Following The Herd

Fresh from my first community article Emotion versus Algorithms, which pitted the cold hold logic of Fantasy Football Scout’s Rate My Team tool against human emotion, I will now try to tackle the second dilemma facing my Gameweek 1 squad select – following the herd, or rather when to follow it and when to run for the hills to avoid it.

What strikes me ahead of the new season is that there seems to be a real lack of difference in the bulk of rate my team posts, leading me to think that this summer’s herd mentality is particularly strong.

One factor could be the way advice is sought, usually through rate my team style posts. Often the feedback given is from Fantasy managers looking to justify their own team selections, this can fuel a consensus of thought and help templates to form.

Taking a look at some of the more popular picks there is certainly evidence to suggest that the herd has moved beyond a canter and is now running at full steam.

The Herd’s Top Picks

Kieran Trippier currently sits in 20.3% of FPL teams – not bad for a player that finished last season on 51 points. The herd has decided that he will prosper as the number one right back at Tottenham after Kyle Walker’s departure. With a lack of competition for his place there is certainly logic to following the herd here.

But then there’s Ben Foster to consider. The West Brom stopper is the third highest owned goalkeeper, despite keeping a mere six clean sheets in a Tony Pulis managed side last time out. A herd mentality has kicked in though surrounding his strong early fixtures (BOU, burn STK, bha, WHU), which has made him the key 4.5 goalkeeper to own. But why are more not backing West Ham’s Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, both of whom could rack up considerable save points over that same run?

Another herd favourite is Reuben Loftus-Cheek, who sits in an incredible 15% of FPL sides and is the top selected 4.5 midfielder. On loan at Crystal Palace the herd seems adamant he will maintain value and provide a source of points when needed. But my personal view is that he is far from nailed on and is an early price fall waiting to happen, especially if he doesn’t start Gameweeks 1 and 2. Why are more not selected Swansea’s Tom Carroll, who is priced the same, is a nailed on starter and looks set to take on some set piece duties should Swans lynchpin Gylfi Sigurdsson depart as expected? Carroll has an ownership of just 4.3% despite looking like the stronger option.

Regarding these examples – are we following the herd for reassurance? Or does the herd genuinely think that Loftus Cheek has the edge over Carroll, Foster offers more than Hart and that Trippier will be another Kyle Walker – a 5.5 defender that makes a mockery of his price?

There are plenty more examples of the herd mentality taking hold of squad selection. Southampton defenders are another case in point. The Saints have strong opening fixtures (SWA, WHU, hud, WAT, cry) and their new boss Mauricio Pellegrino is seen as a defensive minded manager. But why has Cedric got 15.1% ownership when he looks unlikely to start the season after only just returning to training from a hectic summer of  international commitments? The answer lies, perhaps, in the herd mentality – the same herd that has decided to ignore his team mate Maya Yoshida, who looks certain to start, has scored in pre-season but is owned by a mere 1.3%.

Going Against The Herd Is Tough

It is hard to ignore such frequent advice about players such as Cedric or Loftus-Cheek, especially when backed with good algorithm predictions such as discussed in my previous article. It’s especially hard when you bring in the fear factor.

If the community is right and we try to veer away from players such as Trippier and Foster then we could find ourselves behind the curve.

None of us like to feel we have been influenced and I’m sure we could all justify each or our current player selections.  But step back and take a moment to ask yourself, are you in danger of following the herd and where is your point of difference?

You should also consider why you feel safer in the herd. If you gain comfort from knowing that you won’t fall too behind serious FPL players then that is a perfectly understandable.

If there is one area where the herd may come under greatest threat it is around premium forwards, and in particular Harry Kane.

The Tottenham striker is the second most popular forward with 35% ownership but is still a clear 13% behind Romelu Lukaku‘s commanding 48.1% support. The herd is clearly unsure whether or not last season’s golden boot winner will prosper playing home games at Wembley or can overcome his traditional slow starts.

The herd is also wary to offer any other premium forwards the same commitment they are showing to Lukaku, with Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette or Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata, each sitting in less than a fifth of sides.

There is less than two weeks before Gameweek 1’s kick off and it remains to be seen whether following the herd or flying solo will prosper as strategies. But if the herd’s picks are to fail they will need to act fast in the transfer market, as the bigger the ownership means the faster their price will fall.

Thanks for this. Certainly looking tough to go against the herd.

I've just had a look at my side and was pleased to see that seven of my 15 are owned by less than 10% of managers.

I do hope this doesn't indicate another non-dullard season 😉

There is a herd mentality in certain ways but not in others. For example it might look like a herd move on KDB, but anyone seeing him rip up Spurs and Real Madrid (even though pre-season) is going to pick him on what he is showed them as opposed to going off a template. However someone like Cedric is classic herd...

With Cedric there is a fear of missing the boat on Southampton's amazing early fixtures and hoping that even if he is absent for GW1 he will make up for it with attacking contributions over GW2 to 6 compared to Yoshida.

Aguero could be a massive differential early on. If he is scoring then Pep will have to play him, even if he doesn't want to. Personally I don't have the nerve to risk him at that price. Certainly Jesus still looks like Pep's favourite based on pre-season but it is unlikely that he will be as explosive as last season.

I'm joining a cash 'Lazy League' where I pick a team, and leave it for the duration of the season.

Fixtures therefore don't matter. I need to pick players that are not injury prone, guaranteed starter all season, not likely to get sold in Jan and will get maximum points...

Who would be your top three players? Thanks in advance.

Go for the star players at inferior sides, don't go taking any players with rotation risk ie willian fabregas etc. My opinion for that league would be to go with a lanzini or shaqiri(stars of their teams), in the defence trippier is good but surround him with proven nailed on players. Up front go for the heavy hitters and a known cheaper guaranteed starter maybe one of the promoted strikers or benteke etc.

I went for an "All L" team for my lazy league picks- Lloris, Lossi, Lukaku, Lamela, Lacazette, Lanzini, etc.

You could do it with "As" if you accept Alex MccCarthy as your backup keeper.

One that I personally don't understand is Willian. Good player, never looks that threatening to me always seems to be out wide rather than in the danger zone. Got 8 goals last season but only 3 assists. Yet he's very popular on here. Hmmm....

It's the Hazard injury, though. Last season, Willian was a bit-part player. Now he'll presumably be tasked with a role as Chelsea's chief creative force in Hazard's absence, for the first few weeks at least.

    2. JohnnyMagrinho
        6 years, 9 months ago

Hazard is out for start of the season and Willian looks set to take his place.

He's undoubtedly skillful and if he was playing more he'd definitely register more goals and assists.

Only issue is when Hazard comes back - but a lateral swap to Fabregas (if he can continue his end of last season form) might be being considered by a lot of players.

Will Alonso not be taking FKs though, and isn't that how Willian gets most of his goals?
Don't get me wrong he's a good player; is there not a chance that Conte starts the season with a 3-5-2 to fit Batshuai in though?

Agree with this. Whilst Willian may be a decent short term option, one of the fixtures is against Spurs away which is hardly a gimme. After that you'll need to be looking to transfer him out.

Thanks for the submission - I've enjoyed both of your recent articles!

Within the first few gameweeks, I feel as if there as a certain level of safety associated with backing high-ownership players. We have so little data to go on right now (and much of it may end up being misleading), that it's tough to make convincing cases against the groupthink meta. Based on my current side, I look to have (either consciously or subconsciously) followed the herd and backed a number of popular players, but I consider that a positive right now. I'd rather take my chances on low-ownership differentials when I have more data to back up or validate my anti-meta moves than I could hope to have right now.

Not for me. Kane and Kun are in. I rate Lukaku and last seasons haul justifies his pick but I still believe Kane and Kun are the two best strikers in the league.

    5. JohnnyMagrinho

Forster is a prime example of this.

He didn't make a whole lot of saves last season, but he kept 14 Clean Sheets.
That's the same amount as DDG and he actually registered 2 more saves than him.

And he's £0.5m cheaper. Both Soton and Man U have favourable early fixtures, but Forster surely has to be seen as a more affordable way to get good points in the first few GWs.

Why not both? ManU and Soton that is, not DDG and Forster.

DDG is the cheapest way into ManU's defence right now, I'm happy to own him and Bertrand.

          Mixed metaphor?
If it's barking up the wrong tree then it's probably a pack.

And even packs and herds tend to have leaders.
One moves and the rest follow, but not necessarily in the best direction.

His minutes / assist ratio was exceptionally good when he played. Obviously not sustainable over a full season but with Spurs' usual clean sheet potential at home (Wembley-itis aside) he seems very under-priced at 5.5m and that is what everyone is jumping on.

If his price falls to 4.4...then perhaps down to 4.2 then there's no where to go should you need to make that transfer.

Surely better to have a bench player who will retain or even increase in value?

Why not save that headache and swerve altogether and steer clear of the herd on this one?

Great article! I tore up my team recently, due to a mixture of over thinking and seeing cheap bandwagons, which freed up cash.

Did Defoe > Austin, yet my gut says stick with Defoe. Not sure why he's fallen out of favour.

I don't think it matters that much. There will always be similarities between RMTs especially on a site like this. There probably aren't more than 50 very popular players and perhaps another 50 outside shots, the same names will keep cropping up. You'll still struggle to find 2 squads exactly the same and it's the differences that are important.
Every week there'll be 1 change in each team (on average), either swapping out an injured or out of form player or playing the fixtures. It's the little things that make big impacts down the line, swapping in a playing 5th mid rather than swapping out your injured 4th, for example.

Every year I find myself transferring for injuries or players out of favour in the first couple of weeks and am playing catch up such that I feel I have to wild-card early - which I always regret later.
Unless the herd all pick 13/14 performing starters the differences will grow until a long-term template emerges. Even then the successful teams will break a little from the herd by finding an Allen or Capoue at the right time and then the herd's 1 step behind.

Being 1 step ahead of the herd is what makes the difference, getting in before the knee-jerk. It only takes 1 or 2 deviations from the template to move ahead but I bet the template will miss at least 5 or 6 from the dream team at the end of GW3

Hopefully I am a herd of one or very few as I post this. Enjoyed both articles on team building and have decided against that "herd mentality" to some degree when looking at building my team this season. To start, I have gone with the infrequently used, 5-3-2, which is against the more proven and used 3-4-3 and 3-5-2.

While we can discuss the likes of going big at the rear guard and the risk it carries, I feel the the formation and strategy could pay dividends, hopefully early on to continue in their vein. If rewards have not been seen by GW4, then an early activation of the WC would be warranted and I could change my strategy and formation in order to gain back what was lost up to that time.

When building my team I have considered TSB% to a degree. From past articles and pundits, 30% TSB seems to be an "accepted" ownership when a player could be considered a "must have" or "template" player. To date only a handful of FPL players fall under that figure; Lukaku, Kane, Alli, Coutinho. Next players closing in on 30% ownership is de Gea at 28.3%.

Building around 3 or all 4 of these players should then, be key to your season. Many RMTs I have seen have a combination of these players. Many are hesitant to double up on Spurs until we see how they perform at Wembley. In my squad for GW1, I have all but Alli to start the season, but depending on how the early weeks go could make an entrance as early as GW3.

RMT selections have been all over the board on defense. Trippier continues to "trip me up." That lone selection has me lumped in with the "herd" as for what he could potentially do. Yet offensively, we don't want to double up with Allli/Eriksen/Kane. So the logic doesn't quite justify his inclusion. However at 5.5m I have options if I move him.

At United, we have floated the idea of new boy, Lindelof, who might not be nailed on or potentially going to be eased into the starting XI. We have Valencia, who during United's UEL run saw a considerable amount of rotation and now the transfer rumors of Aurier could be chasing more owners away in the direction of Blind or the more expensive Bailly. For now, I have settled on Valencia, an offense minded defender, who I hope will get on the offensive score sheet early based on their fixtures.

Alonso will anchor the defense at 7.0m, he the highest priced defender, who looking at the 7.0m midfielders his inclusion can be justified. Or can it? Chelsea haven't looked exactly spot on during pre-season, but just how much do you put into these early, tune up fixtures? I probably put more into poor performances than swoon over those who (hello Andre Gray last season) who tore it up.

With Pep and his defensive buys, you gotta think City is going to be tough on the entire pitch. Up front they should lead the EPL in scoring and defensive, if Kompany remains healthy top Spurs 17 CS last season. So Kompany gets a nod as a starting defender at 6.0. His end of the season performance was dominating, hopefully we see that same drive and desire this season from the Belgian.

Initially it was Cedric and Bertrand to start the season, but I have faded from both and shifted to Yoshida, who was a cornerstone in the later weeks of last term. He's got good stats, BPS ability and even finds the net now and then. Toss in the CS potential of the first 11 GWs for So'ton and Yoshida could be a nice surprise at 1.3 TSB%.

Not many manager spend 30.0m on their defense, I did. Up front it's no surprise I am running with the herd, selecting Lukakau and Kane to start at the top of the formation with a 4.5m bench player (Quaner). The midfield still hold question marks, especially with Coutinho. Will he or won't he leave for Barca? Right now, he is my 9.0m option to anchor the midfield. I continue to build a non herd midfielder with the risky selection of Pogba. Now owned at 21.2%, his numbers are increasing since Matic has been acquired, which should allow Pogba more attacking potential. Finally for GW1, it's Willian, based on his set piece fixtures and the fact Hazard is out of the Chelsea starting XI when the season opens.

So while there is a method to my madness, I would like to think in some regards I am avoiding the herd, but when it comes to TSB% of some players I am in line with many other managers.
