The Technical Area – Pogba and Mkhitaryan

Successive 4-0 routs of West Ham United and Swansea City suggests the spirit of attacking football looks to have finally returned to Old Trafford.

Bolstered by the summer acquisitions of Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United’s attacking output has generated a huge amount of buzz within Fantasy circles.

Having written in the pre-season that the Red Devils were my top pick to improve their goalscoring numbers in 2017/18 (after underperforming their projected output by over 10 goals last term), my own projection system was bullish on their potential to produce early returns.

Yet even I didn’t expect the goals to flow so freely over the opening weeks. With the fixtures continuing to align in their favour (at least over the next five Gameweeks), the case for us to increase our investment in United’s attack is strong. Indeed, though many managers have coverage already in the form of Romelu Lukaku – FPL’s most selected player with 55% ownership – the prospect of doubling up is a significant temptation.

This week’s Technical Area will be digging into the performances of two in-vogue midfield assets – Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – in an attempt to tease out the optimal Fantasy prospect.

Two Gameweeks in, Pogba and Mkhitaryan currently occupy first and second place respectively for FPL midfielders.

Pogba followed up an eight-point opener with an explosive 15-point performance in Gameweek 2, while Mkhitaryan has returned 10 and 11 points in impressively consistent fashion. Yet despite the similarity of their totals, the manner in which the pair have produced their points has been very different.

Mané - Eriksen - Mhki (Carroll, RLC)

    Is this a good midfield?

Just want cover from the big hitters, and only loss is no City coverage (can bring in Jesus/Kun of course)

I find City coverage in midfield is too complicated right now...no one is nailed except de Blanke for 10m which is too much for my taste

One game and he's 'de Blanke'!

He got near to 200 points last season and clocked up 21 assists.

      Oh dear.

Alli and Eriksen are 9.5m this season. They got 225 points last year. How much more do yo think they are going to score now that they are fully aware they don't cost 8.5m anymore?

I think KDB will deliver but points will come in random batches in GWs when Jesus or aguero will also hit big hauls. He is also on corners and some set pieces. He is my city cover as well. Patience needed

I'm not saying de Blanke won't deliver, but I think there will be 4+ mids that will deliver par or better for less:

      Mhki, Pogba, Alli, Eriksen, Mané

Warning about using the new chip - free hit: IT DOES NOT CANCEL OUT HITS TAKEN PRIOR TO ACTIVATING in the way that a wildcard does. If you look at the rules section on fpl, the information IS there, but it's not explained explicitly.

Here's a link to someone who has fallen foul to the way it works.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/08/20/scout-notes-gameweek-2-sunday-5/?hc_page=33#hc_comment_16265319

He took a hit to get 2 new players, then later that week activated the free hit chip.

However, for next week, his team is as it was BEFORE the hits, so he hasn't got the 2 players he wanted, but he's still had the points hit.

Pretty sure that with the way some people play on here they will also fall foul of this mistake i.e. assume it's a 'one-week wildcard'.

I mean, I could understand if it just didn't cancel the point penalty, but it still penalizes you for the hits while not letting you keep the transfers.

The point penalty points not cancelling is a little surprising, but the rest of it obvious to me as you are returning to the previous weeks, so any transfers you've made that GW would obviously be lost..

Team reverts to how it was at the BEGINNING of the gameweek (before any activity), so it seems mad but you'd lose any transfers you'd made if you did any before activating.

Isn't a team reverting to how it was at the BEGINNING of the gameweek, exactly what it's intended to do ? Meaning transfers made earlier in the week would obviously be lost (shame about the points as well though)

Thanks, was looking for exactly this kind of info due to my situation of my own making.

Did Alonso to 4.5 on Sat night to enable 5.5 mid upgrade to Pogba for a -4

Am obviously regretting it a bit now and wondered if free hit was a way of reversing it out.

Clearly don't want to play it though if I still end up with a -4 anyway.

Take Eriksen and Kane out and see how Spurs looks.

Hazard comes back soon. Morata seems decently settled. Chelsea will only get better.

It's difficult or to get caught up in it all when on FFS. I was all set to get Pogba or Mkhitaryan in for a hit yesterday. Took a day to cool off and now saving my transfer seems the most sensible option. Helps to take a step back sometimes.

The kneejerking has reached new heights this season. What are class players like Ville Ronka and Mark Sutherns doing? Don't see them wildcarding.

What looks good usually works. If you have a midfield of Pogba/Mkhi, KDB, Mane/Salah, Eriksen/Alli you will do well over the long run.

Rotation could be key this season

“There are a lot of games and everyone is going to play,” Guardiola said after the win at Brighton after being asked how he can accommodate a squad so full of quality.

Rotation, it seems, is going to be central to the City boss’ approach this season.

One look at his attacking options and it’s clear why. Few managers anywhere in the world can call upon the likes of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva in the final third. It’s an incredible group of players.

Few Clubs have such strength in depth and it’ll be fascinating to see how the manager juggles his options across the four competitions this season.

Commonly known as the all-in wildcard 🙂

    Foster Elliott

    Mbemba Manquillo Jones Hegazi Matip

    Pogba Mkhitaryan Fernandinho Phillips Mane

    Jesus Aguero Firmino.

If these 5 teams have a good season id be sorted.

Discalimer** my bench would be full newcastle 🙂

Thinking of getting rid of Hegazi (Already have Foster & Dawson) and upgrading RLC.

I would only have 5.4 to spend. Should I stick with Hegazi or get a slightly better midfielder? The best options I feel I have are, Atsu, Doucouré, Capoue or Davis.

City need to improve on their home form of last season if they are to win the title this term.

They finished the last campaign with the sixth-best home record in the top flight, with seven draws harming their title ambitions. Away from the Etihad, they had the second-best record, winning 12 of the 19 games played.
