Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Resurgent Wilson Sinks Arsenal

A star turn from an in-form striker makes history for Bournemouth as Arsenal’s defensive fragility is exposed once again.

Callum Wilson helped Bournemouth to their first ever Premier League win over the Gunners and boosted his increasingly strong claims to be our third forward for good measure.

The striker hit the equaliser and then set up Jordon Ibe’s winner, grabbing maximum bonus for a 12-point return.

Injury kept Wilson out of the team until Gameweek 10 and he then scored in just one match, although that did involve a hat-trick against Huddersfield, up to Gameweek 19.

But his current form has been well worth the wait for his 2.4% ownership, with strikes in three of the last four fixtures.

Priced at 5.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Wilson has the form and some favourable fixtures (whu che STK hud NEW lei) to be a strong third striker candidate.

He’s certainly got the attacking numbers to back up his claims. Only Harry Kane can better him for goals (five to three), shots (22 v 15), efforts in the box (14 v 12) and attempts on target (12 to eight) over the last four Gameweeks.

Ibe has also been producing the figures – as we detailed in yesterday’s Spot The Differential article – to warrant interest and he duly obliged with a first ever league goal for the Cherries.

He’s had more shots (19) and efforts on target (nine) than any other midfielder in the last four Gameweeks, while only four have bettered his 11 key passes.

Ibe thrived alongside Ryan Fraser, who provided the other assist, in a central support role in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

His 4.8 price and 0.4% ownership mark him out as a budget differential in a side showing some serious attacking intent – Bournemouth continue to rank top for shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks.

Bellerin boost for owners

Just one Arsenal player, Hector Bellerin (12.6%), is currently enjoying double-figure ownership in FPL and he delivered in an otherwise dismal display from the Gunners.

Having failed to score in the first 21 Gameweeks of the season, the Spaniard has now netted back-to-back goals, with the assist today coming from Alex Iwobi.

Bellerin is finally starting to translate attacking statistics into points – among defenders, only Marcos Alonso has bettered his 24 shots so far this season.

Defensively, however, it’s another matter for him and his team-mates.

Arsenal’s nine clean sheets this season is bettered by just five teams, but they’ve now gone five matches without a shut-out and have kept only three in the last ten.

Injuries to key personnel such as Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal haven’t helped, although Sead Kolasinac was fit enough to return to the squad today.

However, the summer signing was consigned to bench-warming duties as Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ continued at left wing-back at the Vitality Stadium.

Mesut Ozil’s knee injury seemingly kept him out, while Alexis Sanchez was omitted from the starting XI and edges ever closer to the Emirates exit. However, Arsenal’s attacking depth was at least boosted by the return of Aaron Ramsey, who was handed 16 minutes from the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The Welsh international averaged 5.4 points per match prior to that problem and he will now be pushing for a return to the starting XI, particularly with the Sanchez saga finally nearing its end.

Arsene Wenger had this to say on the Chilean’s situation post-match

“He’s [Sanchez] in a mode where he doesn’t know what’s happening to him. That’s why I decided to leave him out, because he could have moved today, or not. I didn’t want to come down with him here travelling away from the team.”

The 2-1 defeat today made it just one win in five for Arsenal, yet their attack has ticked over, scoring 10 times.

And their medium-term schedule remains one of the kindest – the Gunners play just three of the top eight over the next 12 fixtures, facing Spurs in Gameweek 27, Man City the week after and Leicester City in Gameweek 31.

Is it probably that Salah will rise in the next day or two?

    This seems ludicrous

Seems strange given he has not dropped price but has 10% less ownership than before his injury

It’s probably from everyone who took him out now running back with their tails between their legs having lost a load of team value rather than “gaining” 0.2 or 0.3.

He’s only blanked once in the last 14 fixtures. Completely essential. Yet 50% of the game still not have him - that’s ludicrous.

Don't mean to harp on about the Salah price again but the whole thing is puzzling me, if somebody could explain it I would be grateful. I thought I had a decent handle on price changes, value etc. but I'm at a loss here.

Salah's current price is 10.1. He was up at almost 60% ownership before his injury and then his ownership dropped to 50%, yet his price stayed the same. Now on fpl stats he's gone to +61%, apparently needing only 14K more transfers in. But his ownership is only at 51.6%. So it looks like he is going to rise soon on something like 52% ownership. How does that work, how could he be going to 10.2 at 52% when he was at 10.1 at nearly 60%? Or is fplstatistics just completely off?

So does it take a huge drop in ownership for a popular/high owned player to fall in value but only a relatively small rise in ownership for him to rise in value?

In other words the system is broken beyond repair. If a player effectively can't fall but can only rise then there's no market at all.

People say all kinds of clever things about wildcards and thresholds and chips (which they don't know and are only guessing about). But the facts are that Salah lost 600k owners without a price drop and now looks like rising when only a small fraction of those get him back again. That's a broken system. FPL might as well do price changes arbitrarily and cease the pretence that transfers in or out make any difference.

Would he have been price protected when he was flagged? Or reset when unflagged?

    5. Limited & Mediocre Mana…

      6 years, 3 months ago

      Price changes aren't linear.

      - Flags change transfers required
      - Double gameweeks change transfer thresholds
      - Wildcards and free hit chips do not contribute to price changes
      - Performance may also be a factor, but you'd have to contact the fplstats guy on twitter to ask more about this.

The way it has transpired means Salah's price has been massively inflated, but it's not strange at all.

there were a lot of WIld Cards but were people really taking Salah out in a WC, losing value etc when he was due back from injury the next week ?

The majority of his fall was during the double game week which just happened to be a 2 week game week too, when he was also flagged - I think those 3 factors combined to stave of a fall .... but nearly 30 other players fell in value that were more likely to be WC make weights ?

Do you reckon Moreno, when fit, will get the same amount of minutes as before he got injured? Or is it Robertsons spot to lose? Third option could obviously be they will both be rotated.. but that 4.4 pricetag is tasty though. So im considering him. Can't seem to find any other in that price range that I would be thrilled to put in my starting XI every now and then.

I think lots of people blurring the lines between what they think should happen & what would happen. Reality is it could go either way, we'll just have to monitor and wait and see I suspect.

Personal opinion will be first choice but still rotated 25% of the time or so.

Think I'm just about to own Salah for the first time this season...I'm finally admitting defeat...any decent reason to keep Hazard? It feels wrong removing him with those fixtures but he has not been good. Other attackers are Sterling, Son, Arnie; Kane Kun upfront

            Just sell Hazard.
He will of course score this week or next, but Salah captain material this week and the next

My cap this week with salah vc so last straw for me. There is something going on between Hazard, Chelsea and Conte imo he just doesnt seem to be tuned in fully.

Yeah this gw. He's gone for Arnie. Annoying thing is I know he's capable of scoring 40pts over 4 gws but with all the games Chelsea have and conte taking him off early and resting him in games I can't indulge myself any longer.

cheers guys, really the only way to keep him is by removing Kun which I'm not doing before Newcastle

I think I'm keeping son for a bit

But Salah is sticking for the season whether I do or don't

Errr... I'm probably selling Vert but might even keep Son. They aren't even that bad the fixtures IMO, and Son is really proving his worth. If there's no other way you can get Salah then he is the most important.

Robetson has been very good in moreno absence so I would not be surprised if Moreno is not 100% nailed on that spot.

Firm better long term option + extra cash.
Obviously Kun is an amazing option, for the next 2 especially, but it depends on team and how many transfers it will cost you.
