Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League Tuesday

A Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick grabs the attention, but it is keeper Simon Mignolet who deserves the plaudits as Liverpool win 2-1 at Hoffenheim in their Champions League play-off match.

And a pre-season match after the start of the league campaign? Man City travel to Spain for just that.

Rotation? What rotation?

Jurgen Klopp named an unchanged side, and even the same bench, for the trip to Hoffenheim, which suggests that rotation might be a factor for Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace.

It also highlights the slenderness of a Liverpool squad that is now well placed to be involved in plenty more high-level midweek European matches before Christmas.

That could have ramifications in both the short and long term.

The front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah were prominent in Germany, but they will struggle to maintain their brand of pacey, high-pressing intensity if required to play twice a week for the foreseeable future.

A late Hoffenheim goal kept the tie alive, making it very difficult for Klopp to consider resting players in the second leg – even with a visit from Arsenal coming just four days later.

The attacking trio are far and away the most popular Liverpool players in Fantasy Premier League, with all enjoying more than 20% ownership. Something will likely have to give at some point, be it form or fatigue.

Neither scenario is attractive for their FPL owners.

Two full-backs, one star

A pair of 4.5-priced full-backs, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alberto Moreno, took to the field against the Germans, and the former had a night to remember.

The young right-back continues to deputise for the injured Nathaniel Clyne. He’s also growing in stature as a set-piece taker and opened the scoring with a fine free-kick.

There’s a lot to love about a full-back with so much potential for goals and assists – particularly at that price – but the chance of clean sheet points is another matter entirely.

Liverpool’s defence managed 12 shut-outs last season. On the evidence of the first two matches of this campaign, they’ll struggle to surpass that modest sum.

Having conceded three goals at Watford, they could easily have done the same in Germany, relying on the profligacy of their hosts and a superb display from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who saved a penalty amid a range of excellent stops.

Moreno continues to look the weakest link in a porous backline and even the sainted Alexander-Arnold was at fault for Hoffenheim’s goal, appealing for an offside instead of getting on with the rather more pressing matter of stopping Mark Uth from getting in on goal unopposed.

The youngster, currently owned by just 2.7% in FPL and also boasting a share of corners, has very tempting attacking credentials at such a knock-down price, but Liverpool are some way short of impressive as a defensive unit.

Milner still out of position

One player Klopp could have used to shore up the Reds’ leaky left flank was James Milner.

Having impressed as a left-back while classified as a midfielder in FPL last season, the former England international ironically now seems destined for a midfield role now he’s down as a defender this year.

That could be an advantage to us – if he gets the pitch-time.

Milner only came on for the last half an hour in Germany as a straight swap in midfield for Jordan Henderson. On Saturday, against Watford, he played the last five minutes in place of Salah.

Klopp himself has stated that Milner is like having a new signing in midfield, which is just as well when Adam Lallana is injured and Philippe Coutinho determined to leave.

With specialist left-backs Moreno and new man Andrew Robertson – who is yet to even make the matchday squad for the Reds – at his disposal, the manager has so far been true to his word regarding the veteran.

Should Milner also snatch back penalty-taking duties, he could be a steal, even at 6.5, for an out of position defender.

But for now, that seems unrealistic. He’s currently an expensive bit-part player, albeit one who provided an assist for Liverpool’s second goal in Germany.

Firmino on form, not fire

A generous 8.5 FPL price has prompted 23.7% of managers to go with Firmino up front, and he provided an immediate reward with a penalty against Watford last weekend.

In Germany, he showed his creative talents, dropping deep to play Mane and Salah into the space that he created.

But as a striker, he was limited to just the one big chance on the night, while his attacking team-mates were given, and squandered, rather more goalscoring opportunities.

The Brazilian supplied two goals (one from the spot) and three assists in pre-season and his role is more facilitator than finisher.

His price remains attractive, but 8.5 is still a lot of money for a man who could end up with more assists than goals this season, particularly if Milner does start looming again as a spot-kick alternative.

City get a random run-out

The first Tuesday after the start of a long and gruelling new campaign is the perfect time to be travelling to Spain for a friendly – if you’re Pep Guardiola.

Man City’s entire first-team squad – minus Kyle Walker for personal reasons – boarded the plane for Girona and many got a run-out in what the club span as ‘an intensive training camp’.

Four City players – Douglas Luiz, Aleix Garcia, Pablo Maffeo and Marlos Moreno – are on loan at La Liga side Girona, which also happens to be owned by Guardiola’s brother, Pere, and City are reportedly considering making an investment in the Spanish club.

Add all that up and an interestingly timed post-pre-season pre-season friendly was the result.

Guardiola again went with a three-man defence that included Tosin Adarabioyo, John Stones and Eliaquim Mangala – with Danilo and Leroy Sane taking up the wing-back roles.

Meanwhile, new signing Bernardo Silva also started and fellow midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was given a 20-minute run-out as he returned from a knee injury that has kept him out for eight months.

The match also provided both Yaya Toure and Raheem Sterling – the latter playing up front – with some extra pitch-time. Gabriel Jesus was brought on for the last 20 minutes.

New arrival Benjamin Mendy was included in the squad as he steps up his recovery from a thigh complaint but the former Monaco left-back was not even named on the bench, suggesting that he will be eased into contention by his manager.

City lost 1-0, in case you were wondering.

Same for me. Nothing knee jerk about it though. And the way I see it I've upgraded my mid massively with a big hitter from a top team and got a slightly worse 3rd striker - a position I don't expect much from anyway. Two home games coming up to see how he goes.

Zaha being Injured as already confused me on my transfers. He's in that awkward price region where they ain't many choices. I don't like Willian, Chelsea are all over the place and are going to spurs. Ramsey I ain't convinced on him at all.

I've been looking at maybe Arnautovic, yes they got smashed at man u but thats one game. I don't get why everyone is taking -4 and -8s to bring in Huddersfield players and players like Xhaka. 1 good game and everyone goes crazy for them when realistically that's very unlikely to continue.

Any other suggestions for a 7m or lower midfielder, rather not take any hits on transfers as I'm keeping faith in my original selection which is unlike the vast majority of people it seems

Where have I criticised anyone ? Saying I'm not sure why everyone is jumping on Huddersfield players is not criticism. And saying I'm keeping faith in my original selection whilst others jump ship is not criticism either, it's a fact. I'm guessing you have hit the panic button already and got offended I apologize.

It's the overall tone. "1 good game and everyone goes crazy for them"; "unlike the vast majority of people it seems".

Didn't buy the Zaha hype to start off with so haven't got that issue. The reason people have bought Xhaka/Hudd players is to free up funds elsewhere either to upgrade now, or bank it (see below) 🙂

Tone is very hard to pick up over text. Was no malicious intended at any point. I've seen people taking -8 -12s how is that not panicking early on ? Also seen people doing sideway transfers same price for same price for minus points simply because they had a good game on the weekend.

Well, you're saying other people are not keeping faith in their original picks, but fact of the matter is Zaha is out and needs replacing. Doing a sideways move, or taking a hit, is just two different strategies. Doesn't mean anyone is hitting the panic button, there just isn't that many 7m options worth considering.

    3. ☆Khaz
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

People don't take hits to bring in Xhaka and Huddersfield players. They take hits to bring in the 8m+ mids, and unfortunately that means downgrading elsewhere. I downgraded in defence in order to afford a upgrade. Many others I've seen has downgraded Zaha and banked the money for future upgrades. Thats probably the smartest (and hardest) thing to do 🙂

      1. Holteendersinthesky
        • 7 Years

Your correct people don't take hits for Huddersfield players etc. They are However contributing to - points in the first gameweek because people are pressing the panic button early on after 1 game. All I'm saying is 1 good game and people forget Xhaka gets booked nearly every game, hardly does anything going forward and is a red card waiting to happen. It's ok though he scored 10 points on the weekend so he's worth the - points. I feel taking - points early on is just a recipe for disaster when most people will be taking - points to get them players back out in a few gameweek down the line

Ramsey I still ain't convinced on minutes, and if he does start he's going to probably be taking elnenys role sitting in the middle which makes me doubt his attacking threat with probably Lacazette, ozil and welbeck infront of him. Never easy going to stoke either. With Willian it's not so much him. More the team don't convince me, Chelsea are struggling to get a starting 11 together reminds me of my Sunday league team ha. So although he's a great player going against a strong spurs team who don't concede many can you rely on him getting attacking points.

GWK 1 provided us with some very interesting set piece takers that have sprung some surprise FPL assets to the fore. I've seen a few people talking about it on the site so I thought I'd put them all together and summarise whether they would be good options or not. IMO

Granit Xhaka- £5.6m - Took 8 corners for Arsenal mainly from the right side and ended up with 2 assists which started a band wagon and early price rise. Also took 1 free kick. He is a cheap enabling option but I can't help think he'll rack up the cards due to his combative nature on the pitch. Probably best to stay away.

Trent Alexander Arnold- £4.5m - Took 2 corners against Watford and also scored last night from a free kick against Hoffenheim. Klopp seems to like him and he looked lively at the weekend. However, caveats are that he is a rotation risk with Nathaniel Clyne coming back from injury as well as Liverpools poor ability to keep clean sheets. Could be great value as a 4th or 5th mid. I would monitor him.

Maya Yoshida- £5.0m- Took a free kick at the end of the match against Swansea that almost won Southampton the match. However, it looked as though it was just a one off set piece due to players like Tadic and JWP normally on set pieces. If you don't have a Southampton defender, he could be a good option but i do believe Stephens, Cedric and the more expensive Bertrand are better routes into that defence.

Ben Davies- £5.5m- Took 4 corners for Spurs against Newcastle and capped off his performance with a goal from open play and full baps. If he's sharing corner duties with Christian Eriksen, then I think he is a fantastic option and a great differential to Kieran Trippier when he returns from injury. He's also due to rise in price soon so anyone wanting to pounce on him should do now. Only caveat is the uncertainty around Danny Rose as you'd have to think he would gain his place back if he doesn't leave this summer.

Daley Blind- £5.5m- Took 7 corners and 1 free kick against a poor West Ham side. He's been known to take set pieces for Man Utd in the past so this comes as no surprise. If he was nailed, then he would be in all of our squads due to his bonus magnet potential. He could be worth a punt though and is great value for money while Luke Shaw is out.

Marcos Alonso- £7.0- The gem of attacking defenders. He took 2 free kicks against Burnley, almost scoring one as he was denied by a fine save from Tom Heaton. I have him in my team and I was disappointed he didn't get any points, however he scored a few free kicks last year so if there's an opportunity, he will step up. Maybe a bit expensive for a defender but until Chelsea sign a back up LWB, no one is taking his place. He's also fixture proofdue to his abundance of attacking threat.

Sorry for the Story, and sorry if I missed anyone out. Maybe should've submitted this as an article but oh well. Hope I helped anyone considering these players.

The 100m salary cap in the Fox Sports PL game is so frustrating. My TV has gone up 2m, meaning I can't afford to replace Zaha (current value 5.7m), as I effectively only get 3.7m (5.7m less the 2m TV I have gained) of that to spend on a replacement due to the 100m cap.

If my TV continues to rise, it's going to get to the point where can't afford to replace anybody in my team, without downgrading drastically elsewhere.

It's effectively penalising players for their success, like the American draft systems does in north american sports. I'm half yank, but don't think I will be playing an American based fantasy game again.

I think it's kind of a good idea! We see in FPL that you can have a very lucky GW1 and be rewarded with both points and price rises. The best players will be able to beat any price can and if they start to struggle then it swings back the other way in their favour.

It's it a bit like the waiver system in FPL draft that rewards the players who are struggling with first dibs on new players, thus leveling the playing field.

Luckily i've got a strong squad, so i'm now planning to bench Zaha and play Ake instead (also have Ince and Ollson on bench), so my plan now is to ride out Zaha's injury.

Good idea. I'm going to play RLC, (surely nailed now?) and roll the transfer. 7.0 bracket whelms me not.

I was tempted by RLC in FPL, but was put off him by his high ownership. If he continues to blank his price will plummet

Back having a crack at this game after two years on the lash.

Just the Zaha problem this week, I fancy replacing him with Ramsey or Atsu.

Slightly favouring Atsu as banking £2.0m at this stage can be handy, plus he's got better fixtures.

What are you Zaha owners saying?

He has the potential to score more heavily, he's a starting XI player too as far as I can see. At his best 7m could prove a bargain. But immediate fixtures aren't great.

That was Pulis' Stoke. Hughes' Stoke are woeful. Was it two 4-0 tonkings against Spurs last year? I remember a few years ago when Spurs' top four hopes died at Stoke.

The next in line for pens at Swansea is one of the key mysteries I'm hoping to unlock.

Sigurdsson has dominated them for so long that at this stage to say it was Carroll or anyone else would be speculation - hope it is though as I own him.

If Chadli joins I expect it to be him though.

There's some risk. I definitely think he's a starter going forward but could also see Elneny keeping his place this weekend after good performances against Chelsea and Leicester. Long term I think it's Ramsey's spot, not so sure that he's a guaranteed starter against Stoke though.
