Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

This morning we take a look at our latest captain poll, assessing the likely favourites for the armband in Gameweek 3.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We predicted that Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) would slug it out at the summit of the Gameweek 2 captain poll. They not only dominated voting but both excelled, bringing in a brace, maximum bonus and a 26-point Fantasy Premier League haul to those who chose to captain them.

We expect more of the same this Gameweek as Manchester City’s Aguero hosts a West Ham side that has looked disjointed due to injuries so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United frontman, who at 51% ownership has overtaken the 50.2% owned Aguero as FPL’s most popular player, visits a Hull side that have won both their opening fixtures. In the big Swede’s favour, the Tigers have conceding the third highest number of shots in the box of any Premier League side to date.

However, there could be a third protagonist to upset this duo’s dominance, with the 22.9% owned Eden Hazard (10.1) bringing in attacking points in both matches under Antonio Conte. The Chelsea wide man entertains a Burnley outfit that have conceded more shots than any side this season.

For those eyeing up a differential armband candidate, Southampton midfielders Dusan Tadic (7.4) and Nathan Redmond (6.1) look ideally placed. Although Tadic has yet to register attacking returns, his strong underlying statistics suggest that could change when Sunderland visit. The Serbian’s ownership in FPL is now down to just 4.6% after being discarded by more than 42,000 managers.

Nathan Redmond, who sits in 11% of FPL managers’ sides, has a goal to his name already and looks set to profit from his out of position striker role in this potentially prosperous encounter.

Ibrahimovic’s team mate Paul Pogba (8.5) offers another intriguing alternative armband option, following a strong debut in Gameweek 2 at home to Southampton.

After two matches without a goal, the 16.4% owned Harry Kane (11.0) will be lucky to register significant interest. The Spurs striker has continued to struggle in front of goal without the suspended Mousa Dembele in the side and, in Gameweek 2, his star waned further when he was forced into a number 10 role to accommodate Vincent Janssen (8.0), who was Tottenham’s most attacking player against Crystal Palace. Visitors Liverpool have already shipped five goals this season, but it could be the 1.9% owned Janssen who prospers rather than Kane.

Another of last season’s stars to fall out of favour this term is Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who has been jettisoned by 35,000 FPL managers already this Gameweek on the back of two relatively poor displays from last season’s champions. A home tie against Swansea, however, could be the ideal fixture for the 27.9% owned midfielder to prove he is worthy of a price hike to 9.5 this season.

How good is Mirallas? Bolasie better or not? Both could be rotated but if not they could be good value...Thinking of changing Eriksen to either one this week and after the International break changing Barkley to Özil. I like Barkley more but that Özil would really lift the team.

Wait until Arsenal show some form first. Also Ozil won't play more than 60 mins in GW3 due to lack of fitness. Wait till after intl break.

If u read my message it says that my plan is to transfer him AFTER the International break. As I also have to get rid of Carroll this week, I can just the Eriksen to Mirallas swap this week as I don't want to take a hit.

Fixtures are horrible, no form, dropping in price, Lpool look hit and miss...so yes IMO 😉

Get him back for 0.1 or 0.2 less when the fixtures improve.

Realistically though, how long can Liverpool keep this up? They can keep scoring 3 and 4 goals against the top teams all the time. Spurs and Chelsea away will be low scoring games imo. Spurs solid at home and Conte's team won't concede much.

Considering the same. Would Mane's presence or absence be a factor in your decision or is it irrelevant?

I think it's very relevant as Mane stretches the game a lot which gives more space for his teammates to operate in and make inside runs. This was severely lacking against Burnley hence all the pop shots from outside the box.

I'm keeping Firmino until I see how he performs after regular starts with Mane.

He's playing basically in the number 10 role. So if you back Watford to win he's very much a starter.

Looking at other mid-table teams, their number 10s are far more expensive.

I played him over Redmond this gw which worked out well, but I'm not sure yet that we have enough evidence to suggest he can provide regular points as a 4th starter.

I played him more based on the fact that I thought MU's defense was much stronger at home than Chelsea's away, and Capoue could get more space with CHE center backs more focused on marking Ighalo and Deeney.

Turns out I was right on this occasion but it was still a risky move.

You could be right but it really depends how fit he is. No first time football for so long could mean he needs some time to get up to speed.

yeah, but you spend 2 transfers getting him in and out. even if you're not taking a hit a transfer is basically worth -4... so thats -8 for 3 games... he'd have to do really really well to make it worthwhile.

If Koeman plays a back 3 in the next 3, I think it could be Funes, Williams & Jags. Holgate isn't nailed to play the right wing back role. McCarthy, Bolasie or Delboy could all feasibly play there.

Early transfer to beat the price rise and price drop of Barkley and Firmino:

    Gives me:

    Foster (MID)
Shaw (hul) Stones (WH) Evans (MID)

Hazard (BUR) Barkley (STK) Redmond (SUN) Tadic (SUN)

Gray (che) Kun(c) (WH) Zlatan(vc) (hul)

Only dilemma is the captain choice. ROLL ON GW 3!!

Pogba will definitely be a fpl option if he continues to play the free role he did last gw. I said last week that I think he'll play that attacking 'Ramsey' type role from the double pivot and I was correct. I also said I think he'll play the role even better than Ramsey as Pogba is technically better, so that should mean he gets the attacking returns Ramsey did at that time, and Ramsey was definitely a good fpl option in that free box to box role.

I expect Pogba to get similar returns if not better, and all the other work he does in midfield should make him a bonus magnet if he gets attacking returns.

If he keeps that role he'll be straight in my team, and if anyone else says he shouldn't be considered, then they are just thinking with their heart and not their fpl brains. 😉

    1. Valdes
    2. Stones
    3. Pieters
    4. Souare
    5. Firmino
    6. Wilson

Best striker for 6.9m or less for upcoming favourable fixtures to partner with this attack :

    Hazard - Barkley - Lamela - Redmond - Capoue
    Kun - Ibra

Any changes required? Appreciate all your thoughts.

2FT - annoyingly missed the price drop on Vardy and Alli

Alli > Redmond and Vardy > Ibra looks appealing

    Foster Heaton
    Valencia Stones Morgan Friend Kone
    Hazard Firmino Alli Ramirez Capoue
    Aguero Vardy Gray

Looks like a pretty efficient way to get Ibra in...
Firmino/Ali both had bad starts and now face each other - pick whichever you're most confident in I guess.
I've just gone Firmino -> Lamela so know who'll be I'll be supporting next weekend :p

        Cheers.
Yeah it's one of the two, both haven't started as well as I'd hoped.
Lamela is a great shout - great value too.

Any changes you would make to this WC team for GW3?

    Foster (Jaku)
    Ivanovich / Valencia / Jagielka / (Collins / Amat)
Hazard / Barkley / Lamela / Redmond (Capoue)
    Aguero / Ibra / Rondon

Plan is to do Ivanovich/Barkley -> Ozil/4.5 when Ozil hits form

    Stuck, need help!

A: Stones to Shaw, play Routledge/Højbjerg (who?)
B: Kone to Williams, play Stones and Williams, bench Højbjerg and Routledge
    C: Routledge -> 5,9mid (WHO?)

      Neither this week imo

      Eriksen if you really must

How has Alli looked? Haven't seen any Spurs games but thinking of getting rid as he hasn't been getting any points. Any suggestions as to a replacement? Or is it worth hanging on to him for a bit longer?

Looked good when he came on. Which is annoying because Id already sold him by that point 😆

It's a little tricky at Spurs as Kane has dropped to no.10 to allow for Janson no.9
Thus Ali has dropped deeper and pushed out of the first 11.
If you have a FT there's loads of options -> Lamela, Barkley, Walcot etc

Hey guys. Which one of these underwhelming Leicester trio shall I play, at home to Swansea...

    a) Morgan
    b) Albrighton
    c) Okazaki

Based on recent lack of minutes and Swansea's lack of goal threat I'm leaning towards a) but Okazaki could nick an assist...

ps. Yes I know I need to get Okazaki/Albrighton out but they've already price dropped and had more pressing issues :p

    I have 8m for a midfielder
Thoughts at the moment - Sterling or Lamela...

Hate to say it, but sterling!! I have Lamela myself, but sterling looks very sharp, just lacking end product though

      Lamela.

Better fixtures and more nailed on as we still don't know what Sane and Nolito's impact will be once all are fit and competing for a place.

Stick, Spurs looked good at the weekend, morale low at Liverpool, Lamela could shine
