Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Anthony Martial

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

      Shaw, Williams, Friend, Evans, Lenihan

Can you really see him holding the spot down though? I mean he reeks of 1 bad performance and someone else gets a chance imo

Valencia is a big risk, i'm not sure whether i'll actually roll with him or just go for a safer pick. The upside is huge given his attacking potential though.

Harsh saying they're a definite. Just from the clubs which would fall under the relegation category they seem one of the weakest. I suppose I've brain washed myself into thinking they are done and dusted because of their opening fixtures. Hopefully Guidolin can keep them up, I really like Flores, never understood why he was sacked.

@PugLife. I'm done with explaining this to you, particularly as you're so hostile. See the phonetic alphabets here

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet#Letter_forms

Then check French dictionary for any word ending with é, and then English words ending "ay". You should see that they end with a different phonetic alphabet, signalling that they are differently pronounced.

The problem may be that it's difficult to find in English the phoneme 'e' which is how the é in the end of Sané, Mané, Dembelé, and so on, is pronounced. Maybe that's why it's difficult to pronounce for the English, and why you, Pug Life, can't hear it.

But then, it's bloody imperialist to claim that if you aren't accustomed to hear it, it doesn't exist.

            😆 Fair enough! 😀

Can see that Sterling comparison, but personally I think Mané is quite good.

Tbh, I'm not overly concerned with how people pronounce names either, but since there was a discussion about how it should be pronounced, I thought I might just as well correct that mistake. That's all.

Well, yeah, and then there's the point that both Sterling and Mané can both be mostly just speed merchants. Mané has however proven to continue to score goals over a long time, if not consistently, but maybe that's mostly for tactical reasons. Maybe he just has been more often deployed in the right way against teams that can be extremely vulnerable to pace, since he hasn't for sure been an exactly consistent goalscorer. He might score a lot of goals for Klopp though.

Mane over Sterling all day yeah he does have a goal threat for sure and can be very skillful.. Sterling i have never rated as a footballer brings nothing to the table whatsoever imo..

I wouldn't completely write off Sterling though. He does bring his pace though, and fluky or not, some of his goals for Liverpool were quite decent shots. He could be of good use for some mid table teams, in a counter attacking style of football, if they can deal with one wide forward not defending much at all, or teach him to defend. But at the level where City should be playing... I doubt that too.

Well, he's still young, maybe Pep can help him develop into a better player. But honestly, I would have thought Klopp more likely to have found good use for Sterling. Both would demand him to press more than he does, though.

Anyway, I guess we just agree on this. What do you think of Mané in FPL though? I think if he just can nail a place in Klopp's attack, he could be a good pick. Particularly if Firmino ends up being rotated with Sturridge! Wish not though, personal preference for Firmino.

The differences are subtle enough that in English they would be spelt the same, the French language is all about vowel sounds - it took me ages to get the difference between how to say mule and moule in french. I also used to say 'Merci beau cul' instead of 'Merci beaucoup' wish caused much hilarity between my in-laws.

Because we don't differentiate between those vowel sounds in English, it becomes hard for us to pick up.

People slaughtered my choice of diomande as third striker. I can see your thinking cos I thought the same. And your Midfield is awesome.
I'm afraid I don't like your defence atall though

Interested to know the ffs views on this? Read that a lot of the top players, select 5 out of 7 of their forward players, based on high/ moderate % ownership.Leaving the other 2 spaces in a 3-4-3 for differentials. So my question is,who based on this theory are these players?

I honeymooned there...in 1995! Ha. Loved it. It is warm. Go drive around the mountainside to Dikteon (sp?) cave, visit Mannaus (where like civilization began, again not sure on the spelling). Iraklion is the capital and there is lots to do. It was so long ago, sorry!

Will Arsenal have a fit starting XI for their opening fixture against Liverpool?

Sturridge is so pricey given his returns last year. And add-in Liverpool's tough tough opening fixtures, it's way too much for me.

That said, I will be monitoring Coutinho whilst I have Firmino though.

Having same thoughts, Arsenal away and Burnley away for Firminho, could be great. But then all that is followed by some nasty fixtures.

i really want a font 3 of Kun, Kane, Sturridge as i believe they have the best mins per goal ratio in the prem over the last 2 years. But i can't afford a premium midfielder so looking at doubling up on sturridge and firmino/ countinho

I have Sturridge and I am really tempted to get Firmino in too.

Fabregas looked like a steal before but more and more I'm beginning to think it's a mistake to get him, so maybe I will swap for Bob.

Moreno could be any £5m but fancy Liverpool against a second team Arsenal and Burnley. Depending on what happens at Swansea Williams + Ayew could go.
