The Technical Area – Firmino’s Opening Gameweeks

Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

Great analysis of Firmino - looks like my mind is made up regarding this week's transfer (barring unforeseen developments).

Current front line is Kane, Lukaku & Firmino so my KDB replacement will result in a double up.

    KDB -> Eriksen/Alli, Mkhi/Pogba or Salah/Mane?

    Thinking Eriksen or Salah.

Alli, he is suspended for CL games so he has less chance to be rotated compared to Salah/Mane. Or just go Mkhi.

Any Swansea fans here that can shed some light on how Renato Sanches could affect Carroll?

Will TC still be a starter and if so, could it actually benefit him?

Thanks, that's good to hear. Just thinking that with Renato Sanches and Bony signing, maybe there'll be a higher quality of talent to get on the end of some of Carroll's deliveries.

Transfermarket has Sanches as a CM.

Swansea have two DM in Britton and Mesa, therefore Sanches will not play the 'sitting' role. In any case Clement will want to get more from him.

This means that with Sanches in the team, plus a DM, that Carroll is fighting with Fer & Cluclas for one of the two remaining mid spots.

If Clement goes to 3 at the back then there is only one place for the three above.

Ki is due back soon, Narsingh and Routledge are knocking about and maybe the odd 'horses for courses' pick, and of course Bony and Tammy as a two up top could result in Ayew getting a wide mid slot

I have Carroll but if I was Wild Carding I would go Chalobah or RLC

Clement might play him in midfield but look out for him playing as a more offensive midfielder, perhaps part of a top 3.
He may, i mean MAY be almost an oop player if he gets the gametime which I think he will otherwise why would he be going to Swansea.
His general style might not be ideally suited to swansea so playing off the striker might be an option.

Will they use a DM if they stick with 3-5-2 though? They just used Carroll, Clucas, Fer in a midfield trio last GW.

But I guess one of them drops out for Sanches?

      Sanches/Fer - Mesa/Britton/Clucas - Carroll/Clucas
      Routledge/Fer/Sanches/Ayew/Clucas

Nobody knows what Clement will do with Sigurdsson's role. I think Fer will play there.

An on song Man Utd could still prosper.

Stoke City defence at the Bet365 was the fifth-worst side in terms of shipping shots in the box at home last season.
