Team Of The Season – Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez failed to make our 2015/16 Team of the Season after registering 167 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

To say he roared back into Fantasy form would be something of an understatement.

A “kind” price tag of 11.0 seemed even more appetising when it transpired that the Chilean would be deployed as a lone striker. Ultimately, Sanchez emerged as an almost essential figure in our seasons, finishing top of the FPL standings with 264 points – a full 39 clear of his nearest challenger – Spurs’ Dele Alli.

Not surprisingly, the Arsenal midfielder walks into our Team of the Season for 2016/17, receiving 29% of the vote.

The Statistics

Despite having a shortened pre-season due to his participation in Chile’s successful defence of the Copa America, Sanchez started in the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in Gameweek 1, playing all 90 minutes.

He sat in less than 300,000 FPL squads at the outset, until a 16-point haul in the 3-1 win over Watford in Gameweek 3 sparked major investment in the former Barcelona attacker.

Further double-figure hauls followed against Hull City and Chelsea as his ownership rose to 823,436 ahead of Gameweek 7.

Braces against Sunderland and Bournemouth maintained Sanchez’s momentum before he produced one of the defining individual performances of the season in the 5-1 win over West Ham United in Gameweek 14.

Sanchez registered three goals and an assist in a masterful performance at the London Stadium, racking up 23 points in FPL.

A host of non-owners were quick to acquire his services as he rose in price from 11.4 to 11.7 by the time Gameweek 15 came around.

Despite ticking along with goals and assists, Sanchez would fail to reach those heights over the next few months, managing just two double-digit hauls in his next 20 appearances as Wenger’s side suffered a severe loss of form.

It was only during the last few weeks of the season when Sanchez would really live up to his premium price tag, averaging 11.75 points over his last four matches.

The 28-year-old ended the season with 24 goals and 11 assists in FPL – the first time he had reached double figures in both categories in his three years at the Emirates.

He also registered 32 bonus points – ranking him third among FPL midfielders behind Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who both totalled 33.

A contributing factor was perhaps his tally of six yellow cards – more than he had received over the course of the previous two campaigns.

The Prospects

Should Sanchez remain at Arsenal next term, there’s little doubt he will be among the most coveted players in FPL.

But with a year to run on his contract and plenty of speculation regarding his future in north London, it remains to be seen whether Sanchez will commit his long-term future to the club.

Having peaked at a cost of 11.9 in FPL, it looks inevitable that Sanchez will earn a price hike next time out, with a valuation of either 11.5 or perhaps even 12.0 possible.

At the halfway point of the season, it looked a foregone conclusion that the Chilean would be re-classified as a forward in next year’s game.

But after dropping back into an attacking midfield role following Wenger’s successful switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation, there’s a little more uncertainty now.

Sanchez was, through most of the second half of the campaign, the only viable option in the Arsenal attack as the likes of Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil saw their form fade and Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck shared playing time in the lone striker role.

A price hike for Sanchez could mean that other Gunners attackers offer value through parts of next season, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey, who both found form in the 3-4-2-1 towards the end of the campaign, possible mid-price differentials.

Despite a generally disappointing campaign, Ozil still ranked third among FPL midfielders for chances created, with 100, and produced 167 points – making it his second-best FPL season.

If the German remains at the Emirates, he may enjoy a revival depending on his price tag.

But having ended his best ever season in England with an outstanding performance and a goal in the 2-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final, it’s Sanchez who is set to continue as a Fantasy heavyweight next term.

He registered more shots from inside the box (79) than any other FPL midfielder in 2016/17, highlighting his unrivalled goal threat.

Price, FPL classification, his playing position and the form of cheaper Arsenal attackers could all be factors in how we view Sanchez in 2017/18, but his phenomenal output this season suggests he’ll remain one of the most sought-after premium assets.

Maybe Tom Lawrence's move to Leicester a couple of years ago a decent benchmark:

OK player but not going to make the first side, but still English (yay homegrown quota) and still could've potentially flourished...

Man-marking. Easier for defenders to 'wrestle' opponents in the box imo. I feel in zonal marking, attackers have more room to make better runs that defences would find more difficult to cope with.

Zonal if the players know what they're supposed to be doing and react correctly. Though a mix between the two could work out best. It really depends on what your facing.

      4.5, 4.0.
      5.5, 5.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0.
      10.0, 10.0, 6.5, 6.0, 4.5

Yeah, that's the problem but I just hope they hit to begin with before we find the Michu, Mahrez of this season. Usually quite flexible in opening with a 5.0 defender and going a little more expensive on a third midfielder.

Thinking something along these lines ...

      4.5 - 4.5

      5.5 - 5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4

      9.5 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 5.5

      13 - 10.5 - 5.5

Would rotate between 3-4-3 & 3-5-2 depending on fixtures

                This.
And of course the transfer window are yet to be opened.

Hopefully we get to see someone, that did ok and showed promise, emerge during pre-season as with Mahrez 2 seasons ago.

1 thing I do know is I rarely go for players from promoted teams in a play-every-week-position.

Of course he is an extreme example but notable none the less as many of us saw hints of his talents the season before and had him from the get go.

And it does not not have to be a season long 4th mid.
Last season Capoue emerged as an option in pre-season with a new role. He of course died as an option later on but hey that is what transfers are for.
Same will happen this year, someone we have seen glimces of brilliance from will step forward...

Imagine if Lukaku is moving to Chelsea because they are selling Costa. Combined with Hazard's injury and a potential Sanchez move to Bayern it would free us up to build a team without Costa, Hazard and Sanchez in a couple of months!

Don't care much for guessing prices but...

Price of Salah (in Pool) will be interesting to see.
Gonna be tough for fpl to price him I think. With his last endevour in PL in mind but still a part of a great offensive force, tough one.

For me he needs to be quite a bit cheaper then the existing mid options. Not sure I'd gamble on him even @6.5m

At the moment, Mane is almost certain to be in my team, regardless of price. But if Salah joined, and was priced at 8.5 or less, I'd go Salah. Better finisher

So if Mane is a 9.5 mid and Salah 8.5 you would likely gamble on Salah?
A guy that did not set the league on fire last time(though he barely got a chance of course but coaches see training we don't).
          That is interesting if so.

Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed watching Salah these past seasons very much especially in Viola before he pissed me off and went to Rome. But to gamble on him at 8.5 ahead of existing known options I would not.

Mane averaged as many pts per game as he did because he played in an attacking system - the same one Salah will slot into

Salah is a better finisher and will be cheaper, maybe even by 2mil

Thing is if Firmino is reclassified, it's understandable. On the line up graphic, he is displayed up front.

Mane, however, is not. It'd be punishing him for having a good season and scoring goals from out wide

Yeah I kind of agree even though it's not often the false 9 has the most advanced average position..
(Here I have to say directly that I have not compared the 2's average position and I'm not gonna bother either).

Plus I absolutely don't advocate Mane being reclassified, I'm just saying that with what Camp no no put forward it's likely that would be the only way I'd own him from the start. But even then, I as I said have not done the math(and again, wont bother as I have a very cassual aproach) so it might turn out that even asa forward he might get to pricey for my liking.
With CL this season I'm not likely to put %-age of my budget on a Pool mid/forward.

But then he must be priced accordingly. That means, above KDB, and very close to Eriksen, Alli and Kun. 10.5-11.0 seems about right for him.

      2. Camp No No
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 11 months ago

Eriksen and Alli both scored 6.1 points per match this season.

        For comparison:

        KDB 2015-2016 ppm: 5.2 (price 2016-2017 10.5)
        KDB 2016-2017 ppm: 5.5
        Aguero 2014-2015 ppm: 6.0
        Aguero 2015-2016 ppm: 6.1 (price 2016-2017 13.0)
        Aguero 2016-2017 ppm: 5.6.

Alli and Eriksen scored as much as or more per match than Aguero has scored in any of the last 3 seasons, and Aguero has been consistently priced 12.5-13.0. Both Eriksen and Alli are 100% nailed on players.

They must cost a minimum of 11.0. Even 12.0 would be arguable, but each only scored 5.0 the season before. Although even that is around the same ppm score that got KDB 10.5, and if KDB would have scored 6.0+ per match this season, he would certainly cost you 12.0+ next season. They both basically must cost you more than KDB the next season.

Reading this afternoon some (more) comments about Arsenal and Wenger's stinginess in the transfer market after only offering 83 mill for Mbappe. when it seems the opening offers will be 100mill (not even sure if that rumour is true..is it?)....

If he's willing to spend 83m on a striker it could be spent on much better options IMO, Aubameyang etc.

Wakey, the reaction is to this: allegedly Real Madrid had an offer someway north of €100M turned down; allegedly Arsenal bids about or less than €100M. So, put these two together, it just seems stupid to bid less than what was already turned down.

If Real Madrid are involved which is being widely speculated then they aren't going to think twice about going 100 million plus.. in which case Wenger is wasting his and everyone else's time with a bid of 83million.. Arsenal should stop buggering around and just offer the €60M to Lyon now to see if Lacazette accepts to join Arsenal despite the lack CL football.

Longer Wenger waits, more likely it is that come August he'll find himself paying €40M for Callum Wilson when Giroud and Welbs are injured and Sanchez has moved to Bayern.

I respectfully disagree with almost all of that 😀

This could be misdirection about other targets. He employs lots of people this isn't the only thing he's working on. But most importantly though I agree they won't generally hit the same numbers as RM I don't think that means they can't win out on some players. Maybe he thinks there is better growth at a smaller club than RM and then he moves when he's 20.

If Wenger and other managers don't pursue these deals they need to give themselves a slap

So there's been lots of talk about fees for players being a bubble - how do people explain this?

Seems to me that the money that's being spent is in proportion with the money some clubs are taking in, not to mention the wealth of some owners. With so many teams vying for top players (and more all the time) I see it continuing to rise not bursting, with new owners stepping in at smaller clubs.

For it to be a bubble, in my mind, either people would have to stop watching, caring about, and paying for football or there would have to be such a huge recession that it hits every industry and owner, which would essentially make every industry, including football, look like it had been a bubble.

A lot of variables to take in to consideration, but I think it all comes down to supply and demand. The money is there because of the TV deals, because PL has become extremely popular around the world. But some trends points to a situation in which the cost of broadcasting rights could eclipse broadcasting revenue, which potentially could cause the current model to crack.

This brilliant video does a good job of summarising it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWWVq5XRgCM

But imo, their wingers play as inside forwards just like Mane does at Liverpool (an example) and fullbacks push really high

Better version, esp for FPL, of a team like Bournemouth - cheap differentials esp in attacking

Looking at Kachunga, should be 5.5-6.0 MID with 13 goals last year and Tommy Smith who will hopefully be 4,5

Anyone else a bit surprised with peoples obsessions with players "wages" and transfer fees? I'm happy that the market works as it does, though only dislike unethical investors like the Qataris, Abramivich etc.

I don't give a f**k about wages and transfer fees at the end of the day tbh. As we know, the market is so inflated these days, and so it's difficult for clubs to actually 'waste' money on them, even if they are ridiculously high.

Just seen that Man U are valued at 3.5bn, more than Real Madrid. Strange economic times.

Qataris and Abramovich and the likes are the reason the market works the way it does.

As long as any person earns more than some other bloke it's gonna be/have been a subject.

Market rules and players are wlrth exactly what anyone are willng to pay.
Now I await the day when PL attracts the absolute best players as they do with coaches.

It's used by fans and particularly on here to discredit a signing of a very good player.. such and such is a good player but not worth that amount and all that sort of guff.. the players are worth whatever the club sees fit and as long as it ain't coming out of my pocket i couldn't care less

Agree with the clubs suddenly elevated to one of the worlds richest after some sheik riding into town on the back of a camel isn't great but just the way of the world these days and little we can do about it

It does come out of your pocket though at many clubs. Arsenal's crazy prices are in some capacity a necessity to financially compete.

Take away United, City and Chelsea and Arsenal's ticket prices could be half what they are now.

More concerned with what's going on on the pitch tbh and we have always been both competitive in the transfer market and in the trophy hunt since they took control of the club.. as we were before then too

The vast majority of transfer fees are wide of the mark and so are the wages. Some people actually believe that Rooney is getting £300k per week

What do Southampton hope to achieve by reporting Liverpool to the PL for tapping up VVD?

What punishment can the PL dish out?

It's more of a posturing stance. They're just putting theirstall out for price negotiations

A points deduction is possible. Certainly a hefty fine.

Chelsea got a suspended points deduction of 3 points over Ashley Cole. But Liverpool have previous, they received a ban for a similar offence only in April.

Truth is that it's probably designed to twist Liverpool's arm over the price.

To look like they tried to keep van Dijk. They're probably annoyed because they wanted a huge bidding war but van Dijk has made it clear he wants to join Liverpool.

Fwiw, Southampton have done the same thing with Chambers, Clyne and Alderweireld.

Do you think it was Southampton who made up the story that City were interested in signing VVD? As far as I know City have never had any interest in him.

If you could pick one playerwho played for your team to play for them next season who would it be and why? And who is your team?

They can only play at the same level they've played at for your team before.

So an Arsenal fan might pick anelka as he played well for them but a West Brom fan probably wouldn't.
