Moving Target

Moving Target – Jermain Defoe

Earlier today, Bournemouth confirmed their second summer signing following the addition of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, with Jermain Defoe joining the Cherries on a free transfer from Sunderland.

The 34-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract and will return to the club where he spent a loan spell during the 2000/01 season.

Speaking to their official website, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe expressed his delight at being able to attract a player of Defoe’s quality back to the south coast:

“This a huge moment for the football club and another step in the right direction. We want to bring players here who can have a big impact on our continued rise, and we believe Jermain fits that as a natural, proven goal scorer.”

The History

Defoe began his youth career at Charlton Athletic at the age of 14, before moving onto West Ham United, where he made his professional debut in a League Cup tie against Walsall in September 2000, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.

He was then sent out on loan to then Second Division outfit Bournemouth, scoring 18 goals in 29 appearances, before being handed his Premier League debut against Middlesbrough in May 2001.

The 2001/02 season saw Defoe establish himself in the West Ham first-team, scoring 10 goals in 35 league outings.

Despite the Hammers relegation to the Championship in 2003, Defoe remained at Upton Park for six months before joining Tottenham Hotspur in February 2004 for a fee rising to £7 million.

He spent just under four years at White Hart Lane, scoring 43 goals in 139 appearances and then moved to Portsmouth for £7.5 million in January 2008.

Defoe’s spell at Fratton Park was short-lived though, with Spurs deciding to re-sign the striker a year later.

Although not always a regular starter, Defoe remained a consistent goalscorer for the north London outfit, netting 47 times in 135 appearances over a five-year spell, before deciding to join MLS side Toronto FC in January 2014.

He scored 11 goals in 19 matches, but the lure of a return to the Premier League proved too great, and he joined Sunderland a year later.

After a relatively slow start, Defoe totalled 30 goals and five assists in 70 appearances over two seasons with the Black Cats, although he couldn’t prevent them from suffering relegation last term.

Defoe represented England at U16, U18 and U21 levels before making his senior debut in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Sweden in March 2004.

He has amassed 57 caps for his country, scoring 20 goals, and recently returned to the fold under current manager Gareth Southgate.

The Prospects

Having consistently scored goals throughout his career, Defoe’s outstanding predatory instincts should mean he is a success in his second stint at Bournemouth.

Upon confirmation of his move to the Vitality Stadium, the England international stated “the one thing I can guarantee is goals,” and based on his output for Sunderland; there is little to reason to doubt his word.

The Cherries began last season with Callum Wilson as their first-choice striker, but he succumbed to a second serious knee injury in as many seasons back in February.

Josh King – who had spent much of the first half of the season switching between playing out wide and taking up a support striker role – cemented a berth in the starting XI following Wilson’s injury, while Benik Afobe also forced his way into the XI.

Howe often switched between 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 systems during the second half of last season, with King and Afobe enjoying much success as a front pairing.

But given Defoe’s quality, he is expected to take over from Afobe as the central striker, with King set to either play alongside or just behind the veteran.

King was one of the huge success stories in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last term, particularly during the second half of the season, belying his starting price tag of just 5.5 to produce 16 goals and three assists.

The Norwegian international thrived as an “out of position” Fantasy asset, classified as a midfielder in FPL but invariably playing in a more advanced attacking role.

But with reclassification as a forward likely for 2017/18, Fantasy managers look set to be handed a dilemma.

Having started last season priced at 7.0 in FPL, and finishing the campaign as the fifth highest scoring forward with 166 points, Defoe is set to earn a price hike to between 7.5 and 8.0.

King will be expected to command a similar valuation when the game launches next month. However, with Defoe set to snatch spot-kick duties – having scored five for Sunderland – he looks to have the upper hand.

Assessing their underlying statistics, Defoe had the edge in terms of shots, averaging an attempt every 33.5 minutes, slightly superior to King (40.6).

Bearing in mind that King made numerous appearances on the flank during the opening months, his numbers remain impressive. Certainly, those outings in midfield help explain why he averaged a key pass every 90.70 minutes – significantly stronger than Defoe (166.1).

But we should consider that Defoe produced his statistics in a side that ranked joint-bottom for big chances (35), although notably, King boasted a superior goal conversion rate (23.9 to 15.2).

Bournemouth ranked seventh for both goals scored (55) and big chances (65) in 2016/17, so Defoe can perhaps expect an improved supply of chances at his new club.

He is surely set to rank among the leading mid-price forward options, although Bournemouth’s mixed opening schedule (wba, WAT, MCI, ars, BHA, eve) means that Fantasy managers may choose to sit back and assess the data before committing to the Cherries attack.

Regardless, the capture of Defoe looks a canny piece of business, and with Begovic and perhaps defender Nathan Ake also on board, the Cherries look to be building a squad capable of securing a second successive top 10 finish.

Defoe certainly looks primed for another fine season, but the battle with King to claim a place in our affections could be a debate that rages throughout the campaign.

No, but if I did I'd imagine Tony Martin would be a good triple captain on the first stage time trial. Love the TDF more than any sporting event of the year.

I knew he was on drugs at the time, believed Live strong was a kind of cover. Nonetheless was absolutely captivated by the man. The fact that they were all at it meant he wasn't much worse than some of the others. Having said all that, the racing has been much better since he left.

Who the heck is Keita and is he any good?

Liverpool are ready to bid for RB Leipzig's £70m-rated midfielder Naby Keita, 22. (Mirror)

The Reds will not prioritise Keita over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and hope to acquire both the Guinea international and the Arsenal midfielder, 23. (Liverpool Echo)

Similar player to Kante but with a lot more to his game. Would love him to sign for us but RB are made of money so unless he wants to leave no amount of money we can offer them will tempt them to sell.

If he doesn't move this summer guarantee he's playing for one of the big boys next year

Does this make Tripper FPL Gold?

"Manchester City have opened talks with Tottenham about the potential signing of defender Kyle Walker.

Negotiations for the England international are at an early stage, and no fee has been agreed.

Fellow full-back Kieran Tripper is reportedly set to sign a new five-year deal with Spurs, which could pave the way for Walker to move to City."

Possibly, if he's priced reasonably then he'd definitely be an option, just not a certainty because he's not actually that good a player.

I think the system Pochettino utilises allows the full backs to look good though, they can get forward more and not have to worry as much defensively because of the coverage in midfield, actually knowing how to cross helps too.

That seems all kinds of backwards. Maybe coincidence, but we all know Kane 'starts seasons slow'. And the Wembley factor relates mostly to a lack of atmosphere which is surely more influential to attacking rather than defending?

I may be over-egging it, but look at West Ham in their new stadium this last season, and look at how Spurs underperformed at Wembley in matches last season too.

The reason I speculate that the defence will suffer is because the Wembley pitch will be larger, thus there will be more spaces between the defenders. Trippier might still bag a lot of assists, but I foresee fewer clean sheets.

FWIW I don't put any stock in the 'Kane being a slow starter' theory.

If Defoe comes in at 7.5, he would be still a good option to allow other for more pricier players. Pity about his opening schedule but given the attacking nature of BTH, I'm sure he will still score regardless of the oppo.

Thoughts on likely front three at this stage?

    Kane/Kun, Defoe/King, Jesus/CHS option.

Yep - that's what it is looking most likely at this stage. Would be nice to have a 5.5 forward this season that gathers the points.

Charlie Austin could be an interesting one if he's sub-7mill.

For Southampton I'm focusing on defence. Up top, I suspect that Gabby will fit into Pellegrino's system better due to his movement, so for me Austin will be a supersub/2nd choice in a team that won't score too many anyway.

I've not heard it whispered here yet, but i'll tell you who could be a bargain-basement sub 6m starting forward in GW1 - Tammy Abraham (depending on whether Llorente has recovered from his arm-break).

Out the window. KDB is the only safe prospect if Sanchez signs. Jesus could be as well, especially as Bernardo hinted he could be playing in the middle. If Sanchez signs, I'm just getting Jesus. If Sanchez doesn't sign, Jesus+Sane.

          Rotation could look like:

          GK: Ederson (Bravo)
          RB: Walker (Alves)
          CB: Kompany
          CB: Otamendi (Stones, Kolarov)
          LB: Mendy (Bertrand)
          CDM: Gundogan (Fernandinho, Yaya)
          RM: Jesus (Sterling, Bernardo)
          LM: Sanchez (Sane)
          CM: De Bruyne
          CM: Silva (other Silva, Gundogan)
          ST: Aguero (Jesus, Sanchez)

I see a lot of propositions of putting prices of Heaton, Cedric and Daniels to 5.5, Van Dijk(pre transfer) to 6.0, Zaha and Llorente to 7.5, King and Benteke to 8.0, and Gabbiadini and Austin to 7.0.

Some of these players didn't even perform that well last year.

I don't see that many people advocating major price rises for Courtois, Cahill/Azpi, Walker, Sane, Pedro and Fabregas in comparison.

I just find it odd that people want potentially high scoring players at small clubs to be priced closely to potentially high scoring players at big clubs.
Last year the gap between the top 6 and the rest of the league was massive. The transfer rumors makes me believe the gap will become steadily greater

Leicester's league win allowed a lot of overrated players at underperforming clubs like Chelsea, Everton and United to get a deserved price drop. Now we are back to the big clubs dominating, and I think the biggest price hikes should be at the top, not the bottom.

You make a very good point, however you don't account for one key factor: those 5 CL qualifiers are going to have to rotate their squads, and have mostly purchased or are purchasing high quality cover (cf Man City above).

The best players from clubs in the second tier who will play fewer matches will likely play more games; therefore, by the end of the season the best of the rest may well have as many points as the elite. Thus I do expect to see more high-performers from those clubs like we saw with Heaton, Daniels and King - not necessarily the same names, though.

That should mean that the best mine for value could be the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Southampton and whatever best-of-the-rest clubs you think will be in the top half of the table.

Sure but not strikers. I'll be getting a United defender (Valencia) and possibly midfielder (Pogba). Liverpool have the City problem of too many midfielders to know who's nailed on; I'll be looking at Mane, Coutinho and Firminho, but if they share the points around too much none will be great value so I might end up with Milner.

Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal will likely bring in new faces and City have the Aguero/Jesus conundrum.Really, the only settle-in top-notch striker who's guaranteed to get plenty minutes and goals is Kane.

      Personally,

I'm more likely to take Begovic at 4.5 for BOU. Ake doesn't get goals or assists.
Trippier - prob 5.5 but even at 5.0 not initially - i want o see how playing at Wembley affects the Spurs.
      Defoe - definitely if max 7.5. I'm hoping he'll be 7.0
Southampton - no attackers for me but definitely a defender, possibly with the goalkeeper if 4.5.

5.5 is the price of De Gea, Courtois, LLoris, Cech.
          Second tier keepers 5.0
          Third tier 4.5.

I'm expecting Forster to be 5.0. Begovic will be borderline between 5.0 and 4.5. Prob 5.0 actually and out of my budget.

Same here, but generally in the opening fixtures there are few clean sheets, so I'm not going to spend too much at the back for GW1.

              Gk 4.5/4.0 or a 4.5/4.5 rotation.
DEF: one premium, one 5.5 (these 2 both wing backs) and a rotation of 3 4.5s

            • 10 Years

SOU have great opening fixtures and I think prices will reflect this unfortunately.

            Forster will be 5.5 imo, VVD/Bertrand 6.0, Yoshida/Cedric 5.5, Stephens 5, Pied/Targett 4.5

No way will FPL prices be affected by opening fixtures.

Forster won't be the same price as De Gea and I think you've overpriced the Bertie and VVD. I think 5.5 each and they'll be deserving of serious consideration.

            2. Ramboros
              • 12 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

If Forster is 5.5 then they need to add a 6.0 price class.

              6.0 - DDG, Courtois, Lloris
5.5 - Cech, Ederson, Pickford, Heaton, Forster, Mignolet
5.0 - Butland, Schmeichel, Foster, Gomes + Other mid tier GKs
              4.5 - Newly promoted GKs

I think Forster at 5.5 would screw up the distribution of GKs a bit, but I welcome a 6.0 classification of DDG, Courtois and Lloris.

That's the kind of goalkeeper pricing we had until a couple of years ago. I thought narrowing the spread by capping the max at 5.5 was a great move.

                  • 12 Years

I think the fact that DDG, Courtois and Lloris had a 55% ownership rate at the end of the season says otherwise.

DDG started with 1.4 million owners. That's more than 33% of the game owning him at the start of the season. I do expect most people to start with the best GK in the league, but I also think his price should reflect that quality. 2.5 million started with either DDG, Courtois, Cech or Lloris. That's too much.

Now also take into consideration that we randomly had three 4.0 GKs being guaranteed starters in the league, and Heaton being exceptional value at 4.5. We might not have that next season.

Well we'll need to wait and see if FPL towers go with last season's formula or revert to the older one.

Nevertheless, I'm expecting a dearth of clean sheets in the early exchanges. I'd rather have a busy Swansea (for example) keeper at 4.5 making loads of saves than De Gea when United win 4-1. Later on i the season when a premium side hit a run of clean sheets, I'll make my move.

I see your point regarding ownership. But my only issue is asking us to pay 6.0 for a position that hardly gets BPs and can generates pts through CSs only.

FPL cant hike the defender and GK prices at the same time.

The 4.0 keeper was luck on our part due to reserve keepers getting gametime due to injuries to the main GK. Mannone/Pickford and Marshall/Jaku

I totally agree. I thought you were trying to justify Forster at 5.5. That's the root of my whole disagreement - if he's 5.5 the CL keepers have to be 6.0 and that's not reasonable. If the CL keepers are 5.5, surely Forster needs to be less, i.e. 5.0

The elite team GKs dont get many save points and face less penalties and therefore BPs, so its hard to justify a move up to 6 imo.

I think the talent is there but they dont get enough protection from the DMs. Setpieces need to be worked on though and Mignolet given backing by supporters.

Player for player its as good as any of the top teams except TOT. City only Kompany trumps them, DDG at United, Maybe Kos at Arsenal, Azpi at Chelsea.

However, in your favour, Keita is alleged to be Kante+, and Kante did enough to protect a similarly medicore back-line at Leicester.

But I'm just trying to be nice. Really, Everton and Southampton have vastly superior defences than Liverpool.

Still think Utd's best formation is 3-4-2-1:

          DDG
          Lindelof Bailly Rojo

          Mkhi Pogba

He's definitely not deep midfield. With Matic behind him, he'll be more offensive. Either level with Herrera or ahead of him. I'm sure there'll be more goals and assists in him (I'm not endorsing the formation above, btw).

    Pickford
    Coleman Williams Keane (Baines?)
    Schneiders Gueye

Compare with Pool Back 7 and I favor Everton.
Pool more squad depth but Everton Youngsters with Miralles and Mccarthy not too bad.

Klaasen and hopefully Siggy and Real hope in Giroud would put them level with Pool?

the net spend with 100 mil for Kaku and Barkley probably about 40 mil.

If Everton have not made inquiries then they are stupid. Giroud would favor London I am sure but Everton offer an influential financially backed manager in Europe. I think Giroud plays the English game well and will be more noticed at Everton. It is a wild hope though.

The next step is to make the top 6 a top 7 and to at least challenge for top 4. But yeah, more signings are needed for that to be realistic this season.

    5. Ghost Gooner
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Pickford looks like the best piece of business of the window to me.

Baines is still class even if he has lost some pace/endurance due to age.Coleman wont be same as before unfortunately (juniors can hold fort till his return and reaccess then.

Not sold on Williams (too reliant on throwing himself at shots and last ditch tackles). Keane will have to defend one on one more often now (can he play that way instead of two banks of 4?). Pity Jags is old now (1 more season maybe), he needs to be replaced.

Klaassen, Siggy, Giroud would be solid additions.

Miralles has to match his output to talent now, he should be matching Mane/Coutinho.

Kaku and Barkley have to stay though or all the gains will be just to stay 7th and not to push on.

I think a CB is still needed, Caceres maybe since he is a free agent and can play rb/lb as well.

      1. Eze Really?

I pretty much agree with all you say but 3 at the back with Williams and Keane could turn out well. Losing Barkley is not a big miss and Kaku is Kaku; great or crap. Miralles offers so much but workrate going back is abysmal. Creativity is key to improving Everton output and Giroud's minutes per goal would improve Everton.

That's what every PL team is doing, and why some of the rumors this summer are very unlikely to happen.

Aké and Iheanacho are leaving because they don't play and they'll both likely have buy back options.
Keane had one year left of his contract. Barkley and Lukau have 1-2 years left on their contracts. They are likely leaving for thatreason.

Why would Sigurdsson, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Walker, Cedric and Giroud be sold by their teams? When the new TV deal came through the first thing to happen was contract extensions to key players. These players have all signed a new deal within the last year. They aren't leaving until they are replaced.
