The ScoutCast – Episode 227 – Lift Off

An unprecedented summer podcast arrives following the Fantasy Premier League launch, as Jonty, Andy and Luke join me in the afterglow of a joyous day.

Technically “on the beach” and fighting back to full fitness, we nonetheless brave the airwaves to chime in on the price list, reclassified players and some early formation dancing.

We glory in the potential bargains, lament the overpriced and make bold claims on our lineups that will doubtless be reversed come August 11. If Andy has Chris Brunt in his Gameweek 1 squad, I’ll eat my Free Hit chip.

The FPL Draft game gets a rinsing, and we end the show with our proud declaration of our team ID’s. A conclusion that leaves me feeling rather inadequate even before a ball has been kicked.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Wednesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Haha, tbh it was one of those where once we'd hit on the name everything flowed naturally - we'd had the name in mind and the site occupado in December last year, but obviously no point launching then!

those who choose Eriksen over Alli - why?

I'm probably leaning towards Alli, but I imagine the pro-Eriksen argument is centered around set-plays, his assists considered more likely to repeat next time around than Alli's goals, and a bit of a differential.

FWIW, Eriksen had a shockingly low chance conversion rate that should rebound next year (though possible not too far - his numbers are always lower than average based on the number of long shots he seems to take each year).

    2. The Tinkerman
      • 8 Years

Eriksen has guaranteed opportunities from set plays, and as stated above should revert to the mean with his chance conversion. But for me, it's due to low ownership from the off. 50/50 between him and Alli otherwise for me.

Set pieces. Spurs had the second highest average corners p/game last year (7.18), Eriksen topped it taking 195 corners (Siggy 183, Ozil 143 were next). Team average goals from set pieces was 12.1 last season, Spurs just above average scoring 13.

I currently have Alli, but still undecided.

I think both are nailed and I actually have both, if I had to go for one I'd go Jesus, but I also think Bernardo Silva could be a very good pick from City

Guardiola loves rotation. To say that either of these players will play week in week out simply isn't true. That said we still need attacking assets from City due to their strength going forward. I think I'm more inclined to go toward Sané rather than Jesus because the investment is less and there's a lot of strikers I want other than Jesus.

I prefer Sane, I can him playing left of a front three and Jesus right with Aguero in the middle. Both good options but midfield classification and more points for a goal means I'm on Sane for now. Will be looking at line-ups in pre-season.

      1. Karan14
        • 8 Years

        I'm also leaning towards Sane.

10.5m is a lot of investment in Jesus and I'm not even sure how much he's going to be rotated.

Pages flying like a library in a hurricane.

My turn maybe? Here's my team as it stands as per the pod last night:

    Foster / Myhill
Bertie Dawson Hefele / Dunk 4.0 (will be the lowest owned 4.0 at deadline)
    Kdb Mane Willian Tadic Ritchie
    Kane Kaku / Hemed

I just love the value here at the moment, only thing giving me pause for thought are the two 4.5s, I think I put them in just as a last minute thing and tried to defend them but I think probably they will change, am considering swapping them both over to just non-rotating 4.5s or maybe going for a 5.0 / 4.0 4.0 and throwing caution to the wind! Fabianski v Foster I'm still mulling over with Dawson also at the back. Also Hemed not starting potentially is something I need to ponder, but bench fodder anyway.

    Thoughts? Mad? Good? Value?

    Any replies appreciated!

    1. Make Arrows Green Again
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Hemed not starting would be an issue if he has even reasonable ownership as his value will drop, leaving you with a 0.5 early season black hole in funds. You might end up being 'hemed' in.

Rest of the team looks really good, and a bit different from the templates floating around.

For me defence is too weak, would downgrade KDB to Sane or B Silva, upgrade Hefele and maybe upgrade Willian to Pedro. I don't like Tadic as a pick, but that's just me.

Thanks mate - yeah I'm considering Sane! I do love KdB though.

Don't like Pedro, and B Silva is an assisting-the-assister type I think!

        Cheers!

I owned Tadic a lot last season, and I kept getting burnt. Yeah he has good fixtures and is probably a decent prospect at 6.5m but 3 goals/7 assists in 27 games isn't the best. If you average out 108 points across 2411 minutes that's 4 points per game.I would probably avoid, just my thoughts.

      1. Individual
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Valid points, but on Saints, I'm being guided by our article on Southampton by Prokoptas which pointed out that Saints had a horrific goal conversion rate last year (7.5%, equal to Sunderland) where the average was 10.7%, they got 11.4% in 15/16, so Bertie's creativity stat in particular I like there if they can sort it out, plus the opening fixtures. A bit of a gamble to some extent and will be watching pre season, but Tadic at 6.5 rang my "bargain klaxon"

      Francis + Dunk/Yedlin looks a fantastic rotation imo. I prefer it to a 5.0 + 4.0 also.

Thanks Lionel! Yeah it's a real polarisation in terms of value isn't there; I hadn't considered Bournemouth's defence but I might have a look at that.

Hemed lol the Israeli superstar, takes pens for Brighton (shared with Murray), 20 appearances 19 off the bench last season, if they don't sign a striker a chance he'll get me some bench points

decent. Doubling up on Sou is fine as they keep CS; having McCauley is fine as he scores goals, however Dawson could be the one this season for goal scoring

      1. Peps Pups
        • 7 Years

McCauley scored 6 last season where Dawson managed 4. I think both players will score, it will be a toss up between the two all season i reckon.
        McCauley with a 26% ownership
        Dawson with a 4% ownership
So Dawson could well be the go to man if you looking to get ahead of the pack

I think Ayew and Carroll represent decent value for cheapies - but I get your point.

Can always upgrade to a playing 5th defender by compromising on Kompany/Phillips if needs be. JWP or Henderson for 5.5 might be a decent shout.

Is having two 4.5 mids a problem considering they won't be played unless someone gets injured.

    Foster-Myhill
    Ake-Lindelof-Kolasinac-Cedric-Rangel
    Coutinho-Sane-Ramsey-RLC-Carroll
    Kane-Defoe-Lukaku

Don't think so thats what I'm currently doing and they're pretty good 4.5s

It's a little risky, sure - the big problem is team flexibility. It's going to be tough for you to get in rising midfielders with that setup. However, if you are committing to a 4-3-3 definitively prior to the first WC, then it's alright.

Out of the top 6, can one get away without having attacking coverage for Pool and Chelsea?

    For City - Aguero
For United - Kaku and Pogba
For Arsenal - Ramsey (Kolasanic to an extent if he is LWB)
    For Spurs - Kane

Neither have amazing fixtures so I'm, happy going without at the start.
