Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 13

Last Gameweek’s poll favourite Sergio Aguero (13.2) disappointed with a blank away at Crystal Palace.

A failure to register even a single shot on target at Selhurst Park, coupled with a potentially tough away trip to Burnley, is likely to dent the 46.5%-owned Man City striker’s prospects.

The Clarets have conceded a mere six goals in seven home matches this season.

Instead, Liverpool’s midfield maestros of Robert Firmino (8.8), Philippe Coutinho (8.7) and Sadio Mane (9.1) may push for the summit. Each has a strong case for the armband, although with 38 FPL points across his last four home league encounters, the 45.8%-owned Coutinho looks the pick of the trio.

With 35 points and 30 points respectively over the same matches, Mane and “false nine” Firmino are also very much in contention.

Arsenal also have a number captaincy contenders when they host Bournemouth.

The Gunners’ key options – 22.1% owned Alexis Sanchez (11.3) and Theo Walcott (7.8) – will have to improve on their lacklustre display against Manchester United in Gameweek 12 if they are to take advantage. At Old Trafford, neither managed a shot on target, with 12.3% owned Walcott failing to register a single goal attempt.

Mesut Ozil (9.6) and 1.6% owned super sub Olivier Giroud (8.8) offer alternatives. The former has served up 28 points in his last four home outings, while the latter has scored three goals from the bench in as many matches.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s resilient defence, which is looking for its seventh league clean sheet in a row, will be put to the test when Spurs pay visit.

With goals in each of his last four league matches, the 6.4%-owned Harry Kane (10.8) will prove a stern test and may win support in the poll, particular after his brace against West Ham on Saturday evening.

Tottenham’s defence has been far more obliging of late, with just one clean sheet in their last four league fixtures. They will also be without the suspended Danny Rose, with doubts remaining on the availability of Toby Alderweireld.

This presents one of Eden Hazard (10.1) or Diego Costa (10.5) with the opportunity to even top the poll this week.

The 31.3%-owned Belgian has delivered attacking returns in every home match since manager Antonio Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation in Gameweek 7. The consistency of the 41.7%-owned Costa is also enticing, with a goal in three of his last four Gameweeks at the Bridge.

Another reliable selection that may gain votes is Swansea City’s 3.4%-owned Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2). He has provided returns in four of the last five Gameweeks and hosts a Crystal Palace side still in search of their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Fantasy Football’s forgotten man Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.1) offers another strong candidate.

Sold by more than 1.6m FPL managers this season, the Man United striker has dropped off the radar as a captaincy option. But with a brace in Gameweek 11 away to Swansea, this weekend’s home clash with West Ham offers a chance for further redemption as he looks to reward the 25.4% of patient FPL managers that have stuck by him.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

There's a captaincy party going on at Liverpool in GWK 13.

Is that because they'll have Ibra in their FPL teams for West Ham (h) ?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Calls For Going Aguero-Less Get Louder

With the consistency of Costa, emergence of Kane, value of Defoe and coverage of Kevin De Bruyne there has been a small but growing band of Fantasy managers who are daring to go Aguero-less.

We saw in Gameweek 10 the cost of doing this. The Argentine racked up a 16 point haul against West Brom to revive faith in him and punish those who ditched him.

But with a single goal and no bonus at home to Middlesbrough and not a single shot on target against Palace (a team that has been serving jumbo portions of goal pie to visiting teams all season) Aguero is no longer considered essential.

An away trip to Burnley is up next, then Chelsea at home. Both gameweeks other players look stronger bets for the armband, with Liverpool’s midfield this weekend and Kane in GWK 14 looking particular standouts.

With that in mind are you considering going Aguero-less? If so what’s the plan – get in De Bruyne as coverage or will you be going commando when watching City matches?

For those with Lukaku and Aguero and 2 frees it is worth noting that you can get Kane and Costa and have some spare change left over (in my case Redmond to Sigurdsson upgrade)

Or are you sticking by him and his 13m + price tag? He has after all returned three double digit hauls this season as well as eight goals.

Going to sum up a few of my posts from this morning on this matter.......to start - yes, I'm seriously considering it to allow me to upgrade Allen to Sigurdsson for a front line of:

      Hazard - Firmino - Coutinho - Sigurdsson
      Kane - Ibra - Austin

Lets not forget though that Aguero ALWAYS scores goals, he's proved it season over season. For someone who we're considering dropping he's scored 8 in 9 and a bit games. In fact out of the popular strikers he's scoring the most goals per minute:

      Aguero - 103.5
      Costa - 105.4
      Kane - 116.2
      Lukaku - 132.2
      Defoe = 153.1
      Ibra - 165

The problem is he's only just ahead of Costa and Kane who are cheaper.

Next up is captaincy. Burnley have only conceded more than 1 goal at home all season and have faced some fairly tough opposition in Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal already. I don't think I'd captain Aguero this week or against Chelsea.

Then over December are we going to see rotation? City have 3 games over 8 days between 10th and 18th December. He could get rested for the decent tie v Watford (h) and Burnley (h) on 2nd January comes 3 days after the previous game.

Captain over Christmas can also be covered by some other top names who have good fixtures. From this week onward you could get this:

      Ibra v West Ham (h) or Coutinho/Firmino v Sunderland (h)
      Kane v Swansea (h)
      Coutinho/Firmino v West Ham (h)
      Kane v Hull (h)
      Kane v Burnley (h)
      Ibra v Sunderland (h)
      Ibra v Boro (h)
      Hazard v Stoke (h)

That's some pretty tasty captain options for me and even if you don't want Ibra in your team, when he plays Sunderland and Boro (h), Firmino/Coutinho have Stoke (h) and then Hazard has Bournemouth (h).

If I get rid I won't be getting KDB, I think there's better value options in midfield. If the fixtures aren't great for Aguero then they're not great for KDB either.

      Prefer Hazard, Firmino, Coutinho.....for now

Will I go through with it? I don't know, the fear will always be there. I'm seriously considering it though and I don't think I've ever done that before.

The big issue in all of this is ARSENAL.

How do you cover them and still get City(Kdb) in there?

          Not that interested in KDB.

Sigurdsson could become Walcott but I think I'd want Sanchez. At that point Ibra or Hazard would need to go.

            So you want this...

            Hazard - Firmino - Coutinho - Alexis
            Kane - ? - Austin

            Expensive

That's only IF I want any Arsenal around boxing day. Think I'll ignore them until then. Perhaps see what the Giroud situation is.

Aside from anything else I find it hard to believe Guardiola's Man City won't continue to score enough goals for him to keep his usual ppg up. I do have mild concerns about possible rotation though, more so than I would about Kane for example...

        Tbh,

I do understand important Aguero has been over the last couple of seasons but I think with the alternative as Andy mentioned above, it just helps you get a better explosive team.

Also, I am not really sure if you would want to get Costa and Hazard in the same team. I would obviously pick Hazard over Costa but also not a fan of no Sanchez/Walcott. I think Arsenal will not be slowing down (United game was an exception). I strongly see Arsene now using Giroud more often than before for example the upcoming match against PSG, I am sure Wenger would go for Giroud on top (Not sure if this means benching Alexis or putting him out on the left). I think Sanchez would be explosive going forward.

You can easily have Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho, Firmino/Mane/Siggy, Capoue (Any other bench fodder) with the like of front 3 being Costa, Kane and Austin.

The only reason why I don't quite see Defoe being a major hit is because you would have to bench him certain matches. For some people it would be good that you can rotate the formation to a 3-4-3 or 4-4-2 (rarely seen this season) or 3-5-2.

Speaking on the fact that, once you go Aguero less, it is going to be extremely difficult getting back him unless you do 2-3 transfers and that involves getting rid of some of your explosive midfield. I think it would be easier to switch to KDB if needed by swapping out Sanchez if you want to do a week or 2 punt.

I think the overall team appearance and possibility of scoring points increases without having Aguero. I am sure one would regret that one week when he scores a hatrick but I think you can easily compensate with the explosive weeks you would have week in week out with your Aguero less teams.

It's just always a risk. If you make the decision to take him out, you've got to redeploy those funds into the rest of the team, and options are still limited in my opinion. Kane's double was unconvincing and their fixtures aren't superb. If you're going to put the money into midfield that's 2 transfers, so you take hit or wait a week. Taking a hit to transfer out a non injured Aguero is madness, and if you wait a week everything may have changed anyway. It's for the recklessly brave.

My season is going so far south that it literally doesn't matter whether I keep him or not. I certainly don't have any fear in ditching - more a question of whether I think there are better - to replace him directly - and better ways to spend the spare 2m or so.

Currently going Aguero less certainly has appeal.

If I was in the top 10K though there's no way I'd do it.

I'll qualify this by saying I've had an Agueroless season before and had a 3k finish which is fine for me.
It gets to a stage when Aguero is almost a fear pick.
I've got rid with Sterling and replaced with Haz & Costa and used the extra money to upgrade defence.
Haz & Costa have outperformed Aguero & Sterling since I did it. The 3rd player Alonso has certainly outperformed Williams.
Now I have a more interesting team and am not in a situation when I'm relying on Aguero every week to produce a score to get a decent GW.
Rightly or wrongly I look at it as having an amount of money e.g. 25m for 3 players and working out what those 3 as a group produce rather than a 1v1 or 2v2.

Been without Aguero for weeks and happy with the decision despite missing the 16 point haul at WBA.

      Current team:
      Pickford Heaton
      Alonso, Koscielny, Holebas, Amat, McAuley
      Sanchez, Coutinho, Firmino, Hazard, Allen
      Austin, Deeney, Costa

Captain Costa most weeks as hardly ever blanks. 1.3 itb so can do Deeney to Defoe or Sanchez-> Siggy and Deeney->Kane. Would be a three weeks before can do that as not worth taking a hit for having just got Hazard in for Sterling.

What's most interesting here is that I have yet to see an Agueroless team that is demonstrably better than an Agueroful one. Team Values aren't high enough yet to have that 3m extra in purchasing power to enable a significant upgrade of a 6-7m attacker.

Until some more attackers in that range emerge as premiums in terms of production (Defoe, Walcott before his cold spell, maybe Austin are the only ones of any consequence right now), the only direct benefits I see are upgrades in Def. So maybe a Chelsea double up? No other defenders look that impressive.

For example, a shift from Aguero to KDB gets you 2.3m -- that allows you to leap from Austin to ??? Giroud? Slimani?

        For me it's something like:

        Costa/Ibra + Sigurdsson

        vs

        Aguero + Snodgrass

That's kind of what I'm seeing so far -- if it meant an extra premium, I think it could be worth it, but going without the most impactful player in the game for a Snoddy to Siggy move just doesn't seem quite worth it.

With my lowly position I've really got nothing to lose in getting rid of Aguero and replacing with Kane. I won't do it this week, but it will be foremost in my thoughts for next week. With Swansea's upcoming run of kind fixtures, and Siggurdson apparently being deployed as a striker, upgrading from Allen to Siggy at the same time does strike me as the logical next step.

My team right now without Aguero:

      Grant (Pickford)
      Stones Walker Amat (Evans) (Paredes)
      Coutinho Firmino Hazard Sanchez (Fletcher)
      Kane Costa Austin

I'm definitely selling him for Costa this week.

The only question is do I switch Lukaku for Kane and Lallana for Siggurdson or just do Lallana to Firmino.

Aguero is obviously still a great player, but I have no plans to captain him in the coming weeks. He's 13 million, being asked to drop deeper and track back more, Pep has hinted at rotation and KDB is a better option at over 2 mil less.

Costa will win the golden boot this year, theres no doubt in my mind. Frightening consistency.

If I go Aguero-less I'd have a team like this

      Heaton
      Alonso, Walker, Holebas
      Walcott, Firmino, Coutinho, Hazard
      Kane, Lukaku, Austin

      Pickford, Evans, Capoue, Amat

      worth it?

Was considering but saw some stats and seems a folly.
Last match he had 4 ITB that was even more than what Kane had vs Wham and he bagged 2 goals. Kun is showing consistent stats atleast for now...It will be folly to remove him before watford home gw 16

Going to pull the trigger very soon in a -8 in getting rid of Aguero.

      Will leave me with;

      Hazard KDB Coutinho Firmino
      Costa Kane Austin

I believe it is worth it.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 13

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 2pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Think I might go insane this week and do:

    Aguero / Allen / Benteke > Kane / Siggy / Defoe (-8)

Will leave me with this front 8:

    Sanchez - Walcott - Mane - Siggy - Capoue
    Kane - Costa - Defoe

In this scenario, I could downgrade Sanchez to get Hazard or upgrade Walcott to Coutinho the week after, if I liked.

If there ever was a year to take hits, this is it 😉

Going by OPTA...they didn't declare it as being a shot for some reason. They do have two shots as being blocked.

I did say before that match - something that was backed up by Bolivian Seaman as well - that midfielders and defenders prosper more in front of goal at Selhurst Park not strikers for some reason. that was proved again at the weekend and a factor in me not captaining Aguero then.

        • 8 Years

I guess they count it as blocked if it's not saved by the goalkeeper, but by another player, but it's a harsh definition when it's a few inches from rolling in!

        Thanks, Jonty

I think it may be more that they didn't see it as a shot - more a cross/pass.

They count a blocked shot as on target if they deem it to be a shot and on target.

I had the very same 7.8 budget and went for Siggy, but it was a toss up between him and Theo.

Came down to the fact that pretty much everything Swansea do goes through Siggy, whereas Walcott will share points a lot more with the other Arsenal players, he could also miss a game at some point either through european/festive rotation or the birth of his child. Siggy is about as nailed as it gets.

Swanseas fixtures are also pretty hard to argue with after Spurs.

I may very well still bring in Walcott in the new year for Arsenal's kind run of fixtures then.

        On Giroud:

"Sometimes a player won’t play in October and then afterwards he’ll play every game until January. That’s part of it.”

'I consider him to be a regular player. He had a long holiday [after the Euros], after that he was injured and now he’s just coming back for a few games. It’s true that in the past two games he has been a bit frustrated but that’s normal because he’s ready to go again. The solution of Alexis up front has worked well and I have two options at the moment. Olivier Giroud is in both options because Alexis can play on the flank. Olivier can only play through the middle, so I can sometimes marry the two together.'

Yep. I simply cannot resist an Aguero differential captain.

It's between him and the pool lads.

But as their group position is good, i guess he would be on bench for CL fixture

"Any Other Score" third favourite in the correct score market for the Liverpool/Sunderland game 😀

    http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/premier-league/liverpool-v-sunderland/correct-score

That means there's a cricket score incoming!

Now, I've got Firmino (c) and Coutinho. Betcha Mane gets a hatty then!

I am not gutsy enough to take Kun out. LOL
Ban or injury is the only way out for him from my team.
I have built my team thinking I won't take Sanchez, Kun, Koscielny, Foster out in any case, stupid data analysis.
