Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to net in his first appearance under new Man City boss Pep Guardiola. Chuba Akpom and Joel Campbell grab a goal apiece as Arsenal defeat an MLS All-Stars team, whilst a Mark Noble penalty isn’t enough as West Ham fall to defeat in the Europa League qualifiers.

AT&T All-Stars 1 Arsenal 2

Chuba Akpom struck late, from a Nacho Monreal cross, to secure victory for Arsenal over a star-studded MLS team.

Joel Campbell opened the scoring in the first half, converting a penalty he had earned himself, before a certain Didier Drogba came off the bench to score his usual goal against the Gunners.

With Per Mertesacker missing the start of the season with a knee injury, Gabriel sidelined due to illness and Laurent Koscielny yet to return to action, Arsene Wenger handed a debut to new singing Rob Holding at the heart of the defence. Petr Cech and Jack Wilshere were also given their first run-outs of pre-season and Theo Walcott started up front.

Wenger then made five changes at half-time, with Hector Bellerin and Granit Xhaka, playing for the first time since Euro 2016.

The more pertinent events seem to be happening off the field, with reports that the Gunners are close to signing Leicester midfielder Riyad Mahrez. Although he refused to discuss an transfer targets, Wenger confirmed he is determined to bolster his options in the final third:

”At the moment, I do not have too many attacking options. Let’s not forget that there are still a few players at home, and that a few players didn’t play today, like Cazorla. Then of course you have Ozil and Ramsey at home, even Giroud is not here. We have options, but we still look outside to find one more”.

The Arsenal boss also took time to praise the performance of Holding – priced at 4.5 in FPL – in the heart of defence:

“He has adapted surprisingly in a very good way. He reads the game well and understands what’s going on. He anticipates well and that’s a quality, at such a young age, that you don’t find a lot”.

Arsenal XI: Cech (Martinez 67), Debuchy (Bellerin 46), Gibbs (Monreal 46), Holding, Bielik (Xhaka 46), Campbell (Reine Adelaide 67), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Willock 67), Elneny (Zelalem 67), Coquelin (Chambers 46), Wilshere (Iwobi 46), Walcott (Akpom 67).

Man City 1 Borussia Dortmund 1 (City win 6-5 on penalties)

Pep Guardiola oversaw a win, of sorts, as stand-in goalkeeper Angus Gunn excelled in a penalty shoot-out victory over Dortmund.

The side was decidedly more senior than the one that took the field against Bayern Munich, and Guardiola took the chance to start with an experimental formation involving three centre-halves – Nicolas Otamendi, Aleksandar Kolarov and Tosin Adarabioyo – and Gael Clichy and Jesus Navas used as wing-backs.

Dortmund had the better of the first period, but the introduction of yet more first team regulars among eight changes at the break galvanised City.

On came Yaya Toure, David Silva, Wilfried Bony and Sergio Aguero as Guardiola reverted to a back four and watched his team exert a measure of control that led to Aguero’s 76th minute tap-in from a Silva pass.

Jason Denayer was also given his first run-out of the summer, as was new signing Nolito, who came on as a late sub for Toure.

An even later equaliser then sent the match into penalties as half-time substitute Gunn enjoyed his moment of glory.

One player who covered himself in rather less glory was unused sub Samir Nasri – the first official ‘victim’ of Guardiola’s new stand against overweight players.

The City boss issued an update on the Frenchman, who has yet to feature due to fitness concerns:

“Samir arrived a little bit overweight but he’s much much better now. Still there is a little bit of weight. Last season he was injured and we want to avoid that. The players that are on the pitch they are fit, their weight is in the right place to arrive at many minutes like Tosin [Adarabioyo] today or like Fernandinho or like Kolarov and all the other ones. But hopefully in the next two weeks he will be right with us.”

Man City XI: Caballero (Gunn 45), Clichy (Maffeo 45), Otamendi (Denayer 45), Adarabioyo, Kolarov (Angelino 64), Fernando (A.Garcia 45), Delph (Toure 45 sub: Nolito 84), Fernandinho (c), Zinchenko (Silva 45), Navas (Bony 45 sub: Sterling 84), Iheanacho (Aguero 45).

NK Domzale 2 West Ham1

West Ham emerged from their first competitive fixture of the season with a vital away goal and serious concerns about their defence.

The Hammers were outplayed for large swathes of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg in Slovenia, and only a superb late double save by Adrian kept the scoreline the right side of manageable.

Coach Slaven Bilic had to watch the match from the stands as he serves a UEFA touchline ban, and the view from there was not a good one – with Aaron Cresswell out for four months with a knee injury picked up against Karlsruhe he was forced to play Sam Byram out of position at left back while using Michail Antonio on the opposite flank.

The latter struggled throughout, perhaps raising question marks over his ability to nail down a role in Bilic’s defence. Antonio lost possession in the lead-up to Domzale’s first goal, when Havard Nordtveit was adjudged to have handled in the area, and was way out of position when the hosts regained the lead early in the second half.

In between those two strikes Mark Noble converted a penalty after Winston Reid had been flattened by Domzale’s goalkeeper Axel Maraval, but West Ham were second-best for most of the night, betrayed by an understandable lack of sharpness and a defence that failed to work as a unit.

New signing Sofiane Feghouli was one of the few positives for the Hammers, attacking with real potency and providing excellent set-piece deliveries in the absence of Dmitri Payet, but he faded markedly after the break – much like the rest of the team.

After the loss, assistant boss Nikola Jurcevi gave an update on injured duo Gokhan Tore and Manuel Lanzini ahead of next week’s return leg:

It’s difficult to say which players will play because Gokhan Tore was injured in training on Monday and he must have a scan. Tore has hurt his knee, but we are not sure how serious, It was a very easy training, but after five minutes he felt some pain in his knee. He will have a scan on Friday and we hope it will not be serious. With (Manuel) Lanzini, we don’t have exact information. He will come back from America, where he wanted to play in the Olympic Games for Argentina. We don’t know, but we think he will not be fit for the next game against Domzale.”

West Ham XI: Adrian, Antonio (Quina 80), Nordtveit, Reid, Byram, Obiang, Kouyate, Feghouli, Noble, Valencia, Carroll.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic - Transfer wish list

We've not even hit August yet and Premier League clubs have already signed 71 players since the end of last season.

With 16 days left until GW1 are there any rumored transfers you'd like to see go through, or any you wouldn't? Is there a certain player you want to move so they get minutes? Or is there simply a gap at a club that you'd like to see filled?

Mahrez is an interesting one - at Leicester he will likely be the main man again but is he such a good choice at Arsenal?

Stones to Man City has already been debated a lot on FFS - a divisive transfer with some thinking he'll be straight in the team and others assuming he's going to be warming the bench a lot.

Benteke at Palace will be a great FPL asset.
However, not too keen on Pogba.. FPL wise I don't see him having many fans, + the transfer fee is out of proportion.

The best transfer from an FPL point of view is an under-priced asset from a big team moving to a smaller team where he'll play every week. Now that the prices are fixed, anyway. So, Mata to Everton, Wallcott to somewhere like Palace or Swansea, things like that.

Has anyone else realised that the ICT index is now public info on fpl in the drop down menu along with each individual value ie influence/creativity/threat?
Also theres a stats page which shows Clearances/Blocks/Shots etc... all member's info.. will that be updated every gameweek?
Are these the same stats from the members area now made public?
Also is the fixture difficulty in fpl based on the member's ticker or is it some other algorithm?
About to renew my membership and i'd like to know if the general public is going to get the same info as me 🙂

Nevermind. i'm gonna assume no one knows anything/wants to say anything since this is the 3rd time of asking and being ignored 🙂 .. I really miss the old small community/become a member to support the site days.

perhaps you're right. I think the stats available for members are amazing but then it depends on what you're looking for. I don't really look into stats like most people here but being active when I can is how I can contribute

I tried that gk strategy last season with Cech and it didn't really work tbh. ARS don't keep that many cs.
Too much money in D. STK/SWN/WBA have some useful 4.5ers. Get them in.
Not a fan of Fabregas and Payet may not play the first game.
      No Kun weakens the team.

Butland outperformed Cech and a 4.0 before he got injured. Cech is not great value is what i'm trying to say and when every penny is crucial to afford the likes of Kun and Ibra, there is better options elsewhere such as Heatster.

Please help me pick a team.I need to get Mahrez in for eriksen (1.0)

    Foster - Heaton
    Shaw - Terry - Morgan - friend - taylor
    Mkhit - eriksen - tadic - townsend - gradel
    Aguero - lukaku - gray

Some thoughts, do you have any?

    Courtois/de gea + jaku (then evans for the 5.5 defender) = +o.5
    Townsend to bolasie = +0.5
    Taylor to 4.0 = +0.5

I like good balance in my team, I like to have players that i can rotate early on.

Moreover if a 5.5 midfielder i.e. shaqiri turns out to be the new mahrez. I don't want to jump on the bandwagon late because i don't want to sacrifice my 8m midfielder.

At the moment if that happened i could jsut swap out gradel.

    Foster/jaku

    Shaw, terry, Gabriel, pieters, friend

tbh I see nothing wrong with that team, and I actually like your midfield (although I think Capoue is a better pick for the last spot). However I do think Terry and Gabby are not really nailed on options in the long run so I'd rather downgrade one of them and have some $ itb for flexibility - in case a 9.5 mid tempt you later on so you won;t have to change much. good luck

Either a 4m fodder, or another 4.5m in for one of the premiums imo.

I'm rarely going to need a 5th defender as I have mainly nailed on defenders, so I'm going with 4.0 fodder in Lenihan.

Willian and Costa no like. Swap Willian as point spread will be too great in that Chelsea mid.

If a straight swap then Ayew/Siggy for me. IF you'd be willing to "downgrade" Townsend to Bolasie then you can bring in Coutinho for Willian

midfield could be problematic if william & mirallas don't start & townsend doesn't score, you might have a few early transfers on your hands

    Pick one

    A
    Firmino ( ars bur)
    Eriksen (eve CPL)
    Deulofeu (TOT wba)

    B
    Silva( SUN sto)
    Lamela ( eve CPL)
    Ayew( bur HULL)

    A Or B??

Leaning towards B due to Silva and ayews Tasty fixtures
    Assuming Ayew stays at Swansea

        Why so?

        Did Firmino influence your thinking?
        OR Eriksen?

        What about
        FIRMINO ERIKSEN AYEW?

I have Deulofeu and Eriksen in ma team, Firmino barely missed out.

Ayew might not be at Swansea, so I'm waiting and seeing on him, but I agree he looks a fantastic prospect, 12 goals in his debut season is impressive.

I don't really rate Silva as an option personally, Lamela could be good but he's a punt and an unnecessary risk at the start, easier to downgrade Eriksen to him than upgrade him to Eriksen.

Second fantasy season for me and this is my current draft, any opinions?

    Foster (jaku)
    Baines pieters shaw
    Nolito hazard mkhi ayew (fletcher)
    Ibra(c) lukaku deeney
I know deeney is risky, but might perform even better under new manager and got a decent amount of points last year after a good run towards the end. Hard fixtures though, so mahbe wiser to bring him in later on in the season

The ownership of Aguero makes it too devastating not to have him, if he gets a haul then there is a huge loss in rank

I'm a little surprised that Deeney isn't in more teams. His fixtures aren't the greatest but he was one player who was in great form at the end of last season. I can see him being the third cheap forward this season.

Gotta play the fixtures given we've got nothing else to go on, I guess.

Find .5 for Heaton. Which is easy cuz Deeney has brutal fixtures and there are so many quality 6.5s
Who are other 2 defs? This a good team potentially, might downgrade the Mids to get to Kane. Are you married to Lukaku?

From the response I think I will switch around on the team and get the funds to upgrade lukaku to aguero. Can see where you are going with the deeney thing, but want to keep him regardless of his fixtures (but I am tempted to downgrade him to gray, think he will be good this season)

Uncertainty about Nolito's mins. Will he play 90 mins every week when fit? Deeney has awful fixtures, I can only see at the very most 2 goals from him. No Kun is also a major problem if he bangs in the goals right from the start

Will get aguero involved I think so will downgrade nolito to fischer, which should start every game (unless he plays very bad in the first couple of games).

What do you reckon would be considered a success for a £100m Pogba at Man Utd?

I'd of thought a CL, a couple PL titles and a fist full of domestic cups over the next five years minimum?

Record number of goals scored and least conceded ever..
15 goals.. 20 assists.. at least 7 yellow cards and no reds, and he must karate kick a fan.

I like the idea of getting involved in a draft league this season but have no idea where to start or how they work. Would like something where I go head-to-head with mates and we draft a new unique team EACH gameweek rather than a draft team that stays constant all season. Does such a thing exist?

    Foster
    Morgan Terry Shaw
    KDB Mahrez Hazard Townsend
