Moving Target

Moving Target – Nathan Ake

Bournemouth continued their summer recruitment drive this morning with the signing of Chelsea defender Nathan Ake for a club-record fee, believed to be in the region of £20 million.

The 22-year-old, who spent the first half of last season on loan with the Cherries, put pen to paper on a long-term deal after failing to break into the first team picture at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe expressed his delight at being able to attract Ake to the club on a permanent basis:

“He is someone we know all about, having had a very successful loan spell here last season. Nathan is an outstanding young player with a fantastic attitude and a great desire to learn and develop. He has a very bright future ahead of him, and I’m very pleased to say that future is here.”

The History

After beginning his youth career at ADO Den Haag and Feyenoord in his native Holland, Ake moved to Chelsea in 2011 at the age of 16.

He was handed his Premier League debut a year later, coming on as a late substitute against Norwich City in December 2012, and made five other appearances in all competitions during the rest of the 2012/13 campaign.

Ake’s progress stalled over the next few seasons, with a loan spell at Championship outfit Reading in April 2015, when he played five matches, his only prolonged spell of first-team action.

The Dutchman was then sent out on loan to Watford for the 2015/16 campaign and gained valuable experience in the top flight, making 24 league appearances, registering one goal and one assist playing almost exclusively at left-back.

Last season, Ake joined Bournemouth on loan and, after initially struggling to break into the starting XI, impressed when given a run of matches at centre-back.

He made 10 league appearances for the Cherries, scoring three goals, before returning to parent club Chelsea in January to feature twice for the Blues during the final weeks of the season.

Ake represented Holland at all age groups from U16s to U21s, scoring 11 goals in 63 matches, before making his senior debut in a 2-1 friendly win over Morocco in May.

The Prospects

Given the strong impression Ake made on the south coast during his loan spell, it came as little surprise to see Bournemouth pursue a permanent deal.

Ake’s insertion into the starting XI coincided with some of the Cherries’ best performances of the campaign, with his athleticism, tackling and understanding of the game making a real difference to the Bournemouth rearguard.

But it was Ake’s goal threat which proved pivotal during that spell, helping the defender average 6.1 points per start in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for Howe’s side.

He isn’t alone in terms of Cherries’ defenders who offer a significant attacking threat, however.

Steve Cook sat seventh among FPL defenders for shots last term with 29, scoring twice, and the centre-back also produced four goals and two assists back in 2015/16.

Charlie Daniels, meanwhile, was the sixth highest-scoring defender in FPL with 134 points, thanks to four goals and three assists, while Adam Smith (one goal and five assists) also supplied a tangible end product.

That quartet could be Howe’s first-choice back four this season, with club captain Simon Francis appearing in danger of losing his starting place in central defence to Ake.

No FPL defender made more errors leading to a goal (three) than the Bournemouth skipper and, at 32 years of age, he may have to settle for a back-up role unless he can usurp Smith at right-back.

Intriguingly, Howe may also consider pushing the forward-thinking Smith into midfield on occasions or become the latest manager to look at a three-man defence, utilising Smith and Daniels as wing-backs. Certainly, this possibility and the Cherries defensive selection warrant close scrutiny over the pre-season.

In terms of comparing Cook and Ake’s defensive statistics, Cook had the edge in terms of minutes per clearance, blocks or interception (CBI), averaging one every 7.18 minutes, slightly superior to Ake (8.84).

The combination of Cook’s set-piece threat and his strong CBI numbers saw him register 17 bonus points in FPL last term, with only three FPL defenders managing more.

However, Ake won 63% of his tackles – more than any Bournemouth defender last season – suggesting that he could help improve a backline that conceded 67 goals. However, at 5ft 11in tall he does lack height and won just 55% of his aerial duels – this may be exploited in a Cherries defence that was exposed at set-pieces over the campaign.

Only four teams let in more goals than the Cherries last term, while they also ranked fourth bottom for big chances against (72), highlighting the need for improvement despite keeping a respectable 10 clean sheets.

The arrival of Ake, along with the signing of experienced goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, should certainly boost their shut-out potential. And with all members of the Cherries’ rearguard also offering an attacking threat, they appear capable of producing healthy Fantasy returns.

Value looks critical in terms of who may hold the edge, with Ake likely to warrant a price tag of 5.0 based both on his goalscoring exploits last term and the fact that Bournemouth now have to be viewed as a solid mid-table team following their ninth place finish.

Daniels and Cook both started last season valued at 5.0, and Daniels, in particular, may be in line for a price hike up to 5.5 this time around. That may even leave us considering Begovic as the value route with a 4.5 price tag a possibility.

The fixture list for Howe’s men is mixed over the first seven Gameweeks. They have favourable home clashes against Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leicester City, along with an opening day trip to West Bromwich Albion, combined with three tough match-ups (MCI, ars, eve).

The addition of the talented Ake, who while expected to start in central defence, offers cover at left-back and as a defensive midfielder, should help shore up a Cherries backline that has at times been a soft touch in the top flight.

The underlying statistics suggest that Cook may hold a slight edge over Ake as a Fantasy prospect though, with the pair perhaps set to be favoured over Daniels if the left-back is subject to a price rise.

Choosing the right Bournemouth defender looks to be a challenge for Fantasy managers. Pre-season and an analysis of the statistics over the opening Gameweeks appears crucial to guiding our hand.

Lacazette has scored 1 goal in 11 international appearances... but on the other hand he has about 75 league goals in less than 100 games in ligue 1... How good will he be, and what price? I'd say he'll be at least 10.5

Kane started this season at 11, Costa was 9.5 and Giroud 9. Based on that over 10 would be too much imo, but the hype and price tag could go to FPL suits' heads like with Pogba.

I'm not as concerned by his international record as others on here, France don't actually score a lot of goals considering their talents (euros last year being a fine example), and talking of their talents, he has some huge names to compete with i.e. griezmann, mbappe, even Payet. The one concern I have though, which has been highlighted on here, is that Giroud was ahead of him in the pecking order!

Around 3000 hits per day, money was never a motivating factor. I began the blog as a distraction when was looking after my sick mother, and it took on a life of its own.

It just felt like the right time to quit, was feeling jaded with the whole fpl thing, and that feeling was not dissipating with the break.

Was a lot of fun though, always tried to make the blog fun and different with the likes of the robot and the form tables etc. No point just repeating stuff already out there, and the news explosion has really dumbed down the whole thing now

3 big strikers moves look likely to happen. Lukaku to Chelsea, Morata to United, Lazacatte to Arsenal. This will surely have a big impact on FPL and the way we structure our teams. Tough decisions ahead involving Kane 🙂

Who is replacing him as your premium striker? Jesus? What about the other strikers?

For me it's difficult to trust the 8.5-13.0 strikers apart from Kane. Too much rotation risk.

He's not even 1st choice pen taker for Everton, so how possibly would he be able to take them off of Hazard?

That's of absolutely no relevance... You're assuming Hazard is better than Baines at penalties, which he statistically isn't. Lukaku isn't that good at them, but it's not uncommon for a centre forward to steal them to boost their total goal record. Hazard isn't perfect with them either.

Morata has a lot of competition for his place with Griezmann, Icardi, Lukaku an Kane at Old Trafford.

Choose the wrong lineup and it could mean a disaster of a start while others shoot ahead. It's gonna take some serious thought.

Yep, I think we're going to need a light defence to stay flexible up top until we establish who we should stick with... It's unlikely we start with the right ones!

In all seriousness, feel like Pogba could cover Morata's returns to some extent. Since I'm gonna probably go Kane (depends on my ML, not too fussed about OR) I'll only be able to fit one of those three. Lacazette or Lukaku is the question I'm currently contemplating. Strikers is an issue for sure; I like how Defoe's prospects are shaping up, and Benteke has nice fixtures, which just add to the conundrum. Maybe will be going with 3 up front after all 🙁

Yeah, some good points. I was liking the look of a Kane Defoe Benteke front line, but I think we may need two premium strikers this season...

Hopefully preseason makes everything a bit clearer. As it is, Benteke > Defoe because of some nice fixtures, but form is very important to factor in I feel, along with some other things. If Sanchez moves to City though, he solves a lot of problems for me personally, as it would be the final nail in the coffin for me; no city assets until i see where Pep and his rotation is. More money for other players 😛

Only 6 teams got a CS in a BOU fixture last season, level with MUN and EVE.

I think it's highly unlikely West Brom will get a CS GW1, especially since Fletcher's departure and McAuley's ageing. They did only get 6 CSs last season...

              Absolute rubbish.

Oh come on, please, he's just a bloke that hit upon a formulaic pattern of play that worked well for a few seasons when the game had less informed players that it does now. Then he became self obsessed and arrogant beyond belief.

Becoming so egotistical that his self deluded grandeur became his whole being. That led him to become dismissive, rude and completely narcissistic in his misspelled, reply-failing posts on FFS.

Now that he has failed for two seasons running, instead of showing some humility and manning up and trying to carry on regardless with less of the sententious, grandiloquent shite that he comes out with, he quits instead? That's my take on him anyway 🙂

O'Mahony shouldn't have been dropped, though Warburton does need to come in so I would have dropped Faleteau. Excited to see the Sexton - Farrell partnership though. Also tbf, the final score flattered NZ last time. We're closer to beating them than we think, but Gatland's selection isn't giving us the best chance.

If you travel the first mile of a two mile race track at 30mph, at what speed would you need to travel the 2nd mile to reach an average of 60mph for the whole track?

Whatever. All blogs encounter haters. Especially if the writer is going to be on as much of a high horse as he was. Tough to run a solo blog and put up enough content to keep the eyeballs coming back. But if the ego is so big that you can't make it a collaborative affair with shared content, it's always just going to be a matter of time. It's not on people here if he packed it in. It's on those who wanted it to continue, but who didn't pitch in to share the workload of the undertaking.

Times up for me because i'm out in the morning.

Richie Porte...Form rider and second favourite
Simon Yates...Closest local hero to me (Lancashire) and Head to head for the white jersey with Meintjes
Louis Meintjes...Head to head rival for white jersey with Simon Yates
Romain Bardet...Top French hope this season
Marcel Kitell...Definite second best to Sagan but something has to give somewhere.
Rafal Majka....Polka dot jersey winner possibly

Christian Knees and Vasil Kiriyienka from the Sky team...CHOO CHOO for a few good looking team days this year for the Sky train.
      Andrey Zeits....Just because...

The 6.0 and 4.0 picks require a lot of luck. If you look through them there are a few with a good track record of actually finishing the tour but I went for the Sky train instead. The other option was Zabel's son and Sagan's brother just for the big names.

Other than that my gamble is that too many players will spend too much money on Froome and Sagan and it could all come crashing down so easily...literally...

Oh and I like my H2H picks for the white jersey which kinda makes a nice private game...

Was all set to get Porte, but if you study the route there are the route there are so many sprint opportunity, if Porte doesn't get yellow come Paris he doesn't justify the price. Sagan is likely to be 2nd top scorer minimum. if he doesn't crash.
I'm hoping Quintana will do what he does, which is to podium or win grand tours. While Porte never been on a grand tour podium, although that should change this year!
Cheap enablers are a lottery, I look to Bora, Movistar, BMC and EQS. There are helper points for having teammates doing well so that is worth considering as a way of breaking down close decisions.
Bardet this tour is designed for him, he just hasn't shown the form this year that place him on the podium.
Majka I like as a pick and being a Sagan teammate will get extra points when Sagan does well. Note he is going for the overall which is a double edged sword, as he might not be allowed to get the KOM and go in breakaways, which mean he may not live up to last year.
So much will depend on avoiding the inevitable first week crashes.

You'll struggle to get a great rank if you play 5 at the back. Can work for some GWs.

It's difficult to get a good TV with 5 at the back. Not enough money and spots to bring in offensive bandwagoners withiut sacrificing big guns. As a set and forget team 5 at the back is reasonable?

I'd say yes. If you had triple Chelsea for most of the season and could still get Sanchez Lukaku Kane Alli etc I'm sure you'd've had a good score.

I (allegedly) ran an experimental five at the back squad last season. For the (alleged) contest that this (alleged) second team took part in, there were some artificial constraints of requiring a defender or a keeper as a captain, and not allowing for any injured defenders to sit in your team (and thus enable an attacker to sub in). We also disallowed the AOA chip (allegedly). Because of those constraints, extra hits were required, and there was never an ability to captain Alexis, Kane, Kun, or whichever random expensive attacker one might have had.

Was sat comfortably top 75K for most of first third of season, slipped to 350K midseason when some big hitter captains had come through for traditional teams and clawed back to 175K by end of year.

        Allegedly

I might well try it, but not every week. I'd normally play a back 4, but if 2 4.5 defenders have good fixtures I wouldn't be shy in putting them all out.

And in this thing, a "premium" keeper was required and had to set out a starting lineup of five at back every week. If you soften some of the restrictions that were placed, I'd think you could land a pretty solid rank without too much difficulty

          1. Andy_Social
            • 11 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

You say 'premium' but of course you could strike lucky (or genius) and get the right busy keeper like Heaton, as well as the right 4.5 defender like McAuley. Of course, you're safer just spending big.

My bad on the verbiage. "Required" meant that it was one of the rules of this contest. Would have been more successful, potentially, if that strict "requirement" wasn't in place and if you had an extra 1.0 to spend elsewhere.

That said, most of the time, budget wasn't a worry, because you could only start five attackers. As a result, we were rarely up against it, money-wise.

Only if there are not any cheaper midfield and forward options. Last season you would have wanted a 3-4-3, something like:

        Heaton
        Cahill Daniels McAuley
        Sanchez(c) Alli Eriksen Hazard
        Kane Lukaku Costa

        Pickford Holgate Amat Capoue

If you played that 11 from GW1 and ignoring substitutions, transfers and chips (no WCs either) you would have scored 2,428 pts. Interesting how there is no Liverpool (e.g. Crabtree approach) or City or Utd in there.

Perhaps the lesson is choose players where the team relies upon one or two studs rather than where there are multiple options where they share the points (e.g. Liverpool, City, Utd).

          so your answer is "no"

I don't think he was asking for a general suggestion on how to play a 343, but was wondering about a five at the back approach. Do you have suggestions or thoughts on how that could be successful beyond "no, do something different"?

Liking the look of Lacazette without ever seeing him. He got 6 goals and an assist in his last 3 games. Like that Kane-esq hunger. Hope he's no more than 10m.

If, as we all now expect, Sanchez signs for City and his price is around 12m, would you seriously consider going without him? They can only score so many goals and with everything Sanchez normally got now split between Aguero, Jesus, KDB and the rest... is he actually worth it?

Tough call, but I think I would pay out. He never seems to tire and I can see him playing the most games out of that crowded attack/midfield squad at City. It would mean no Aguero, Jesus, KdB, Sane.

Arsenal's first XI looks decent. Wish they would sign a top defensive CM though:

      Cech
      Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
      Bellerin Xhaka ????? Kolašinac
      Ozil Sanchez
      Lacazette

Arsenal's first XI ALWAYS looks decent. But Wenger consistently breaks half of them and then discovers he doesn't have cover.

I think Arsenal have been short in the defensive CM and FW position for a few years now.

I know this issue was raised a couple of days ago, but this site is still painfully slow when I'm using Google Chrome (both PC and Android). No problems in Firefox/IE.
