Development Squad – Expected Goals

As regular readers may know, the current set of tasks being carried out by Matz1lla involves Expected Goal data.

We have made great progress with this in recent weeks and, on our test servers, we now have tables and maps up and running. That gives me the opportunity to show work in progress and detail what is due to arrive in Update Six.

Effectively, we’re using Opta’s data to bring you both Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) for both players and teams.

If you are new to the concept you can view this excellent movie from Opta explaining how xG is generated.

A full explanation from Opta is also available here.

Meanwhile, the xA data is a little different to that currently available elsewhere.

The Expected Assists data you will get as part of the update will not be generated using the xG value of a shot, instead – as explained here – it assesses the likelihood that a pass will lead to a “primary assist”.

Opta’s full explanation is:

“Expected assists measures the likelihood that a pass will be a primary assist. The model is based on the finishing location of the pass, what type of pass it was and a variety of other factors. This model is not reliant on whether a shot was taken from this pass, so credits all passes, regardless of whether they result in a shot.”

By combining xG and xA, we are able to offer an Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) statistic for players, representing the number of goals they were expected to either score or assist over any given period.

The table below shows the top ten Defenders xGI for Gameweek 7 just gone.

members

So our Members will be getting access to three statistics – xG, xA and xGI, with the latter available for players only.

However, our team data also includes xGC, or Expected Goals Conceded, so that we can assess team defensive strength.

All this data is, as ever, available to slice by any of our filtered intervals – so you can view player and team data by Gameweek, by Matches and by Home and Away matches.

It’s also dropped into our comparison tools for players and teams and will be made available for adding to custom tables.

We’ve also mapped the data to provide a visual representation of xG.

So below you’ll see a graphic showing a comparison of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and their xG so far. We’ve allowed for full tooltip information on any xG value, giving access to the shot type, the assister and the xG value assigned.

members

Effectively, coupled with our existing Opta data, this adds a whole new weapon to our armoury when analysing teams and players.

It allows for the assessment of players and teams that are perhaps either under or overperforming, therefore offering clues as to likely regression or improvement.

We will, of course, be using the data to create members’ articles, offering guidance on how to use it and what it can tell us.

We’re currently refining the work on the test server, fixing bugs and adding new methods of showing the data.

Next, we plan to add widgets to the members’ dashboard, showing the top ten under and overachieving players for xG for the current Gameweek, with the ability to quickly view any Gameweek and the season as a whole.

I would hope that we will be in a position to release the first iteration of xG as part of Update Six early next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would it be sensible to double up on Chelsea's defence? e.g. Courtois & Luiz

downgrade Dou and upgrade Clark or Hune. Play 433. Also not sold on needing Foster on a WC.

Haven't wildcarded so way more than I expected.

9 - Foster, Elliot, Suttner, Davies, B. Smith, Salah, T. Carroll, Lukaku, Kane

Will lose at least 4 of them when I wildcard - which will probably be next GW.

usually someone and after i have set my wildcard alive it´s only one survivor and it´s Jesus. Salah close and Foster close but have decided i wanted Coutinho and Fabianski instead and Carroll could be re-installed if i change my mind

I have done a lot of changes until now because i saw this iB as ideal to make some rearrngements to the squad and therefore took some hits instead, which have worked out ok.

Are people on this site overvaluing Vardy?
Leicester seem dire, Mahrez isn't doing almost anything, they lost Drinkwater, they were very lucky not to lose to Bournemouth, they are sitting at 17-th place.

exactly my thoughts , Vardy is a real patch player who goes on the runs scoring 5-6 games on the trot .

there is none sadly in that price bracket (Firmino/Bats) and then you have to go down the price ladder for (Rashford etc) .

My worry is that if I put in Vardy and structure the team that way in my WC , I am in trouble if he fails , because of the lack of alteratives

I think Firmino still is a viable option, but i would play vardy next 2 and then bring Firmino in again. Sturridge did almost nothing to prove he is a contender for starting place and Firmino wil be good, albeit not as prolific as Kane and such but what do we expect from 8.5m forwards, really? If you expect the same points for him than for example Lukaku it would be a lot of disappointments along the way, if you rather think he will keep pace with some of the 8.5m mids and reasonably in distance to the more expensive forwards i think you will be satisfied. But as with everything else in FPL it´s all about timing, I had him since the start, but sipped now mainly because i didn´t want two Liverpool players in GW8 and 9, so decided to let Vardy have his shot for now. Leicester not the best team there is, but at least if they score it is areasonable chance Vrady is involved in it.

5 goals in 7 games including playing Arsenal, Chelsea & United.
Focal point for the team, nailed on, penalty taker.
As long as they score goals as well as let them in why does it matter what league position they are?

Will they score goals though? Bournemouth away was a pretty good fixture for Vardy, and he did absolutely nothing. Leicester did absolutely nothing. Their form is worrisome.

Brighton (Dunk? Duffy?) rotate well with the swans I think? Also pretty well with Newcastle. 🙂

If you have no other City attack then maybe C but I'm not losing Salah just yet

Can't wait for internationals to be over (without any injuries) to take my first hit of the season, a -8.

    Good or bad move?

    Lukaku to Jesus
    Morata to Vardy
    Richie Sterling
    Mkhitaryan to Silva

It'll give me this for GW8

    Hart (bur)
Davies (BOU) / Cedric (NEW) / Naughton (HUD) / Mee (WHU)
Salah (MUN) / Silva (STK) / Sterling (STK)
Kane (BOU) / Jesus (STK) / Vardy (WBA)

    Elliot / Mooy / Carroll / Long

    From fpl statistics:
    Mooy -97.4%
    Hegazi -97.1%
    Long -96.7%

Looking at a potential loss in TV of 0.3 right there over IB.
Would you WC to stop the rot, and to freshen up the team with some Chelsea defense, a better £6m mid and maybe Sterling?

Long and Mooy have been over 95% for about ten days. I doubt they will drop due to the use of so many wildcards.

Right now all selling/buying will be on wildcards, but next Thursday/Friday non-wildcarders will make their transfers, so they could still drop.

That is a good question. Swapped out Mooy last Sunday to avoid the drop, but he keeps bobbing. He is further away from a drop today than when I swapped him out. His upcoming fixture isn't terrible and he shouldn't get injured over IB. tough one.

He could easily grab an assist this GW, so would keep for this GW if not for the drop. Plan to drop him on WC, but hoping to hold off wc'ing a couple of GW's still

I still think he's a horrible pick. Even if he matched his assists and goals from last season we would score so much less due to being a fwd.

I disagree with this, he has been picking up bonus points in games where he scored due to higher bps for forwards scoring, he also seems to be on penalties. I don't have him myself but as long as he starts games he should do well.
