Scout Report – Tom Ince

Huddersfield Town’s busy summer of recruitment continued on Tuesday with the signing of Derby County midfielder Tom Ince for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth up to around £10 million.

The 25-year-old winger agreed a three-year deal with the Terriers, with the option of extending his contract for a further season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner revealed what qualities he expects the former England U21 international will bring to his side:

“Everybody in England knows that Tom has high quality; he has been one of the best players in the Sky Bet Championship for many years now. He scores goals, creates them for others and is always a threat when he’s on the pitch… He has had a taste of the division for two short spells and he is desperate to show everyone that he belongs in the top division. I think he can be a big player for us.”

The History

Ince joined Liverpool’s academy in 2008 at the age of 16, and made his professional debut as a substitute in a League Cup tie against Northampton Town in September 2010.

He was then sent out on loan to League One side Notts County, where he scored twice in six matches, before joining Championship outfit Blackpool in August 2011 after declining a contract offer to remain at Liverpool.

The midfielder enjoyed a solid first season, registering six goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances, while he also scored in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Championship play-off final.

He then took his game to another level the following year, producing 18 goals and 14 assists in 44 matches. That prompted interest from both Premier League clubs and European giants such as Monaco and Inter Milan, but he ended up joining Crystal Palace on loan.

Ince totalled one goal and one assist in eight appearances for the Eagles before joining Hull City ahead of the 2014/15 season.

He failed to settle on Humberside and, following a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, it was another loan move, this time to Derby County, that saw Ince return to form.

The midfielder scored 11 goals in 18 appearances, convincing the Rams to sign Ince for £4.75 million in July 2015. And he has continued to put up impressive numbers over the last two seasons, tallying 26 goals and 15 assists in 90 matches.

Ince played six times for England U17s and U19s, and made 19 appearances for the U21s, producing three goals and seven assists.

The Prospects

Given the significant outlay made by the Terriers on Ince, it’s expected that the midfielder will command a regular starting spot in Wagner’s starting XI.

Last season, Ince made 47 of his 50 appearances in all competitions on the right wing, but he is equally capable of operating either on the opposite flank or even in a No 10 role.

His main qualities include his shooting, crossing, dribbling and ability to pick a pass, all of which should make him an intriguing Fantasy prospect.

Last term, it was Elias Kachunga (right) and Rajiv van La Parra (left) who were the favoured options out wide for Huddersfield, with Chelsea loanees Kasey Palmer and Izzy Brown sharing playing time in the central support role in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

The Terriers announced on Tuesday that Palmer will return to the club on a second season-long loan, so he looks to be a strong contender to start in the No 10 position.

Kachunga was Huddersfield’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, so he appears more likely to find a place in the side ahead of van La Parra, although the DR Congo international hasn’t played a lot of football on the left flank.

Given the number of additions made by Wagner already this summer, it’s clearly going to be crucial to analyse the Terriers during pre-season to assess what the likely starting XI will be.

Looking at Ince’s underlying statistics from last season, he impressively averaged a shot every 27.97 minutes, slightly superior to Palmer (30.83), and significantly better than both van La Parra (43.21) and Kachunga (52.27).

Indeed, only Fulham’s Sone Aluko managed more shots (134) than the 129 Ince produced in the Championship.

While around half of Ince’s goal attempts came from outside the box, he still averaged a shot from inside the penalty area every 55.51 minutes, again superior to Kachunga (64.68), Palmer (80.94) and van La Parra (84.21).

The former England U21 international also shone as a creator, averaging a key pass every 51.54 minutes, which while slightly inferior to Palmer (47.96), was better than both Kachunga (68.14) and van La Parra (164.20).

The data certainly indicates that Ince may well be the primary option among Huddersfield’s attacking midfielders, although Palmer also looks one to monitor should he be priced favourably.

Given his production, albeit in the Championship, Ince is likely to warrant a starting price of between 5.5 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With the Terriers not facing any of last season’s top seven over the opening six Gameweeks (cpl, NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn), members of Wagner’s side could well emerge as popular budget options.

But with latest club-record signing Steve Mounie, along with fellow forward Laurent Depoitre and set-piece ace Aaron Mooy to also consider, choosing the right target may prove difficult.

Fantasy managers will hope pre-season will provide all important clues, with Ince likely to be at the forefront of our thinking – particularly if he can wrestle some set-piece duties from Mooy.

The 25-year-old has previously failed to grasp his opportunities in the top flight, but having gained more first-team experience, he should now be ready to make an impact at this level.

Ince certainly looks to have the potential to flourish as an FPL asset, and a strong pre-season could see him emerge as a popular budget option given Huddersfield’s favourable opening schedule.

Thinking Kane , Lukaku , Defoe or
      Lacazette Lukaku Defoe
Either way if Lukaku goes to united he's in , look back on all the chances Ibra missed last season, if Lukaku gets that sort of service from Pogba and co he could get 30 pl goals easy . Hoping Defoe is 8.0 to compliment 2 big hitters

Hope this Lukaku deal goes through.... It would be so much fun to have a Kane/Lukaku/Jesus(or Kun) forward line. Barely even need a midfield or defence & imagine the captain hauls!

If Lacazette was 2.5m cheaper than Kane, and Ozil was 1.5m cheaper than Lacazette, would it be better to go with Alli/Eriksen from spurs, Ozil from Arsenal, and then Lukaku/Jesus +1 up front? Can't wait for these prices to be released

I guess your other premise is that Alli/Eriksen are also sub 10m material? Then, sure, but I'd expect all your premises to be wrong.

Lacazette most certainly will be at least 2.5m cheaper than Kane. Özil probably not 1.5m cheaper than Lacazette. Actually, they could be about the same price. People think Özil did badly, but his ppg was still quite reasonable 5.1 that gave KDB a 10.5 price, and his previous season was better. Aguero has averaged 5.5-6.0 ppg for several seasons. So you don't expect Lacazette to get there, do you? He should be priced with lower points expectation than Aguero was for this season, probably about the same price as Özil. Basically, I'd think he could be priced even lower than Özil, but I guess the transfer fee and the fact that he's very likely to be the lonely striker to start all matches dictates that he won't. Özil will likely cost you 9.5-10m, as will Lacazette. There's an argument that since Özil scored more the previous season, and still got 9.5 price for this season, he should definitely not be priced higher than that. That would be a reason to price both Lacazette and Özil at 9.5m max.

Eriksen and Alli should be significantly more expensive.

Yeah defo, it's a good rotation and I'm not discounting it at all; it's just I'm thinking of going all in and having virtually no bench to release funds elsewhere ... a complete change from my earlier thinking. Plenty of time for another 'about turn' though ...

I'm in a dilemma about 3x4.5 rotations. Take the above one:

Burnley without Keane could ship truckloads
Swansea could lose Siggy and Llorente leaving them fatally weak
WBA - despite their reputation hardly got any cleanies last season.

I'll be wanting my cheap defender to come on and at least have a shot at a clean sheet. I think I'll look for a 2rot or 3rot that have fixtures that are less easy but I feel more confident about.

      Very nice but:
I prefer big hitter wing backs for this year.
      I may play 4 3 3 or 4 4 2 dependent on pricing.
I always find one of the lesser sides don't work.
Early WC gives the chance of creating tfr wealth

      Does that make any sense?

Absolutely. Just depends on if a premium wing back can outperform a mid price midfielder.

Exactly. I have never known triple rotation to work that well. Also, out of 15 players at least 2 I choosewill be bare minimum cost.

Many of us looking at this ... would you choose to spend funds on Richie or the likes of Bellerin or the other Ars wingback for example? ... likely to be similarly priced

        1. Eze Really?
          • 9 Years

The obvious choice of a 6 mil mid is rarely clear until 4 or 5 weeks into the comp. Therefore, a big hitter WB could be a wise move early on especially. There will be the inevitable Josh King or Lanzini later on I am sure.

              I am thinking of:
              Valencia team and fixtures.
              Robertson if going to pool.
Milner if made a back and he gets in the team.
              Keeping an eye on Trippier.
Big hitters Alonso, Bellerin and a nailed City.
Baines but fixture putting me off.
              Olsson at swans

I'm pretty much with you - it's a question of whether I can afford a third decent wingback.

I've got Valencia and Cedric inked in. If Milner or Moses amazingly get listed as a defender i'll snap him up over a midfielder.

Otherwise, it's going to be a tough call.

Lukaku, particularly if still at Everton, shouldn't come that close to Kane. As a points source, he's about at par with Alli, Eriksen, Hazard and Mané.

Kane, meanwhile, is in his own class. He scored Aguero-like ppg records for last two seasons, then this season went to 7.5ppg, which is about 1.5ppg above Lukaku's and Aguero's record tallies. And he is 100% nailed on. He shouldn't be anywhere below 13m. I wouldn't be surprised if they reopened 14m bracket just for him.

Unless Chelsea buys another elite LB before the prices are released, there's no way to know he would be a rotation risk and he should be 7.0.

13th most points and 10th most ppg out of players who played more than 2 matches (and no. 1 in defenders). A midfielder or a forward with those points would cost you 10m+.

I agree with Waxys. Was my point all along. They have to close more of the gap to get something done. Or then just f off and forget about it. Maybe if Arsenal came to half way and bid €65M, that could initiate negotiations to come down with the price. As far as I understand this, Monaco isn't even negotiating yet. They rubbished the bid, and fixed a price.

Look at it this way: he's Monaco's key attacking creator, they already sold their other similar player (Bernardo) and if they lose Lemar too, they have to replace with an elite player or Mbappé leaves as well - which is probably part of Arsenal's plan: they want to lure Mbappé with Lemar, like PSG wants to lure Mbappé with Fabinho. Maybe Lemar is not worth €90M for Arsenal (I think he probably wouldn't be, he's the wrong type of player for them), but Monaco can legitimately see him as worth that for them and as they do not have to sell, they can ask what they see just.

Hi Paul. I mostly meant that if you'd think of him as replacement for Sanchez. That would probably leave your first team AM's all left footed (Lemar-Özil, or Lemar-Özil-Mahrez), and as a LW Lemar has mostly created chances through crosses, open play and set pieces - two things that probably would be not used at Arsenal. So, he would be wrong footed for that position, and would probably go to waste in that position.

Whereas if you would be replacing some of Cazorla, Ramsey or Özil in the central midfield by Lemar, that could actually be a good idea. He is fast, technically good with soft touch to ball, excellent passer, he doesn't shun defensive work and is positionally good, and as a bonus he has a lethal shot. So, if Cazorla is bust, and you'd end up with something like this, it could be deadly:

            ------Xhaka
            ---------------Lemar
            Mahrez---Özil----Sanchez
            ---------Lacazette

The problem here is that this is a bit Pep-like lineup. Lemar isn't exactly a defensive player, and doesn't have much physical presence. So, alternatively Lemar in Özil's place, and some more defensive and strong player in midfield. If Özil is leaving, Lemar could be a great replacement.

Or if he would indeed be the new RW, although, note that this comes with the risk that he has very limited experience as RW and might actually not adapt easily tactically. Or maybe he would. Anyway, I agree that if you're deciding between Lemar and Mahrez, then Lemar certainly has more chances to progress and more good years left.

All in all, might not be the type of player who should be priority to you. That defence does need some fixing still.

              hmmmm...good analysis...cheers

although I feel Lemar will adapt to RW...should not be much of a hassle
Agree with you on the defense part...but i feel what we need is more of a defensive backup rather than first team player...just my view might be wrong.

I agree so why move into a bigger stadium? The TV and commercial rights are huge but it is still a money merry go round. I laugh when all say the EPL is luck and get so much money. It all filters abroad anyway. I would be an advocate of limiting transfer spend overseas so the country that generates the money keep it.

Well, it's overseas broadcasting money that produces the money anyway. And it only filters abroad, because there are better players there. English players and players of English clubs are still overpriced compared to those playing overseas.

Move to a bigger stadium, because there's money in that too. No need to shun one source of money just because it's not the biggest. Although Arsenal also clearly has misread the market trends. They didn't see this abundance of money coming.

Spending 500 mil on a stadium to increase capacity by 25k (2 mil every 2 weeks) 38 mil a year. 14 years to recover the money. I am not saying no to it but there is both risk and slow recovery of income. If the clubs in the UK were patient and had all that money, foreign players would want to come and the transfer fees would not have to be paid at these levels.

Piecing together all the stories, the narrative seems to be that Arsenal offered €40M for Lemar, got rejected, tested the waters with Mahrez, was told he's over €45M, Wenger probably decided if he has to pay near that much it'd be better off trying again for Lemar, and so he bids again for €45M.
