Captain Poll – Gameweek 7

One match remains in Gameweek 6, but we are already looking ahead to the weekend and the players under consideration for the armband in our latest Captain Poll.

The seemingly perfect alignment of form and fixture is set to propel Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku (11.7) back to the summit ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit to Old Trafford on Saturday.

Owned by 55.8%, the Belgian’s successful strike away to Southampton at the weekend was his sixth of the campaign – and the fifth time in six outings that he has delivered attacking returns.

Meanwhile, the winless and goalless Eagles have conceded more big chances than any other team and, along with West Ham, have conceded 13 goals, again a Premier League low.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.5) is another consistent performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks who warrants interest after racking up attacking returns four times and delivering two double-digit hauls. The Armenian – who sits in a third of FPL teams – only mustered two chances against the Saints, but should be handed more opportunities against Roy Hodgson’s obliging backline.

It is also worth noting that in their last four league meetings at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have scored seven times without conceding. Palace are yet to score this season, perhaps even promoting Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones as differential captain options.

Back up front, a trip to Huddersfield Town hands Harry Kane (12.5) the chance to challenge at the top of this week’s poll given his incredible away form.

While the 22.5%-owned Tottenham talisman has failed to find the net at Wembley, he has proved devastating on the road, firing off more shots than any other player and racking up braces against West Ham on Saturday and Everton in Gameweek 4.

Kane now has 11 goals form his last five Premier League away trips.

However, with four clean sheets and just one goal conceded at home, against Leicester City in Gameweek 5, the Terriers could prove stubborn opponents.

Kane’s supporting midfield duo of Christian Eriksen (9.7), who scored against the Hammers on Saturday, and Dele Alli (9.5), who provided two assists, once again proved they are able deputies for those looking for alternative Spurs captaincy cover. The pair enjoy strong ownership, sitting in 27% and 30.4% of teams respectively.

Manchester City’s trip to Chelsea looks potentially tough on paper, but it could be unwise to overlook the Gameweek 6 poll winner Sergio Aguero (11.7), given that he has scored ten times in his 15 encounters with the London side in all competitions.

The Argentine’s place at the top of the FPL points table with 52, following his goal and assist against Palace at the weekend, are also strong factors in his favour. With 65,000+ transfers in since Saturday the FPL market is clearly optimistic he will maintain his recent output.

Among Chelsea options, Alvaro Morata (10.2) is looking impossible to overlook after his hat-trick against Stoke City. That put him level with Lukaku and Aguero on six goals and with more than 153,000 transfers-in, the Spaniard is currently this week’s most popular transfer target.

But perhaps his midfield team-mate Eden Hazard (10.5) could emerge as a stronger option, as he bids to make his first start of the season. The Belgian’s brace against City in this fixture last season certainly makes him a strong differential armband option. If he can deliver, his 3% ownership would surely spike dramatically over the international break.

Another midfielder returning to match fitness who could garner votes is Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (11.9), who takes on a Brighton defence that has shipped four on the road this term.

His 2.4% ownership will be keeping a close eye on the Chilean’s performance in tonight’s final Gameweek 6 fixture, at home to West Brom. Impress tonight, and he could be worthy of a first FPL captaincy in a season that has been hindered by transfer speculation and injury.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth welcome Leicester City to the south coast in a fixture that presents further differential captaincy options: both teams are among the four worst sides in terms of conceding shots on goal.

Jamie Vardy (8.5) is undoubtedly the Foxes’ prime captaincy candidate. Despite his penalty miss against Liverpool on Saturday, the 11.3%-owned striker has still recorded five goals and earned bonus points on two occasions this term.

Cherries 2.2%-owned forward Josh King (7.2), who scored 16 times last season and finally got off the mark in 2017/18 with a goal at Everton, is another enticing alternative on our list.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 7 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

if you are playing 5 at the back every week great otherwise too much money in defence maybe downgrade 1 of your defenders and ddg to cheaper goalie and upgrade 3rd striker or midfield

Don't get rid of De Gea, he will outscore all other keepers significantly by the end of the season. Upcoming fixtures aren't great but Mourinho parks the bus in them, so still likely to get quite a lot of clean sheets.

Eriksen yes, Davies not sure. Spurs are usually tight but bigger teams have better fixtures which you could get e.g. City or Chelsea.

I would say yes to keeping Eriksen, and no to keeping Davies. With Davies you've got alternatives with better fixtures. Otamendi, and Luiz for example would make great replacements. Even Kolasinac, if you can stretch that far

I guess it depends on what you're doing with the money saved.

If you can keep Davies & Eriksen and also get Kun, Morata, Salah, Azpi, and maybe stretch to Kane up top, then I would keep them.

Palace haven't scored a goal in 6 gameweeks, now Benteke is out two months with an injury, and they're playing away against the best defence of the league - and score their first goal of the season. You know it's going to happen, fellow Jones owners.

Hey Doos, I just sorted that table by Big Chances Created. RLC is in the top 3. Plus he passes the eye test, was their best player against Soton and came very close to scoring against City too.

Cheers Doos, yeah I was doing it for 2 GW's as you suggested. RLC coming in at #3 is promising - and I think he's a better option than Tom Carroll this weekend

"better option than Tom Carroll this weekend"? Really?

I mean obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I'm a bit curious about how RLC is a better option this weekend when he is playing away against the best defence in the league so far. Overall you might think RLC is a better option and I don't disagree with that but I personally can't see how he can be a better option for "this weekend"?

I think any Crystal Palace players are the worst fpl assets to have atm with their next two games being against Man Utd and Chelsea.

    4. Klaren

Not really, I don't own Jones, but United are very likely to keep a clean sheet in this one, their defence is significantly better than City's (although they aren't likely to score as many goals).

  5. Athletic Nasherbo

Just a few questions for you guys. Will appreciate any feedback.

After Palace game is it worth considering dumping United assets with those tough fixtures coming?

Worth doing Alonso to Azpilicueta?... Alonso 3 YC and the Morata Azpi link is looking good. Plus Alonso will fall in price. That's the rational.

    1. Norman Conquest
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

mou will park bus in big games so keeping jones might dump mkhi butt lukaku is a season keeper even in the tough games he will still score a few

    2. Enzo the Baker
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

Yes, its worth dumping Mkhi especially if you can get someone like Silva/Salah/Eriksen. Would be a bit more careful about dumping Lukaku, and would hang on to Utd defense if you have any.

Alonso is a wait and see, re-evaluate after the Int'l break

    3. Patricio17
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Depends who you're dumping United assets for. If it's for City and Chelsea assets, then totally worth it. City and Chelsea have a great run and Morata/Silva for example offer good value.

The Alonso question. If you could do with the extra 0.5, then sure. But if not, you might as well keep him. You bought him for his attacking threat, and he could deliver a haul similar to Azpi at any given time.

Early mock WC team after next GW. I think I'll go without Kane and Kaku. Their fixtures turn a lot worse after next GW. Yeah, they are fixture proof but I think Aguero and Morata + MIB can easily outscore them.

Don't want more than 1 player from Pool either and Coutinho looks the best option. And I like him as a player the most. Mkhi could easily be Silva.

    Elliot
    Alonso Otamendi Lascelles Fernandez
    Eriksen Coutinho Mkhi
    Aguero Morata Vardy

    Krul Atsu Loftus-Cheek Hunemeier

Looks ok - Simpson has to be ahead of Lascelles with Leicester's fixtures and you having Elliott - midfield looks poor value with the fixtures they have though - I'd rather have Hazard, a Man City midfielder and a mid-price option than those 3.

Good feedback, thanks. Simpson better option than Maguire? I was thinking I might go with Maguire, then change him to Jones when Man U fixtures get better. But Leicester hasn't looked that good defensively.

Not sure I want to triple Chelsea. So it'll be either Hazard or Morata for me. City midfielder would be D Silva (instead of Mkhi)

        1. Now I'm Panicking
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

Yeah - Maguire deffo better but 0.6 more expensive (5.1) and there are probably better options at that price from other teams. Simpson only 4.5 so if he is benched often it's no biggie.

I went early. Chelsea v City has had at least 3 goals in the last 5 fixtures. Ideally you want both Kaku and Kane this week but it depends on whether you can afford to wait. If not dump Kaku. Utds fixtures turn ugly after the Palace game.

Have a bad feeling Mourinho could see Palace as the perfect chance to give Lindelof his Premier League debut.

      Haha top quality fear-mongering 🙂

Jones no longer suspended in Europe, that's true - but I doubt Mourinho will want to break the Smalling - Lindelof partnership. Jose's recent comments suggest that the only way Lindelof will start in the PL is as part of a back 3 CBs against tougher teams.

Lindelof will get his start when Jones eventually picks up his yearly injury, beyond that I can't see Mour wanting to break Bailly and Jones right now.

Sterling: yes, hes a huge rotation risk, but hes delivering when given playtime. Anyone taking the jump with him? i was about to but chose not.

I'd be more tempted with sane as he's less of a rotation risk. Jesus tends to swap with Sterling whilst sane keeps his place on the left if they stick with 4-2-3-1

If you want Man City assets just make sure your bench is stocked. To be honest the half hour cameos of the subs can sometimes be more devastating.

Yeah, I'm probably getting Sane in GW8 if he looks like he's regained the spot. Significant improvement in level. The hauls are not coincidence I think.

GW7 Captaincy and Clean Sheet Odds

With the curtain having closed on GW6 with Arsenal's victory over WBA we start to draw our attentions to the armband for GW7.

Last week the DS highlighted the fixtures MCY v CPL (494), TOT v WHU (454), EVE v BOU (388), ARS v WBA (372) and CHE v STK (337).
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16479418

Even though we focused on the two highest ratings, as you can see assets from any of the top fixtures did well too, most notably Morata with a hat trick.

This week the DS spreadsheet gave us:
    ARS: BRI 414
    BOU: LEI 231
    BRI: ars -414
    BUR: eve -458
    CHE: MCI 163
    CPL: mun -405
    EVE: BUR 458
    HUD: TOT -420
    LEI: bou -231
    LIV: new 141
    MCY: che -163
    MUN: CPL 405
    NEW: LIV -141
    SOT: stk 68
    STK: SOU -68
    SWA: whm -78
    TOT: hud 420
    WAT: wba -253
    WBA: WAT 253
    WHU: SWA 78
(Background information on these numbers can be found here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16458109)

Everton head the list with 458DS which can't be ignored, followed by Spurs (420DS), Arsenal (414DS) and Man United (405DS). So the DS is pointing the way towards it being a toss up between Kane, Lacazette/Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku.

Clean sheet odds: Implied chance of a clean sheet
    Man Utd 1.57 64%
    Arsenal 1.90 53%
    Tottenham 1.90 53%
    Everton 2.10 48%
    West Brom 2.40 42%
    Liverpool 2.70 37%
    West Ham 2.37 37%
    Southampton 2.87 35%
    Stoke 3.10 32%
    Watford 3.30 30%
    Leicester 3.60 28%
    Bournemouth 3.75 27%
    Man City 3.75 27%
    Chelsea 4.0 25%
    Swansea 4.50 22%
    Burnley 5.0 20%
    Newcastle 5.50 18%
    Huddersfield 7.50 13%
    Brighton 11.0 9%
    Crystal Palace 12.0 8%
    (Supplied by http://www.betfair.com)

The top four DS teams also appear in the top four favourites for a clean sheet this week. Man United head the list with a mammoth 64% with Arsenal and Spurs joint second with a healthy 53% too!

So who's your favourite to wear the armband for you in GW7?

        Can you believe that?
I need to keep thinking and remembering that these numbers show the ease or difficulty of fixture, so with that in mind (and I so want to say "win") I would say Bournemouth head into the game favourites but with the DS being so low (I'm trying to just keep to above 350DS-400DS for wins) it could go either way.

        Football, it's a funny ol' game 🙂

There are always going to be numbers than don't really make sense. Leicester aren't great from home but the way they defend, Leicester should win.

        CS Odds:

Gotta agree with you there with Lacazette, what other captain options you got? That's a bit of a differential punt, me likey. If I didn't have Kane and Lukaku I would seriously be looking at Kolasina(c)!

53% CS odds is HUGE imo, but is Trippier nailed to play? Check midweek CL minutes. Any chance you can stretch to Davies or no?

Trying to bring this to your notice since 2 days 😀

I have a suggestion regarding your table.

Is it possible for you to keep track of the results wrt table? Say this week spurs are at 420 Vs HUD . This means we expect atleast 2 goals and a Cs for them .

This will be a support to your current table and if it has a good success rate , then I believe it should be reliable most of the times

        What's wrt?

Each week I provide a link to the previous week and start off with a small review.

Can you add the match score along with the small review ?

Last week the DS highlighted the fixtures :
          MCY v CPL (494),
          5-0

          TOT v WHU (454),
          3-2

          EVE v BOU (388)
          2-1

          ARS v WBA (372)
          2-0

          CHE v STK (337)
          4-0

Something of this sort? I believe this might help a bit more.

This is just a suggestion, you already do awesome work with the table and the cs odds

Ah right I see what you mean. Not a problem but I think by starting with a similar paragraph every week like this:
"Last week the DS highlighted the fixtures MCY v CPL (494), TOT v WHU (454), EVE v BOU (388), ARS v WBA (372) and CHE v STK (337).

Not really, the numbers soley represent fixture difficulty. I include the clean sheet odds so you can cross reference the two stats together.

Haven't seen the incident yet (been away) but what are the chances of Tomer Hemed getting a three match ban following his FA violent conduct charge. Chris Houghton making all the right noises but am already looking at viable alternatives...just as my investment was starting to look wise! Doh!

90% sure he will get the 3-game ban, as the FA charged him yesterday with viloent conduct. We know how that always ends.
