm favouring the latter as it avoids the double up of KDB and Kun.

Doubling up those two can of course be great but wouldnt perhaps do it for the start of the season.

I believe their pride is at a point where they refuse to follow the rest of the league because of how successful their policy used to be.

Shame that. Arsene just doesn't want to buy big even if the opportunity arises. He wants the value he sees fit.

They are also astonishingly passive in the market. Nowhere near as ruthless as they need to be.

        I think you are right.

Wenger built an amazing team on a very low budget compared to the rest of the league and wants to do that again. But times change and it's so hard to get another Vieira/Anelka/Henry.

If course, Arsene could just say that Mahrez and Vardy cost next to nothing, and look what happened there.

That's a deceiving stat if true as Arsenal spent most of that on one player in a position that they are relatively well stocked

They still haven't strengthened their main weaknesses of central defence and centre forward- if giroud or koscielny misses large periods they may well be in trouble

Also after signing wijnaldum surely Liverpool have a higher net spend at this point? I imagine man city will overtake Arsenal for net spend too and potentially Everton if they chose to spend- these are their main rivals who are strengthening

Manonne likely to start season but pickford will be putting pressure on him all the time.

I have heard rumours that Napoli are interested in Manonne, so that would solve a lot of problems. Pickford is a great keeper. Just needs his chance.

Yeah mine hasn't changed much at all since it opened

Just have a defender, two midfielders and 3rd striker spot to play around with.

27.5 for the 4 spots but have a small pool of players that will fit the bill. Just wanna see how preseason goes first

It's a silly idea. Surely it only congests still further other parts of the season.

It only works if they reduce the number of games (teams) or extend the length of the season. Teams already have problems fitting games in.

For me christmas games are so exciting fpl and just in general

To see the christmas schedule go would be awful news. Alot of European clubs use the winter break as a money earner anyway playing friendlies against each other

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

Yeah...a point that is often forgotten. What they should do is scrap off some of those daft international friendlies. They're meaningless twaddle that I've yet to see a shred of evidence from that they improve international teams.

        1. ⭐ Bemba_Da ⭐
          • 14 Years

I totally agree with the international friendlies, they are pointless because more often than not the key players will pull out of the games. It's all a money making exercise Wakey.

With the winter break is you will have a few friendlies before the winter break begins in order to get players back to full fitness and some clubs will want to make the most of it commercially so will end up jetting off to play pointless games

          I couldn't agree more.

Plus all international qualifying games should be played in a mini tournament at the start of the summers when there are no regularly tournaments. So it takes less friendlies to try to make teams cohesive while simultaneously giving the teams tournament practice.

Too much money in midfield. I know it's tempting, but you need to go for another big striker imo. It's all about team balance. KDB to someone (Lukaku?) as you already have Kun.

        Thanks,

I am not convinced with Lukaku post Euro burn and I feel the other premium strikers (Costa, Kane, Vardy etc.) as well as a 5.5-6.5mil mid will be outscored for the first few weeks compared to a premium midfielder as well as Grey, Long, Wilson etc.

There is no doubt that once the premium strikers hit form and or fixtures I will work them in.

Think the KDB Aguero double is a good ploy as I think they will score a lot of goals in all of their opening fixtures (bar Joses Army.)

You would probably get more answer if you sort the players that figures in all of the teams out. That being said, I think all of them could need some work. 1 - Not liking the midfield + rhodes. 2 - Would change keeper, and Rooney maybe. 3 - This looks the best for me, not sold on Bellerin, too expensive with his opening fixtures, and injured defenders.

That is correct. However the French is obviously an easier league, he was also on the strongest team that dominates possession, creates most chances, and has the strongest squad BY A MILE. Now he is in a tougher league, not the best squad in the league, more competitive. This all means less chances and as a result less goals! IMO lol

Sure, but he's pure class. Payet was top assister in Europe 14/15, then he joined the PL and carried on his form.

      How many were penalties?
How many teams are realistic title-challengers in that league?
How different is Ligue 1 to the Premier League?
How quickly will he adjust to the PL, at the age of 34?
Can his points return justify his pricetag?

These are all things to consider

          Not to mention European games

Fixture congestion is arguably the worst in England, especially December/ January. Could be worn out if he's used too much by then.

I expect him to get most of his points from September ---> start of December

All good points but plenty of top players have continued their form once coming over from France.
No, he's not going to score 38 goals, but he'll surely bang in countless goals. Plus, with Mkitaryan, I can see plenty of penalties.

        1. Bøwstring The Carp
          • 12 Years

I'm not saying he'll be bad but a few arguments for me not having him are:

          1) Yes the likes of Payet and Ayew came over and succeeded but they are both younger and coming from poor teams, hence showing why they are a pick of the bunch in France. Zlatan is playing in a top team already, it's too hard for me to say if it's him as a result of the 38 goals or the fact he plays with the best team in France with no competition. Stick the likes of Andy Carroll in that PSG team and I'm sure he'd bag at least 20-25 in a season.

          2) For me it's a matter of Aguero v Ibra. For players that price you have to captain them the majority of the time to justify their price. If I own both I can only (C) one of them, meaning half the time their value is suffering from not captaining them.

          3) United are still under transition with a new manager. I'll have a look at them in the Charity Shield but I expect them to take a few weeks in the PL to show any sign of cohesion. By which United's tasty fixtures will have past.

All speculation but I'm staying clear for now.

MrMaverick was right about that, so apologies. The stream I was watching had no commentary so I had to just go by my own judgement of what the formation looked like.
