This Much We Know – Gameweek 7

A fading Swede, a rejuvenated Brazilian Bobby, West Ham’s one man crusade and the rich array of Fantasy talent available at Stoke City. Bear with us – it’s the lessons learned from Gameweek 7…

Only stats can save Ibrahimovic…
He needed an end product against Stoke but, despite his clocking up another fistful of goal attempts, Ibrahimovic failed to find a way through.

Prior to the Potter’s failure, there was talk that he’d require a double-figure return to quell a fire sale over the international break.

Having blanked, those sales are now underway, with the Swede facing a potential 0.3 price drop by the time he takes to the pitch at Anfield in Gameweek 8.

The statistics offer a crumb of comfort – in fact, it’s almost a whole loaf.

With an effort on goal every 17.5 minutes, there’s only some fella down at the Etihad who can match Ibrahimovic for goal threat this season.

And yet, while we appear to trust Sergio Aguero to overcome his White Hart Lane blank and justify his lofty price tag, patience and belief in Zlatan seems to have worn thin.

Those who are holding can cling to the underlying statistics and refuse to believe that he can go on failing. They may yet have a case.

Nobody puts Bobby in the corner….
Unlike Ibrahimovic, Roberto Firmino managed to silence the doubters.

His 12-point return in South Wales provided an emphatic response to those quick to lower him down the Liverpool midfield pecking order.

Firmino’s importance to the Liverpool cause has always been there for all to see but erratic returns, alongside blossoming team-mates, raised a red flag.

Now we can settle on Firmino, for now at least – watching to see if he can maintain such levels and finally emerge as the key option amongst Klopp’s middle men.

We haven’t got Payet…I don’t think he understands….
Everybody can accuse West Ham of being a one-man team. Dimitri Payet is so celebrated by Hammers fans; they’re almost resigned to it themselves.

Saturday’s extraordinary goal against Middlesbrough highlighted that Payet is willing to take on the opposition on his own to attempt to rescue West Ham’s season.

With opponents now working out that if you put a tall bloke on Michail Antonio, you can cut off West Ham’s goals, Payet’s one-man mission is well-timed.

But such a crusade is not yet enough for us to take notice.

No Fantasy manager is getting carried away – Payet is set to enjoy a very slight rise in ownership but, such is the competition for midfield slots, he remains on the back burner.

Antonio, on the other hand, is already suffering from the volatile and fickle nature of this season’s market – he’s shed over 25,000 owners ahead of Gameweek 8 and a price drop beckons before deadline.

Shining Son is blinding us to Alli’s upturn….
We’re all loving Son Heung-min right now.

He’s got the lot – goals, chance creation, out of position prospects. What’s not to love?

Certainly, Son’s transfer traffic is busy – no player has earned more new owners ahead of Gameweek 8 so far, and numerous price rises are on the way before the next ball is kicked.

We can’t argue – Son shot up a few more levels in our midfield Watchlist: we’ve definitely bought in.

But, in Dele Alli, there is another.

Alli’s form appears to have piggybacked on Son – there’s a new spring in his step, a devil in his play. Suddenly Spurs look to have a cutting edge, and everyone is wondering how a fit-again Harry Kane will fit in.

We’ll take Grant now and worry about the money later…
With every little 0.1 helping to jump aboard speeding form bandwagons, Lee Grant is an unexpected gift.

Relieving Shay Given for the Gameweek 6 draw with West Brom, the loanee keeper was outstanding at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Grant has surely cemented his start while Jack Butland remains stricken, with Fantasy managers pondering short-term investment ahead of an obliging run for the Potters that might just promise the odd clean sheet.

Okay, so doubling with Pickford looks risky business and, eventually, we may be facing an embarrassing lack of riches in goal. But those extra funds now can go a long way, and if Butland’s recovery should hit the buffers, Grant’s shelf-life could even be extended.

And Stoke may even have more to offer…
It was pretty clear that Liverpool would come to regret selling Joe Allen.

We saw, during the summer, that there were elements to his game that failed to get the opportunity to surface at Anfield.

Allen has already flourished at Stoke, with Mark Hughes trusting him with a central role, pushed up behind the striker.

Two goals in two games – nobody is getting carried away – but at 4.8 the Allen option is another unexpected offering from the Potteries.

Shift Van Anholt and we’ll all love Moyes….
So David Moyes is toying with the idea of deploying Patrick van Aanholt as a wing-back, or even a winger.

Having seen the Dutchman defend, he then watched him come off the bench to score a precious equaliser from the wing against West Brom.

By piecing together those two sets of events, Moyes has reportedly started to ponder the idea of playing Van Aanholt as a winger.

Keep us posted David. We’re very interested.

Ranieri has given us fair warning….
We’ve gone right off Leicester City.

We can’t get rid of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez fast enough, and we don’t really believe that Islam Slimani can change matters.

But, defensively, the Foxes have shown promise at the King Power and, with a few flashes of form, we may look again.

However, some chilling words from Claudio Ranieri has already doused those thoughts.

Apparently, he feels he needs to rotate more. That might just mean some more minutes for Ahmed Musa and Demarai Gray but probably not enough for us to even notice.

We miss Leicester City.

Ivanovic was also served notice…
In fact, he had about 18-months of supporters and pundits putting his performances under the microscope before, finally, he gets told to sit on the timber by Antonio Conte at Hull City.

We wondered if the Italian’s shuffle would see the Ivanovic option killed off for good and, while the Serb may well be revived, there’s no question that he faces a mighty battle to regain a starting role.

Particularly with Victor Moses in his way.

No, seriously, Victor had a cracking game and, while he’s playing at wing-back, there’s absolutely no chance I’ll be tempted to buy him.

Everyone’s a winner. Except for Branislav.

Pardew’s dressing up the Benteke air raid…
Alan Pardew is talking up how he’s re-built his Palace side – how they’ve progressed as a team.

Nobody can argue – the Eagles have become a very different proposition over the course of just three or four weeks. Nobody will relish playing Crystal Palace right now.

But, in truth, that’s probably got something to do with the fact that nobody really knows how to handle Christian Benteke and two big centre backs, coupled with an everlasting supply of crosses.

The new Palace are proving hugely effective and us Fantasy managers are left pondering just how much damage Benteke can inflict for his 7.6 price tag.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Which teams have useless centre forwards for Fantasy, and which have good Fantasy choices.

This is only partly to do with the actual quality of the team's main striker and more about formation.

With some teams the centre forward role is becoming more of a team player, there to hold up the ball and allow the wingers and midfielders to sieze on chances.

While others focus their attacking play on a centre forward.

So I'll have a go with some to get the discussion going. Feel free to add more teams and also further analysis of those mentioned.

Chelsea - the play is geared towards allowing Costa to get shooting opportunities. His chances created is low, but his shots in the box is high.

Chelsea CF – Good for Fantasy points

Liverpool - Firmino has been in this role, in false nine way, with the fourth best record for chance creation. But his shots in the box are low. Sturridge too only has a reasonable minutes per shot in the box rate, not the stellar one you would expect of him. When Firmino moves out wide he becomes a great Fantasy option.

Liverpool CF - Not good for Fantasy points

Sunderland - Defoe is Sunderland goals, with the occasional help from van Aanholt. The whole team is geared to getting him the ball. Looking at the stats no other Sunderland player comes close to Defoe when it comes to shooting in the box

Sunderland CF – Good for Fantasy points

Crystal Palace – Benteke is the man up front. But when Scott Dann is on the pitch his team mates prefer the defender’s bonce to the Belgian’s. When Dann is absent Benteke becomes the man they all want to aim balls at.

Palace CF – Good for Fantasy points when Dann is injured. Less so when he’s back.

For Members – useful table on attacking players http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/11275/

Especially when Dann isn't around. They are still too used to crossing to Dann, as we've seen when the defender is absent Benteke's goal attempts rocket.

Yes indeed. the centre forward holds up play and allows the likes of Snodgrass to get forward.

Looking to get all the Premier League teams mentioned here eventually so that we can pinpoint the centre forwards to avoid.

One anomoly is Ibrahimovic. Outstanding goal attempt stats...the whole team wants to pass to him to score. But no goals.

Like i'm trying to point out, players like Deeney, Defoe, Benteke, Lukaku and even Wilson are good fantasy choices. Nailed on for 90, foal point of attack and on pens. With 3 forwards with those atributes you have the freedom to take a midfield/defense punt every week and not worry about forwards.

Spurs CF - Janssen/Kane seem to act as the front man, dropping balls to the sides to Son/Lamela to cut inside and shoot or cross. However, Spurs normally take 15+ shots per game, so CFs should theoretically get ample opportunity.

Spurs CF - Mixed for Fantasy Points

    6. FPL_Sponge

Man City - Aguero is the target up top and think that the Man City striker will most likely be always in the points if the team perform well (along with points for mids like KDB, Nolito and Sterling when they score 3 or 4).

Arsenal - when playing with a conventional stirker i.e. Giroud, he wasn't the focal point and it wasn't uncommon for the striker to blank with midfielders like Sanchez, Ozil, Walcott, Iwobi picking up the points. (Obviously now a bit different with Sanchez oop).

Spurs - tough one, think its a bit 50/50. Kane/Janssen/Son likely to get in the points, but then Spurs are a side which often grind out results and win 1 or 2 nil and therefore points could come from likes of Alli/Eriksen/Lamela in the midfield.

As you say, Ibra is an exception but only in terms of point returns. Although he's seemingly becoming more of a target man and hold up player, he's essentially still the most goal threatening striker to own right now, apart from possibly Defoe. I'm keeping the faith for now.

He's also up against a Liverpool side yet to keep a clean sheet and a Chelsea side who are still very much in the process of adjusting to a new defensive system which also harbours the less than reliable David Luiz.

I'm keeping but when Dann gets back monitoring. It could be that Pardew says - don't pass to Dann, pass to Benteke. One to monitor. But the evidence so far suggests that Benteke's popularity for crosses could be shortlived once the defender returns.

I'm a bit confused by this talk about Scott Dann's impact. Surely this only applies to set plays? Benteke would still be the focal point for all open play attacks?

This, its a ridiculous theory. When Zaha runs up the wing is he looking to win a corner instead of putting in a cross for Tekkers? Very very silly.

I haven't watched games and didn't see any stats, but with Dann scoring and Benteke blanking in gws 3 and 5, gave me the idea that Dann thrives on the fact that opposition defenders focus on Benteke in the set pieces. I almost regretted getting him, but can't say I'm not happy with Benteke's points.

I expect Firmino to get points against United playing either as a false nine or on the side of front three, if Lallana is sidelined.

Yes, I feel like Lei may struggle in the prem with the CL and I have a feeling that if Musa makes it into the team and finds form than he might have the advantage over Slimani. Whereas Wilson has no CL no international games to worry about and I think he's on pens.

True Wilson wont have Mahrez creating the chances but Wilson is the centre point of the teams attack, he doesn't have to lead the line alongside Vardy.
But at the end of the day they are both very good options.

Not back for another month according to injury prediction but I hear you. My other keeper is Pickford who, like Grant, will retain his starting spot for the next few weeks and has the great save potential so not too worried even if Sunderland and Stoke's defence are less than reliable. Save points also great for bonus this season and last.

Pieters more likely to assist, Cameron had 2 good chances against United.. you need to check baps who is better. Pieters is card magnet although this year he is quite cautious and he lost his place once after one poor display.

I am having Bravo and Stones in my team.

Should I remove Bravo and get Cech since i dont have a Arsenal defender? I cant afford Arsenal defender. Or should i just keep Bravo and try to re-do my squad in order to get a Arsenal defender by removing Stones?

Bravo - 1 Clean Sheet - Total of 13 SAVES IN 4 Premier League Games (1 Penalty Save)

Cech - 3 Clean Sheets - Total of 19 Penalty SAVES IN 7 PREMIER League Games

I am in huge dilemma here! Thanks in advance fellas

I'd definitely go Cech; why would you want to double down on City's defenders right now?

However, be warned - Cech's impressive record of 19 penalty saves (!) in 7 games seems unsustainable.

    B) Boruc + Cameron/Pieters

A seems better for short term but when Butland comes back, I have to solve my GKs then..

    Pick Jak
    Kos Walker Lovren Smith Amat
    Sanchez Sterling Firmino Antonio Capoue
    Kun Lukaku Diomande
    1,4 itb, 1ft.
First thought: Capoue to Snodgrass (much more attacking and Capoue lucky strikes are over?)
Sterling will probably be all right. Of course wait if nothing happens, but if no injuries then pull the trigger?

Like it. Save the transfer until after the internationals, but if nothing comes up then you might want to use the freebie and cash to upgrade Jaku; the Pick/Jak combo could be dead in the water now.

      Like the defence though.

You could also think about Antonio to Son/Walcott?

Looking ahead of the schedule, does this look like a good team for GW 9? I am planning to save 2FT for Debryune's return.I think getting him back would be a priority considering his stellar returns prior to injury. .

    Foster/Pickford
    Williams McAuley Vertogen Amat Love
    Snodgrass Sanchez Firmino De Bryune
    Wilson Aguero Lukaku

    Foster / Pickford
    Koscielny / Holebas / A Smith / Evans / Amat
    Sanchez / Mane / Sterling / Antonio / Capoue
    Aguero / Lukaku / Austin

Too much WBA but not worth a hit surely.

    2FT 0.1ITB

    Foster / Pickford
    Clyne / Coleman / Holebas / Kone* / Amat
    Firmino / Sterling / Antonio* / Snoddy / Capoue
    Kun / Zlatan* / Lukaku

1 of my transfers will be to bring in either Walcott or Sanchez, other likely to be Zlatan out. Could upgrade Clyne to an Ars/Tot defender but only just got him in and has got great fixtures after this week until Christmas

    A) Antonio & Zlatan > Sanchez & Deeney
    B) Kone, Sterling & Zlatan > Koscielny, Sanchez & Deeney (Don't really want to take Sterling out but it allows me to upgrade Kone to Kosc and Antonio's stats are still great)
    C) Something else

    Cheers
