Moving Target

Moving Target – Jack Wilshere

In one of the most surprising moves across the summer transfer window, Bournemouth secured the services of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on a season-long loan.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe convinced the England international a move to the south coast would help revive his career, which has stagnated in recent years mainly due to injuries, and believes the 24-year-old will prove a vital addition to the Bournemouth midfield:

“One of the key things for us is to make sure he’s fit and able to do himself justice but also to maintain his fitness is key. We will be flexible with how we train to get the very best out of the player. I’m hoping he will bring quality to our attacking play. I think I’ve said after every game this season that we’ve frustrated. We’ve done well in the first two thirds and then that final pass, that final bit of creativity has been missing in stages of all the games. His main strength is his quality in the final third and I’m hoping that is evident very early. I’m excited to see him play in the team. I’m excited to see what he can do in the team and the level he can take us to.”

The History

Following a short spell with Luton Town, Wilshere joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of nine, and from an early age was earmarked as a potential future star. He was named captain of the Under 16s and, after impressing for the reserves, was handed his professional debut as a substitute in a 4-0 win at Blackburn in September 2008.

With first-team opportunities limited at the Emirates, Wilshere joined Bolton on loan in January 2010, and grabbed a goal and assist over 14 league appearances.

He returned to north London ahead of the 2010/11 season ready to establish himself as an Arsenal player, and made 35 league appearances, scoring one goals and adding three assists.

Following a serious ankle complaint, Wilshere missed the entire 2011/12 season, and has since been plagued by a number of injuries, particularly over the past two campaigns, where he’s totalled just 17 Premier League matches, producing two goals and one assist.

Wilshere represented England at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, playing 19 matches, before making his senior debut against Hungary in August 2010. He has appeared 34 times for England, scoring twice and registering two assists.

The Prospects

Given that Bournemouth have only scored two goals and registered the joint-third fewest goal attempts, Howe will certainly be hoping the addition of Wilshere can help provide more cutting edge to his side.

The Cherries boss has used a number of formations since their promotion to the top flight last season, but generally favours the 4-4-1-1 system.

So far this season, Josh King, the only Bournemouth attacker to have scored, has been favoured in the central support role behind Callum Wilson, but it could be that Wilshere has been pencilled in to play in that position.

King is also capable of playing in either wide position, or indeed as the lone striker, but the signing of Wilshere certainly places some doubt in regard to the Norwegian international’s minutes.

The Arsenal loanee could also play in the deeper central midfield positions, although Harry Arter and Andrew Surman are an established partnership in that area of the pitch. Wilshere could join them in a three-man midfield should Howe favour using a 4-3-3 system, though the manager’s quotes certainly hint at a more advanced berth.

Looking at Wilshere’s underlying statistics from the last season he was relatively injury free in 2013/14, he averaged a goal attempt every 86.1 minutes, and registered a key pass every 54.8 minutes.

Last season, both King and Arter offered more of a goal threat, averaging a shot every 36.3 and 47.6 minutes respectively, but both trailed Wilshere in terms of creativity, managing a key pass every 79.8 and 65.9 minutes respectively.

While Wilshere’s valuation of 5.9 in Fantasy Premier league (FPL) may at first look good value given his talent, the fact he’s never registered more than 93 points in a single season is clearly a concern – King claimed 98 points last term, despite only making 24 starts.

Bournemouth’s fixture list over the coming period (WBA, mci, EVE, wat, HUL, TOT) is also fairly mixed, so there’s certainly no need to seriously consider the England international until we at least see what position Howe plays him in, and whether he can steer clear of injury for an extended period of time.

The Arsenal loanee is certainly worth keeping an eye on, then, but with the likes of Southampton’s Nathan Redmond and the cheaper Etienne Capoue already providing strong value so far this season, and Everton’s Yannick Bolasie, for example, also in the same price bracket, there looks to be far safer options for us to consider for the time being.

He will play and will likely take penalties.
He may not score since Palace aren't the most threatening team. So in that regard he is a risk.

Quite torn between him and Bony, think Benteke just edges it mainly due to the extra expectation to perform from the huge transfer fee, as opposed to being on loan. Heart says Bony, head says Benteke.

Would you wildcard this team? Have two transfers and was thinking of doing...
    A. Agureo Gray and Tadic > Lukaku Sanchez and Negredo (-4) OR
    B. If gray isn't suspended could do Agureo Tadic and one of the defenders out?
    C. Or bite the bullet and Willard?

    Foster Janku
    Friend Shaw Pieters Amat Stones
    Mahrez hazard Tadic Januzi Capoue
    Agureo Ibra Gray

        Hi Sheep!
Wait for the FA hearing regarding Gray. It's essential to your decision. Even though if Gray is suspended I always prefer to save your wildcard as long as you can.
You will have a great team if you go with three transfers (-4). I vote for Lukaku and Payet. Manchester derby will probably end with stalemate. Go with Stones and Shaw..

    WC team:

    Foster, Pickford
    Valencia, Williams, Evans, Friend, Amat
    Hazard, Ozil, Sterling, Antonio, Capoue
    Ibrahimovic, Costa, Benteke

    Look good?

(Plan for Aguero: Ibrahimovic to Aguero, downgrade Costa or Sterling)

Hazard has attacking returns in all of first three games, we all know this. That's put him right in to most people's team and I imagine that most will captain him (if not Sanchez) this week.
Thing is - surely the longer he goes on getting points in every game, the more likely he is to blank in his next? He can't go on getting points every single week.
Conversely - surely the opposite is true for others, like Firmino and Lukaku?

      that's an interesting statistical POV.
That is mostly true but history shows that players often have streaks.

One of the key skill of this game is not to pick the right player, it rather to pick him at the right moment.

Also, some players aren't subjects to streaks and tend to be more consistent. I would rate Hazard in-between both of the two profiles (Streaks --> Sanchez, Silva, Mané for exemple VS consistency Ozil, KDB etc..)

And every year you have players that just go off the charts like Michu, Ramsey or Mahrez

Yeah that's fair but it's not like I'm talking about Chuba Akpom or James Wilson here. Players that haven't scored points in previous seasons because they weren't even playing. We're talking about players that have got good returns in the past, and will likely get goals again. We're talking Firmino and Lukaku. Hey even through Harry Kane in to that - there will be some that look to put him in when Dembele returns for Spurs.

I'm not saying that I don't get what you lot are all saying about playing the percentages and going for the form player. As I've already said, the likelihood is I will bottle it and go for Hazard myself. I'm just saying that it wouldn't surprise either to see Lukaku come away from Sunderland with the match ball, and Hazard leave wales with a 2 point haul.

Yeah, I know. I was just yanking your chain.

To be honest, I'm an underlying stats guy, so a decent case can be made for Lukaku this week (though the lack of chances Sunderland have been conceding combats that to some degree).

At best the odds will remain the same (e.g. a player like Hazard probably has a 50% chance of scoring attaching points in any given game) but with a streak, it depends on the reasons for the streak. If it is "form" (i.e. they are on a streak) then this has little to no effect in itself as the most likely reason is statistical clumping. If the reason is something like a good run of fixtures or a change in formation/position then these are genuine reasons for a change in odds and will either continue or not and whether to get/drop a player should depend on the underlying reasons, not the run of scores.

Either way, ignore the scores themselves if you have better data, otherwise the scores to indicate what to expect in the future and definitely there shouldn't be a reason to expect a change in fortunes. At most there will be a regression to the mean but this means that from this point on you should expect normal/average returns, not that there will be good scores to balance any bad scores or bad scores to balance good.

I want to keep him, but the team overall looks better without him, and has more balance. On the weeks he doesn't score, just having a half decent defence will see you rise up the ranks. Something I can't afford with Haz, Ozil, Kun and Ibra.

It's difficult but not impossible if you're willing to go for a 2x cheaper midfielders like Redmond, Bolasie, Snodgrass, maybe a Bournemouth guy like Jordan Ibe.

Needs 32.5 back 7, then 3 x 6.5-6 types + Capoue, it's on but as you think, bit punty.

Lanzini, "Bolasie" (or Snoddy/King) & Rondon do it, but...

Yeah I have tried switching to 352 also, but the only team I'd be semi-happy with after Kun is back contains Puncheon/Snoddy, Bolasie and Deeney (check his fixtures after 2 weeks from now). The problem for me, is that in 343 I don't like any of the budget Strikers right now, except Benteke and Deeney. Since I can't WC again till xmas, I'd like more flexibility in midfield.

    Valencia / Friend / Evans / Pieters / Holding

    Ramirez / Hazard / Redmond / Mirallas / Firm

    Kun / Ibra / Gray

Definitely going Ramirez > Sanchez, however...

    Aguero >
    A) Bony (0.4 ITB)
    B) Bentekkers (0.1 ITB)

    Good evening, fellow scouts.

I played my wildcard this week, and got rid of Aguero.

My current team looks like this:

    Foster/Heaton
    Baines Valencia Koné Evans Amat
    Sanchez Hazard Sterling Puncheon Capoue
    Ibrahimovic Lukaku Defoe

I'm already settled on my keepers and defense. The trio of heavy-hitters in midfield and Ibra/Trollkaku are also meant to stay. I've already gotten a nice little price rise from Capoue, so I'm happy about letting him stay, but:

Not too sure about Defoe/Puncheon. 0.2 in the bank. Can do Defoe -> Benteke or Remy, but if I choose the former it means downgrading from Puncheon.

Is King a better option than Puncheon?

So far my "get Aguero back plan" is Lukaku -> Kun and Sanchez -> Antonio.

Sorry about the long post. Any help appreciated.

Please help with this tough decision,

Im in a head-to-head draft league and I am the Aguero owner. We have a budget to bid on unowned players and I need to try to win a bid on one of the forwards that came in during the end of the transfer window.

It is more important to find the best choice for someone who starts straight away than it is for looking at one's prospects over the course of the season. When Aguero is available, he obviously takes up the lone FWD spot in my lineup, so it's these next two gameweeks where I really need help. Bojan is my only other FWD and I don't have enough confidence in guaranteed starts.

So with that in mind, please rank the following candidates: Lucas Perez, Slimani, Zaza.

Sorry if my inquiry is tedious, so I am super grateful for any responses. Cheers.

Funny thing about people bringing Sanchez in and planning to downgrade him to enable Aguero in 2 weeks is that, paradoxically, aren't you hoping Sanchez under-perform during the period otherwise you will have a very tough time dowingrading him?

Will you really ditch Sanchez if he gets you 20+ points in 2 games?

    1. Blame It On Rio-ddermorten
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

I'd rather have him for the two 20+ games than to not have him. And Aguero is just as capable of getting those kind of returns.

You also have to consider who your forward is while you have Sanchez - I'd rather have Aguero and Özil than Sanchez and Lukau, for instance.

And if Sanchez is in red hot form the next two weeks, it's always possible to transfer out Hazard, or even Sterling (who most here will have alongside him) if you _have_ to keep Sanchez.

Yes because he's a very clustered player.

4 heavy hitters just doesn't go, 3 is just about achievable, he's the least important when Ozil is on offer.

Aguero, Ibra, Hazard, Sanchez in that order of importance, when one gets injured, Sanchez can join the party for me.

Feeling is he's okay for now, good Euro's, Ogbonna fit, but it's that lurking feeling... anyone remember The Lurkers?

Sanchez + Lanzini or Ozil + Antonio?

Prefer the balance of Ozil + Antonio over Sanchez + Lanzini but it makes getting Aguero back in more difficult.

    Cheers.

Do we think Gradel is just out of favour?

Seems like Howe doesn't rate him anymore. I heard some speculation during preseason that Howe and Gradel fell out after the red card in preseason. Don't know if there is any merit in that though.
