Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 26

More time, fewer players: the captaincy decision for Gameweek 26 is somewhat unique.

While the Premier League takes a weekend off to concentrate on the FA Cup, our latest poll has to make do without assets from EFL Cup finalists Southampton and Manchester United, as well as their respective league opponents Arsenal and Manchester City.

This could hand Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.2) and Diego Costa (10.5) an opportunity to compete for the summit, as they prepare to welcome a resurgent Swansea City to Stamford Bridge.

While the Swans are much improved under Paul Clement, they have still mustered just a single clean sheet and conceded nine goals in his five matches in charge.

Costa’s strong track record against the Welsh side could also weigh in his favour: he’s scored seven goals against them over three seasons.

As mentioned in last night’s Stock Check, however, Costa’s form is coming into question: he’s delivered a modest three goals over his last eight Gameweek starts.

Hazard’s remarkable home record perhaps edges him above the striker in the armband pecking order, with five of the Belgian’s six double-digit hauls arriving on home turf.

The pair of Blues assets are owned by around a third of FPL managers.

Pedro (6.9), who found the net against Burnley on Sunday, is another Chelsea player that enjoys home comforts, with three of his five double-figure returns arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Having torn into a hapless Bournemouth in his previous home outing, Romelu Lukaku (9. 9) will surely be heavily backed for the visit of an erratic Sunderland defence.

The Black Cats earned a surprise 4-0 away victory against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 24, but were sunk 2-0 at West Brom in their previous road trip, and shipped four without reply at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Ross Barkley (7.1), who scored and earned an assist in the 6-3 rout of Eddie Howe’s side in Gameweek 24, could also attract attention.

Liverpool look to be the other prime source of captaincy candidates as they prepare to visit a Leicester City side in freefall.

The Foxes have shipped nine goals in their last four league encounters and last kept a clean sheet back in Gameweek 20.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s troops look resurgent following the return of winger Sadio Mane (9.2) from the Africa Cup of Nations. A quick-fire brace against Spurs on Saturday evening should establish him as the favoured Reds option over team-mates Philippe Coutinho (8.2) and Roberto Firmino (8.4).

The Brazilian pair have 13 goals between them this term, but Firmino has registered returns in just two of his previous seven Gameweek starts, while Coutinho’s last goal was back in Gameweek 11.

However, it should be noted that as mentioned in our recent Stock Check and this report, there’s a possibility that Liverpool may yet miss their Gameweek 26 fixture should Millwall take Leicester City to a replay in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

With a four-man defence favoured in the absence of the injured Danny Rose, the Spurs attack has struggled of late. Since the left-back hobbled off away to Sunderland in Gameweek 23, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have scored just once.

While this may temper interest in their key attacking assets Harry Kane (11.2), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.7), a home clash against Stoke City could yet revive their stock. On the road, the Potters have conceded 21 goals, keeping just two clean sheets.

West Brom’s Chris Brunt (5.1) must rank among the top differential armband options on offer. He faces a home tie against the league’s most obliging defence when Bournemouth pay visit.

The injury-ravaged Cherries rearguard has shipped 13 goals in their last four matches ahead of a meeting with Manchester City tonight. Meanwhile, Brunt has served up 61 FPL points, including three double-digit hauls, in his last seven Hawthorns matches.

The Irishman’s strong track record is likely to give him the edge over Baggies striker Salomon Rondon (6.7), who last scored in Gameweek 16, and winger Matt Phillips (5.9), who will be looking to avoid his sixth successive blank.

Hull City’s Oumar Niasse (5.6) is another potential punt. With Abel Hernandez sidelined, the Everton loanee will be relied upon as a source of goals in the forthcoming Gameweeks, starting with their home encounter with Burnley. The Clarets remain a travel-sick side, shipping 24 goals and earning a solitary shut out on the road.

Harry Maguire (4.4) may well be another candidate among the Hull’s ranks, providing the promise of points at both ends of the pitch.

The Clarets attack has scored a mere five times on the road, while Maguire boasts more goal attempts than any other defender since he gained regular starts in Gameweek 15.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Getting Mane in is fine but I don't think I would play him OVER Siggy, who is basically fixture proof. Can easily see him getting something at the Bridge, maybe a FK.

So I've been looking at bringing in Jakupovic for Pickford (I own Heaton/Pickford currently), but I've also been wondering whether it actually makes more sense to get rid of Heaton instead and hope that Pickford wins his place back when he's fully fit.

Getting rid of Heaton doesn't seem like something I'd have considered a couple of weeks ago considering what a hero he's been but I've been reviewing it further....

    PPG at home = 4.92 (13 matches)
    PPG away = 4.2 (10 matches)

Both not too shabby but as we all know, he's a better prospect at home than away.

Burnley only have 5 fixtures left at home - (GW30) Spurs, (GW31) Stoke, (GW34) Man United, (GW36) West Brom, (GW38) West Ham

The remaining 8 fixtures are all away including the next 4, albeit they are mostly against lower table sides - Hull, Swansea and Sunderland.

Jakupovic on the other hand has these upcoming fixtures - Burnley (h), Leicester (a), Swansea (h), Everton (a), West Ham (h), Middlesbrough (h).

Arguably the West Ham/Boro home games are better than Spurs/Stoke for Heaton and therefore that cuts down Heaton's home appeal even more, plus we'll have wildcarded before the remaining last few games where you might want Heaton back (or for a potential double).. Jaku's PPG are as follows:

    Home - 5 (5 games)
    Away - 4.8 (5 games)

His sample size of games is obviously smaller but it bodes well given the fixtures. If Pickford does win his place back it would also mean you could play him instead of Jaku in GW29 where Sunderland have Burnley (h)

There's also a money aspect here where Jakupovic could save you up to 0.8m by getting rid of Heaton. Granted you might not need that money now but it could come in handy.

The more I look into this the more I convince myself it's the right move to make. Will it be a mistake getting rid of Heaton? Let me know your thoughts

I'll be looking to ditch around the doubles if he is double free. Goalkeepers really shine around that time.

For bench boost having two playing goalkeepers with two fixtures each can be a huge ratings boost.

That is one thing to consider for sure. If he is going to have a double GW I may want him back and I've had him since he was 4.5

But these are the main fixtures you'd have to play Pickford in - Burnley (h), West Ham (h), Bournemouth (h), Swansea (h)

Obviously not taking into account DGWs yet because we don't know for sure who or when they'll be

There are 3 GWs when that rotation doesn't have a nice home fixture:

          Man City (h) or Leicester (a) - GW27
          Man United (h) or Man City (a) - GW32
          Chelsea (a) or Spurs (h) - GW38

Pickford's fixtures on the left, and Jaku's on the right

I'm in the exact same position Andy, I can see the logic, but until Pickford gets his place back, then it's got to be Heaton/Jaku for me. I plan Pickford to Jaku next week.

Worth mentioning that Pickford will be back soon too ... although Sunderland can't keep a clean sheet, which means you would be unlikely to play him. Therefore, would you maybe be better with the Jaku/Heaton combo to give you options? It probably all comes down to what else you could do with the saved money

Already done it here Andy. (13 Feb 00:47 Jakupovic Heaton GW26 )

People will mention his save points, but Jaku is doing even better. From memory (I was looking earlier), Heaton has 25 save points from 22 games, Jaku has 12 from 10. Given that, and the much better fixtures (and potential clean sheets), I think barring injury, Jaku outscores Heaton from here on in. Worth the swap even without the 0.8m saved.

I honestly think Heaton has been (and continues to remain) a season keeper.

The away form, especially against the lower side teams, might not be as horrible for Burnely - they played phenomenally well over the weekend.

I would stick with the combo, until we have clarity on DGWs - in which case it might make sense shuffling it around

Fair point, but I personally think he'll be at par with Jaku for the remainder of the season - instead of either of them being tangibly ahead of the other

In which case I would personally leave them be and focus on putting out fires elsewhere. But that's just me 🙂

If you can afford to keep heaton then prob makes sense. I don't think pickford/Jaku will be top many points behind heaton/Jaku come end of season tho. I have the former and very content.

I'm guessing you didn't bring Heaton in for CS potential but more for saves.

More away games means more potential for saves which is probably what makes him appealing.

Taking him out defeats the object of getting him in the first place doesn't it?

Not necessarily, I've had him for ages so it's not like I've just brought him in and saves are good of course.

But I can see Hull getting some clean sheets as well as saves so wonder if Jaku is the better option. He's done well in the games he's played so far.

I done Heaton to Jak this week as one of my 3 transfers! It was pretty much to free up the funds to get Siggy in for Stanislas. I do think it's a good move though. The reality is Burnley don't seem to keep many clean sheets away from home. Plus I think they will miss Marney who seemed to be a pretty important player for them.

      Sell Heaton? Worst. Advice. Ever.

He's the one player Mark has labelled "essential" on the scoutcasts.

Can't believe anyone is even thinking about it. As a non-Heaton owner all season, I hope you do all sell him. It's been horrible not owning him and I could do with the company!

What debate? You've essentially said "Mark has labelled him as essential" (which was a while ago)

I've made a post above explaining exactly why I'm thinking of getting rid and you've basically done nothing but mention Mark.

Given your recent habit of having a pop at my decisions and getting it wrong I can only hope that by your post about it being the worst advice ever that it will actually come good.

You wouldn't be considering this move if you knew what it was like not owning Heaton this season.

I think all non-owners would secretly be very, very happy if people sold him off the back of this hot topic.

Burnley's habit of encouraging shots from range and Heaton's tendency to catch and not parry make him a season keeper. I think he will continue to score heavily regardless of the fixtures you highlighted.

Absolutely. I wish I had had Heaton since the start of the season. If I had him, I wouldn't entertain selling him even for a second.

I'm not trying to push people to sell, I simply posted some thoughts I'd had on the topic as I've been strongly considering it. It doesn't mean I'll go through with it.

Owning or not owning all season makes very little difference, I'll always try and weigh up different options.

I too think he will continue to score well, I just wonder if Jakupovic can outscore him for less money

I went Grant > Jaku last night, leaving me Jaku / Pickford. Would think Pickford will get his place back quickly, they love him and I'd they're not keeping cleanies he could help. Plus Jaku definitely plays 28. And Grant's fixtures go downhill now.

But that 0.8m lets me do Amat to Coleman giving me 11 for GW26 and having Holebas / Mawson as 4th and 5th defenders.

Even without Aguero money could still be crucial, especially to someone like me who has poor TV compared to a lot on here

Heaton is 100% nailed. I could see Jaku getting dropped after 1 or 2 mistakes.

He shouldn't have rushed off his line in the build up to Arsenal's penalty and they have other keepers who can't be too far behind him.

I have Heaton/Pickford and am happy to stick for the time being.

Jaku wont be dropped again it was a mistake last time. He isnt just a better keeper he organises the defence better the defence has more confidence in him. If you look at goasls conceded per game with and without him this season the difference is huge

It is not only about getting droped, he could get injured or red card...and then you are stuck with two 4.0 keepers and if you don't have any money ITB you are taking a hit. With Heaton, you have few good replacements in case something happens.
remember how many peaple got burned early in the season with Pickford/Jaku combo?

I agree that the odds are that he keeps his place until the end of the season. However, Heaton is more nailed. I don't think the manager would look at goals conceded with and without Jaku over the season, he would make a change IF Jaku makes a couple of mistakes leading to goals.

There is a good logic in what you are saying, but if i'm not wrong there is an old saying "if it aint broken don't fix it".

I watched Bur-Che game and was very impressed with the way Burnley defended.

Also, Pickford is injured, still needs to get his place back and how sure are we that Jaku won't lose his place if he messes up next 2 games and Hull looses some important points? In that case you are stuck with two 4.0 non playing keepers taking hits to get one that plays. And if Heaton gets a DGW you'll want him back and you'll need to pay .2 or .3 more.

Not a bad idea but a very risky one with not much profit in it imo.

The point about two keepers at 4m is definitely something to take into account - it would change my team structure as I'd definitely spend the extra money from shipping Heaton and potentially could want him back for the doubles.

I guess as with a lot of transfer thoughts this week a lot depends on the FA Cup

Remember you'll have a wildcard for the doubles, so inflexibility in keepers won't really matter.

Pickford isn't injured, he's back in full training and just awaiting the green light from the medical team. It's not like we don't still have a WC to fall back on, and even if Heaton does have a DGW, he's not going to be the only keeper with one, why would he need to be the one brought in?

        1. Rossonero
          • 9 Years

You wanna use you WC to sort out your goalkeeprs? I plan to use my WC for GW37 (and a lot others too) so i need to plan carefoully every move. Why Heaton for DGW? Why wouldn't you want top scoring keeper for 4.5mil who broke all BP records this season.

At this point we don't know for sure that GW37 is the best for wildcarding, we'll have to wait for the fixtures to be sorted.

The longer you hold the keepers for though the better Jaku / Pickford becomes versus Heaton / Jaku in terms of playing the fixtures.

If you're playing the wildcard for GW37 then you'd activate in 36 which means you could bring Heaton back in if needed for WBA and WHM who he plays in 36 + 38

Yeah mate, that's what I was proposing - using my WC just to sort my keepers out... 🙄 Not sure how you can know which GW you're using yours in without seeing the fixtures yet. And most will be using it in GW33 or GW36 I'd think, not in GW37. I've had Heaton all season - sometimes you need to know when it's time to move onto a different option. Just because he's been the top scoring keeper up until now, he's not guaranteed to be the top scoring keeper from GW26-GW38.

      To follow on....

My main concern with doing Heaton to Jakupovic is I'm not sure the upsides outweigh the down.

Up to GW31 for example Heaton v Pickford comes down to just either wanting to play Pickford against Burnley (h) or Burnley v Sunderland (a) in GW29

Otherwise you'd probably opt to play Jakupovic in the rest. I don't know whether that and the money is worth the risk.

The money does allow me to get Coleman in for Amat, but I could just do Amat to Funes Mori instead so it's not essential.

Will have to have a think over it, either way I think Jakupovic is coming into my team.

I'm getting him for Pickford if Burnley win this weeked, seeing how Sunderland played this week with team that is probably more focused on cup final than it was on that game there is no way i want their defender.

Don't think Pickford being back could improve them? I mentioned it above but for now you're not looking to play Pickford that often.

Problem becomes if it gets late into the season and Sunderland still need wins (which looks likely) - they'd have to go for goals then and that could be cause for concern from a defensive point of view

It's a very thought-provoking post. I've had Heaton since day one and never once thought about kicking him out, but now it is an option.

I would prefer however to kick out Pickford. But then it throws up the issue of two good goalies. I have a penchant for putting my goalie who scores points on the bench so made the decision to always play Heaton and it's worked pretty well.

Let's not forget how well they played against Chelsea too. They also have some very good players now in midfield (Brady, Hendrick), so their defence may not be exposed away from home as it has been.

Right now I will plow on with Heaton, a great season-long servant thus far, but I will definitely consider Jakupovic instead of Pickford. Hull's defence is the new Chelsea!

Ps. thanks for a good post.

Someone I follow on Twitter also tweeted me the following ( https://twitter.com/trevg1977 ) :

"Andy is actually being kind to him [Heaton] with those away PPG stats. Take the 2 outliers - WHU where he saved a penalty and that freak game at old Trafford and his away PPG is 2.11"

Obviously you can't simply disregard them, especially as Jakupovic did similar against United but it does bring the number right down.

      He went on to say:

"looking at saves per game is interesting too. Under Silva only. Jaku=4.4 SPG. Heaton all season =4.2 SPG"

Nice analysis and helpful for brainstorming.
I would answer no, Heaton is a season keeper if you had him from the early days (like me from GW1). I would ditch only if my team was in shambles and i needed the money i made on him.
However I believe as a Pickford owner that i need to get rid soon for jaku and continue with the Heaton-Jaku combo.

So it all depends on your situation. Heaton will probably be top 3-5 of points in GK by the end of the season anyways. Thanks for the article!

I have had Heaton/Robinson from the off, a decision predicated from the heartache of benching him for most of his big hauls in 14/15 (he ended up scoring 150pts for the season). My decision has been vindicated as I have bagged all his points this season and I still believe he has a lot to offer so he is a season keeper. I will of course bring in a second playing keeper for the DGWs but I am happy to hold on to Robinson till then.

To those thinking about ditching him I would say, question Heaton at your own peril.

If doing heaton > jaku lets you do amat > coleman instead of FM then i think those are 2 good moves.

looking at both of their fixtures upto GW34 (assumed DGW & WC use), the only game id favour heaton over jaku is GW32 when jaku had city (a) & heatin has mid (a)

Coleman is someone who you can play every week due to potential attacking return but FM is not someone you would want to play in an everton away match.

I bought baines instead of coleman weeks ago & been regreting it since, as had no attacking return from baines whilst coleman banging in goals & assists.

My goalie combo is heaton/jaku so i feel i can leave heaton on subs bench.

You've been doing well with your transfers & captain choices lately so go with your instincts

How we should manage to use wc, tc and bb for dgw if we can only use one chip per week? WC week before the dgw and than tc for the dgw? So it leaves us with bb to use next dgw or what is the best tactic to get the most points out of it?

I'm planning to bring in Ibra as captain in GW 27, and shipping out one of Alli/Eriksen for the blanks - does that make sense?

For GW 28, I would ideally have 10 players this way. Are there any other transfers I should focus on?

Well, considering Ibra's form I would say it is a bold move to captain him, even against BOU...but might get you ahead if he eventually manages to convert his million chances into more than one goal pr match

He does seem like a very good differential pick, especially considering how many people are selling him off. Are his stats really that bad - from that i understand he is a guaranteed 1 goal a match with a million chances for more goals guy (in the last 10 GWs atleast) - not too bad no?

I've lost Sanchez to get in Lukaku (this week, after his double points) - as he has Liv in between

My problem with Ibra as captain (same with Costa actually) is that they usually score one goal with no bonus (e.g. 6pts)

12 points captaincy is not good (might be better off captaining Alonso or Walker then 6pts + bonus / attacking returns)

Is there a reason that everyone is discussing selling EITHER Zlat or Alexis? Both likely to have one game in the next three. Both tie up over £11m. If there was ever a good reason to take a hit, this was it.

Both out to Costa and Hazard, maybe bring Zlat back for a week next gameweek and then ship him again for the second blank...

(or have I got carried away?)

    1. MANGE TOUT RODNEY

By shipping him in and out you are using 2 transfers, why noy just bench him?

I'm reasonably happy with the rest of my team (injuries/suspensions permitting). I have 8 players with a guaranteed GW28 fixture so I'm not looking to bring any more in. I guess, if you had only a few players with a fixture in GW28, those transfers could be better spent.

        I'm currently

        Courtois, Jaku
        McAuley, Yoshida, Pieters, RFM, Coleman
        Hazard*, Alli, Phillips, Siggy, Carroll
        Lukaku, Costa*, Kane

I did this, but went with Mané instead of Hazard, Mané delivers more than Hazard for 1.1m less (which can be used to upgrade defence, as defence is where the points come this season)

it wasn't quite man utd v burnley but that zlatan captaincy really hurts watching motd. was delighted to see martial on the team sheet at 2pm on saturday, thought he might finally get a penalty. in the end alexis is the one to get the penalty! to cap it all off giroud didn't come off the bench for without seeing stats what i imagine would be the first time all season (would have surely taken the pen).

    oh well, next week.

Can everyone stop saying that Alexis and Ibra only have one game in the next three, their likely replacements will also (most likely) have a blank in GW28 so this transfer is essentially a single week transfer AND you'll want them both back(probably).

    Heaton (pickford)
    Alonso, Jones, Evans, Baines, ASmith

Got 2FTs to use. Giroud out is definitely one of them, thinking of getting Rondon as has a GW26 and 28. Anything better? I guess Jones or Sanchez would be likely to go aswell, could get Coleman and Siggy. Any other ideas appreciated!

Hahaha, sounds like the LOTR quote by Aragon: 'My friends, you bow to no one'

Still considering, haven't really decided 🙂

                Aragorn.

Siggy has already scored 8 vs. Chelsea, scored vs. Man City. is on pens, free kicks which can happen at any time.

he is too dangerous to bench.

Thanks for the typo point-out 🙂

Agreed, on the bench till Friday and then he's back in last minute for me

Considering the amount of shots they are taking, tear apart is not really a good word 😛

Hi. Get rid off big hitters with blank or non playing cheapie? Have to do 2 transfers to field 11.

    A) Anichebe -> Carroll / Llorente / Rondon / Niasse
    B) Cedric -> Brunt
    C) Sanchez -> Sigurdsson / Hazard
    D) Ibra -> Costa

      Assuming you already have Lukaku?

It would be A with Niasse (nice punt I think) and C with Siggy

Depends on the rest of your team but B looks really appealing!

What would you do? Stand to lose £0.3m on Ibra, but nothing on Sanchez. Like the idea of keeping Ibra for GW27 captain, but scared of no Lukaku for GW26.

    A) Ibra --> Lukaku
    B) Ibra --> Costa
    C) Pogba --> Mane
    D) Sanchez --> Hazard
    E) Anything else.

    1FT, £1.2m itb

    Heaton
Alonso | Coleman | Brunt | Funes Mori | Amat
    Siggy | Snoddy | Phillips
    Barnes | Kane

    Robinson | Ibra | Sanchez | Pogba

Struggling to see what to do with my team, pleas help!

    Boruc Pickford
    Alonso Baines Coleman McAuley Lenihan
    Sanchez Hazard Eriksen Siggy Stanislas
    Lakaku Defoe Gray

    2 FT 0.1itb

I bought Alonso at 6.0 (now 6.7) and Sanchez at 11.2 (now 11.8) at so cant afford to sell them really.
