The Stock Check – Gameweek 7 – Saturday

Roberto Firmino takes his turn to deliver for Liverpool, as Adam Lallana suffers an injury scare in the early kick-off. Elsewhere, Troy Deeney and Diego Costa strengthen their CV’s with further points hauls. Here’s the Stock Check following Saturday’s action…

On the Rise

Roberto Firmino
He was under the microscope but responded in style.

Having missed out on the points in the 5-1 rout of Hull City in Gameweek 6, Firmino delivered with a 12-point tally via a goal and assist at Swansea City.

Interestingly, Firmino’s points followed a shift in personnel following Adam Lallana’s injury, with the Brazilian moved to the left to accommodate Daniel Sturridge. So, just as we saw with his brace against Leicester City, Firmino did not earn his points from the central striker role. He did, however, score with Philippe Coutinho on the pitch.

Leroy Fer
A fourth goal of the campaign for the Dutchman continued to defy his humble 5.3 Fantasy Premier League price tag.

Fer had suffered a loss of ownership heading into Gameweek 7 but will now likely earn further attention. Swansea’s fixtures remain testing, however. Arsenal and Manchester United lie in wait in the next four.

Diego Costa
Teetering on the suspension tightrope, Costa continues to tempt us.

His goal, assist and bonus at Hull City means that he’s now returned in six of seven Gameweeks and is the top scoring FPL forward.

Willian
With Eden Hazard drawing his fourth consecutive blank, Willian chipped in with his second goal of the season and claimed two bonus points.

He’s now scored seven goals since the start of last season, bettered only by Diego Costa in the Blues ranks.

Nacer Chadli
A third goal in four starts demonstrated Chadli’s attacking quality and boosted the Belgian’s mid-price appeal.

However, with Spurs, Liverpool, Man City and Leicester City to come in the next four, Fantasy managers are likely to keep their interest on hold.

Callum Wilson
Priced at just 6.4, we’d love Wilson to emerge as a consistent goalscorer. His header at Watford was his second goal of the season and his seventh from just 12 efforts on target.

With Bournemouth’s fixtures improving markedly over the next five Gameweeks, Wilson may yet prove to be a short-term striker option.

Troy Deeney
A third goal in his last four Gameweeks confirmed Deeney’s potential and justified his standing in our Watchlist.

With Middlesbrough, Swansea City and Hull City up next, Deeney has the platform to go on delivering exceptional value as the prime third striker option.

Jose Holebas
Watford are yet to keep a clean sheet this season, but the Greek offered another reminder of his attacking qualities, providing the dead-ball delivery for Issac Success’ goal against Bournemouth.

Dimitri Payet
A sublime solo effort provided a reminder of Payet’s undoubted quality on a day which saw his team-mate Michail Antonio suffer a successive blank.

West Ham are still failing to show the form that would warrant investment, but Payet’s goal and four assists in just four starts demonstrates that he demands to be monitored.

James Collins
Brought back into the defence by Slaven Bilic, it remains to be seen if Collins can cement his start once again.

West Ham’s teamsheet shuffle was so severe; it will likely take a couple more matches to gain clarity on the current thinking.

Jordan Pickford
OutstandinG once again for Sunderland, the young stopper made another six saves on his way to claiming a pair of bonus points against West Brom.

Pickford has returned two save points in four of five starts so far to underline his value as an active 4.0 keeper option.

Christhian Stuani
The Uruguayan has started five of the last six and has notched three goals for his paltry 5.1 FPL price tag.

If you’re considering a shift to 3-5-2, Stuani is a clear candidate to facilitate the move.

In Decline

Adam Lallana
Lallana was firmly in the ascent heading into the Gameweek 7 trip to Swansea but was cruelly de-railed by a first-half groin injury.

Jurgen Klopp’s solution was to introduce Daniel Sturridge – a move that shifted Philippe Coutinho to a deeper role and Roberto Firmino to the left of the front three. That may impact on both players should Lallana face a spell on the sidelines.

However, the Liverpool boss has stated that he hopes to have Lallana back after the international break for the Anfield meeting with Manchester United.

Alvaro Negredo
Once the most popular transfer target in the FPL, the Spaniard’s stock continues to spiral into rapid decline.

Dropped to the bench by Aitor Karanka at West Ham, those who were determined to hold to the ‘Boro man must now surely move to ship him out.

Only the injured Kevin De Bruyne has suffered more sales so far ahead of Gameweek 8.

Michail Antonio
It’s back-to-back blanks for Antonio now, despite being shifted to a role as the central striker against Middlesbrough.

Antonio was back on the right flank for the second period but failed to make an impression.

Sales have already set in, as FPL managers look to the likes of Son Heung-min and Theo Walcott as alternatives in Antonio’s bracket.

Patrick van Aanholt
Dropped to the bench by David Moyes, arguably Van Anholt’s stock took a significant dent with the Sunderland boss re-structuring his defence.

Van Anholt’s goal will have appeased his 5% ownership but, given the doubt surrounding his starting role, we can no longer invest with any degree of security.

Van Anholt eventually saw action in an advanced position on the left. Clearly, he is crying out to play as a wing-back but, until Moyes shifts to a three-man rearguard, his start and outlook look shaky.

Branislav Ivanovic
Another full-back dropped to the bench today; Ivanovic was a victim of Antonio Conte’s defensive reshuffle.

The Chelsea boss opted for a three-man defence, with Marcus Alonso and Victor Moses at wing-back. That saw Cesar Azpilicueta fielded on the right of the three centre-backs – denting his Fantasy appeal. Meanwhile, Alonso produced some impressive underlying numbers on his full debut.

As for Ivanovic, his security of start is now in question, perhaps not before time.

Abel Hernandez
With Hull City’s fixtures about to improve, Hernandez could have presented a budget third striker option.

However, Mike Phelan chose today to drop the Uruguayan to the bench, handing a start to Dieumerci Mbokani.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Where should I start?
Had a good GW this time but my luck will run out
    -2FT and 1.4 m to play with
    WC has gone.
    Cech(Heaton)---------steady away?
    Van A/Robertson/Daniels(Baines /Musouka)----------surgery?
    Capoue/Sanchez/Chadli/Antonio(Barry)---------tinkering/surgery?
    Kun/Costa(c)/Defoe----------steady away(given the above disaster)
    Any ideas?
-Musouka and Barry would be my focus to change?

Well Barry never plays so just let him rot?

I'd ditch Baines or Mousaka at the very least - maybe even Chadli as the fixtures dry up

Well i'm not at all a fan of Capoue 4th mid strategy but it's difficult to change that due to funds.

I would consider Antonio to Walcott if he looks good again. Roll the second FT then maybe look to restructure your side with a proper 4th mid in GW9.

Could do Masuaku and Barry out. But there's no really appealing mids to bring in around 6.5m

            much appreciated
really like your idea of rolling one of the FTs -my natural temptation was to say international break 2FTs , a bit of cash,'let's sort it'......but as you suggest with no obvious 'solutions' make one change-(walcott does appeal),roll the defence, and then await developments.
            thanks

    RP , Bottomed

    My Defence :
    Williams Holebas Evans Collins.

    0.2 ITB. 1 FT.

none of them have been scoring points, but the case is similar with all other defenders. Should I change one of them for a FT. ( Williams->Lovren or Evans-> Smith? )

I don't think its a trend we should rely on, its just happens that I've made the correct moves thus far

Eventually it will backfire, in fact it already has when I dropped Ozil prior to Chelsea game

Part of this game is knowing when to play aggressive and when to stay put, both strategies can work in your favor if calculated correctly

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Chip Change Please

Last season showed us what a game changer the bench boost and triple captain chips were when used around the double Gameweeks.

The All out attack chip though remains their poor cousin. Essentially offering people the chance to draft in their fifth mid for their third best defender can't really cut it compared to those other chips.

It clearly has little future. But what to replace it with?

Or do you like the AOA chip?

    1. Eden Hazardous
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

It's a decent chip which I would like to modify allowing us to play any 11 players rather than 2-5-3. This has two implications -

      1) one can play 5-5-0
      2) there are no restrictions on subs , meaning if you play 343 and one of your defenders don't play , an attacker can come off your bench

Essentially though all that is allowing is playing two goalkeepers. All other variations are possible already with AOA and normal formation.

5-5-0 is not currently possible, with or without AOA.
I like Eden's idea, but with one goalkeeper and any ten outfielders.
The second part is good too - I would have liked to have played AOA in GW38 last season, starting with 3-4-3 but allowing a switch to 2-5-3 or 5-5-0 in the event of one of my preferred defenders or all of my forwards not playing, rather than being forced to start with 2-5-3.

It would also allow eleven outfield players, which would be useful if both goalkeepers were injured.

My idea would be to axe the AOA and instead bring in two extra triple captain and bench boost chips. Like the two wild cards you get pre and post January ones.

This would bring in more points through genuinely good chips and also mean they are not completely tied to dgwk management.

Would certainly bring a new dimension to the TC and BB chips.

This I like too. BB and TC in a normal week can bring in 10 extra points , in a dgwk 20. You idea would do the same.

AOA meanwhile just brings in whatever capoue can score above a 4.5 defender.

Cant say like it because I wasted it last season but saving for GW38 this. Will alter squad to maximise funds in front 8 (ie 4.0mils plus to attacking defs) & try to get fixture players up top. Then I would like to make an educated decision. Yours didn't go well I see Jonty.

Nor did those who used it this week. That's the point, it rarely goes well and even if it does you are only looking really at meagre returns.

Useless chip unless injuries force to use.
One week wild card could be fun or a chip that allows four players from one team for the week. Both valid only for that gameweek and team reset to the way it was after.

AOA may be useful in a blank week or in case of injuries or if you can get a good 5th mid pre WC.

I think we've all written it off so everyone essentially does just waste it.

I'm saving mine this year along with the other chips until the DGW and blanks to see if I can get any benefit out of it.

AOA worked out quite well for me last season when it allowed me to play Alli when he was just starting to hit form and I'd benched points from him previously.
Would prefer a change though. 'Vice squad' perhaps, where VC also gets you double points, or one where highest scoring playing automatically gets you double points

How about a GW where you are allowed to bring in a player for 1 game only in addition to your starting Xl and regardless of price. You might be happy with your current squad but a player has a standout fixture you want to draft them in for.

Seing the TC and the BB are attack minded chips I don't mind having a defensive minded chip in the AOA. AOA is a chip I don't plan for, I'll rather just use it if I ever have several of my defenders injured and I have zero transfers available.

Also a bank the profit chip, allowing you to sell a player and receive 100% of current value, useful where you have held a player for ages and stuck in a position of if you sell for injury or suspension you can not afford to buy back later.

In AFL Fantasy (Australia) they structure it so that you can nominate a VC and take their points if they score well.If so, you can nominate a player captain that you know won't be playing and the points go to your VC. If you aren't happy with the points from the VC all as you can just nominate a captain - 2 bites of the cherry. It's a loophole and works well. You can also make selections/transfers right up to any game kick off.

The AOA chip-more often than not-actually loses you points so it contradicts the whole purpose that the FPL game had in mind for it. I am really surprised they brought it back again.

My big idea for a chip: At the start of the season, each player nominates a gameweek where there score will be doubled.

        Simple.

This. Doesn't even have to be 0.5. An extra 0.2 would be fine, really useful in the early gwks when a player moves from .5 to .6; and how often have you made 2 transfers to save 0.1 or 0.2?

Replace AOA chip by a best XI score chip. For one week only your best 11 players, bench or otherwise, make up your final score. It would have a definite potential upside, and choosing which week to play it would be interesting.

I'd like one with double points for the vice captain as well, but perhaps with the risk element that if they or your captain don't play, you have nobody to back them up.

As there is normally only two proper double gameweeks, I think a third genuinely strong chip would make things more interesting.

Agreed - it is the poor cousin, however -like every tool-if used correctly can still be very valuable.

For instance, in GW38 (as mentioned) when it is hard to predict line-ups as relegation and champions are usually settled by this point, or as in my case last week, I took a -4 and had Luke Shaw as one of my three playing defenders. Not wanting to take a -8 I used the AOA chip.

Still need to get the (C) correct though 🙁

Perhaps a 'best 11' chip? (Where your top scoring 11 players' points are counted regardless of whether they're on the bench or not).

Wouldn't be effective enough to make you consider using it in a DGW over TC and BB, and therefore could be a good safety net to use early season when deciphering the teams/players on form.

Nb - would also allow for some early season miracles such as getting Coupue/Jakupovic points off the bench.

I'd like a 'super sub' chip, except instead of the sub being a player from your squad, it can be any player in the game. E.G. for one week only you can draft in and play Alexis Sanchez, in place of, let's say Darren Fletcher (sorry, Darren, if you're reading). The following week you'd be back to owning Fletcher (and not owning Sanchez). Essentially allowing you a once off one week punt on any player you want

Top 6k at the moment... not for long though as captain already played and dont have Ibra or Sanchez!

Costa looks brilliant this season, but cant really afford him and Sanchez. Tempted to go for Walcott and Costa instead....Whatever happens, Im getting rid of Hazard.

How has Walcott looked? I havent watched any Arsenal games this season.

2.8% own all three if that helps.

Not sure on effective ownership but ibra's will be big due to high captaincy on him.

Check he doesnt ship a bucket load today first, but Boruc to Grant (Sto 4.0) will free the funds and give you a keeper who rotates nicely with Pickford for some decent short term fixtures. You will obviously need a plan to upgrade one sometime but as a short-med solution of bringing funds in play might be worth considering?

Yep they are, and at the moment save points seem more reliable to return than clean sheets, both teams are giving their keepers plenty of opportunity to bank these! Max cash in play further up the field as well.

I think it's just on here that scores are higher, some of the group thinking is paying off,
e.g. Pickford/Pva/Holebas/Deeny(Tekkers/Firminho) all did well and 'casuals' don't really own these guys.

Long way to go before next gameweek but how would you improve this (2 FT, 0 ITB)?

              Cech Pickford
              Williams Lovren Holebas Amat Kingsley
              Sanchez Firmino Sterling Antonio Carrick
              Agüero Lukaku Deeney

I'm thinking Antonio to Snodgrass or Milner would be one option allowing me to improve on Kingsley as he's no longer getting any game time.

Or should I give Antonio a little longer? Only had him for the two blanks.

              Hi. Villa supporter here.
Lot of talk on social media that the fans want Di matteo out.
              2 nil to Preston ystrdy.
Late goals in 8,87,88,90th minute drawing inside of a win..
              1 win league.
              19th place.
What the hell is going on???

Hi mate. I'm a villa fan too. I expect us to finish mid table this season tbh, yesterday was a woeful result though.

Can't imagine di Matteo will be going anywhere just yet

the main thing i got from watching motd is that given their prices Pickford and Holebas should be in every team

I have Britos instead of Holebas.

                Why you might ask?
Well, because when I activated my WC last GW and had Holebas nicely tucked into my team he suddenly became a doubt to play.

                FPL... gotta love it.

Looking for ideas for what to do after the int break. 2 FT 0.0ITB

              Foster/ Pickford
              Baines/ Lovren/ Holebas/ walker/ Amat
              Sanchez/ Antonio/ Firm/ Capoue/ Fletcher
              Kun/ Costa/ Kak

I'm thinking downgrade Baines to free up funds? Thoughts?

Is Milner a good option for possible 3rd or 4th Midfielder in a 3-4-3

              Any ideas would be welcomed

Let's say Ibra scores a hat trick today, and gets 3 BPs, so 17 points - how far do you reckon non-owners would fall in the ranks based on that one event?

Not too far because Costa would be the main alternative and he got 12.

Take 12 points of your current score and use that rank.

This GW will be my worst ever, if:
              Ibra blanks
              Ozil blanks
              United and/or Arsenal concede

6pts from 6 players so far, Ibra(C), Valencia, Bellerin, Ozil and Kun to play... I'll fall even further down if high owned players like Sanchez and Sterling score 🙁
